Vilhelm Parfumerie Dear Polly Review (Jerome Epinette) + Distance is Nothing to the Heart Draw

Vilhelm Parfumerie Dear Polly review

Christian Schloe Tutt’Art@

The scent of the beloved can be many things:  the warm, satin smell of the curve of a neck …  catches of a favourite perfume that cling to their pillowcase … the flowers and herbs of the garden shared at days’ end or the driftwood redolence of the beach house you rented last summer. Or perhaps it is the embodiment of that thing they do that always makes you smile. This was the case for Jan Ahlgren, founder and creative director of Vilhelm Parfumerie. Dear Polly, created by Ahlgren and his wife with Robertet perfumer Jerome Epinette in 2015, is a fragranced love letter, a scent that suspends time and distance.

Dear Polly evokes the morning tea ritual of Ahlgren’s wife with its distinctively astringent black tea heart and cheery bergamot top note. As it opens, Epinette dunks an assertively green, crisp apple in the cup.

As the fruit mingles happily, a spoonful of honey comes through, and the combination is so evocative, I swear I could almost smell bread toasting.  After a while, the tea steam twirls into a gentle furl of smoke and Dear Polly changes keys. The daybreak aromas begin to settle. Pungent Ceylon tea pens the next paragraph, fumy and astringent. Combining with citrus, the tea is familiar and comforting as well as zesty. In counterpoise, earthy, woodsy smells begin to coalesce; dark, pensive cedar and loamy oakmoss fill in the background, their bosky aromas bringing a subdued depth to the composition.

Time ticks by.  Vilhelm Parfumerie Dear Polly is still prominent on my skin, crunchy apple and chirpy bergamot still present, but merging into a dusky base of dry amber and cedar. Furry musk joins the tea party and things become un peut intime. It no longer feels like mid-morning but like the hours when the sky outside the kitchen window has put the stars to bed in anticipation of the dawn. The dregs of tea stand cold in their china cup, a smear of honey rests on the lip of the saucer. More masculine-leaning notes move forward towards Dear Polly’s conclusion, and the bright notes go to bed. It is as if the beloved and lover change places, and it is she who writes the ending of this missive.

Vilhelm Parfumerie Dear Polly review

While the opening of Dear Polly expresses the familiar joy of being in the company of the one you love best, its opaque, cedary-smoky dry-down hints at something more enigmatic – perhaps the unknowable nature of love itself, that tether of the heart even continents cannot sunder.

Notes: Bergamot, apple, Ceylon black tea, oakmoss, musk, black amber.

I admit to breezing through this line at Barneys and not lingering too long with any of them, but this sounds lovely! Crisp fruit, florals, smoky tea, and woods just sounds so lovely and perfectly balanced! Lauryn made the “journey” so to speak sound quite appealing. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • Beautiful description of the way the fragrance develops from Lauryn. Apples and woods sounds great for the upcoming Fall and Winter. Would love to try this house, but I’ve never heard of them before. After looking at their other fragrances, Poets of Berlin and Morning Chest sound interesting as well.

    California, US

  • I love the apple accord so that intrigues me along with cedar smoky dry down! I have been eyeing mango skin by the house but this sound so good as well. Based in the US

  • how lovely does this one sound?! Tea fragrances tend to be so soft and relaxing on my skin. I loved the way this review walked through the notes. The fragrance almost sounds drinkable. USA

  • I love tea fragrances and that it was created as a tribute to their love is very beautiful. I do own Vilhelm Darling Nikki which is smoky and spicy. I have always wanted a great black tea fragrance and Dear Polly sounds so unusual with green apples,so I hope I win Dear Polly. I wish I knew of Ariana shoshana last year when I was visiting relatives in DC

  • Dear Polly seems like a fragrance of contrasts, with both fruity and gourmand aspects. I have not tried any from Vilhelm line yet. USA

  • Couldn’t help but start salivating once Lauryn got to the honey part. Sounds like an english tea lover’s paradise. Super comforting on an autumn morning, with that touch of smokey sweetness and dark woods. Certainly don’t have enough tea perfumes in my collection and this one sounds like a winner! MI, USA.

  • The idea of a smoky tea with apple sounds lovely. On my wishlist it goes! I’m on my way to the virtual tour. Thanks for the link and the opportunity to sip (sniff). Mich USA

  • Lovely review by Lauryn and her photo for Vilhelm Parfumerie Dear Polly article, I also love illustration Christian Shloe. I enjoyed reading and liked that Perfume Dear Polly fragranced love letter, a scent that suspends time and distance. “While the opening of Dear Polly expresses the familiar joy of being in the company of the one you love best, its opaque, cedary-smoky dry-down hints at something more enigmatic – perhaps the unknowable nature of love itself, that tether of the heart even continents cannot sunder.”
    Love this beautiful fragragrance

  • This review makes me miss my partner who is away at the moment. I really love Lauryn’s review. I love perfumes but there is still nothing that smells better to me then my partners’ skin. And the pure calm, happiness and joy I feel when I smell it. I imagine that this fragrance has that kind of calming quality, but in the same time exciting and inviting. I wander if I made a perfume that reminds me of him what would the notes be? Is the combination of tea note and apple a perfect combo to describe the calm and happy mornings and warmth when you first hug right after you open your eyes? I’m from Illinois, US.

