Vilhelm Parfumerie Room Service Review (Jerome Epinette) + I want to be alone Draw

Swedish-born Creative Director Jan Vilhelm Ahlgren of Vilhelm Perfumerie is a visionary, delivering beautiful olfactive stories and equally captivating narratives to accompany them. The inspiration for Vilhelm Parfumerie Room Service is Greta Garbo, the iconic actress of the 1930s, well know even today for her gender bender androgynous sensual style. Garbo captivated audiences in a way no one else could throughout her career. The public saw one side of her, but she was known to withdraw into her private world. It was in the 1932 movie Grand Hotel that she spoke the famous line, “I want to be alone”.

Greta Garbo inspired Vilhelm Perfumerie Room Service

In the film, Garbo plays a renowned Russian ballerina, staying in the exclusive Berlin hotel, “a place where nothing ever happens.” But there are many plots afoot and nothing could be farther from the truth. There is a thief after her jewels and her heart. Mise-en-scène: There is an unfinished supper brought up to the room to avoid the prying eyes; the butler draws a bath with aromatic oils of violets and sweet musk. Its heady aroma slowly overtakes the room filled with a soft fruit fragrance, it’s overflowing with ripened nectarines and blackberries. Garbo slowly approaches the bath as the silk robe slips of her alabaster skin. She is completely lost in reverie and doesn’t notice the the shadow of a man lurking behind the curtains. The predator will soon become the prey.

Room Service by Olya Bar

Vilhelm Parfumerie Room Service composed by perfumer Jerome Epinette is almost cinematic in the way he overlays an icy orchid accord with green and vegetal bamboo notes, lush fruits, and sensual florals. Flirtation and the need for privacy coexist peacefully in this composition, as two different moods of the same woman. It starts with an uplifting nod to the fragrances we have seen emerge in the 90s, bright and bubbly, what may seem like pink florals, slowly morphs into much more sensual and musky direction. As one wears it, a darker heart of violets and orchids emerges, letting the rich woodsy base peek through. Room Service celebrates the pleasure of luxury yet with a sense of approachable simplicity. The fragrance opens with the ebullient nectar of fruits, cooled by the green sap of bamboo. The heart is filled with velvety soft violets, showing restraint of emotion and the need to be alone, while the base brings the grounding warmth of sandalwood and amber, enveloped with musk. It leaves you craving more, as if you have just met a mysterious woman and you are looking forward to inhale her scent one again and uncover the secrets she hides so masterfully.

If Garbo was wearing Room Service she would have a hard time being alone. You will too.

Notes: Blackberry, Orange, Violets, Orchid, Bamboo, Musk, Amber, Sandalwood.

“The public saw one side of her, but she was known to withdraw into her private world.” Sounds like me.

I’ve only tried Dear Polly and Peony Couture but I’ve enjoyed those.
    USA

  • As Olya implies, one would expect Room Service to be a reserve composition, given what is known about the perfume inspiration Greta Garbo, but it is not as it as attention-grabbing with flirtatious notes. I have not tried anything from Vilhelm yet. I am in US.

  • kalexander1710 says:

I like that the fragrance is based on a movie scene. And I’m also intrigued by the bamboo notes, because it is not a note I have seen much. I haven’t tried any fragrances from Europerfumes

  • Enjoyed Olya’s introduction with the mise-en-scene of Greta Garbo from the movie Grand Hotel. It set the stage just right for her review of Vilhelm Parfumerie Room Service. One could imagine the scents and the scene. A limited number of notes, but a heady perfume described very well by Olya, as to how the notes evolve and convey different aspects of the lady. Unfortunately haven’t tried any Vilhelm Parfumerie perfumes so unable to say which is my favorite. Would love to try this based on Olya’s lovely review. Appreciate the draw. From USA.

Ordering room service always feels like such a luxury. And the foods and drinks ordered are always ones of indulgence. This perfume sounds positively indulgent!

  • happihappijoijoi says:

Have never seen the movie referenced in the review, but the scene is so vividly described, it is almost as if I was there. And that line, “The predator will soon become the prey.” Love it!
And the fragrance sounds like it embodies the mystery that Garbo so effortlessly projects. I wouldn’t consider myself in anyway mysterious, would love to feel like, or smell like I am, once in a while!
I haven’t tried any Vilhelm Parfumerie fragrance, coincidentally, I was looking into Dear Polly last night as I was browsing for perfumes online.
    I am in the US.

  • Mmm, this sounds so wonderful! It’s been so long since I’ve seen Grand Hotel, but I love the idea of a scent that smells like Greta Garbo’s regal and luxurious bath. This sounds like a must! I have smelled many of Vilhelm Parfumerie’s fragrances, and I love many of them. I’m in NYC.

