After several years behind the scenes in fine fragrance and marketing, Hungarian perfumer Viktoria Minya took center stage in 2013, initiating Parfums Viktoria Minya. Her first and now iconic creation, Viktoria Minya Hedonist, was an immediate worldwide success. This stunning initial offering was followed in 2014 by Hedonist Iris, Hedonist Rose and Eau de Hongrie and by Hedonist Cassis in 2015. For those of you who have not had the pleasure of the original Viktoria Minya Hedonist, please give it a try. I believe Hedonist to be one of the “must sniff” fragrances of the 21st century. There has truly never been a fragrance like the carnal and incomparable Viktoria Minya Hedonist  – that is not until this year with Viktoria Minya Hedonist Absolute, when after considerable anticipation and hard work, Viktoria Minya introduced three new scents  in the  Viktoria Minya Hedonist Absolute  collection, adaptations of  the original Hedonist as well as the new Hedonist Iris and Hedonist Rose Absolutes.

Hedonist Absolute is obviously related to its predecessor.  The perfumer’s signature and the original   genetic profile are unmistakable.  But with the new Hedonist absolute, Viktoria Minya has suppressed (somewhat) the juicy peach and luscious osmanthus of her first sensual, feminine offering in favor of a darker edge, a more masculine, reserved, insightful soul, soaked in rum, tobacco and smoky birch. The skilled treatment of the honeyed orange flower and jasmine at the heart of Viktoria Minya Hedonist Absolute recalls the 2013 Hedonist Eau de Parfum. But from the first breathtaking experience to the last sigh of vanilla and tobacco, Viktoria Minya Hedonist Absolute, while retaining the power and sultry beauty of the original, is a perfume that stands on its own, a versatile, season-less fragrance suited to a man or a woman.

Notes: Jamaican rum, jasmine, orange flower, birch, tobacco and vanilla.

Viktoria Minya Hedonist Absolute Iris review

While the original Viktoria Minya Hedonist and the new Hedonist Absolute are perhaps best characterized as reflections of one another, similar personas and personalities, one quintessentially feminine, the other somewhat masculine, the first Hedonist Iris and the new Hedonist Iris Absolute are obvious polar opposites. I can’t imagine more divergent presentations of the same iris flower. The 2014 Hedonist Iris is very fresh, clean, sparkling and woody; the cool, wet, spring-time scent of the blossom and of orris butter and black currant, are touched by the chill of late winter and the slightly smoky air of cacao and laudanum.  The new  Hedonist Iris Absolute, on the other hand, is a smooth, very round, elegantly soft presentation of iris. Hedonist Iris Absolute blooms in the late spring sunshine, all the sensual aspects of the flower released via notes of sueded leather, balsamic amber and ripe, rich vanilla.

Notes:  Iris, leather, cocoa beans, vanilla, amber, woods.

Viktoria Minya Hedonist Absolute rose review

Rose.  Photo by Gail Gross © 2019

I was obviously in love with the 2014 Hedonist Rose, as my sample of the perfume has totally disappeared!  My memories and friends’ recollections of the fragrance helped me recall the first Hedonist Rose as a cool rosy, white wine; a crisp and refreshing, spicy rose perfume, touched with the Hedonist penchant for peach. In Hedonist Rose Absolute, the cool white wine of the first rose is transformed into something absolutely divine!  I am in love with the mysteries and Middle Eastern references, the intoxicating warmth of the oriental scents of Turkish rose, dark, precious oud and sandalwood.  But Hedonist Rose Absolute is much more than a nod to an oriental rose attar.  This new fragrance is a uniquely Hungarian/Parisian take on the ancient genre, an amalgam of the depth and peachy sensuality of the original Hedonist perfume with the most fragrant of Turkish roses and the finest, richest ouds and ambers. I now understand why the 16th century Turkish dervish Gül Baba, the Father of Roses, rests forever in Budapest.

Notes: Turkish rose, oud, amber and sandalwood.

Disclaimer:  I would like to thank Parfums Viktoria Minya for the generous samples of the three new Hedonist Absolute Fragrances.  My opinions are my own.

  • “One of the must sniff fragrances of the 21st century”…that alone makes this perfume line worth checking out, especially considering the number of perfumes I’m you all at Cafleurebon sample every day. The new Hedonist Absolute appeals most to me given it sounds like the masculine version of the highly praised original Hedonist. Would love to sample this. Thanks for the draw. Regards from Boston USA.

I personally think Hedonist absolute sounds wonderful with the blend of rum, tobacco with flowers and vanilla, closely followed by the Absolute Rose. I am in the EU and would love to win this sample set.

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Thanks for the review! Never tried to get the nose on any of Viktoria Minya creations in spite of on my want list quite sometimes. Love the description of Viktoria Minya Hedonist Absolute & Rose Absolute, both are appealing more than Hedonist Iris. How nice will it be for getting a sample kit if count me in by letting my relative address in NY, US

  • If I had to pick just one, I don’t know that I could do it! The descriptions are beautiful but this little phrase, “from the first breathtaking experience to the last sigh…” I don’t find many that take my breath away, a few do but that’s what I’m looking for in a fragrance. Great review. I live in Texas. I think Iris would be my choice but like I said, I don’t know that I could pick one.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

These all sound amazing! The Hedonist Absolute sounds incredible but I have not tried the original. Perhaps I will have to do that. Thanks for the review and draw. I’m in the US.

  • Beautiful fragrance descriptions and I am quite intrigued by both rose and iris creations. I am not familiar with the line, so I appreciate the opportunity to win. I’m in the USA.

    I live in the USA.

  • I have a full bottle of the original Hedonist Rose, and I adore that opening white wine note. I cannot wait to try the Absolute.
Thank you for the draw. I live in Canada.

  • It was good to read the story and progression of this scent from its original. It’s a flanker but classy about it!

  • I really enjoyed the thoroughness of the review in its outlining the different facets of each fragrance. I really want to get my hands and nose on that Rose Absolute. YES! I reside in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • I just saw someone talk about Hedonist Absolute and I am curious. Also, how beautiful are those bottles. The review gave a good overview of what to expect from the fragrances, I feel. Rose has become one of my favourite notes so interested in the rose version as well.

    I live in Finland, EU.

  • I’m just as intrigued by the original Hedonist as much as I am about Hedonist Absolute which I’d love to try since it’s more on the masculine side. VA, USA.

  • It sounds like the Hedonist Absolute is the yin of the Hedonist’s yan. These three sound divine but I’d still choose Hedonist Absolute. Thank you for the review and for the giveaway. I live in USA

  • Loved Gail’s review as it compared and contrasted the earlier fragrances and these new ones. I have the original and treasure it. I’m taken with Hedonist Rose Absolute as a peachy rose. Love those notes. Thanks for a wonderful review and a great draw. I’m in the USA

  • I learned something new today from Gail’s writing.About Gül Baba, the Father of Roses. And about the connections of countries and nations that sometimes start with wars but end with respect and cultural collaboration. I would love to try any of Victoria Minya’s creations. USA

  • Gerald Moore says:

This is a house that I am so keen to try and this review makes me even keener! The Rose absolute (or the Iris) sound so my taste!

  • Hedonist Absolute and Hedonist Rose Absolute sound lovely, and the bottles are quite an elegant design.Though I’ve never had the pleasure of smelling the original Hedonist, based upon your “Must-Sniff” comment I may have to give it a try! I can never get enough peach in my life.
    USA

  • The vanilla and tobacco notes of Hedonist Absolute appeal the most! Though I love Iris notes too. The whole sample kit sounds divine. Canada reader.