  • The list of notes sounds pretty simple when you read it in that form, but Lauryn’s description of how they are used makes it sound tantalizingly complex. If it’s accurate, then there’s both good writing and good perfume design here. I have not tried anything by Vilhelm Parfumerie. In the US, in NC.

  • Haven’t tried Vilhelm Parfumerie before but have heard great things about them! I definitely love the bottle design, and the combination of bergamot, apple and tea sounds wonderful.

  • I didn’t realize that this was a love letter-I love that. I’ve tried Peony Couture and I love it.

  • I like that this scent was done by the creator, Jan Algren, and his wife along with the perfumer, Jerome Epinette. It sounds like it really is getting to know what it is like for the couple at tea time. I also liked how Lauryn mentioned its almost like the point of view changes later in the dry down. Ive yet to try anything from Vilhelm Parfumerie but have heard some really great things and would like to try a number of them one that jumps to mind at the moment is Mango Skin. Commenting from CT USA. Thanks for the generous draw.

  • What interests me most is the tea note. I don’t own a lot of fragrances with tea in them but the ones I do, I absolutely love. I have only sampled one or two fragrances from Vilhelm.

  • Liked Lauryn’s review of Dear Polly, as she describes the various stages of this romantic perfume. Simple in its design, this fragrance is bound to evoke some good memories for the wearer. Haven’t tried anything from this house, yet. Thanks for the review and the draw. Writing from the USA.

  • I have never tried Vilhelm Parfumerie before but this review might just change that. I absolutely love tea fragrances and this one sounds phenomenal. I have heard amazing things about this brand, so I already know that the scent is of high quality. I am most intrigued by the fact that it is a tea fragrance, but the crisp apple and bergamot sound very interesting as well (in a good way). Kind regards from Illinois, USA.

  • I’m very curious about this fragrance, because I love honey scented fragrances, and this one sounds divine with the fruity-tea-honey impression combination. Also, having a masculine note, I think it gives an intriguing touch and a perfect signature fragrance.

  • If the tea note in this is anything like Gucci Pour Homme II… I have to buy this. It was interesting to hear the fragrance going unisex to more masculine in the dry down. Sounds perfect for autumn. USA

  • I love that this is a “fragranced love letter”, and that it is so intimately connected to the owners. I have not tried any of the Vilhem fragrances yet, but I’ve been hearing a lot about them recently, and this one sounds lovely. I’m located in the US. Thank you for the review of this fragrance and the generous giveaway.

Hello from Boston, Ma. I absolutely love how Lauryn described this juice… “While the opening of Dear Polly expresses the familiar joy of being in the company of the one you love best, its opaque, cedary-smoky dry-down hints at something more enigmatic – perhaps the unknowable nature of love itself, that tether of the heart even continents cannot sunder.” STUNNING EXPRESSION!

  • Love this description of the tea note – The dregs of tea stand cold in their china cup, a smear of honey rests on the lip of the saucer. I’m always looking for a fragrance that has a prominent tea note. I’ve never tried anything from this fragrance house.
    I live in the USA.

  • Lovely review Lauryn! Dear Polly sounds like the perfect autumn fragrance, cozy and warm with the tea, apple and amber notes. I’ve not tried anything from Vilhelm Parfumerie before. Commenting from the US.

  • Tea scents are another favorite of mine. Lauryn’s description of the evolution of Dear Polly sounds lovely. I’ve not tried any of the Vihelm fragrances. Thank you so much for a charming review and thanks to Europerfumes/Eden Square for making this draw possible. I’m in the USA

  • I love the premise of this perfume, the idea of a scented love letter closing the distance. I have not tried Vilhelm Parfumerie before. I am in the US.

  • I love the way Lauryn describes Dear Polly as a tea and apple comfort scent. Feeling the one you love. This sounds fantastic. I have never tried Vilhelm Parfumerie but would like to . Thank you Lauryn for the fun journey. California

  • I love tea fragrances, so I’m intrigued by this one. I haven’t tried anything from Vilhelm yet.

