Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of the earth.” —Henry David Thoreau

Once in a rare while, I discover a perfume that reminds me why I love perfume. It’s a discovery that’s reassuring in the acknowledgement that fragrance can be heart-meltingly beautiful; it’s also eternally baffling as I ponder the intrinsic magnificence of the invisible. Eau Coeur, the new Eau de Parfum composed by Maurus Bachmann for Thomas De Monaco, is (spoiler alert!) a glorious achievement and serves as an imperative reminder that beauty is all around us, even when it’s invisible.

Thomas De Monaco, based in Paris and Zurich, is a creative director, photographer and artist who has created campaigns for Armani, Hermès, Chanel and Dior. In December of 2020, after three years of work, Mr. De Monaco launched his first perfume, Raw Gold, which became an instant obsession among perfume-lovers and those in-the-know. A limited edition, Raw Gold sold out several times over and more than lived up to the hype (Raw Gold was easily one of my top discoveries last year). It would be no easy feat to follow-up the success of his debut, but with Eau Coeur, Thomas De Monaco has again struck gold.

According to the brand, Thomas de Monaco Eau Coeur is “an intense encounter with blooming splendour. The magnificent, alluring and graceful moment, simultaneously tender yet evocative in its delicateness. In its wake a blend of lingering sensual tenderness and infinite, passionate seduction. Eau Coeur is a radiant fragrance, straight from the heart, desiring love.” Oh, how I wish I’d written that! Perfumer Maurus Bachmann’s composition opens just as described, with a bright white flash of pink pepper, magnolia oil and osmanthus absolute ribboned through a sensual red rose accord. There’s a freshness, yes, but it’s also full-bodied with the assertiveness of a handsome stranger’s locked gaze.

In the heart of the fragrance, stoic notes of Virginia cedarwood and oakwood emerge, adding depth, gravity and balance to the floral elements. Here I am assured that Eau Coeur is unquestionably genderless. The composition grows sweeter and more sensual through its development as tonka bean absolue mingles with a sensuous musk, diffused through a generous dose of ambrox. The raw ingredients are clearly among the finest available and with Mr. Bachmann’s deft ability, tell a story of love and beauty. “Coeur,” by the way, is French for “heart.” With a full heart, surrounded by invisible beauty, I’m reminded of the words of the philosopher and poet, Dr. Debasish Mridha: “A loving heart is a magical magnet for magnificence.”

Notes: Top: Magnolia Oil, Osmanthus absolue, Pink Pepper; Heart: Rose Maroc, Virginia Cedar, Oakwood; Base: Tonka Bean absolue, Musk, Ambrox

I love the mission purpose of this fragrance of making the invisible visible. It is a struggle that most people in society face, and I love how Thomas De Monaco created a scent to break that barrier between two strangers. I live in New York, USA.

I first heard about Thomas de Monaco fragrances earlier this year when someone was speaking highly of “Raw Gold”. I’ve been thinking that even though “Raw Gold” contains civet musk, I’d still like to try it. This new one from de Monaco sounds like another one I’d like to try. I like when Michael says “The composition grows sweeter and more sensual through its development as tonka bean absolue mingles with a sensuous musk, diffused through a generous dose of ambrox. The raw ingredients are clearly among the finest available”. I want to see what the woody and floral ingredients in this fragrance are like. I live in MD, U.S.A.

  • Love the notes in Thomas de Monaco Eau Coeur and the fact that very high quality ingredients have been used in Thomas de Monaco Eau Coeur. No experience with this brand so I’d love to try it. Thanks for the review and draw. I am in the continental United States.

  • Thomas De Monaco is an amazing perfumer and I am so intrigued by this perfume and would love to smell it asap. I have tried Raw Gold and it was something out of this world, just amazing! I think that the notes of magnolia oil and Osmanthus absolute would make this the perfect fragrance for spring,
    USA Virginia here.

  • Eau Coeur sounds lovely. Magnolia is such a wonderful note when employed tactfully, and it works well with cedar. It also sounds like Thomas De Monaco works with restraint; this notes list isn’t extensive and most of these are easily recognizable notes. I’d love to try this “heart-meltingly beautiful” perfume. Thanks for the review, Michael.

Thanks for the great review Michael.

I do wish I had a chance to smell Raw Gold – it sounds like a fabulous fragrance.

This sounds like a really nice floral fragrance. Great combination of florals, especially the magnolia and the osmanthus on the top, with the cedar in the bottom, really making this sound genderless.

    Cheers from WI, USA
