Show not what has been done, but what can be. How beautiful the world would be if there were a procedure for moving through labyrinths.” Umberto Eco

In ancient times, people believed the world was composed of four fundamental elements: earth, air, fire, and water. However, when it came to the celestial bodies – the stars and planets –  they thought them to be made out of something entirely different. During the Middle Ages, this mysterious substance was referred to in Latin as quinta essentia, meaning “fifth essence” and it was thought to be vital to all matter, many believed that isolating it could hold the key to many answers, including curing every disease. The term “quintessence,” derived from quinta essentia, remains in use today to describe the purest form of something, and quite interestingly, modern physicists have given the concept a fresh spin, using “quintessence” to describe a type of dark energy that is believed to constitute nearly 70 percent of the energy in the observable universe.

Perfumer Chris Maurice

Perfumer Chris Maurice

So, who better to craft olfactory alchemy in Testament London Quinta Essentia than the master himself, Chris Maurice? His creations strike with the precision of a perfectly composed melody – and you recognize his touch from the very first note. Bold, vertical, and flawlessly structured, his fragrances showcase both his technical brilliance and his creative flair. And when it comes to his constructions on themes of alchemical depth, his work is pure magic, and the first that come to my mind go from the sparkling elegance of Xerjoff Alexandria II to the posh plushness of Opera to my beloved Kemi’s Layla or the bold Manos Gerakinis’s Anthem. There’s a special recipe to the way Chris Maurice balances the velvety richness of the perfect rose with the smoky depth of oud – in all creations, different facets, and different moods come to light.

I tend to enter a pretty hyperfocused state of when I dive into work (and no, I’m not talking about writing, this never feels like work, even when IT IS :P) and I’ve got a whole set of idiosyncrasies that make some people sigh in exasperation: the lighting has to be just right, my hair can’t touch my face, I can’t listen to music, and -gasp- I can’t wear perfume. Well, almost. There are a few exceptions, ironically enough, and they’re the same Jo Malone scents I wear to the gym. One day, in the middle of a deadline frenzy, I dived into work forgetting I’d sprayed a couple (okay, more than a couple) of generous spritzes of Quinta Essentia on my wrists earlier. Hours later, after tweaking pixels in that hyper-focused zone, I realized I’d been surrounded by it the whole time – present, but never overbearing. It felt like it had seamlessly become part of my mood, like it belonged there all along. The next day, I decided to wear it on purpose and pay attention to how it made me feel. And, well, let’s just say things got interesting.

If you’ve read any of my articles, you probably know by now: for me, “a rose is a rose is a rose,” and I have nothing but love for any fragrance that showcases my velvety kryptonite. Whether smeared with lipstick, smoked in incense, covered in chocolate, buried in patchouli, dipped in oud, or scattered along fine wood grains  – if it’s rose, I’m here for it. Be it the star of the show or just whispering from the dark corners, be it bright, dewy, or the dark, crimson gothic petals, and everything in between – color me smitten. For me, Quinta Essentia is a good example of what an abstract yet true-to-form interpretation rose-oud combination should really feel like.

The Name of the Rose 1986 movie IMDb

One of my favorite visual metaphors of all time is the labyrinth from The Name of the Rose – a movie I’m convinced rewired my brain when I watched it as a (very) small child. I find myself thinking of the labyrinth more often than I like to admit – such a brilliant representation of an open-ended, non-linear space. There, meaning constantly shifts and evolves – an interplay of free will and determinism, where choices within its twisting corridors aren’t just navigating yourself a way out – but about growth, error, and the relentless search for understanding. Staring at my screens while tweaking away in Unreal sometimes feels like navigating a maze where I’m both the architect and the one trapped inside it – building as I go, in control but unaware of the big (big) picture. Adjusting lights, shifting angles, writing a new line of dialogue for an NPC, then stepping back to see it from the player’s point of view – it’s all part of the process. Sure, it’s just pixels, but each one carries its own purpose, case-and-effect, shaped by the logic assigned to it. Reality feels much the same – energy molded by rules we take for granted… but every so often, when you shift your perspective, it’s like hitting “~no clip” in real life, slipping past the barriers of what’s solid and catching a glimpse of something deeper, just beyond reach. There are countless keys scattered across time and memory, and what they unlock depends entirely on how you choose to turn them.

