The Big Easy has been the seat of worldly pleasures for a long, long time. We know that the founders of Bourbon French Perfumery think so. But their Vetivert is smokin’… in the very best of ways. It’s feels jazz-age hot, but it’s as cool as the blues.
It had never occurred to me that M. Duchaufour worked with a central duality with which he then adds in the rest. His fragrances like L’Artisan Parfumeur Timbuktu always seemed like olfactory travelogues capturing a place. In the two latest releases by M. Duchaufour, Penhaligon’s Sartorial and L’Artisan Parfumeur Traversee du Bosphore, it is very clear what the central duality at play is and both of these are good examples of M. Duchaufour’s duality design aesthetic.
Certainly one of the most successful examples of this kind of artistry are the first two fragrances in Hermes “Un Jardin” series; Un Jardin en Mediterranee and Un Jardin sur Le Nil. For both of those fragrances the perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena spent time in the Meditteranean and near The Nile and let his nose become the way we would experience his impressions of those locales. I am reminded of this by perfumer Shelley Waddington and her Carmel By The Sea Series for her Envoyage Perfumes label
