AFireWithin is the latest addition to the StrangeLove collection, with Firmenich Principal perfumer Hamid Merati-Kashani continuing on the brand’s journey into oud. AFireWithin sits beautifully alongside the five previous releases composed by Christophe Laudamiel, showcasing exquisite materials and luxurious ouds at its heart. Elizabeth Gaynes, the founder of StrangeLove and co-founder of GaiaOne, is at the forefront of transforming how raw materials are sourced for fragrances. In collaboration with Givaudan, GaiaOne are developing a 600-acre plantation in Borneo focused on cultivating organic crops for essential oils. These initiatives aim to foster sustainable and transparent practices that protect the region’s delicate ecosystem, while distilling stunning materials. When Elizabeth speaks about these materials, her profound love and respect for their origins, production and producers shines through. This same passion is evident in StrangeLove’s perfumes, which possess a depth and richness that sets them apart, beautifully highlighting oud in unique ways. Wearing StrangeLove fragrances is an event, they feel special, even when challenging you get this amazing experience for the duration of the wear. AFireWithin is no different and it’s a beautiful ride through a dark wild smoky opening, to a contemplative dry down.

AFireWithin opens with a surge of thoughts and concepts breaking through a rich, dark oud haze, creating a sensation of absorbing a wealth of new information. The interplay of deep and vibrant notes weave together, while wisps of smoke ascends, giving life to these fresh ideas. Crunchy apple with an herbal slightly sour juice feels deliciously real, giving a fresh counter point to the darker woodiness and charred smoke. Imagine the rich aroma of dark wood smoke mixing with refreshing, fruity breeze as it all these elements simmer. Shimmering pink pepper embers dance softly in the air around you as you sit and ponder this new combination. That beautiful confusion of being challenged by new and different ways, I’m always excited for new experiences and for learning new things, AFireWithin had me wide eyed with its intense opening, it feels exciting with new fresh ideas bubbling and popping from the dark smoke. Chamomile and cypress bring an herbal green richness to this smoke, bridging the smoky oud and apple. Soft floral facets pick out almost fruity fig like aromas with a dash of honey which all seems to be intensifying the ouds natural facets. Spices seem to stew the apple tuning it into a golden sweetness with subtle rosy aromas softening the edges, as these ideas take form.

The oud gives a beautiful density to StrangeLove AFireWithin, its smoky and bitable letting those fresher notes pull you up as the darker ones return you to earth. The smoke texture also changes here, almost fizzing with spiced embers. It’s feels somewhere between that silk and velvet smooth sensation with just a hint of sensual tactility, a subliminal purr of oud giving a bodily spiced warmth. All these new ideas and elements are coming together as the new ideas and understandings form, you feel the smoke again turn slowly lighter in shade, closer to incense. Through these smoky thoughts a wild spiced rose bloom, its pulls you back into the middle while wrapping you in its soft velvet petals and smoky haze of thoughts and dreams. Vanilla picks up of the silky velvety carrot iris sensation, adding body and a lush richness to this herbal woody oud smoke.

The smoky woody powdery vanilla dry down StrangeLove AFireWithin leaves you with is delicious, it feels like new fully formed thoughts to meditate on, refined after all the bubbling exciting ideas of the opening and middle section. Vanilla stars here, but this is far from an obvious gourmand. Fresh pops of greens and florals shimmer with a delicate spice up top, with cedar wood giving a density to the iris powdery feel from earlier. AFireWithin feels softer still with a carrot dry texture that’s crushed into a gentle woody powder, these a softness that hard to articulate, close to caressing a warm body through delicate cool silk. Apple’s freshness haunts this perfume it’s a ghostly freshness along with cypress and chamomile herbaceous feel and a just a whisper of wax keeps you aware of nature. Chamomile’s calming feeling emphasizes the rather meditative incense feel of this satisfying final thought, again leaning into its herbal feel, reconnecting us with nature as the velvety soft smoke drifts over your skin. Oud here brings in time, its depth and age woodiness paired with vanilla’s creamy woods give you this very satisfied sensation. It gives the vanilla a rich thickness, with some darker smoky balsamic facets, pushing  StrangeLove AFireWithin into a smoky powdery woods, with a creamy iris vanilla and oud amber feel. The usual combination of the notes, mirrors our own complex and unique understanding of how the world is and our ways of being in and as we grow. Just like the perfumes journey, some ideas are shed or merge, while others get expanded upon as we grow and age, like the time needed for oud to form, becoming our own unique self’s. Ludwig Wittgenstein wrote, “a simple thought can last a thousand years,AFireWithin is more than a simple thought and one I’d like a lifetime to enjoy and contemplate.