Testament London Quinta Essentia is both a literal rose and an abstract construct, mirroring the fragmented, fluid nature of our own timeless journeys. Chris Maurice’s creations are hard to pin down into the parts that make the sum – as they’re organic, shapeshifting beasts that don’t let their magic be fully captured in a simple fragrance pyramid. The scent opens with a vibrant blast of spice – cardamom and pepper crackle against the skin – before melting into a dusty red rose, intertwined with the carnal facets of jasmine. Patchouli and vetiver lend it the earthy breath of an ancient cellar as if the door creaks open to reveal ancient secrets. Vanilla and tonka smooth and sweeten the edges just enough, taming the composition without dulling its beautiful depth. All the while, oud growls softly in the background, ever-present but never overpowering – the beautiful beast trapped in the rose labyrinth.

There’s a quiet space woven into the perfume’s texture – it’s never too loud, too harsh, or too much. Meditative and grounded, this is a rose that feels like it was conjured from a recipe hidden in an ancient grimoire, yet it’s airy and futuristic enough to feel almost weightless. I can’t think of a better name to describe this multilayered rose, that is indeed, of the fifth dimension… and for those who appreciate the details as much as I do, let me just say: the sprayer delivers one of the finest mists I’ve ever encountered – an elegant finishing touch to an already smooth experience.

Testament London is a niche perfumery house founded in 2018 by Bogdan Vlad, a man who has found a profound sense of meaning and purpose in the art of perfumey. In his words: “For most of my life, I’ve been on a quest to find ways to express myself as fragrances have been a part of my life since I was around fourteen years old. While fragrances weren’t a major part of my life for many years, my love for them was something I always carried with me, no matter where I was. This was going to be my Testament to the world – everything I’ve seen, felt, and experienced; everything I’ve learned; all the poetry I’ve read and written; all of the books I love; all the cultural differences; and all the things I can’t say. This will be my Testament Collection.” (..) Each scent is designed to be a legacy, remembered long after the moment has passed, much like the stories and memories they are meant to evoke. This ethos is at the heart of our brand, where each fragrance is more than a scent – it’s an experience interwoven with emotional depth and cultural resonance. Our scents are a fusion of European sophistication and the mystique of Eastern traditions, designed to be worn by anyone, anywhere, regardless of the occasion. They are reminders of the shared human experience, crafted to transcend cultural boundaries and celebrate global heritage.”

Top Notes: Cardamom, Rose, Pepper; Heart Notes: Rose, Jasmine, Cypriol, Patchouly; Base Notes: Vetiver, Tonka Bean, Vanilla, Oud

  • A scent based on the celestial and the mysterious nature of the unknown, Quinta Essentia (“fifth essence”), as a fragrance an alchemical creation that is honed by Chris Maurice’s technical and creative sides. This fragrance is centered around a rose, that for Nicoleta, is the epidemy of what a great abstract yet true interpretation rose-oud combination should be. This rose is multilayered, airy, weightless, modern yet grounded; from an opening of spicy cardamom and pepper to florals of a dusty rose, a sensual jasmine, earthy patchouli and vetiver, to a tempered sweetness from vanilla and tonka that tames the scent without changing the depth and beauty of the overall composition–You are taken on a journey of the senses.

  • Quinta Essentia sounds like an olfactory masterpiece! The blend of rose and oud as a “fifth essence” – tying medieval alchemy to modern dark energy is genius. Chris Maurice’s ability to balance smoky depth with velvety rose (and that whisper of jasmine!) feels like a sensory labyrinth. Love how Nicoleta compared it to The Name of the Rose – now I’m picturing this scent as a wearable, mysterious journey. The fact that it’s meditative yet weightless (and that perfect sprayer detail!) has me hooked. Count me in for the giveaway – I need to experience this “timeless key” firsthand!

  • Overall, Nicoleta’s review sparks my interest by painting Quinta Essentia as not just a scent to wear but an aromatic voyage that engages with the wearer on multiple levels: philosophical, emotional, and sensory. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • Take me to the 5th dimension of rose. I love a fine atomizer as well, run across that once and awhile and it always catches my attention. Sounds like Bogdan really put his heart and soul into this. Love that AI mood photo, especially the maze. It’s been awhile since a rose scent has captured my attention. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. USA.

