Vilhelm Parfumerie Basilico and Fellini Review (Jérome Epinette) 2017+ Symphony in Green Draw

Basilico and Fellini

Swedish-born Creative Director Jan Vilhelm Ahlgren of Vilhelm Parfumerie now makes his home in Paris, according to his website – but wherever he dwells, it is clear that he is a bona fide bon vivant and storyteller at heart.

His perfumes are akin to aromatic vignettes, always inclusive of a plot twist which retains your interest. He has chosen to work with highly-regarded Robertet Senior Perfumer Jérome Epinette (the nose behind several Atelier Cologne, Floral Street, Frapin, Olfactive Studio, Jovoy and Byredo perfumes, among others); the union is a sympathetic one, judging by their fragrant collaborations. Vilhelm Parfumerie Basilico and Fellini is one such brilliant exemplar.

Federico Fellini inspired Vilhelm Parfumerie Basilica and Fellini

Federico Fellini was born in Rimini 100 years ago, January 20, 1920 via New York Times

It is said that Jan’s inspiration for Basilico and Fellini correlates with rumors that the renowned Italian director favored the herb basil, as it was touted to be an aphrodisiac. Fellini enjoyed cooking, not unlike the perfumer himself, Monsieur Epinette. Despite the copy offered on several websites (and being a cook myself), I don’t smell risotto blanco with basil leaf wilting atop. For me, it feels more like the joyous comic/dramatic semi-autobiographical landmark (1973 Oscar and Academy Award-winning) film Amarcord by the great master: candid, open-hearted and larger-than-life.

Federico Fellini Amarcord

Amarcord is poignant – an amplified, elaborate portrait of rural 1930s Fascist Italy as seen through the eyes of a pubescent boy on the verge of prurient manly curiosity. Fellini’s village near Rimini (where he grew up) is populated by a colorful cast of characters, as only Fellini can: worldly, naive, young, aged, foolish and wise – each has his/her role to play. Humor and pathos co-exist and tug at the emotions throughout – but it is the overwhelming joie de vivre which one feels, a sense of the fullness of ordinary life – which lingers. Even the looming shadow of Mussolini cannot mar it.

Like the film, Basilico and Fellini celebrates the simpler pleasures of la vie quotidiènne: it smells like an amalgam of the wealth of the summer kitchen and garden, the breathing heart of a home. What could be more Italian than “the kingly herb” and the sappy verdancy of fig? They are made for each other, yet one doesn’t instinctively think to combine them. This fragrance opens with the ebullient greenness of freshly snipped basil, just chiffonaded under your glistening blade: tonic, anisic, full of enthusiasm. It fills the senses. The limpid tropical note of dragon fruit gentles basil’s vigor (which is immense). Somehow basil shepherds us to fig – a very different hue of green, redolent of sap, leaves and bark – but it never quite vanishes, playing hide-and-seek with the slightly salty, semi-bitter fig in the noonday sun. Violet sidles up to them, softly cool and even-tempered.

 Federico Fellini Amarcord

In the base more verdancy reigns, as balsamic vetiver and a fresh hay tone provide grounding, prolongation of freshness and an open-air quality to the entire composition Vilhelm Parfumerie. Basilico and Fellini is a symphony in green in which everything smells as nature intended. It’s brilliant. When you need Italian Summer In a Bottle in any given season, it’s one to reach for.

N.B. – I find that Vilhelm Parfumerie Basilico and Fellini plays very differently, depending upon one’s skin. On the men I spritzed it read as more musky (not gauzy-musky, more earthy) and less floral/herbal/green than on mine.

Notes: pitahaya (dragon fruit), basil, wild fig, violet, vetiver, green hay

fig is one of my favorite notes and I’d love to see it against the basil note. I have only tried Peony couture which I adore.

  • I live in the USA, I liked this about Ida’s review. Winter is coming and SADS is upon us, summer in a bottle would be welcomed. “In the base more verdancy reigns, as balsamic vetiver and a fresh hay tone provide grounding, prolongation of freshness and an open-air quality to the entire composition Vilhelm Parfumerie. Basilico and Fellini is a symphony in green in which everything smells as nature intended. It’s brilliant. When you need Italian Summer In a Bottle in any given season, it’s one to reach for.”