Notes: Vanilla, Incense, Cedarwood, Cypress, Chamomile, Oud.

  • J’s review really captures the depth and journey of AFireWithin—I love how he describes the interplay of smoky oud with crisp apple and shimmering spices. The way he talks about scent as a thought process evolving over time is such a cool perspective. I haven’t tried AFireWithin yet, but I’ve worn Dead of Night before, and that one had a similarly rich, meditative oud presence. StrangeLove always seems to create fragrances that feel like an experience rather than just a scent. Now I’m even more curious to try this one!

  • This sounds so good, I’ve been wanting to try this brand since I became aware of them a year ago but have yet to experience their fragrances. Dark smoky oud with vanilla is absolutely my vibe. This is now at the top of the list of scents I want to try from Strangelove. I would be thrilled to win this one. I’m in the USA.

  • I’ve never tried a Strangelove perfume, but I’ve been so interested because the reviews always make them sound so complex. Sounds as if this one goes through a lot of changes with many layers – the complexity sounds wonderful! I would love to try. I’m in the USA.

  • AFireWithin by StrangeLove sounds beautiful and smoky with oud, apple, chamomile. Nice review. I live in EU and this brand is hard to find here – I have never tried it yet.

*”I’m always intrigued by new oud compositions (real oud, that is). It’s one of the most mysterious and challenging ingredients. I think it poses a challenge for perfumers. The review was fascinating and reassured

Oud- the real, resinous kind – never ceases to pull me into its labyrinth of smoke and secrets. Such a fickle muse for perfumers, isn’t it? That review? A relief! No sugar-coated crowd-pleaser (gourmands, I’m side-eyeing you). Fall into Stars? A celestial love affair. Now, Stranglove’s mystery drop… consider my curiosity fully piqued.

  • I never tried anything from Strangelove, neither from Hamid Merati-Kashani so I am quite curious about A Fire Within, more so when it comes to the notes which are not many, but together they create a complex blend that can be kind of unique. Thank you! EU

  • I always like hearing about companies making sustainable ingredients such as GaiaOne. Strangelove has great quality, so something must be working! I wonder if that is where they source the oud in Dead of Night (my favorite from the brand.) I can’t wait to try the new scent.

  • The composition of the fragrance, with notes like frankincense, patchouli, and sandalwood alongside oud, is described in a way that suggests a harmonious and rich blend. J’s mention of the “sophisticated” and “intriguing” balance of notes gives insight into how the perfume develops on the skin over time. I have never tried any Strangelove perfumes before. I live in Trzebnica, Poland.

  • I liked the description of a “dark wild smoky opening.” As a gardener the chamomile and cypress notes appeal to me also. Thanks for another wonderful review and draw. MI USA

  • The smoky meditative vibe that J describes is so descriptive I can imagine wearing this fragrance on my own skin. The combination of notes is different than any other fragrance I have tried. I have not sampled a Strangelove fragrance before.

  • J’s review of StrangeLove AFireWithin is quite captivating and makes me a little sad that I’ve not yet tried any of the other beauties from StrangeLove that I have on my list. I’d be stoked to get my nose on AFireWithin. I’m in USA

  • I appreciate how tactile this review is. AFIREWITHIN sounds like a smooth floral oud, soothing and calming.

