When it comes to the seasonal solar extremes I prefer the Winter version of the Solstice to that of the Summer. There is something about The Long Night which makes me feel contemplative. . It is always good to have something to ground you and allow you to be able to turn your thoughts inward. My tool this year came from the aptly named Soivohle Solstice by Liz Zorn.
Maria-Candida Gentile was one of the perfumers I wanted to meet at Pitti Fragranze 2011 in Florence. I had never smelt her perfumes, just read some great reviews by others. So when we met, I began to smell all the perfumes first, and was really surprised that the perfumer was there too!
As the end of the year arrives it is time to look back over all that the last twelve months have produced and list the best of the year. In 2011, I tested 471 new releases and reviewed 207 of them. Even those numbers didn’t allow me to test half of the new releases for the year. The fast and furious nature of these releases makes it difficult for anyone to truly have a handle on everything that came out in any given year. That being said out of those new fragrances I did try there were some pretty amazing releases.