  • Bamboo sounds like a wonderful note in Room service. The addition of a blackberry note was interesting to me. Greta Garbo was delightful to watch in Grand Hotel. I need to revisit that movie. Thank you for another great article and generous draw! Mich USA

  • I’ve tried Morning Chess and Black Citrus so Far.
Pretty cool how this is based on one of her movies. Sounds interesting. Thanks, Ca

  • Greta Garbo was right, I too often need a place to retreat, and to keep the world at bay.
Room Service is obviously top quality floriental both Michelyn and Olya like a lot, with touches of 1940’s Hollywood glamour. Opening of blackberries and orange, sandalwood, violet, orchid, and green bamboo , all about the private pleasures of solitude kind of fragrance.
I have no experience with Vilhelm Parfumerie. I have to admit, I’d truly love to win a bottle of Room Service.
Awesome opportunity , thank you Olya , and Michelyn

  • Wonderfully cinematic review, Olya! I can see these moments so clearly! ❤️ Always interested in a “bamboo” note – how it’s perceived & constructed (what is green bamboo sap, exactly?). This time of year (that late muggy autumn, early fall) is perfect for cold or “aloof” scents (often violet, iris, etc). Room Service is appealing in its the turn towards “restraint of emotion.” I would love to try it!
By chance, I’ve just ordered a sample of Vilhelm Parfumerie’s Mango Skin. Rachel Syme of The New Yorker does a Perfume Genie (if you’re lucky enough to catch it) & she always finds fantastic ideas. ❤️ Thank you for this amazing opportunity! USA

  • I enjoyed how Olya drew all of my senses into Greta Garbo’s s scene in Grand Hotel. It also reminds me of the Historic Bethlehem Hotel in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. My wife and I visited this beautiful vintage hotel for our anniversary last year. There would be a slight change to the script at “The Historic Bethlehem Hotel”. My wife and I would change the famous line to “WE want to be alone” :). This is a fragrance that I believe my wife will love and one I will enjoy on her. USA

  • This house has been on my must-try list for a long time, and I’d love the opportunity to sample this fragrance. This description had me at Garbo and slinky 1930s glamour. I’m in the US.

  • Fraghead Summy says:

A luxurious , Green perfume with a mysterious touch to it, is what intrigued me the most about this perfume and more interestingly how this is based on movie plot. I havent tried any from this house yet but would love to. From NYC, US

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

I haven’t tried a Vilhelm fragrance, but this sounds alluring. Greta Garbo is such a classic inspiration. Also just love the idea of room service in general, if this fragrance can evoke the feeling of a hotel in that way then I’m in! I’m in the USA.

  • Fruity floral? Sign me up! I like the sound of cool, green notes contrasting with the fruit.

Can’t go wrong with Vilhelm. I’m a fan.

  • “flirtation and the need for privacy coexist” I love the idea that the perfume depicts 2 different sides to the same woman. That complexity resonates with me.
Thanks for the draw – I’m in the US

Hello, in the US. I’ve tried a few of Vilhelm’s scents but haven’t found the one for me yet. As a lover of classic cinema, Greta Garbo, and Grand Hotel, I’m intrigued by this one.

  • Mango skin is my favorite Vilhelm but I like morning chess too
I love the backstory of Greta Garbo in the hotel

  • Love how the fragrance is based on the movie. The details almost makes me feel I was there. The notes are very sexy and inviting. I had sampled Mango it smells wonderful. Thank you for this Chance. USA

  • Olya Bar’s reviews are always informative including her YouTube reviews. Have not tried any Vilhelm Parfumerie fragrances yet but looking forward to it.
    Greetings from Maryland.

  • I love a perfume that starts out bright and fruity then morphs into dark and musky. From Olya’s review, I believe Room Service to be one of those. I also love Greta Garbo. I have not tried Vilhelm Parfumerie. I have seen their ads, the names are clever and memorable, and been tempted. I am in the US.

  • Great review. I love how Olya suggests that the notes of this fragrance simultaneously suggest both introversion and extraversion. Such a relatable feeling and such a creative way of viewing this fragrance. I have never tried Vilhelm before, unfortunately! Cheers from NC, USA.

  • Who doesn’t want room service like that? Wow! I have not tried any of their scents but several are on my list. Would love to give this one a spin. In maryland.

  • Grand Hotel is an iconic movie and Greta Garbo is incandescent. I don’t precisely recall the scene Olya referenced but I can easily imagine it. Bamboo, blackberry and violets are not notes I would necessarily connect with Garbo but it does sound like a lovely, luxurious scent. I’ve heard of Vilhelm before, but have not tried any yet. I’m in MD, USA.

