Top 10 Fragrances That Get the Most Compliments and Fly Under the Radar + Part 1 Giveaway

What fragrances get the most compliments

collage by Steven©

Steven and I usually wear perfumes just to please ourselves. When they get compliments that’s a bonus. The topic “Fragrances that Get the Most Compliments” is much discussed in online perfume communities. Yet there are perfumes that attract tons of compliments that fly under the radar.  We put together a list of our top ten (which will be a two-part series) These are scents that don’t require you to overspray but rest assured people come up to us and ask what is that perfume that you are wearing because you smell so great.

Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur (Maurice Roucel) 2000: In French, Musc Ravageur translates to devastating musk; it is one of the most sensual of all the Frederic Malle perfumes, so wearing it is bound to get you plenty of compliments. This ambery vanilla fragrance has absolutely no musk in it, which is confirmed by perfumer Maurice Roucel himself; it’s a classic amber with pillowing puffs of vanilla and sweet spices. Kind of cool, a note from Maurice Roucel,” I met Frederic Malle in the 90s, in NYC. He was sent to me by Pierre Bourdon, because at that time Frederic wanted to be an editor of perfume. I told him I had something in my drawer, it was a finalist for Fragile by Jean Paul Gaultier. I gave it to Frederic, and we added a little fresh on the top, and it became Musc Ravageur.” (Editor Ermano Picco wrote that Musc Ravageur is a modern masterpiece) We agree.

Gallivant Naples (Luca Maffei) 2021: We adore all of Gallivant’s perfumes (Michelyn is wearing Tel-Aviv a lot this summer) but Naples gets the most compliments. There is a BIG Calabrian bergamot at the top, which most people notice first. A mix of juicy gingerpink pepper follows and offsets the ozonic and salty notes. With  green textured patchouli and incense that creates smoke on the water, Naples is much more than a generic “freshie”.

Escentric M +mandarin (Geza Schoen) 2021: When the M series debuted Michelyn gravitated right away to +Mandarin (and Geza Schoen knew she would). A word from the perfumer: “Mandarin is so alive, the radiation it creates on the skin and its fruity aroma, a stunning ingredient combined with Molecule 01. A top note ingredient like Mandarin and a base note like Iso E Super to dance together naked like this without other notes in between is rare. -Geza Schoen

Kajal Perfumes LAMAR (Mark Buxton) 2020: While Kajal Homme II and Kajal Faris might seem like the obvious choices as compliment getters, don’t underestimate the appeal of Lamar. Straight out this is a fruit-centric fragrance. It’s not Carmen Miranda fruity-much more urbane and sophisticated, with hints of spices (coriander and cardamom), a touch of toffee and rich rose. Mark Buxton was a great choice for perfumer as he’s able to balance the explosion of tart fruit (pineapple, bergamot, berries) with an ambery vanillic, honeyed base. You can read more about Kajal Lamar in Editor Ermano Picco’s Pitti 2021 report (a Best of Show Award) here

Initio Parfums Oud for Greatness (2018): Oud For Greatness has a cult like following and we understand why. Opening with lavender and saffron  at the top— leathery saffron is the star. The two ouds “complement” each other and this perfume never gets too “oudy” and animalic, rather it has both sweet and savory touches that makes it easy to wear. Did we say it is VERY SEXY. A real crowd pleaser (and that bottle also gets lots of compliments). Notes: Lavender, Saffron, Nutmeg, Natural Oud Wood, Natural Agarwood oil, Patchouli, Muscs

  • Thanks for the giveaway. I’d like to win Oud for Greatness. Decent write-up and a good job by Steven (as usual). Thanks!

  • Thanks for the introduction Michelyn and thanks for the reviews Steven!

I am glad to see that you both also wear fragrances for yourselves mainly. I 100% agree that compliments are just a bonus. It really isn’t something I am fishing for (at least not anymore at my age haha).

I get the feeling that nothing flies under the radar for Steven. if I ever look up a review of a new fragrance I have come across, I will find Steven made a comprehensive review about it. He always explains the fragrances in a way that helps me find my next love in the enormous amount of fragrances that are thrown at me every year. Thanks for shortlisting these 10 and I look forward to trying as many of them as I can!

I would love to win Kajal’s Lamar. I have run out of my Homme fragrance and have a bit left of Homme II so it is definitely time to introduce a new Kajal fragrance. My collection strangely lacks fruity fragrances and feel it would complete the variety!

    Greetings from the UK!

  • Hello !Every time it is very interesting to hear what are yours opinions for the fragrances mentioned. It’s like a roadmap to the whole universe of perfumes. So to start i would say that i didn’t know about the compliments that the “ freshies “ get. It’s mainly because i’m all in the “ gourmands “ and i didn’t notice these fresh beasts. Maybe after reading and hearing your suggestions i would consider testing a fresh smelling fragrances. Thank you for your time spend on making content ! With love from Varna, Bulgaria ❤️

  • ThatMulattoDude says:

I agree with both Steven and Michelyn that compliments are a bonus in fragrance wearing. The only person I really care about regarding this is my wife. I really enjoyed the background info Michelyn wrote, and Steven’s scent pictures are second only to Sebastian. If I were to win, I’d choose Kajal Lamar. Many blessings from VA, USA, thank you!

