Bermuda, considered the world’s oldest British Colony was much more formal in the 80’s. Jackets and ties for men and dresses for women at dinner were mandatory. Much has changed since then. The semi-tropical island, just 21 miles long with a cluster of 138 islands is not in the Caribbean as many believe, it’s in the North Atlantic Ocean located 650 miles east of the Carolinas. With over 300 sunken ships dating back to the 1600s, it is referred to as the shipwreck capital with more shipwrecks per square mile than anywhere else in the world! The island’s reefs are mostly responsible along with the island’s long history of piracy. Bermuda, named after the Spanish sailor Juan de Bermúdez, who discovered the islands in 1505 has the world’s fourth-highest per capita income primarily fueled by offshore financial services along with tourism. Its pink sand beaches and clear, cerulean blue ocean waters are certainly one of the main attractions. “Bermuda,” may conjure up the Bermuda Triangle or Bermuda shorts but for me, it is the Bermuda Lilies. Known as the Easter lilies they were introduced to the island from Japan in the mid-19th century. As late as the 1890s, Bermuda controlled fully 90 percent of the lily market in the United States. The Bermuda Easter lily is recognized as the Queen of the white flowering lilies all over the world. Other varieties have their virtues, but none have the perfection of form to equal the Bermuda variety.

The historic Hamilton Princess & Beach Club

The historic Hamilton Princess & Beach Club

On our second visit in 2015, I found a much more relaxed island. Checking into The Hamilton Princess & Beach Club I heard on the in-house TV channel “perfume store.” I asked the concierge where it was and she directed me to the Lily Bermuda boutique which was within walking distance in the town of Hamilton (the capital). Fortuitous indeed! And that’s how I came to discover Lili Bermuda. The boutique, located on the waterside of the shopping avenue was well-appointed and the fragrant drift upon entering enthralled me. I introduced myself to the manager and she gave us a scent tour of the brand’s fragrances. She mentioned that the Perfumery was located in St. George. Alas not able to make it there this time I made a note that upon returning we would visit.

Well, it took nine years before making our way back. Upon landing, we discovered Bermuda has a new state-of-the-art airport. Bermuda is constantly evolving. Staying in Somerset Village, the opposite end of the island from St. George, made it a prohibitively expensive round-trip cab ride (and cabs only take cash in Bermuda!).  Lili Bermuda owner and perfumer Isabelle Ramsay-Bracktstone suggested we take the 45-minute ferry ride from the Dockyards. The scenic ride across the clear blue ocean to St. George was a great way to see to experience the island. An excellent suggestion. Once docked, it was a five-minute walk up the cobblestone streets to Stewart Hall, the 1730s stone cottage that is one of St. George’s oldest residences and owned by the Bermuda National Trust, it exudes eighteenth-century elegance. Upon entering the foyer there is a staircase that separates the two main rooms, the Lili on the left and the Oleander on the right. Greeted warmly by Isabelle we headed to the Oleander Room to the fragrance table. While taking in the fragrances, I asked Isabelle how she came to Bermuda. It was in 2003 when she made it her home from her native Canada (Montreal) when she married her Bermudian husband, Kirby Brackstone. They decided to live in Bermuda for a few years but within a year a unique opportunity arose when she bought and assumed ownership of the nearly century-old Lili Bermuda Perfumery.

The Fragrance Room at Lili Bermuda Stewart Hall

Isabelle went through the fragrances with a deep passion that made it all the more engaging. Two of the fragrances I gravitated to were the Mary Celestia (Jean Claude Delville), and the current release, Island Rose. Why those? Well, I love history, and having an original bottle from the Mary Celestia, named after the Civil War blockade runner that sank off the south shore of Bermuda in 1864, available to be admired (under glass) was sensational. And, the current release, Island Rose, an elegant fresh floral aquatic that’s a collaboration with the historic Hamilton Princess & Beach Club (our connection), is a fragrance inspired by the Harkness Rose that grows on the hotel’s grounds.

The Lili Bermuda Perfume Workshop room

The Perfume Workshop Room at Lili Bermuda Stewart Hall

During the nearly two-hour personalized tour of Lili Bermuda Stewart Hall, there was much to absorb from its history, business, and fragrances. All aspects of the business are conducted on-premise. Isabelle walked us through the property while explaining the process. The top floor is where the assembly and fulfillment are handled. The discovery room is held off the main floor. The Perfume Workshop Learn the Art of Perfumery involves creating a signature fragrance with the assistance of a Consultant Perfumer learning the olfactory pyramid, educate yourself on natural essential oils and specialty aroma molecules. Isabelle informed me that complimentary Tours of the Perfumery are offered daily and the Afternoon Tea in the Gardens is offered on Wednesday and Saturday. Isabelle gives back by offering three-month internship training programs for those aspiring to a career in fragrance where they learn all aspects of the fragrance industry.