  • Strangelove is incredible. I recently smelled through the collection and they really blew my socks off. They are the real deal. This release I’m sure is no different. They use Oud with such reverence. I love to hear about the initiative to plant crops for essential oils as well. What a fascinating brand. Hope to smell this one soon as well. Please enter me into your drawing! I’m in the USA.

Strangelove is such a luxurious brand. I have smelled them all and like fallintostars. This one sounds bright and crisp with the apple notes. I’d love to win and live in Indiana.

A beautiful description by J really intrigued by the Oud giving this a density and a wild spiced rose blooming has definitely got my attention. I am afraid I don’t have any experience with this house but I am intrigued nonetheless. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • As always, Strangelove has accustomed us to excellence. Amazing notes, the olfactive profile seems absolutly outstanding.
    Looking forward to smelling it.

  • What triggered my interest the most is the fact that the apple note seems to linger throughout the evolution, in spite of the denser and typically more prominent ones, like oud, vanilla and smoke. I also find chamomile to be an unusual touch to a perfume of this kind.
Never tried a strangelove perfume before.

  • Nice! Reading your review, I find myself craving for an outstanding oud, smooky and woody fragrance. AFireWithin I think can scratch that itch successfully. Thanks!

  • Nice review Mr. J. The StrangeLove rich and deep oud journey has many roads and detours. Recently Mr. Laudamiel handed over the wheel to Mr. Merati-Kashani. This time he gives us a dark smoky texture opening to finish in a contemplative dry down thanks to a powdery and creamy vanilla not in the gourmand anyway. Swriling incense, cedarwood, crisp cypress and serene and calming chamomile (note that I love) are part of this wonderful fragrance that grows and grows and lasts on our skin. I like from the same collection eternal the Fall into Stars. I live in Spain, EU.

  • What first struck me was the dedication to using sustainable, quality raw materials for the perfume oil. That makes me very excited for the quality of the oud within. I like how the oud is contrasted with crispy apple and soothing chamomile.

  • Strangelove AFireWithin sounds superb with chamomile and vanilla and all the oud.

I have samples of meltmyheart, deadofnight and lostinflowers
So precious I use them for special occasions only.

I haven’t tried any Strangelove perfumes but AFireWithin sounds fascinating! What stands out to me is the way J describes the fragrance’s rich and complex layers. The mix of smoky oud, freshness of a fruity breeze of apple note and the richness of green notes of herbal notes such as Chamomile sound so amazing and so unique to me. It has definitely put my curiosity and my imagination on fire. Thanks for the chance.

  • I live in the US. I’ve never tried a StrangeLove perfume before, but after reading this description and Gayne’s work to improve sustainability, I definitely have to sample some. J’s review transported me with its imagery, particularly the description of the opening notes which J describes as “fresh ideas bubbling and popping” from dark smoke and notes that seem to solidify from the smoke as the perfume wears. It read like a creational myth.

  • I am quite intrigued by this creation. Anything with oud captures my attention and this is not an exception. Usa.

  • I’m excited to see companies collaborate with their suppliers who are specifically cultivating organic crops for their perfumes. I have not tried this company but it’s hard to go wrong with smokey vanilla. I will have to get some samples now that I know about their sources. Seattle

  • I was fascinated by J’s description of the scent journey one experiences when wearing AFireWithin. I was tantalized by the blend of wildly divergent notes of smoke, fruit, pepper and vanilla, among others. It sounds like a truly unique fragrance. I have had the opportunity to sniff lostInFlowers and I found it simply beautiful. I’m in the US.

  • What an odyssey J describes! Afirewithin sounds like a rollercoaster with multiple fragrant stops – none missable. Oud and apple – such intriguing bedfellows. Smoke, vanilla, and one the most comforting notes, chamomile, dancing with big boy cypress, incense and cedarwood. That’s one heck of a Sunday afternoon, nose to notes. I’m a self-appointed brand ambassador for strangelove’s meltmyheart, and I’d LOVE to try this new member of a very beautiful family. I live in NY.