  • I wanted for some time to try Kajal as I feel they have some interesting scents from the reviews I have read and the reviews I have watched on YT. Never really had the chance, but hopefully this time I am lucky.
I am in the EU. Thanks!

  • Hi! I thought OFG is a strange fragrance, it has something mystic and unique, far from the luxury factor and right into the “WWWT” factor ( wow what was that) in the other hand molecule 01+ Mandarin is really uplifting and hyper realistic citruses on it, just love them

  • Great choices, great perfumes. I always enjoy Steven’s reviews and like Michelyn writing. I would like to win Kajal Lamar as I love pineapple and this is described as fruity….nice.
    I live in London, UK.

  • My choice is Kajal Lamar and I live in EU (Greece)! Despite the fact that this one is my only choice I’m sure it’s a great spicy fruity compliment beast (containing pineapple, one of my favourite fruity notes) full of sensuality! Can’t wait for part 2!

  • Brad Woolslayer says:

I’d love to win Escentric M+ Mandarin. I’ve had great feedback on Molecule 01, and I think the addition of Mandarin would be a positive note for the fragrance. Steven and Michelyn did a great job talking about 5 fragrances that come from 5 different houses. I haven’t tried any of them, but would love to as least sample all of them. I live in Maryland USA.

  • I would love to have kajal in my collaboration sounds amazing and I never tried the brabd before, greetings from Italy, Milan!

  • Sorohan Adriana says:

Kajal LAMAR is my choice! Elegant and classic. It perfect for my taste. I love it! I am from EU.

  • Thank you very much for the write-up and the video. This list has two that I’ve been looking forward to try out – Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur and Initio Parfums Oud for Greatness having tried and loved other fragrances from these two houses. It does not sound like these two would be under the radar but I’d be super stoked to win Oud for Greatness. I’m in USA

  • Michelyn and Steven are great reviewers and I follow their reviews. There choices of most complimented but flying-under-radar items is excellent. Musc Ravageur flies under the radar and it’s one of the most amazing spicy musky choices that a lot if people pass from that brand. People usually shy away from musky frags thinking it would be too animalic. Here it’s blended well. I never tried anything from Gallivant but Naples seems to do the freshies well with an excellent blend of citruses. Escentric+Mandarin also seems like an amazing choice of fresh citrus up top with molecule 1 base. Lamar is an amazing fruity pineapple fragrance with rose undertone with an amazing performance. Of course it will garner compliments with an amazing performance as Steven said. Finally and my favorite is oud for greatness. Steven’s description was great with leathery saffron is the star blended well with oud. This is my favorite genre but oud usually tends to get more animalic but i. This one it seems like it’s blended well to be mass pleasing. Thank you Steven and Michelyn for taking the time to introduce those to us.

I would like to try 3 in this order:
    1- OFG 2-Lamar 3-molecule1+mandarin
    USA

Thank you to all cafleurebon moderators.

  • Thank you for the opportunity. I’d like to throw my name into the Kajal – LAMAR hat please.

  • LATONYA GIPSON-BOWMAN says:

Very nice video Steven, that bottle of Lamar, is calling my name…I would love to win that and get compliments all day

  • richard.delnunzio says:

Great writing Michelyn! It’s interesting that you really highlight the fact that you and Steven where fragrances for yourselves. I have this bad habit of wanting other people to like my fragrance too much, to the point that I forget what I really love.

I would love to have the opportunity to win Moe Khalef by Kajal. It sounds amazing and I have been wanting to try that brand!

Thanks for this very cool opportunity. Hello from the USA!

  • diegoluzzi25 says:

Thanks for the giveaway. I’d like to win Oud for Greatness. Steven you are the best!

  • Andrew Anderson says:

Thank you for the lovely information and the giveaway opportunity. I love the content here and I can always look to you for recommendations that aren’t often talked about or ever talked about at all. Keep going strong and I will always be a fan of the channel.

  • Amanda32828 says:

Excellent review and . I think this review is very much in line with my own opinion. I have to say that I believe that the fragrances mentioned here are without a doubt some of the most complimented fragrances in the perfume industry right now. I have the pleasure of smelling all of these fragrances except Naples by Gallivant and yes they are all outstanding. Quality precedes them. They are excellent. Thanks Steve and Michelyn for an awesome review.
Based on the information provided here and from my own personal experience, I think I would love to win Oud for Greatness. Thank you for the opportunity to participate on this drw, commenting from Orlando, Fl. USA.

  • My choice is the100 ml bottle of Kajal LAMAR. I thought that Michelyn’s written reviews were something absolutely amazing. They were filled with tones of details.I thought that Steven’s video reviews were really professionally made and they were something very pleasant to watch. I think that they are really nice just like th written reviews. I live in Poland, EU. I am a follower. My Insta name — Insztagramekphoto

  • Anthony Currie says:

Thanks for the opportunity to win one of these gems I only smelled a few of them threw samples and will definitely love to win oud for greatness. Thanks.

  • Michelyn and Steven thank you for the introduction of these fragrances.I heard so much about Lamar the Fragrance and beautiful bottle. The second would be OUD for Greatness. Thank you for this Chance USA

  • I have Fragile, too so a cool story by Michelyn about the origins of Musc Ravageur. Steven says Musc Ravageur has been with him since the beginning of his fragrance journey and his empty bottle shows he has worn it a lot. He says about Lamar that it is fruity and can also be worn conservatively. My choice for this draw is Initio Oud for Greatness. I am in US.