  • Rose is one of my favorite notes in perfumery. I liked that “this is a rose that feels like it was conjured from a recipe hidden in an ancient grimoire.” Thanks for the opportunity to sniff. MI USA

  • Top Notes: Cardamom, Rose, Pepper; Heart Notes: Rose, Jasmine, Cypriol, Patchouly; Base Notes: Vetiver, Tonka Bean, Vanilla, Oud A wonderful piece by Nicoleta really fascinated by the notes especially Cardamom and Spces with rose, Jasmine, vetiver and vanilla. The balance of all the notes and blending is absolutely finely balanced. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • i llike the references to alchemy and to Umberto Eco. the combination of scents are so vividly described, that i can almost smell it. this description speaks to me, so i would bw happy to get lucky in the draw. but i hope this will be in the nearer future than 2925 ….

  • A rose is a rose is a rose! If it’s a rose I’m also here for it!
Testament London Quinta Essentia is both a masterpiece of perfumery and a paradox—simultaneously a literal rose and an abstract construct.

  • I’ll be honest, these last years the combo oud-rose has been abused too many times, due to the spread of arabic perfumes, so at first I thought that this was another try to follow that trend.
But after reading Nicoleta’s review I think that there’s more than just that, I know she’s an expert and that she can distinguish the originality. I loved the comparison with the movie “the name of the rose”, and I’m actually curious about the “never overbearing” nature of the fragrance, even if it’s an extrait de parfum.
I hope to try this, thank you from Italy.

  • Quinta Essentia with rose and oud sounds wonderful. Created by a talented and experienced perfumer such as Chris Maurice. I am glad to learn about this brand Testament London. Beautiful review. I live in EU.

  • Nice review Nicoleta! I like to find a new perfume by Mr. Maurice aka Sr. Carbonnel. I believe, like Nicoleta, that it combines technical perfection, knowledge of the best raw materials and a very creative spirit. In Quinta Essentia he works with his beloved roses (equally loved by Nicoleta), both the literal rose and an abstract construct, and his beloved oud. As a lover of cardamom, I love the opening of the scent: this cold peppery spice that gives way to rose and jasmine. Oud and vanilla meet in the labyrinth created by Chris Maurice: I want to get lost in it. I didn’t know Testament London, so I congratulate Bogdan Vlad for creating a very wearable collection that mixes European sophistication and the mystique of Eastern traditions. I live in Spain, EU.

  • The emotional depth, sophistication and the mystique are beckoning me to this scent. I want to get lost within its labyrinth. Seattle

  • I love rose perfumes and the association with the movie Name of the Rose got me want to smell the perfume so bad. I can already imagine how it smells like and I know I’d love it.

  • I’ve realized lately that I love rose perfumes, and am very interested in continuing to explore the classic combination of rose and oud! The review’s focus on the metaphor of the labyrinth made it especially intriguing. I’m in the US.

  • Great fragrance, sounds great, the roses, cardamom and vanilla, sounds like celestial weightlessness, it’s unique, captivating, elegant and alluring, i would love to smell it

A very captivated review dear Nicoleta! This sounds very intriguing! As a huge fan of roses, this particular sentence caught my attention: Meditative and grounded, this is a rose that feels like it was conjured from a recipe hidden in an ancient grimoire, yet it’s airy and futuristic enough to feel almost weightless. So beautiful! In my imagination, there is an airy sensual rose in an aromatic labyrinth, which is calling to explore its multidimensional secrets.
I have never experienced a rose perfume with a cardamom opening! The juice of a dusty red rose combined with facets of jasmine, a mysterious combo of earthy patchouli & vetiver, sweetened from vanilla and tonka sound to me a magical vivid journey that would awake my senses.
It’s like the fragrance tells a story, and now I’m dying to experience this “poetic” rose myself!

  • Fantastic review, Nicoleta! I’m always eager to discover new fragrances by the brilliant Maurice, also known as Sr. Carbonnel. Like you, I admire how he masterfully blends technical precision, the finest raw materials, and an incredibly creative vision. In Quinta Essentia, he once again showcases his deep love for roses—both in their natural form and as an abstract concept—alongside his signature oud. As a devoted fan of cardamom, I find the opening especially captivating. Its cool, peppery spiciness smoothly transitions into the rich floral embrace of rose and jasmine. The interplay of oud and vanilla creates an intricate, almost hypnotic labyrinth crafted by Chris Maurice—one I’d gladly lose myself in. I wasn’t familiar with Testament London before, but I must commend Bogdan Vlad for curating such a refined and wearable collection that seamlessly marries European sophistication with the enigmatic allure of Eastern traditions. Greetings from NY!

  • What sold me on wanting to experience Quinta Essentia was when Nicoleta described it as being “conjured from a recipe hidden in an ancient grimoire, yet it’s airy and futuristic enough to feel almost weightless,” which is an intriguing contrast/balance. I live in the US.