I inquired about the painting on the wall and she cited that it was perfumer David Bothello, who she studied under benefiting greatly from his 45 years of experience in the art of telling Bermuda’s story through fragrances. Stepping outside we went through the walled garden, which Isabelle has lovingly restored, and she finds it a source of inspiration. The making of the perfumes happens in a smaller, separate building off the garden. Handcrafted fragrances have been mixed at Stewart Hall since 1928. Back in the main building, I made a note of the fair amount of foot traffic. The Perfumery is a popular destination not only with locals but tourists alike.

Lili Bermuda is one of the island’s most recognizable brands and is beloved and the fragrances are found in many of the island stores. I mentioned to Isabella about my visiting the Hamilton boutique on our last visit. Unfortunately, it was closed owing to the pandemic and the changing retail environment there. Since then Lili Bermuda has opened a store at the National Museum of Bermuda at the Dockyards, the massive complex that is a mixture of stores and restaurants that cater to the cruise ships when docked there.

Disclosure: Upon leaving Isabelle gifted my wife and I a bottle each for our anniversary. Thank you, Isabelle, for your hospitality and generosity, much appreciated.

Hernando’s report on Lili Bermuda captivated me with its detailed exploration of the perfumery’s rich history and personal connection to Bermuda. The blend of historical context and the sensory journey through fragrances like Mary Celestia and Island Rose sounds fascinating. The idea of discovering a perfume inspired by a Civil War blockade runner and the collaboration with the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club adds a unique depth to the experience. I’m also intrigued by the opportunity to learn about perfumery directly from Isabelle Ramsay-Brackstone and the hands-on workshops offered. The passion and dedication evident in the report make me eager to visit and experience Lili Bermuda firsthand.

In the last few months I really have come to love floral fragrances and this one seems to be a very unique one. With how abundant lilies are I’d assume they would be present in this fragrance but they opten to go for the rose Otto Bulgarian which is much more exotic. This to me sounds like a summery floral fragrance, very airy and breezy. The sandalwood in the heart is there to give it some longevity, reminiscent of the breezy and tropical weather in Bermuda. Cheers from the USA.

  • The history! I love so much here and would LOVE to visit here! The shipwrecks, that bottle of the original Mary Celestia perfume, the garden, the historic perfumery! All sounds right up my ally. If I ever get to Bermuda, this will be one of my first stops. I live in the US.

  • The mix of rose and raspberry really sparked my interest it must be a stunning combination of fruity and floral. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

I usually stock up with sample case a soaps and body lotion. I love Bermuda and their history. My favorite place is Georgetown. My friends nephew worked in Bermuda for three years and their daughter was born there. A great excuse to visit but was many years ago

  • What a delightful trip, Hernando! Thank you for sharing this fabulous find on the island. I was intrigued to learn that this brand has been making perfume since 1928. I also love the fact that Isabelle restored the gardens! They are indeed a source of inspiration and joy. H, thank you for a beautiful recount of your recent trip. Happy Anniversary by the way. What a treat to get a tour of Lili Bermuda by the owner herself! If I ever chance a trip, I’ll have to stop in. I love learning the history and story behind a fragrance, and this one is no exception. Thank you for the opportunity to win. I live in Oregon.

  • What a rich history this place has. I’m fully convinced that destiny called Isabelle to this place. It’s such a wonderful story and I love that she has taken both the deep history of the island, as well as it’s flora, as inspiration for their products. I am thrilled to hear about the tours, afternoon tea, and internships offered by Lili Bermuda. I may have to look into booking a trip!

Island rose sounds like a gorgeous scent. Raspberry and rose play beautifully together, and the addition of crushed leaves and aquatic notes will no doubt give it a green and watery facet perfect for the summer (or island) heat. Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

A wonderful piece by Hernando highlighting the history and passion of fragrance steeped in Bermudas history was fascinating. I am a rose lover is this sounds like something right up my street. • My husband and I stayed at the Hamilton Princess resort in 2023 for a short vacation. Although I didn’t make it to the Lili Bermuda Perfumery boutique, there was a selection of her fragrances in one of the hotel shops on the first floor. I recall being impressed by the complexity and sophistication of the fragrances I sampled, Island Rose being one of them. The quality and love for the scents of Bermuda is obvious. MD,USA.

  • I love that the Island Rose is based on a local garden rose, Harkness Rose! Roses do have their own scents for sure and I’m always keeen to try various ones. I also love the idea of this perfume house being run by a loving devoted perfumer for almost a century now. What history! And it seems it’s well loved by the locals and is vibrant as ever. Well done!
I am in US and hoping to try my first perfume from the house. Thank you!

The vivid descriptions of the beautiful Bermuda setting and the detailed history behind the Lili Bermuda Perfumery were captivating. I was particularly intrigued by Isabelle Ramsay-Brackstone’s passionate approach to crafting unique fragrances that reflect the island’s essence. Hernando’s personal anecdotes and the insight into the creation of the Island Rose fragrance truly sparked my interest. The blend of historical context and sensory exploration made this a delightful read. Thank you for sharing such an immersive experience!

Man, this is top tier rose like no other. It contains rose otto and absolute of another type of rose. I’ve heard that both are some of the most expensive ingredients in perfumery, so they are seldom used and sadly often underappreciated. I love a rich, soapy clean flower that maintains a velvety smoothness that remains throughout. Would love to own this stunner and it will be cherished as it should be. From Jacksonville, NC.