  • Thank you for the video content. I have a decent collection and compliments from others go a long way especially from complete strangers. As I have heard so much about Our for Greatness that would be nice choice if I am lucky enough to win.

  • I definitely agree with both Steven and Michelyn, wear fragrance for ourselves but like Steven said a compliment is the cherry on top! I love both the video list review by Steven the video wasn’t really indepth like Steven usually goes with the fragrance reviews it was really to the point and its was funny when he talked about Oud for Greatness possibly choking people out if you overspray. Michelyn reviews always paint me a picture of what scents smell like and this was no different, so informative and nice to read. If I won I would pick Kajal Lamar and I live in the US.

  • Really appreciate you both chose under the radar compliment getting perfume.
From Michelyn I like hearing from the perfumers and her writing is phenomenal. Steven is the best you tube reviewer and I especially learned alot about gallivant Naples i really like kajal Homme II and would chose Lamar for the pineapple USA

  • thefirstpumpkin says:

Thank you for the giveaway and it’s a great thing that you are collaborating with Steven, he’s guilty for me no having money every month LoL, I’d love to win OFG by Initio ’cause smells hella good but it’s really out of my Budget! Greetings from Arizona! And thanks for the opportunity

  • I absolutely love Lamar, it’s so fun and elegant at the same time. Definitely a compliment getter, I may have to wear it to work tomorrow lol. I always enjoy Steven and Micheylyn’s perspectives. I would choose Iud For Greatness if I were to win.

    Indiana USA

  • Ricardo cruz says:

Greetings ! I’ve never won anything but something tells me that this page of which I am a faithful follower will be my amulet!!! Greetings and a big hug to all

  • Bryant Worley says:

I always appreciate Michelyn’s and Steven’s reviews. I learned something new from Michelyn’s review – that there is no musk in Musc Ravageur, and its been talked about by many reviewers (I must have missed when they spoke it). Steven’s review was excellent in breaking down the fragrances, and building enthusiasm for potentially experiencing them. And I’ve been watching Steven for at least 5 years, and I doubt (with his gargantuan collection) that anything has flown under his radar.

It was a hard choice picking between these 3, but I would like to win Oud for Greatness, which I’ve been wanting since it was first produced.

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA.

  • Both reviews were great. I have Oud for Greatness and it is crazy strong on my skin. I spritz will last all day. I recently obtained Musc Ravageur (my first Malle) and it is really good. A blind buy, that I really enjoy, but can’t wait til Fall to really test it proper. I have wanted Molocule + Mandarin for a while now. I only have (my second bottle) of the original Molocule 01, which is in my top 10 favorites. I have not had a chance to try anything from the Kajal house yet, but will hope to soon. Thanks for the draw. My pick would be Escentric M + Mandarin. In the US.

  • Omg! All these picks are awesome! I have a tiny sample of Lamar and Oud for Greatness! I cherish them both!!!! I really enjoy how Steven and Michelyn describe these fragrances!!!! They are all very different and simply unique and amazing!!!! Lamar with the pineapple note is very delicious!!!! Oud for Greatness is deep and sexy!!! I own 5 Escentric Molecules but not the Mandarin one!!!! It sounds very good!!!!! If I had to pick one I would love to get Oud for Greatness!!!! After would be Escentric Molecule +Mandarin or Lamar !!!! I’m from Massachusetts, US.

  • Greg Graham Sr says:

Hello Steven and Cafleurebon and also Michelyn, Great job on the list and video. I love getting compliments. Thank you for generosity. I would love to win and it does not matter which one. Stay safe

  • both Michelyn’s and Steven’s reviews are kept short, sweet and on point. yes, I also wear perfume for myself, and while a compliment feels good, isn’t it true that we hurt when people don’t agree with our wonderful fragrant choices? :))
I’m joining the queue for a chance to win Lamar, since I am living in EU.

  • Nikolina_84 says:

Loved the reviews because I haven’t tried any of these perfumes yet and I do love compliment getters! These will not fly under my radar!

    I’d choose Kajal Lamar.

  • Great list as always. Love the channel and effort you put into your craft. I’d love to win oud for greatness.

  • While Naples by Gallivant sounds intriguing too, I can say right away that my heart wants Lamar created by Mark Buxton for Kajal.
As Steven described rich and juicy pineapple opening with erotic balsamic base it started sounding like the scent I would definitely enjoy.
I am a big fan of Mark Buxton’s work and while I never smelled this one and while I am usually weary of rose in fragrances, after Michelin’s description of the scent as urbane and sophisticated with some spices I am more at ease there. And I have to agree that Mark Buxton is a master of balancing unexpected and “opposite” notes.
All of that makes me very comfortable wishing for luck to win this creation from Kajal.
Thank you for nice reviews. Greetings from Austria, EU

  • Kajal Homme II and Kajal Faris might seem like the obvious choice as compliment getters, don’t underestimate the appeal of Lamar. A beautiful description by Michelyn just really the notes stand out are Rose, Spices and fruity notes. A wonderful review by Steven just adds to the appeal of this fragrance. I follow @cafleurebonoffical on Instagram. Thanks a million from the United Kingdom

  • I am struck by Kajal Lamar just because of Michelyn description and the notes sound sumptuous and beautiful. A brilliant review by Steven as always. I would love to win Kajal Lamar if I am lucky. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • I’m in the EU so I’d like to win Kajal LAMAR. I like the sound of the sophisticated fruitiness which Michelyn mentions, with the warm sensual base which Stephen talks about.