  • I loved the depiction of this fragrance as a labyrinth – in the end, aren’t all perfumes just that? A long, mazing walk that one never knows where it will take them, with turns, surprises, ends and beginnings at the most unexpected moments.
Quinta Essentia sounds beautiful, with its central rose as the queen of the labyrinth, surrounded by pepper, cardamom, patchouli, jasmine and oud as companions along the journey through this luscious fragrant maze.

  • Eris.can.swatch.kaos says:

I love Nicoleta’s poetry here in describing this fragrance. Learning about the origins of quintessence is a bonus. This perfume must exude a mysterious vibe with a familiar ethereal quality. Love. Rose listed both in the top and mid make me want to differentiate the two and pick apart this perfume, but in a fun way. I live in Oregon.

  • Really interesting read Nicoleta. I too appreciate rose scents in all their glorious iterations. An interpretative slightly abstract rose-oud combination sounds fascinating. The cardamom-pepper opening leading into a red rose and finishing with the sweetness of vanilla and tonka on a base of oud sounds lovely. I adore the Quinta Essentia play on quintessence. MD, USA.

  • Rose and Oud; a match made in heaven. I’d love to experience what Chris Maurice has done with them for Quinta Essentia Extrait de Parfum. It sounds divine from your review. I’m in USA

  • wallygator88 says:

Thanks for the lovely review. It opens with an unusual blend of black pepper and saffron, which together create a surprising warmth with a subtle spiciness to lift the introduction. There is a fascinatingly layered mid, a heart with rose that combines with resins of styrax and benzoin, creating this beautiful floral-resin contrast. The resins bring a balsamy sweetness that rounds the floral and the spices to great effect, as well as combining to form more complexity overall and creating an almost mystical feeling to it. The drydown becomes warmer and deeper with an intriguing blend of smooth sandalwood and smoky vetiver which add a touch of darkness, whilst also creating the feeling of depth which all contribute to the overall atmosphere of the perfume. The journey from the initial spice to the deeper, smoky elements is well structured and brings forth an exciting and dynamic atmosphere. This creates the overall impression of something refined and complex, yet truly memorable.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • As someone who also struggles with sensory overwhelm, Nicoleta’s review was incredibly relatable. I’m a perfume fanatic, local musician and a closed caption editor…and I’m neurodivergent. My whole world is a balance of delighting in and/or making a living from sensory input. Any strong scents, loud sounds or music, or a TV droning on in the background and my focus on conversation with a loved one or an important task is completely gone. I have a similar experience when driving as well!
I find the wood grain texture of the cap to be especially eye-catching, and the detail of the quality of its sprayer sounds delightful for an all-over misting experience! While there is no “wrong” time to wear rose, with Valentine’s Day coming up, it is an especially romantic time of year perfect for a scent such as this. As the lucky winner of endearingly offbeat Loudo a few years ago, I really enjoy Chris Maurice’s unique interpretations of oud and would be thrilled to add Quinta Essentia to my collection. Thanks for the incredibly generous draw! USA

  • I’m with you on rose fragrances. I can never tire of rose because she is so complex. Divine, nuanced, complete yet exciting and just…. Gorgeous! I trust you that this fragrance brings out her best! Plus I always love a bit of cardamon. I am located in U.S.

  • Ramses Perez says:

This is a rose forward scent through and through. Of course once Chris Maurice comes into the picture he gives it its touch and turns it into something magical. A perfect mix between European traditions and some eastern touches, it takes you on a journey across continents. Nicoleta mentioned this fragrance caught her by surprise one day and that’s what inspired her to write about it. If I ever get that kind of reaction with a scent, it must really be an otherworldly creation. I’m located in the US

  • Svetlanafrance says:

Nicoleta’s evocative review of Testament London’s Quinta Essentia has truly captivated my senses. Her description of the fragrance as “a rose that feels like it was conjured from a recipe hidden in an ancient grimoire, yet it’s airy and futuristic enough to feel almost weightless” resonates deeply with me. The harmonious blend of cardamom, rose, and pepper in the top notes, leading into a heart of jasmine, cypriol, and patchouli, and settling into a base of vetiver, tonka bean, vanilla, and oud, promises a scent journey that is both timeless and innovative. As someone who appreciates fragrances that transcend eras and cultures, I am eager to experience this olfactory masterpiece. Thank you for the opportunity to participate in this draw. I live in France.