  • I am ever on the search for green fragrances. It is so difficult to find the right blend, and then you hope it does wonderful things with your own body chemistry. I was really (albeit pleasantly) surprised to see that fig featured in this fragrance with basil, of all things. Hm! Intriguing. I have always been drawn to a lovely fig perfume but often found them dominantly sweet. It will be interesting to try the interplay of its scent with basil. Vetiver and (not included) Patchouli also figure in as my two favorite base notes. I would be delighted to try this fragrance. I appreciate the chance to toss my hat into the ring.

  • Reading this review of Basilica and Fellini has me trying to find the movie Amarcord to watch. I am always excited by Fellini and didn’t know this one. Figs and Basil—different hues of green, yes please.
I have mango skin which is fantastic from this house.

Basil and fig are two notes that I tend to enjoy in a fragrance. It’s interesting to finally see them work together in a fragrance. Sounds like a fun one to check out. I live in Maryland USA.

  • Basilico and Fellini has been inspired by the love of cooking in both Jan and the perfumer. It has a prominent basil note, a common herb used in cooking all over the world. It has fig but it does not seem as sweet a fig composition as some other fig perfumes are. USA

  • Jeanne Kohl says:

I love everything about this: the notes, the bottle shape, Fellini, and the photo of Jan Vilhelm Ahlgren. I adore basil and fig notes. Thank you!

  • I found it interesting from Ida’s review of Basilico and Fellini that it smells differently on men and women, especially that it’s earthy and musky on men – from the notes I wonder if it’s the earthiness from vetiver. “Italian Summer In a Bottle” has me intrigued – not least as I was cooking today with freshly cut basil. How fig note plays into it, I guess I’ll have to find out. Haven’t tried any Vilhelm Parfumerie fragrances. Thanks for the generous draw and the review. Writing from the USA.

  • Well I certainly need Italian Summer in a bottle! I’ve always found herbs in fragrance to add such an interesting dimension. Basil is a favorite. I can see it’s affinity for fig and violet but I’m really intrigued by the tropical dragon fruit. The overall green vibe of the scent sounds cooling. I’ve not tried any Vilhelm Parfumerie fragrances before. Commenting from the US.

  • Dragon fruit, basil and fig…..sounds fantastic! I enjoyed reading about the Fellini movie. I do enjoy Smoke Show from this house. Thanks for another great article and generous draw! Mich USA

This sounds like somethiing I would absolutely love. I like the relatively simple list of only six notes, but what a combination! As a lover of fig and of Fellini, this seems like a scent that would start a Nino Rota melody playing in my head. I have not tried any Vilhelm fragrances yet, but they sound exciting. I am in the US, in NC.

  • Elizabeth T. says:

I remember when this one came out! It was on my try-list, but alas I never was able to get my hands on a sample. I love green perfumes, and the basil, fig, and green hay notes really piqued my interest. Thank you for reminding me of this one! I’m in the USA. Thanks for the generous draw!

  • I love Italian. Cousine and as per the review this fragrance smells very natural basil and fig sound a so refreshing that I would love to try it , I live in the Bronx USA

  • I love almost all green perfumes (can’t think of one I haven’t at least liked), and in gardening and cooking, I especially love the scent of basil. And what a great description: a symphony in green. Yes please! I live in the USA.

  • Basilico and Fellini is my kind of fragrance. Being a barber my love for green , fresh and spicy aromatics comes naturally.
The hint of sweetness from the dragon fruit is welcome.
I’m not familiar with Vilhelm Parfumerie.
Thanks to Ida for her review, and to Europerfumes for the giveaway.USA

  • Wow what a great combination of notes! Ida’s review really made me crave for this perfume. Ok I have to admit that fig is perhaps my favorite note in perfumes. But I love how it is combined with basil in here! Also very interesting dragon fruit note. That is kind of unusual. I would love to try it. I’m from Illinois, US.