Generally I think it’s interesting that youtubers feel the need to talk about compliments – in one sense, I think it ought to be obvious that a person should wear a scent which other people don’t find unpleasant not matter how much “I wear this for myself” but in another sense a complement is an artificial thing; you want someone to like the way you smell, not just to tell you you smell nice. It’s the difference between hearing a joke and laughing at it, rather than just saying “that’s funny” as if you think others will laugh at it.

  • I rarely if ever wear perfume with the intention of getting compliments, but I would lie if I said I didn’t like when that happens spontaneously. Of your shortlist so far I absolutely love Musc Ravageur, and I never really understood how sometimes it’s refered to as a “challenging” fragrance. I find it so smooth and spicy and sweet and sexy. I have to admit I never got the Molecule series, I don’t really see the appeal, but to each its own of course.

The one I am most interested in is Kajal’s Lamar. I am not a fruit fan, but Michelyn description intrigued me, the sophistication and cardamom note made me wonder if this could be the fruit punch for me. But it was Steven brilliant review that sold it 100%, the mention of rose as a rich component of the middle of the fragrance. Then again, how lucky that it’s part of the give away!
I would love to win it! I am in the EU

  • ianbradleyandrews says:

I absolutely love musc ravageur. I am surprised that it doesn’t have any musc. I love the story about how the fragrance came to exist with Frederic malle. I like how Steven highlighted the dry down of musc. I would love to try oud for greatness. I live in Indiana.

  • I enjoyed the back story of Music Ravageur. From the video I was introduced to the Initio line. If chosen I’d like the Escentric M +Mandarin. US

  • Great choices, great perfumes. I always enjoy Steven’s reviews and like Michelyn writing. I would like to win Lamar as I love Kajal fragrance-I had a chance to try few but Lamar is the best in my opinion.
    I live in Gdańsk, Poland.

  • I forgot to mention that I am also a Redolessence subscriber and I follow your Instagram page @cafleurebonoffical
    Thank you again!

  • I am happy I found your channel and am looking forward to hearing you talk more about fragrances. My spouse has no sense of smell, he wears what I tell him to and has no idea how good he smells lol. I am sure it is a interesting experience to get compliments when you yourself do not smell it. I have not smelled a few of these, and can’t wait to!

  • As usual great content, thorough and with lot of details on perfumes I love.
I do agree with Steven, as compliments are just the icing on the cake, I wear perfumes for myself.
I am curious about Eccentric Molecul, as I’ve never tried the new line and mandarine is one of my favourite notes
I do like Oud for greatness, because as Michelyn as pointed out as an amazing opening with saffron and lavander and then it tones down with an inoffensive oud…really good.
As I love Kajal Lamar, but I do receive a blast of tart fruit in the opening.

Kajal Lamar would be my pick if I win!

    Thx

    Riccardo Italy EU

  • I enjoyed Steven’s special list and his description of Naples by Gallivant. Michelyn, yes, I love smelling like everyone else, especially while wearing my unisex fragrances. I’m a fan of Mark Buxton’s creative and unique fragrances. Lamar would be my first choice, if lucky. Also, would love to experience Escentric M + Mandarin or Oud For Greatness. Thanks for another wonderful draw. Mich USA

  • Great reviews. Even though I tend to wear fragrances for my own olfactive enjoyment rather than any compliments, though I understand the inclination. Personally, I’m most intrigued by Escentric M + Mandarin. I’d love to experience its unusual style.
Part 2 can’t come soon enough.

  • Great list! I’m glad Michelyn and Steven mentioned Musc Ravageur. It’s probably my favorite Malle fragrance. Of those listed, I think I would most like to have Oud for Greatness. Looking forward to part 2! ~Indiana

  • Thanks for the video and intro! I agree, Musc Ravageur is hard to beat. The intro helped me realize there is no musk in it! *head explodes*! Stephen is great at conveying the feel of a perfume without getting overly isoteric, which some reviewers can. I would love to win Oud for Greatness! Thanks from Canada.

  • I have wanted try Kajal Lamar for a while as it has gotten glowing reviews on Cafleurebon. Michelyn’s intro and Steven’s video reaffirm that desire. Thanks for the draw. I am a Redolessence subscriber and am in the USA.

  • Great reviews from Michelyn and Steven! While I’ve had my eye on Oud for Greatness for some time now, I was completely drawn in by Steven’s description of the rose adding to an overall very sensual experience in Kajal LAMAR. Michelyn noting toffee in the fragrance only added to my interest—though I will say her emphasis that Oud for Greatness is very easy to wear AND very sexy reminded me what I loved so much about it the first time I smelled.

Even though it’s a bit of a risk given that I love Oud for Greatness and have never tried LAMAR, I’m actually going to say LAMAR is the pick I’d have of these fragrances listed! (Someday I’ll get my hands on Musc Ravageur and give it a try as well!)

Thanks so much for the giveaway, as always!

  • David Sommer says:

I’m just getting serious into cologne. The problem is, I can’t afford what I really like. I’ve been getting more into the niche scents. I just got club de nuit intense man. I also like powdery scents. I am new to your channel and I look forward to viewing more of your posts.