  • Beautiful review and pictures. I very love rose scents. I have roses in my garden too. And rose perfumes are really fabulous. Thank you for the chance. I live in Europe.

  • I must say that I’m thoroughly impressed by the sparkling Nicoleta’s review, which has amazingly conveyed her love for rose.
Being a rose enthusiast myself, I’m absolutely curious to try out Quinta Essentia. I love the idea behind the brand: a testament of the founder’s passions, experiences and ideas.

  • Well you had me initially with Quinta Essentia, and then BAM! Nicolette throws in a reference to The Name of the Rose to help illustrate the journey of this fragrance. One of my favorite films from eh hem, a FEW years ago, it really helps punctuate how this one feels. That and incorporating the darkness of the unknown which comprises us all makes this sound quite interesting. I’m a fan of rose in fragrances, and very curious to experience this one for myself. Cheers from Ohio, USA! 🙂

  • I’ve been looking to add a dark Gothic oud rose fragrance and a Chris Maurice fragrance to my collection and this fits both of those nicely would love to smell this one. I’m in the USA.

This review is fantastic! I loved the intro into the meaning of quintessence! I also love your description of the labrynth and can completely understand how that would relate to fragrance. I love Chris Maurice’s work and he has composed some of my favorite fragrances, including my favorite rose which is Kemi Jabir. This one sounds just as stunning. Thanks for the review. From the US.

  • I don’t believe I’ve tried any of Chris’s fragrances, but Testament London Quinta Essentia is intriguing as a form-defining take on rose and oud. Nicoleta’s comment caught my attention: “Testament London Quinta Essentia is both a literal rose and an abstract.” The way Quinta Essentia reads as layers of rose while also being airy is quite the trick and it sounds easy to wear for such a rich combination of notes.

    I’m in the USA.

  • Wow! Great review. I love it when a review makes me learn something – I had no idea about the origins of the word “quintessence” and now it’s going to be on my mind. I also love roses in all their forms, and trying this one would be a real treat. I’m in the USA.

Nicoleta’s review allowed us a glimpse into her working environment with all of its idiosyncrasies. She also shared her fondness for the artistry of Chris Maurice. Then we were able to read about the ethos of Bogdan Vlad and his perfume house. And, of course, we got a beautiful review of Quinta Essentia Extract de Parfum. I love that the fragrance is both a literal rose and an abstract construct. I enjoy imagining how the notes like jasmine, cardamom, and oud can create such a construct.
    I live in the USA.

  • Never tried anything from Testament, but I do love the works of Chris Maurice that he has done in the past for other houses, so I have big hopes for this one that is going to be another hit for me.
    Thank you! EU

  • I’m like you when it comes to roses. I like them in any form. This one seems mystical enough to warrant the parallels to Umberto Eco and medieval alchemy.

  • Quinta Essentia Extrait de Parfum seems like a fragrance that could be incredibly special. The name alone evokes a sense of something refined and essential, as if it distills the very essence of luxury. From what I’ve read, it appears to be a complex and multi-layered scent with notes that blend rich florals, spices, and perhaps a hint of warmth from woods and resins. It sounds like the kind of perfume that’s both elegant and intriguing, something that might reveal different facets as it settles into the skin. Greece EU

  • My love for rose has never been awakened by Nicoleta’s review. The vision of the rose labyrinth with all the powerful notes and the beastly oud trapped within has made it clear that I will definitely LOVE this scent. I’m in California, USA and I’m looking forward to own a bottle of this quintessential glory.

  • I recently discoveree my love for rose fragrances. Almost every fragrance with rose in it was beautiful. The rose and oud combo can never go wrong. I would love to see this house’s take on rose oud. Usa.

  • Wow! Just wow… I love Nicoletta’s reviews! This one was special to me because I am a florist and adore the true beautiful scent of a rose! The cardamom and black pepper sounds so interesting and i am always mesmerized by Tonka and especially oud. I would feel like the luckiest girl in the world to recieve this amazing scent! I’m in Colorado USA

  • This sounds like a wonderful rose perfume, incorporating more notes to support and highlight the rose itself, with oud always there. I do not have many rose scents, but favorite does have some rose in it. I would love to try this alchemical scent. Thank you for the lovely review ands generous draw. I’m in the us

The references to physics and dark energy are so intriguing, and the addition of patchouli in the hear and tonka in the base, along with the oud and other notes, sounds like a masterful blend.