Sophisticated fragrance ,green , bright and bubbly , with rich woodsy base.Room Service
screams class , relax , and high end Beauty and Spa treatments.
I’m in tailoring business, and I would gladly wear it with a suit , while working with clients at the shop.
Yes i have not only tried, but later bought Vilhelm Parfumerie Morning Chess. The reason was Sebastian Jara review for Cafleurebon.
    Thank you all

  • I loved the imagery portrayed in this review of Vilhelm Parfumerie’s Room Service. Olya certainly spent a lot of time on creating this review. My favorite part of the review was when Olya described the different moods this fragrance travels through. I have had the opportunity to try Vilhelm’s Dear Polly and also Basilico & Fellini. Both unique and gorgeous. I would love to win this one. Thanks for the giveaway. In the USA.

  • Love Olya’s reviews!!!
    Very nice illustrations!!
Violet in heart with grounding warmth of sandalwood and amber, enveloped with musk- sounds mysterious!!

  • I loved the Garbo comparison as that was perfect! Icy cool exterior with a sensual depth. I’ve not tried anything from this house before but Mango Skin has been on my wishlist for a long time. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway.

  • Thank you Olya for a wonderfully written review. I especially loved your description of celebrating luxury but with approachable simplicity which is the same vibe I get from one of my all-time favorite fragrances – Naxos. I have not yet tried any Vilhelm Parfumerie fragrances but they’re now on my radar. I’m in USA

  • Oh I adore Room Service! It’s my favorite from what I’ve sampled from Vilhelm Parfumerie (so far). Thank you for such an in depth review, I especially enjoyed the way it is described as luxurious as well as approachable. I would love to be entered into the drawing. Thank you from OR/US.

  • As Olya mentions the scent is almost cinematic in the way perfumer overlays various notes and depts. Flirtation and the need for privacy coexist peacefully in this composition is what intrigues me. It sounds like an amazing experience! I have yet to try anything by Vilhelm parfumerie but definitely on my list. US, MN

I love wearing perfume and watching old movies from the 1930s, the best decade in film history. As a Garbo fan, I would love to try this one. Olya’s review made me think that Garbo would have liked a fragrance with dueling moods, with both floral and wood notes. I love watching my old movies alone, but a caller would be welcome, too. I haven’t tried anything from Vilhelm Parfumerie.

  • Olya review of Room Service was so laid back, I imagined being in a hotel room in Paris, and right after my usual 15 minutes hot-cold-hot shower, eating Blackberries Nectarines Crisp with orange juice.
I do know one Vilhelm Parfumerie fragrance called Mango Skin, just a sample but still. Love the smell, and taste of mango. It’s one of the best ripe mango fragrances on the market. It also smells quite natural.
Appreciate Olya Bar review, and the giveaway campaign

  • Fragrances in the same ballpark as Room Service i really appreciate. Woody musky fragrances done the right way , with juicy fruityness just work in those days i want to be alone, having a walk in the park, drinking Tea on the porch , or having a nice bath in some fancy hotel, like Greta Garbo.
I’ve sampled Dear Polly and Morning Chess , both are really nice , I slightly prefer Morning Chess.
    Exciting giveaway, USA
    Regards

  • Room Service is my kind of fragrance. Being a barber my love for musky, woody and ambery fragrances comes naturally.
The fruitiness of the blackberry, and the sap of the bamboo tree smell are more than welcome . Versatile fragrance i can wear on all occasions.
I’m not familiar with Vilhelm Parfumerie, I need to finally get some samples.
    Thank you Olya , Europerfumes

  • I’ve loved almost all the Vilhelm fragrances I’ve tried so far and this is one that’s at the top of my list to try next. Sounds absolutely amazing and of course I adore Olyas reviews. Love the description of the movie scene and how it inspires the notes changing from fruity and green to lush florals and then warm sandalwood and amber. Thanks for the chance to win one! NY, USA

Lovely review Olya! What I enjoyed the most is her vivid description of the scene of Greta Garbo from the movie. I can picture it exquisitely in my head, and I can perfectly imagine how it would inspire a fragrance. The contrast of the cool, piercing aloofness of orchids with luscious and sensuous fruits and florals – a perfect juxtaposition of Greta Garbo’s gorgeous sensuality and her mysterious attitude. I would very much love to try a fragrance that embodies her mystique. Unfortunately I haven’t tried any Vilhelm Parfumerie perfumes so far, but I will be looking to seek out samples. I live in the USA.

  • I’m familiar with Vilhelm Parfumerie. I know all, but Skin X and Chicago High.
Room Service is sweet, tart, a bit acerbic, and really pleasing. I’m a big time extrovert, but even i need my time to rest , and eat in the bathtub.
Guys get some samples, and try Vilhelm Parfumerie, they have quite a few gems .
Poets of Berlin is my favorite one.
All profiles I already follow .
    Thanks a lot