  • Beautifully written by Michelyn and Steven is detailed and to the point as always.
I would pick Kajal Lamar. The fruity notes with an ambery vanillic base sounds beautiful.
    I am in the EU.

  • AdventurousFox says:

Thank you Michelyn for teaching me something today – I had no idea Musc Ravageur in fact contained no musk! Even though I haven’t clicked with many Frederic Malle perfumes one thing I have to admit is that they’re all masterfully composed and deserve a lot of respect, especially the classics such as this one.

Steven’s video elaborates a bit more on each fragrance and I feel like I can smell them or at least imagine how they smell with high accuracy. Discovering this blog has been the greatest thing that happened to me lately, really. One thing that got my attention is when he said “spray conservative” and then mentioned 5 sprays. Maybe I’m old school or just own strong fragrances, but 5 sprays is not something I’d call conservative, especially for a perfume like Oud for Greatness. Seems like it would choke everyone out and be appropriate for outdoor spaces only.

I would like to win Kajal Lamar, as someone who usually doesn’t like fruity fragrances (never say never), this one seems like a gateway drug. Would like to know how it performs in both hot and cold weather, because from the description it sounds like it would work very well in both.

  • Steve is the go to guy for niche, and his descriptions are great here, as usual. Michelyn’s comments set up the video perfectly. I also follow on instagram @neefast. If I win, I would like Lamar. NV, USA.

  • As usual Steven is spot on with his reviews. He was definitely right about the 30-40 minute wait with Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur. I definitely noticed the same when I had a sample awhile back. and the cult following to Oud For Greatness….I am definitely a part of. got a few 10ml sampes from my local niche fragrance store that I used very quickly and had to get a bottle. I recently just got my first fragrance from Kajal so with Steven and Michelyn having this on the list I am interested. I see Michelyn mention the toffee and rose in the fragrance and Steven mention that pineapple opening….I want to experience that. This was definitely a great start to the list and I am looking forward to part 2.

    I live in Dallas, TX

  • I didn’t realize there was no musk in Musc Ravageur! It’s a testament to the skill of Maurice Roucel that he was able to use other notes to create the scent of musk. Great reviews from Steven as always. I would love to have a bottle of Kajal LAMAR. I’ve tried a sample and I can’t stop thinking about it. I’m in MD, USA.

  • Oh boy, I loved this selection because these fragrances are not so hyped but get me a lot of compliments and I usually make people turn heads.
Mychelin always does a great job on reviewing, and Steven is the best youtuber on fragrances out there.
I would love to win Oud for Greatness by Initio
    I live in the USA.

  • Beck Dickerson says:

Hey! I had a pleasant time hearing about michelyn and stevens most complimented frags, definitely put a few new ones on my radar. I don’t know if this is exactly “under the radar” but PDM sedley gets me the most complimets out of all the PDMs that I own, most likely it’s due to its easy going barbershop/blue qualities. If I do win I would love to have a bottle of Kajal Lemar

  • As always, I appreciate both Steven and your opinions on the fragrances. He suggests that citrus fragrances are crowd pleasing compliment monsters, however, I have not experienced that as a whole. Of these three, I would love to try Initio Oud for Greatness because I like the leathery saffron oud combination. I have had Initio Rehab and really appreciate their quality. Thank you for the draw. USA

  • Nice reviews Michelyn and Steven! As you both, I use perfume to please myself, but who doesn´t like to be complimented ( the cherry on top that Steven says) by the scent we wear. The different styles of the chosen ones, mean that people are open to all kind scents, from the classic spicy oriental of Musc Ravageur (the 20 min drydown to get the Ohs thanks to the vanilla …) to the citrus, saltry, crunchy Gallivant Naples (again the drydown with incense gets the ohs). The fruit (juicy pinneaple) and flower bomb oriental of Lamar Kajal (love the tart fruit Mchelyn points out) . The compliments of the Iso E plus the natural and organic mandarin gets also a lot of attention of the people. Initio gets a lot of compliments but the Oud for Greatness if not over applied rings the bell too. I live in Spain, EU and I like to win Kajal Lamar.

  • I would choose Lamar should I win. For me, perfume is personal but I do love when someone tells me I smell fantastic. I have even turned some folks on to certain scents. They have liked them enough to ask where to get them. That is very fun to me. And my youngest son likes to play guess that scent with me. He will spray a scent either on himself or on a strip then make me figure out which perfume it was. In maryland

  • Being a fan of Escentric molecule
Please enter me for the one with mandarin
Loved the video and the written reviews especially about Maurice Roucel and there is no musk in musk ravageur and that Steven says it needs time to develop

  • PhillySniff143 says:

I usually enjoy both Stevens and Michelyns reviews, but I disagree with both on this one. My point of contention is the “under the radar” description. Lamar and Oud for Greatness are far from under the radar. Well known, widely loved, and big earners for the respective brands. The Galavant…yes. Should I win, I’d like Oud for greatness. I live in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. I follow you on Instagram @sobermindedmusic

  • Id Like to win Kajal LAMAR. It was so fun reading under the radar choices and really interesting watching the video with describing the notes. Im from the EU.

  • I can easily see Musc Rav being a compliment getter and glad you bring up there being no muscs. I reside in the us and Lamar would be my 1st pick.