  • I am so curious about this combination of basil, dragon fruit, and fig, it sounds lovely and fresh. I enjoyed the reviewer’s connection to basil and the simple pleasures of cooking with fresh garden herbs. I have yet to try this fragrance, but I’m familiar with Vilhelm Parfumerie, and Room Service is one of my current favorites.

  • Thank you Ida for an interesting read. I like how you described the various notes entering the scene like a play 🙂 I also recently tried a Basil based fragrance and I’m loving it so this sounds right up my alley. I’m in USA

I love the herby smell of basil! The review creates an incredible sense of the way the scent is of the region it’s based on.

“Italian Summer In a Bottle” sounds great – would like to experience Italian summer in the flesh, but this scent will have to do

The verdancy of basil blending with fig, settling into vetiver and hay does summon to the mind’s eye a wash of brilliant green shades mixed with flecks of purple and yellow. I’d be excited to smell this one to see if it holds up to the imagination. Ida seems like such a genuinely cultured soul. I’m more curious about the movie than anything! That said, I love a chef’s perfume and am fond of woody floral musks.

  • I’m really interested in the combination of basil with fig and then with dragon fruit and violet. Sounds almost jarring.. It will be fascinating to try it. Thanks to Ida for a wonderful review and thanks to Europerfumes/Eden Square for making this draw possible. I’m in the USA

  • I was so interested by the description of the perfumes as “aromatic vignettes”. I think that idea is awesome, just showing small windows to that person. I don’t have a favorite Vilhelm Parfumerie but I am very hoping on trying this one through the giveaway!

  • Fig and basil is a classic combination in culinary, especially in Mediterranean cuisine.
After reading Ida’s review, I imagined sitting in the middle of a green field, and eating Fig Cake with Lemon Glaze, garnished with scoop of dragon fruit Gelato, and fresh basil on top of it
Can’t help it, Pastry Chef is going forward 🙂 I relate all fragrances to some sort of food.
I do know one Vilhelm Parfumerie fragrance called Mango Skin, just a sample but still. Love the smell, and taste of mango , and i had to try it. One of the best mango fragrances on the market.
Appreciate Ida review, and the giveaway campaign

  • This sounds really nice and different from anything I’ve tried as well. I enjoy the smell of basil, but don’t think I’ve tried it in a perfume, and like very much fig perfumes as well, but not sure I’ve smelled a real fig/fig tree or leaves. I liked that Ida said it’s like an Italian summer in a bottle as well as her mentioning that it smells different depending on the wearers skin and tended to be more musky on men and greener on women. I’d like to try it with my girlfriend to see how it wears on each of us. Ive not tried anything yet from Vilhelm Parfumerie but would love to try this and others, one example being Mango Skin. I’m in CT USA, thanks so much for the generous draw.

  • The perfume sounds amazing. Fig is one of my favourite notes and I am curious to see what magic can it do with basil! I like how it is described as ‘the breathing heart of a home’!

I appreciated that Ida blended the Fellini movie, “Amarcord” – first stating that: “Fellini’s village near Rimini (where he grew up) is populated by a colorful cast of characters, as only Fellini can: worldly, naive, young, aged, foolish and wise – each has his/her role to play. Humor and pathos co-exist and tug at the emotions throughout – but it is the overwhelming joie de vivre which one feels, a sense of the fullness of ordinary life”, comparing the movie to the cast of characters in the fragrance that meld together to bring about its “joie de vivre:

“This fragrance opens with the ebullient greenness of freshly snipped basil, just chiffonaded under your glistening blade: tonic, anisic, full of enthusiasm. It fills the senses. The limpid tropical note of dragon fruit gentles basil’s vigor (which is immense). • What a poetic comparison “ it smells like an amalgam of the wealth of the summer kitchen and garden, the breathing heart of a home”! I absolutely adore this Ida’s review! My favorite from Vilhelm is Don’t Tell Jasmine.
    I am from USA, AL

  • I love the smell of basil. It reminds me of a California restaurant’s beautiful herb garden. You could walk on the little path to the door and smell the fresh cut basil. It was exhilarating and made me know this would be a special meal. Ida, I liked the way you described the walk to the dry down of the fragrance. Each note being “sheparded” or “sidles” to the next. I would love to try this fragrance. It sounds wonderfully exciting to me. Thank you for the review and the giveaway. In the USA.

