“Make Me A Fragrance that Smells Like Love”-apped by Michelyn
In 1947, the perfumers Paul Vacher and Jean Carles were asked by designer Christian Dior to “make me a fragrance that smells like love”. The result was Miss Dior. So what does love smell like? Perhaps not like roses, nor chocolate, but scented whispers from our youth, travels or memories of those we cherish(ed). Over the next week, we will be featuring Valentine’s Day Perfumes where the words, literally speak to love and feelings from the heart in very different ways- Michelyn Camen –Editor in Chief
Les Amoureux de l’Opera, Paris (Kiss on the Steps of the Opera House, Paris) by Robert Doisneau
My feeling for you is like a flower blooming in an empty room” – Montri Umavijani.
Inspired as ever by her father’s poetry, Pissara Umavijani of Parfums Dusita composed her (Art and Olfaction awarded) Mélodie de l’Amour as a spectacularly arranged bouquet of honey-dipped, narcotic white flowers (Gardenia, Tuberose, Indian Jasmine, Lily of the Valley) accented with Peach and Broom, gently laid on a serene, grounding base of Cedarwood and Musk. A divinely balanced blend of longing and fulfillment, romanticism and sensuality, Parfums Dusita Mélodie de l’Amour is the scent of a grand love that may well survive the test of time. Created by Dominique Ropion in 1996, Aimez – Moi (meaning “Love Me”) is the modern reinterpretation of Caron’s “N’aimez Que Moi” (“Love Only Me!”), the iconic 1917 time-capsule fragrance. The story of fidelity promises made by the lovers separated by the WWI. I remember a scene, in Roberto Benigni’s movie “La vita è bella”, where Ferrucio’s character, seeing his beloved Dora in a dark theatre room, whispers intensely: “Look at me, Princess – I’m here. Turn around, turn around.” Sometimes, Schopenhauerian will power is all you need! (besides love). Mixing floral, spicy and woody notes, “Love Me!” summons an iridescent bubble of bright, radiant and confident energy around you, with deep purple powdery hues of violet leaf, airy green sparks of aniseed, and, in the base, a golden brown sweet whirl of vanilla, sandalwood, and amber. –Nicoleta Tomsa, Contributor

Etat Libre D’Orange Une Amourette Roland Mouret (Daniela Andrier): Spicy, seductive Une Amourette Roland Mouret is a gorgeous garconne: masculine swagger draped over a soignee babe in a rubber body dress. Motorcycle exhaust, leather jacket, cigarette ash dropping on crushed flowers; Une Amourette’s negligent sexuality softens to reveal a meltingly lush orange blossom and iris heart. Heated woods, earthy patchouli and smoky, low-key incense wrap their legs around the warm vanillic base and flowers to create a memorably sexy chameleon of a fragrance. Trashily elegant, sexily refined, Une Amourette is one affair to remember, and my favourite of the entire line. Notes: Neroli, iris, vanilla absolute, akigalawood, resinoide incense, patchouli.-Lauryn Beer, Senior Editor

Jul et Mad Amour de Palazzo (Dorothée Piot): Is there a scent to love and longing? A scent for all the days one misses, for the happy memories one keeps alive ere they fade? A scent to a smile long unseen, to a heart blushing and tears of inner joy welling up in one’s eyes? Is there such a scent, really, that warms the body like a lover’s tingle as they kiss? Or like the marvel of true love, like sunshine as it lays on a lover’s neck, as it mingles in their hair? Amour de Palazzo is not a perfume. It is a feeling, a melancholy spreading through your soul and comforting – an unusual embrace of cold spices, nutmeg and ginger, clove and pepper trickles into a pool of castoreum and vintage ionones. Amour de Palazzo is the scent of a present unlocked between past and future loves.-Alexandre Helwani, Contributor

“Designed for Aphrodite, goddess of love, to seduce shepherd boys on the grassy banks of Roseberry Topping” Sarah McCartney’s Goddess of Love and Perfume is a colourful, Bacchanalian feast of fruit fit for Roman emperors. Raspberries, yuzu, peaches, plums and strawberries blend into an intoxicating elixir before melting into a swirl of classic vintage-style oakmoss with the kind of peachy kick Madame Rochas used to have. Smoky myrrh adds solemnity and a touch of worship whilst the now boozy fruit, like a tipsy handmaiden, leads you thrillingly into danger (and you will be helpless to resist). Like a cloak of golden silk, this may cause you to glide imperiously past mortals who swoon in your wake. –Samantha Scriven, Guest Contributor and author of I Scent You a Day