  • These are some fantastic fragrances. I can not stress the fact enough to wear fragrances that you like, that please you, and if you get a compliment then it is a bonus. The fragrance you wear is a statement maker, just as much so as the clothes you wear. Steven points out a great fact about Oud for Greatness in regards that less is more. When you don’t dowse yourself in OfG but rather sparingly wear it, that little bit a fragrance creates an alluring aroma that people around you really enjoy. Thank you to all the company’s that are allowing someone to win a bottle of their fragrance!
I would choose Initio Parfums Prives Oud for Greatness
    United States of America

  • Some surprises like Molecule + Mandarin and Gallivant Naples. Loved Steven video and Michelyn writing! Thanks Geza Schoen and Maurice Roucel for giving your takes.
Molecule M+ Mandarin for me as I have the + Iris and went through the bottle.

  • What a beautiful review! Truly! I do agree that while compliments are nice, it’s more about how we feel wearing these fragrances that matter. I’ve sampled Oud for greatness and it unfortunately was not my cup of tea. I found it entirely too masculine. Stevens review was excellent and very detailed! If I were to win, I would love to win Kajal’s Lamar. Greetings from the US!

  • Thanks for the giveaway.
It was pleasure to know Michelyn’s and Steven’s selections of the most compliments getter perfumes.
Love Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur very much and would like to test Naples.
I would like to win Oud For Greatness.

  • Amazing choices and amazing reviews, thank you Michelyn and Steven for introducing them to us!
I’d love to try Kajal Lamar.

  • Loved both of your reviews! I can’t help but be excited when I get compliments on a fragrance I am wearing. I certainly choose a scent based on what I enjoy. But it’s always such a treat when someone else goes gaga when they come up and hug me and say “oh my gosh, you smell SO good! What are you wearing????” It’s always doubly great when it happens to be a really inexpensive fragrance.
The 3 fragrance choices for the giveaway are all incredible and so difficult to choose just one. But I am really smitten with Initio Parfums and would love to finally own Initio Parfums Oud for Greatness. It’s a scent both myself and my boyfriend can each enjoy and wear.
    I live in the US.

  • Thanks for the introduction Michelyn and thanks for the reviews Steven!I am agree that compliments are like bonus and we must to wear perfume for first of all, enjoy yourself.
    I love selection of perfumes!
I would love to win Oud for Greatness.

Just like Michelyn and Steven, I wear perfume for myself, however a nice compliment is always appreciated so I am very grateful for this article and review. I appreciate Michelyn’s concise, informative and quite personal approach, and Steven’s contagious enthusiasm. Michelyn and Steven are so right about M1 + Mandarin, the addition of mandarin orange to ISO E Super is beyond fabulous – so real, genuine and energizing! I have gotten it earlier on this summer and adore it every time I wear it. I have smelled Musc Ravageur and loved it so much I’d like to own it one day. Kajal has been on my radar for a while too so it is my choice in this draw. Thank you from the EU

Compliments are really the cherry on top!
I do appreciate this kind of lists, because they show a particular aspect of a fragrance making connections with others.
I’d love to get a compliment with Kajal LAMAR.
    I’m in EU, Italy.

  • I’m not saying that, just because I’m a Pastry Chef, but almost all of the compliments I had are for gourmand fragrances. I like getting compliments, but it’s my top priority. Like Michelyn said, it’s a bonus.
☆ I haven’t smelled Musc Ravageur in many years, I’ll have to revisit it
☆ Cardamom Ginger Cake with Lemon Curd, while sitting right next to the ocean somewhere in Naples , that’s how Naples smells like.
Istanbul is my favorite Gallivant . Smells like a standard German Stollen Cake and it’s loud , love it.
☆ Escentric Molecules fragrances I use if I want to prolong the longevity of other perfumes, giving them some woody or fresh twist.
I wonder what kind of twist Escentric M+ Mandarin will give to my gourmands? Zesty qualities makes it so versatile and inviting. Of course it’s also Michelyn favorite one from the M series
☆ Lamar is the best Kajal in my opinion, smells like rose petals and Vanilla Cake with Strawberries and Pineapple , I do it almost every day at my bakery.
☆ There are two Initio Parfums I know now , Oud for Happiness, and Side Effect. Oud for Happiness smells like Space Cake , with lots of ginger, you can get in most coffee shops in Netherlands, and now in some states in US.
The other Initio Parfums fragrance i know is Side Effect, smells similar to Vanilla Bean Bundt Cake , drizzled with Rum.
I love smelling, and cooking with saffron and nutmeg, I need to try Oud for Greatness too.
Kajal Lamar is the fragrance i’d like to win
Appreciate Michelyn and Steven reviews, and the giveaway campaign

  • I really like the diversity Steven provides in his list here: something for every occasion. I found Michelyn’s note about Musc Ravageur from Maurice Roucel about how the fragrance came to be very interesting. I would like to win Lamar from Kajal. I live in NY and follow the Cafleurbon Instagram (username wrm_01.)

  • I loved reading and listening to reviews of all the perfumes, but especially the ones for Oud for Greatness. Both Michelyn and Steven talked about the balance between sweet and savory elements, which interests me a lot as someone who prefers less sweetness in perfumes. Oud for Greatness is the one I’d like to win, if chosen. I’m in MN, USA and follow you on instagram too!

  • Hi everyone!
This is a great article and Steven did a wonderful job with the video, as always.
It will never stop to be a pleasure to listen to his recommendations!
I’d love to win Oud For Greatness, I’ve never smelled it but I’m a super Oud lover.
    Thank you for this opportunity!