I have yet to try any of the Vilhelm line, but have wanted to for quite some time. It is a brand that really interests me… the packaging is top notch and very eye catching! Jerome Epinette is a fantastic perfumer and I love many of his creations including Oolang Infini, Santal Carmin, Bal d’Afrique, and Eleventh Hour just to name a few. I also really enjoyed the three he did for Luckyscent under the Decennial name, so I have been interested in Vilhelm for a while because they all sound fantastic and they are surely on my list to get my nose on for sure, but I can honestly say, until I just read Ida’s wonderful review, Basilico and Fellini was not one that was on my radar. Now, I love Basil and grow it every year on the side of the house, and fig is a note I absolutely adore in perfumery, but I (in my opinion) feel that a lot of fig scents smell the same to me, so this one just got overlooked, and judging by Ida’s review, that was a mistake on my part. Since reading in to it though, the dragonfruit note is really sticking out to me! This one is going on the list also! Thank you Ida, as always, for another beautiful review. I enjoyed the read and found another fragrance to add to my ever growing list. A huge thanks to Europerfumes for your generosity and for this awesome opportunity. A big thanks to Michelyn for making this all possible. You are truly appreciated! Sending love and gratitude from Delaware, US. Good luck all and stay safe friends!

  • I love everything green, and this sounds amazing. The reference to Amarcord and “everything as nature intended” makes me want to try this even more.

  • hannahrgeyer says:

I’ve only ever encountered a few fig perfumes – none of which I’ve particularly liked. But as the weather gets more… dreary, I’m on the hunt for perfumes that smell fresh, like the outdoors. How could I not be interested in something that warrants the description: “a symphony in green in which everything smells as nature intended”?

  • I’d love to smell a fragrance using basil as I love green florals…All of Vilhelm Perfumes are very original fragrances.

  • Shamrock1313 says:

I really enjoy green frags and fig as a note, so this sounds like a winner for me. Different characteristics when sprayed on a man or woman’s skin is quite interesting.

Wow! I’m a huge Fellini fan (Juliet of the Spirits being my favorite of his films) and it’s so cool that this fragrance is inspired by him. I love that Ida connected this fragrance to a specific film, especially Amarcord! A great one. Awesome pictures included as well. I love green fragrances, it’s interesting to see that Fellini saw basil as an aphrodisiac, I agree! I also love fig and hay notes, I’m dying to try this. I haven’t had the opportunity to try any Vilhelm fragrances in person, but the reviews I’ve read on this blog have really piqued my interest. Hope to try them someday soon!

  • I’d love some Italian summers in a bottle! First of all, I love fig and the herbal combination sounds so interesting. I think I’d love it. I live in the USA.

  • Enjoyed the read. Not much of a fan of fig or green fragrances. But I’m still searching for one to try and see if I’d really like it. Like to give this a try. Haven’t tried any Vilhelm Fragrances yet. Thanks, Ca

  • This sounds so intriguing to me because I have developed a Fig obsession and I’ve started searching for the perfect fig for me. Also, I’m so fascinated with this fragrance story and with the history it recalls.

  • Basil and fig are two of the best scents out there. To have them combined like this, and in honor of Fellini, is perfect. I am in Kansas, U.S.A. and have never tried a Vilhelm Parfumerie fragrance.

  • Happy fig, greenness, vetiver , Basilico and Fellini screams class , a bit mature maybe? Or it’s just my association with overly green fragrances.
I’d gladly wear it with a suit.
Unfortunately I have no experience with Vilhelm Parfumerie .
    Thanks USA

  • Ida’s description style is unique- not seeing who is author I guess that it is Ida reading this beautiful article. I appreciate Fellini fiml-art, but it’s not which I love to watch often. Basil, fig and vetiver – sounds very interesting.
    USA

  • I loved reading Ida’s review and dreaming about all of the Fellini films that I saw so many years ago. Basil and Fig sound beautiful. I would love to try an Iltalian summer in a bottle. I have never tried any of the Vilhelm fragrances. I need to. California

  • What really caught my attention was the first image with tomatoes that Ida didn’t mention as a note, i bet this has tomatoe leaves mixed with mint? to recreate the basil.
This herbaceus scent sounds bright and elegant, hope it lasts.
    Regards from California.