  • I’ve never Vilhelm as I am a new perfumista, but if it can evoke a review like this, I would love to get to know it. The apple note is really attractive to me – this sounds like a good fall fragrance to wear where I live, where we have apple orchards bringing in their harvests over the next couple months. The image Lauryn crafts of the stars being put to bed before the sun rises, and the masculine emerging after the feminine, is so clear and poignant. That’s the word I would use to describe the review and the art along with it. A true love story is indeed one of poignance. Writing from IL, USA

  • Juicy bergamot , greenness, tea , Dear Polly screams class , a bit mature maybe? Or it’s just my association with black tea fragrances.
I’d gladly wear it with a suit.
Unfortunately I have no experience with Vilhelm Parfumerie .
    Thanks USA

  • I’m drawn to this fragrance with its notes of crisp apple, smoky tea, airy oakmoss, and dark amber. I also like that it’s inspired by a love letter. I haven’t tried fragrances from this line before, so I’m intrigued. I live in the DFW area. Thank you!

  • Dear Polly sounds nice. I like that this is a Fragrances Love letter. Also like to find out how this tea fragrance will be. Thanks for the giveaway, Ca

I loved this review and now I absolutely must try this one! Ceylon tea, crisp apple, and that cedary-smoky dry down sound amazing and perfect for fall. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Lauryn’s review of this fragrance was quite intriguing and very informative. I really appreciate the way she described the beautiful notes that went into this amazing sounding fragrance. I’ve never tried anything from this house before but I’d love to. Thanks for the great review and the great giveaway. Commenting from Kentucky USA.

  • Dear Polly review reminded me of eating German Whole-Wheat Apple Cake i do on regular basis at my bakery, and drinking black tea. To make the cake right, you have to use both lemon or lime juiced , and the zest at the same time, and not like most do , one or the other.
I do know one Vilhelm Parfumerie fragrance called Mango Skin, just a sample but still. Love the smell, and taste of mango , and i had to try it. One of the best mango fragrances on the market.
Appreciate Lauryn review, and the giveaway campaign

  • This sounds lovely! There’s nothing like the scent of tea, smoky tea that is, with the notes of honey and apple. I love this review because I can almost taste this fragrance.

A bready, cedary scent? Sounds perfect for fall. I’ve tried many scents from this line but never this one.

I have not tried Vilhelm Parfumerie before, nor have I ever heard of them! I would be absolutely thrilled to be introduced to the house by way of a specially gifted bottle, and this Dear Polly fragrance in particular as I adore green apple and tea. The dry down sounds like a sure winner: cedar, amber and musk playing nicely as a skin scent is just plain yummy, always.

  • Hashim Madani says:

I’m not familiar with Vilhelm Parfumerie but what interests me are the astringent Ceylon tea and crisp apple notes. From my experience, I’ve yet to be disappointed in a fragrance that has a prominent tea note. They tend to have a calming, soothing effect. VA, USA.

  • I love the backstory to this perfume–so romantic! I haven’t tried this line yet (don’t see much besides dept store frags in my area) but it sounds like I need to look into samples. Thanks for the review! I’m in the US.

  • Other than seeing a few reviews on YouTube, I know almost nothing about Vilhelm Parfumerie .
Bergamot and tea combination , with smoky base is intriguing.
    Cheers from VA

  • Dear Polly is my kind of fragrance. Being a barber my love for green , mossy and leathery scents comes naturally. The hint of sweetness is welcome.
I’m not familiar with Vilhelm Parfumerie.
Thanks to Lauryn for her review, and to Europerfumes for the giveaway.USA

  • Bread? Tea? A cheery good morning and a soft goodnight? Whoa, Nellie! I love that a man and a woman created it. Put them to work on Notorieuse RBG la parfum, tout suite! I live in the USA.

  • Vilhelm Parfumerie unfortunately i do not know, but Dear Polly perfumer I’m well aware of.
Jerome Epinette is well known for his fresh, really pleasing natural smelling fragrances.
Bergamot is awesome for the summer and autumn, I guess the tea and bread reminiscences will make Dear Polly all year round fragrance.
Please review more Vilhelm Parfumerie fragrances, I’d love to know more.
    In US

  • Fragrances in the same ballpark as Dear Polly i really appreciate. Tea fragrances done the right way just work. I’m a tea lover, another reason for me to be really curious.
I’ve heard about Dear Polly and Morning Chess, but after Barney’s bankruptcy I was under the impression the house is not available in US. Good to know now they work with Europerfumes.
    Exciting giveaway, USA

  • I loved Lauryn’s review and her description of the fragrance really has me intrigued! The Ceylon tea, woods, and apples are perfect for fall. My favorite part was: “It no longer feels like mid-morning but like the hours when the sky outside the kitchen window has put the stars to bed in anticipation of the dawn. The dregs of tea stand cold in their china cup, a smear of honey rests on the lip of the saucer. More masculine-leaning notes move forward towards Dear Polly’s conclusion, and the bright notes go to bed. It is as if the beloved and lover change places, and it is she who writes the ending of this missive.” Thanks for the generous giveaway and I live in the US!

  • This fragrance sounds so beautiful in its evolution, switching from that tea and fruit opening before drying down to the moss and woods. It really is very appealing and sounds like quite the journey! I have not tried anything from this house before. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!