  • Love how Michelyn’s and Steven reviews are always so informative. From the perfumers and creators to the bottle and notes. Would love to win Kajal Lamar. Greetings from TX USA

  • IvanVelikov says:

Sure i acknowledge the compliments I receive, but more often i get compliments for the way I’m dressed, than for the fragrance I’m wearing. I also believe people are more likely to compliment me, and ask about my fragrance if I’m dressed up . Not all, but most of the compliments I received lately, were when I was wearing a suit, and very few when i was wearing something more casual, like jeans, short sleeve shirt and white sneakers.
    Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur I don’t know yet… I know , I know , don’t judge me.
Naples sounds really good, well-rounded blend of woody , aromatic, spicy, earthy and smoky parts.
I’ve sampled Kajal Homme II , and Dahab .
Homme II is dressed up fragrance, and Dahab sweet juicy gourmand done really well . Smells natural to me, with nothing artificial in it , the same thing I’m expecting from Lamar.
Molecule 01 I use for layering purposes, works really well , I’m curious about the added mandarin in Mandarin M+
I know 4 Initio Parfums fragrances Side Effect , Oud for Greatness , Atomic Rose and Psychedelic Love , and also in my possession is 7.5ml travel sprayer of Side Effect
Oud for Greatness is indeed more savory , than sweet and also spicy , oudy , musky and leathery. Smells fantastic, and I agree with both of you , it’s very sexy.
After some hesitation between the three fragrances, my pick would be Initio Parfums Oud for Greatness
Thanks to Michelyn, Steven and all the brands.

  • Hi Michelyn & Steven!!! ❤️❤️❤️ I already own all these Amazing fragrances (so don’t enter me in the draw), but I just wanted to send love & compliments!!! Maurice Roucel is a Genius! Musc Ravageur is to die for! The other bottles are fantastic as well! Loved reading Michelyn’s refined introduction and watching Steven’s detailed review. Love ÇaFleureBon!!! ❤️❤️❤️

  • As far as I’m concerned compliments are a bonus at best. The most important thing to me is the smell, and if the fragrance makes me feel good. Positive attention, or even negative one can’t change my mind , if I like the fragrance , I’ll buy it and wear it , if I don’t, I won’t.
Musc Ravageur is controversial fragrance, some absolutely love it , but a lot of people hate it. It surprised me there’s no musk , but it’s pretty musky scent.
Naples and patchouli, sea , woods , salt, ginger and juicy Calabrian bergamot , vacation in Naples came to mind.Gallivant fragrances I know , Brooklyn I share with my husband, he also has Tokyo , I much prefer to smell on him .
Geza Schoen I know because of Ormonde Jayne fragrances he created , Escentric Molecules fragrances I have never smelled
Dahab I like a lot, it smells like picnic basket full of fruits , juiciness and other surprises. Lamar sounds like it’s cut from the same , or similar cloth , high end a party all night long fragrance.
Rehab is one of my husband’s favorite fragrances , and my younger cousin 24 , bought Oud for Happiness.
Lavender and leathery saffron , heavy on the oud in the base , Good to know it’s not animalic type of oud . Hints of sweet touches , but more savory , patch too ? Oud for Happiness is a must try.
    My choice is Kajal Lamar
    Thank you for the opportunity

  • Michael Prince says:

Awesome topic being the top compliment getters. I personally have only tried Lamar which smells amazing, but I’ve heard great things about all of them. I agree with Steven and Michelyn in that I don’t wear fragrances for the compliments, I wear them for myself, but it’s a nice added bonus. I am following @cafleurebonofficial on instagram under @michaelprincefragrance If I win the giveaway I would choose Initio Oud For Greatness. I am from the USA.

  • Escentric M + Mandarin would be my choice I love tge freshness of orange just has a tendency to brighten the day.

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the nice list Steven, Michelyn.

I do think this list has some hard hitters and some very well known fragrances. I also fall into the category of being someone who wears a fragrance for myself.

I loved the description fo Escentric M + Mandarin and would love to get my nose on it. Geza’s work on highlighting single Molecules and using them to showcase their potential in fragrances was an industry changing apporach.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • Regis Monkton says:

I’m like Steven and Michelyn in the sense that I too wear fragrances for myself and if someone else likes it, then I’m glad that it’s not a problem for them. I appreciate Michelyn’s description/insight into these fragrances, especially her description of “Lamar”. I appreciate Steven’s description of “Lamar” and after hearing what he said about it, I hope to win Kajal “Lamar”. I live in the U.S.A. I follow Cafleurebon on Instagram (@regismonkton)

  • I always really enjoy Steven’s reviews. I definitely would have to agree with Musc Ravageur, it’s so beautiful and alluring. I didn’t know the backstory behind it though! I haven’t tried any of the others, but I’ve always been a fan of those more subtle, less common gems. I always wear a perfume for myself, as I’m usually the one who can smell it the best/most.

My choice of prize would be Kajal Lamar.