Never got to try or sample anything from this house yet , and fig is one of my favourite notes !! Would really love to try this !! New York , usa .

  • I love Ida’s review. It is like a beautiful Italian summer in the end of Autumn. I have never experienced a dragon fruit note, so this is intriguing to me! I love the comparison to a film in her review, because after all, both the expressions in a bottle of perfume and in a film are both creative ones. I particularly love this description: “What could be more Italian than “the kingly herb” and the sappy verdancy of fig?”

I would love to win a bottle.

Hello, please enter me in your giveaway! I live in Florida in the USA! What interests me most about this review is specifically one line in this whole review… one that really stuck out to me, and that is: “Basilico and Fellini is a symphony in green in which everything smells as nature intended. It’s brilliant. When you need Italian Summer In a Bottle in any given season, it’s one to reach for.” That to me is just the perfect description and what makes this something I would would love to win! This sounds like it smells amazing! The notes that it lists are all great notes and favorites of mine… to put them all together… simple, yet refined and still powerful, THATS what excites me about a fragrance and this one is no exception! Thanks!!

  • Vilhelm Parfumerie unfortunately i do not know, but Basilico & Fellini perfumer I’m well aware of. Jerome Epinette is well known for his fresh, really pleasing natural smelling fragrances.
Fig is awesome for the summer , I guess the hay and basil will make Basilico & Fellini all year round fragrance.
Please review more Vilhelm Parfumerie fragrances, I’d love to know more.
    In US

  • Judging by the comments, I’m one of the very few familiar with Vilhelm Parfumerie.
Basilico and Fellini is ultra green , there’s fruity sweetness in the background to balance the fresh basil and fig leaves.
It smells natural, I think more of a spring fragrance, but in sunny autumn days it will work well.
Guys get some samples, and try Vilhelm Parfumerie, there are quite a few gems .
Poets of Berlin is my favorite one.
Thanks for the opportunity, all profiles I already follow

  • Reading about Basilica and Fellini made me to find the movie Amarcord to watch. I like Fellini films for their sophisticated mix of comedy and drama. I find fig and vetiver with basil will smell woody freshly amazing.

  • Ida’s review inspired to watch Amarcord, to buy another basil plant, and somehow to get my hands on dragon fruit to cut in half to smell. I have never tried anything from Vilhelm Parfumerie. Jan Vilhelm Ahlgren looks very stylish. And I loved browsing the Merz Apothecary website….Thank you, Ida, for such abundance in this review.

Ida, great review of Basilico and Fellini. What interests me about this fragrance is the note breakdown of the unique dragonfruit note along with some herbal basil, aromatic, green touches, and some sweetness of fig which I absolutely love in fragrances. This combination sounds really pleasant, green, and fresh. I haven’t heard of this house and I would love to try this fragrance. I am from the USA.

  • I’ve been seeing this recently. I didn’t notice that it could be such an interesting scent judging from the bottle style and seeing only basilico whilst missing Fellini. But now it appears much more intriguing with Fellini. (RI, USA)

  • Fragrances in the same ballpark as Basically and Fellini i really appreciate. Green fragrances done the right way just work in those days i want to be alone, and have a walk in the park, or drinking Tea on the porch.
I like putting fresh basil on my salads , another reason for me to be really curious.
I’ve heard about Dear Polly and Morning Chess, but after Barney’s bankruptcy I was under the impression the house is not available in US. Good to know now they work with Europerfumes.

  • Other than Sebastian videos, and one other review on Cafleurebon, I know very little about Vilhelm Parfumerie.
Basil fragrances are rare , it’s not something you see everyday. Fig , hay and dragon fruit, Basilico and Fellini makes me want to all year long in a warm tropical country 🙂
I also have to say Vilhelm Parfumerie bottles look stunning.
