In the increasingly crowded landscape of indie houses, everyone’s looking for their unique angle. For Chris Martin and Statik Olfactive, the pitch is both compelling and straightforward: hand-filled bottles, small batches, sustainably sourced ingredients, and perfumers treated as collaborators rather than ‘’hired guns’’. It’s checking all the right boxes for today’s conscious consumer, and the perfumes are fun, innovative and with enough tongue-in-cheek flair that makes people stop and… sniff.

I got intrigued by the inspiration for Statik Olfactive, ‘’the lesser-known figures of classic Americana… the dancing burlesque women of the Wild West saloons’’ and from reading the notes (besides the fact that IF it has rose in it – I WILL have to smell it) – as it quotes having lipstick, vintage rose, and an accord of… unwashed garter belts. Add to that the fact that it’s made by Darren Alan, whose subversive work I know and love from our 15th anniversary Lipstick Queen x CafleureBon, then count me in!

And the first time I smelled it, I gasped, oh my, oh my, this is the perfect scent for the TV show I’m planning to re-watch this August! If you’ve never watched Westworld, let me paint you a quick synopsis: imagine a theme park where wealthy guests pay obscene amounts to live out their wildest Western fantasies – shootouts, saloon girls, heroic quests, or brutal rampages – all with hyper-realistic androids who don’t know they’re not human. The catch? These androids start to remember everything, even if they’re programmed to forget. As the lines between reality and games begin to blur, the park’s illusion unravels into a compelling metaphor for what it truly means to be sentient.

Now meet my crush from the TV series – Clementine Pennyfeather (played by the angelic Angela Sarafyan) –scandalously beautiful, and, at first, tragically unaware that her entire existence is a script written by someone else. She’s the quintessential saloon girl, all honeyed smiles and practiced seduction, performing her role with clockwork precision night after night – but here’s what makes her fascinating: beneath that programmed sweetness lies something else entirely, and when her narrative loop breaks, when the façade cracks, you get a glimpse of the sheer force underneath. As a fun side note – I used to wear Portrait of a Lady by Frédéric Malle back in 2016, when the show premiered – a completely different kind of energy brought on by a rose, and a completely different type of “lady” as inspiration. But it’s a fun loop in time – almost ten years later, and here I am again, wearing a rose that could not be more different and rewatching one of my favorite TV series.

Statik Olfactive Scarlett Lady opens up all sweetness and well-tempered charm. The bergamot adds a sparkling freshness that feels almost innocent, while the dusty, powdery vintage rose and rose de mai create a lush, romantic backdrop. The tuberose brings that intoxicating white floral intensity, and then there’s marshmallow – because even the most sophisticated seductress needs a touch of innocence to complete the illusion. But here’s where Alan shows his flair: just when you think you’re settling into just another pretty floral composition, the middle notes arrive like a glitch in the matrix. That lipstick accord is pure genius – it’s waxy, cosmetic, and unmistakably vintage in the best possible way. It’s the scent of performance, of putting on a face in all the zoomed-in nuances and details – the powder, the lipstick, the dust backstage… The gin adds a boozy transparency that feels both celebratory and… numbing, while tobacco brings that smoky, lived-in, sinful darkness. The suede is where things get interesting – it’s not the pristine leather of luxury goods but something lived-in, touched by countless hands, like the gloves worn and shared between women who have stories to tell. The kind that makes you blush…

The base notes are where Statik Olfactive Scarlett Lady reveals her true nature. Sagebrush – that wild, untamed scent, dry, green, and herbaceous – slices through the haze, mixing with the creak of cedarwood floorboards under the soft footsteps, stirred dust rising in the air. And then there’s that “unwashed garter belt” accord – raw, intimate, unapologetically carnal. In less skilled hands, it might have veered into feral unwearable territory. But Alan handles it with tension, precision, and just enough restraint -there’s something illicit here, yes -but also tender and deeply human.

Statik Olfactive Scarlett Lady is what happens when a perfumer and creative director understand that the most interesting characters are the ones who refuse to stay in their assigned roles, and Alan in collaboration with Martin have created something that honors the fantasy while anchoring it in a bigger, more complex picture. This is a fragrance for people who like their beauty complicated, some roleplay in their seduction, and their roses served with a side of subversion.

Scarlett Lady is 20% Eau de Parfum Concentration

Top Notes: Bergamot, Vintage Rose, Rose de Mai, Tuberose, Marshmallow; Middle Notes: Suede, Lipstick (Iris), Gin, Tobacco; Base Notes: Greater Sagebrush (Tumbleweed), Cedarwood Plank Floor, Unwashed Garter Belts (Body Musk), Vintage Musk

  • “Dammit Janet.” You had me at Clementine Pennyfeather who is the most compelling character in Westworld. She starts off as a minor figure and then quietly becomes one of the most tragic, eerie, and resilient characters in the show. Her Lady Gaga cheekbones and nose caught my attention early on as this sweet and almost ethereal saloon host with a disarming kindness. You could see something going on below the surface and this Lady Gaga clone of an actress plays her with such understated nuance that every microexpression feels loaded with a backstory.

Sorry. What were we talking about? Oh. The Scarlett Lady’s scent profile. I’m in the US.

  • A Rose forward scent inspired by the dancers from Wild West saloons, that has hidden depth underneath its feminine charm. It shines with it lipstick accord that is vintage yet modern and in its base notes: A wild, dry and green Sagebrush brings an herbaceous element and an “unwashed garter belt accord” that is ” raw, intimate, unapologetically carnal”. Darren Alan crafts a scent that is nuanced, sultry, wild and untamed. Statik Olfactive’s Scarlett Lady stands out in indie crowd of perfumery–tantalizing, seditious and unique.

  • “Unwashed garter belts” is a hilariously bawdy way to nail the brief. The lipstick accord is also clever and makes this more than just another rose fragrance, and I like that Darren also captured the scent of the saloon, boozy and smoky. Scarlett Lady renders the scene in detail and then sets it in motion. Thanks for the giveaway—plan to try this brand soon.

lipstick, rose, tobacco, gin and marshmallow as some of the notes curious as to how this one smells