I live in the USA. I also follow cafleurebonofficial on Instagram. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Thanks for the interesting list. I haven’t had a chance to try any of these, so I’ll keep them in mind for future sampling. I liked the anecdote from Maurice Roucel that Michelyn shared—it’s funny how these things come together sometimes. Of the fragrances profiled, I’m most interested in Musc Ravageur; a “classic amber” works especially well as we move into the cooler months. Regarding Steven’s video, I liked how he likened wearing fragrances that appeal to others as a larger part of being well groomed. I primarily wear fragrances for my enjoyment, but I do think about what others will enjoy—or not enjoy—if I’m going to be traveling with others or in the office, and spray judiciously. He also rightly noted that some fragrances will smell their best an hour or so into the wear; I can think of one personal favorite that really comes into its own hours after spraying.

I’m in the midwest, USA. I follow @cafleurebonoffical on Instagram. I’d love to win Initio Oud for Greatness.

  • One of the best, if not the best article lately !
I can’t say I don’t like compliments, but they add little to nothing to my mood when I’m wearing certain fragrance . Even the warmest compliments are like the tablecloth in a 3 star Michelin restaurant, I know it’s there, but it’s not part of the menu, and my overall experience.
Since I know all fragrances Steven and Michelyn picked, I’ll share my thoughts as usual:
    1. Musc Ravageur by Frederic Malle
I fully agree with Ermano, it is indeed modern day masterpiece , but if if was me , I’d never put it in my Top 10 compliment magnets. On the contrary , like I discussed with Steven in the comments in his YouTube video, Musc Ravageur is by far the fragrance that got me the most NEGATIVE feedback during the years, well over 100 , and I’m not exaggerating one bit.
I collect fragrances for over 25 years now, with over 400 bottles in my possession, and no other comes close in the same , negative regard. Negative feedback doesn’t bother me at all .
Also I’d like to point out Musc Ravageur went through a few reincarnations during the years, vintage one pre-Estee Lauder was way more musky , animalic , and heavy on the cloves. Latest version is much sweeter, well dipping into gourmand territory, and the musky and animalic facets are toned down significantly.
My favorite Frederic Malle fragrance are:
    1) The Moon
    2) Portrait of a Lady
    3) Musc Ravageur
The Moon and Portrait of a Lady are both compliment magnets.
    2. Naples by Gallivant is fun , welcoming and it’s composed by Luca Maffei .To me up until now at least … top 3 Gallivant fragrances are:
    1) Istanbul – by far the best one.
    2) Berlin . On my 2nd bottle.
    3) Brooklyn/Naples
The one Michelyn loves , Tel-Aviv turns indolic on me ,
    3. Molecule 01 + Mandarin by Escentric Molecules is fresh, invigorating and easy to wear
    4. Lamar by Kajal , awesome brand , my favorite ones
    1) Lamar/Almaz
    2) Dahab
    3) Kajal Homme/Fiddah
Lamar to me is juicy, sweet pineapple, spicy cardamom and peppery rose
    5. Oud for Greatness by Initio Parfums, is special , I would call it sexy too
It’s savory , sweet , spicy , and leathery , Michelyn took the words out of my mouth.
My overall Initio Parfums rating would be:
    1) Side Effect
    2) Oud for Happiness/Oud for Greatness
    3) Absolute Aphrodisiac
    I’d like to win Lamar
Of course I follow you on Instagram , like I follow Steven , Frederic Malle, Gallivant, Escentric Molecules, Kajal and Initio Parfums, @waltherp99bg
    Thanks a lot

  • I always love Steven’s reviews as a sub to his channel. He is very descriptive and informative of these fragrances. Michelyn always is stellar in the fragrance profile of choice and capturing all of the nuances of a scent. My choice is Initio Oud for Greatness. Thanks for the giveaway. CA, USA.

  • Compliments ? I believe I’m somewhere in between , I like when people like the way I’m dressed, and/or the way I smell, but I never looked for praises, if it happens- good, if not I’m good again. In no particular order:
-Simplistic approach , city inspired fragrances, decent prices, the new Gallivant presentation is on point too. I like Amsterdam , Tel Aviv ,Bukhara and Istanbul .Naples i think is posh woody , ginger and incense scent, with lots of Italian passion .
    – I’ve heard the name dozens of times, but still i don’t have experience with Escentric Molecules fragrances.
    – Oud for Greatness , considered by many the best one in Initio Parfums catalog i know, formal occasions only fragrance
    – Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur I smelled long time ago, 8 years maybe , and my impressions back then were not as good . Steven and Michelyn are fans i see.
    – Half classy and refined, and half playful and maybe even slightly lustful , i think I can make a statement wearing Lamar.I like the rose, the citruses, and the tart and mildly sweet fruity base , sophisticated fragrance at its best.No wonder Lamar means gold. I know Joorie, because my sister in law wears it regularly, but it’s the only Kajal scent I know.High quality spicy sweet rose ,with honey , I like it a lot.
    Kajal Lamar would be great
    Thanks for the draw

    Greetings everyone
Steven Gavrielatos sent me here from his YouTube channel. It’s my first comment on your blog. I don’t know if i have to introduce myself first, but I’m American living in Paris, and I work as a jeweler.
Out of the 5 niche brands i have smelled only fragrances from Initio Parfums.
Oud for Greatness is woody , sweet and long lasting.
I’m interested in Lamar because of pineapple and rose .
    Thank you

  • As always, absolutely enjoyed Steven’s review of the most complemented fragrances that fly under the radar. Loved Michelyn’s detailed analysis of all the fragrances as well! I would like to win the ‘Oud for Greatness’ by Initio Parfums. Love from USA!