  • I went and bought CORAL about 5 years ago. Loved the store and ambiance. Every time I wear it, I get compliments. I have sent many customers to the website. I live in Canada. Enjoyed reading about the history you shared with your readers.

  • This is a perfumery that has captured my attention for years, espcially because of your article about the Mary Celestia. I love that it’s carried on the fragrant traditions for years. thank you for sharing your tour through the store!

  • Lightbearer60 says:

What sparked my interest in hernando’s report was simply the island of Bermuda. I’ve always been captivated by Bermuda in general. We all know about the triangle but to hear more about the island and learn new things like how it’s considered the world’s oldest British colony. To Isabella’s story of moving from Canada to Bermuda, getting married then bought a nearly century old perfumery and making it to the amazing fragrance house it is today. I can go on and on but this is such a beautiful story. And knowledgeable. Either way I learned a lot just reading Hernando’s review. I feel like even if I don’t win, I already won because I learned things I didn’t know and got to hear an amazing story. And the fragrance just sounds magnificent. The Rose and raspberry combo along with the other gorgeous notes sound to me like an instant nosegasm. I can already tell you that I’d instantly fall in love with this fragrance. I would cherish every single spray of this, I would treat it like the treasure that it is if I had the honor of winning such a prize. I want to thank Hernando for his amazingly beautiful and knowledgeable review, I’d also like to thank Isabella and lili Bermuda perfumery and Michelyn and Cafleurebon and everyone else involved in this giveaway. Thank you so much for your kindness and inspiration. Peace and blessings from Ohio, U.S.A

I love to read about other people’s love for Lili Bermuda Perfumery. I too visited from 1981 and fell in love on a tour of the original perfumery. Since then I’ve made more than 10 visits to this magical island that holds a special place in my heart. I love the people first and foremost, the food, my rum swizzles, the history, the interesting caves, museums, & so much more. Meeting Isabelle and touring the perfumery was a beautiful and unique experience. I’ve even donated one of my original bottles to the perfumery where it belongs for the world to see. I’ve been wearing various fragrances from the perfumery, finally settling on my signature scent, Coral. And wearing it daily. This fragrance makes me so happy that if anyone compliments me on “ how good I smell” I give them a sample, of which I carry. I try to spread the love for one of my loves in the hopes of making people smile once they experience Lili. What can I say about Isabelle. Her warmth, knowledge and smile makes her an amazing ambassador on your lovely island. Bermuda is my home away from home and it occupies a special place in my heart.

  • I enjoyed the quick refresher on Bermuda’s history and profile of the Lili Bermuda boutique. It sounds like the brand incorporates the local culture into their locally-made fragrances. Great stop for a memory of Bermuda visitors can take with them.

    I’m in the USA.

  • I found Hernando’s review of the Lili Bermuda tour at Stewart Hall to be an engaging read. The way he painted the picturesque Bermuda setting and unraveled the rich history of the Lili Bermuda Perfumery was truly captivating. I was especially fascinated by Isabelle Ramsay-Brackstone’s dedication to creating fragrances that embody the spirit of the island. Hernando’s personal stories and the detailed look into the creation of the Island Rose fragrance captured my attention. The combination of historical insight and sensory exploration made this report a pleasure to read. Thanks for sharing such an immersive experience!

Thanks for the great writeup Hernando. It was really cool to hear about this brand and learn about the famous Bermuda lilies. I did not realize that the island had such an impressive history of perfumery.

Also the kindness of the brand owner was really something.

This fragrance sounds really interesting because of the use of the multiple kinds of roses and the crushed leaves accord.

Hernando’s report was so interesting because he wrote about some fascinating information regarding Bermuda’s history and geography. I found myself googling many things, to get more information about this paradise. Isabelle Ramsay-Brackstone sounds like the most gracious person, so willing to share the treasures of her perfume company. I would love to try Island Rose, a perfume inspired by a a rose in the garden.

  • Oh, this sounds SO lovely!! I adore when the note of peony is used in a rose based fragrance! It adds such a feminine feel to the scent because of that sweet, powdery note.

That painting is gorgeous! I can see how that painting translates his years of expressing the island of Bermuda through fragrances.

    I live in the USA.

  • Michael Prince says:

What sparked my interest based on Hernando’s report is learning about the history of Bermuda and at one time how Bermuda was in control of 90% of the Lili’s on the market. This has inspired so many things on the Island to include the infamous brand Lili Bermuda Perfumes. This sounds like a beautiful fragrance. I am from the USA.

I absolutely love Lili Bermuda, my favorite is Lili and this is the 3rd time I purchase a 3.4 oz bottle since I have visited Bermuda 3 times and I purchase a bottle on each one of my visits, I recently visited the Perfumerie in St. George this past July during my cruise and loved it, I am inspired by Isabelle’s story and the fact that is a woman own brand, that’s what sparked my interest in the report, I live in Brooklyn, NY…