  • AFireWithin sounds like an interesting smoky oud scent with softness provided by a powdery vanilla and a fresh pop of apple and chamomile. It seems elegant and perfect for any season or gender. I really appreciate Elizabeth Gaines and GaiaOne’s commitment to sustainability and transparency in their cultivation of organic materials for distillation. MD, USA.

  • I have all but one of the StrangeLove’s releases so I am not surprised how popular this giveaway is! They truly make lush magic. I’m excited to see what they do with oud and I’m a little surprised by the notes, not sure why? I didn’t foresee a vanilla forward oud but I’m sure I will adore it. I am located in the U.S.

  • Honestly, it feels like you just went on some epic journey, starting from chaos and ending in peace.
Hopefully, one day I’ll get the opportunity to try it and experience this olfactory adventure firsthand.

That J’s review made this one sound so oud forward and heavy really intrigues me as the only other Strangelove I’ve tried, Lostinflowers, was so light on it, just providing a bit of a woody backbone to the beautiful florals. This one sounds intriguing. I’m in the US.

  • It’s so good to hear about GaiaOne’s dedication to sustainable organic crops for perfumery, especially agarwood! J’s review paints a beautiful picture of AFireWithin. I love the complexity that can arise from letting high quality natural materials speak clearly. AFireWithin sounds so unique – a smokiness that weaves in and out of herbal greenness, vanilla, spices, and florals! I would love to try this gorgeous perfume!
    Best wishes from the US!

  • AFireWithin sounds like quite an experience. The smokiness and fresh apple opening sounds very interesting. I love chamomile, so it’s nice to see it included in AaFireWithin. I am especially intrigued by J’s comment about how the “vanilla picks up the silky velvety carrot iris sensation”.

Thank you for your wonderful review, J. Also, thank you to Strangelove for the generous giveaway! My favorite Strangelove fragrances are Lost in Flowers and Melt My Heart. I am located in the USA.

It’s wonderful to read about GaiaOne’s plan tp build a sustainable farm in Borneo, to grow crops for essential oils.
I enjoyed J’s review of AFireWithin very much. It was interesting to read about the fresh ideas that are encountered with this new fragrance from Strangelove. The dark smoky opening with the crunchy apple note, moving into herbal green and then soft floral notes and then onto the dsark oud definitely sounds like a new approach. The powdery vanilla dry down also sounds delicious and newly-formed.
I have tried Fall Into Stars from Strangelove. It is very sensual.

  • I haven’t tried anyu StrangeLove fragrances yet, but it’s interesting to see how Hamid is continuing Chris’s take on the StrangeLove oud. The apple-smoke accord at the heart of AFireWithin is unexpected and I’m intrigued by the way the fresh herbal notes interact with the oud.The drydown sounds warmly comforting. Great review!

  • Melinda Gaddy says:

A dark, smoky, warm, and spicy scent sounds exactly like the kind of fragrance I’d absolutely love! Sounds like such a great combination of accords.

Thanks for the great review J

Afirewithin offers a strikingly contrasting oud fragrance experience. The opening provides bright spice which almost tingles on the skin before moving quickly into it’s deeper, heavier heart notes. This unexpected pairing balances lightness with depth, with a truly gorgeous and luxurious Oud at it’s heart. Oud appears fairly early but balances itself quite nice alongside these pepper elements in a very beautiful and complex fashion, rather than just taking full command immediately. The rose provides this softness while at the same time, not making it seem overtly flowery as other scents might aim, so it truly balances perfectly together in every single aspect of the experience. As it dries down, the base notes come forth which combines elements to create and project and overall complex perfume. There is amber, with musky undertones at play and these come together to build a smooth feeling fragrance. The fragrance doesn’t shout and commands space within it’s usage, and commands the feeling to be truly memorable which only really complex experiences can often deliver and in doing so really create it’s beauty which it aims to achieve with it’s scent.

    I’ve tried a meltmyheart before.

    Cheers from WI, USA
