“The view of earth from space is breathtaking, and it really shows our place in the universe. It’s up to us to take care of this beautiful planet.” – Nicole Stott, Space Shuttle Astronaut

The iconic Blue Marble photograph of Earth, taken in 1972 by the crew of Apollo 17, has become symbolic of earth’s fragility and the environmental activism focused on its protection. One such safeguarding project is the Gaia hypothesis, proposed by scientists James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis, which holds that Earth is one enormous ecosystem, comprised of many, smaller interlocking systems. Together, they represent a dynamic network that allows life on Earth to self-regulate and create optimum conditions for the advancement of life. Discoveries based on these theories are being used today to study climate change and to understand how susceptible our Earth is to the effects of human activity. Perfumer Diane St. Clair has been inspired by these environmental breakthroughs to find a new and exhilarating artistic bearing with her latest release, St. Clair Scents Blue Marble.

According to perfumer Diane St. Clair, “Blue Marble represents the beauty, complexity, and fragility of Earth’s intertwining systems throughs scent. Comprised of 7 accords representing oceans, soil, cold flowers, wet rocks, woods, green plants and metals, it allows us to think and experience the intersection of these endangered ecosystems personally, as they move across our skin, through time and space.”

The innovative structure of St. Clair Scents Blue Marble captures the feeling of viewing our majestic planet from space by opening with a cold aldehydic blast of bergamot cut with a metallic edge of Dihydromyrcenol®. Cooling clove adds to the supersonic chill from first sprays. We descent through the atmosphere to rediscover our home planet. Quick terpenic lifts are maintained throughout the fragrance as watery green notes begin to emerge with liquid geosmin. It is the smell of rain arriving through the heavy air as the earth wakes to receive the storm.

Sheer florals bloom in the heart of St. Clair Scents Blue Marble. Geranium lends an ozonic tone to the misty bouquet of elderflower, jasmine, and muguet. Here the wet rock accord adds its fossilized amber notes with slightly smoked aldehydes and ionic ambergris that floats an iodine nuance into our cloud of diaphanous florals.

Warmth from the floral heart begins to slowly rise off my skin about 3 hours after my first spray. Petitgrain, narcissus, and elderflower weave warmth like a silken thread through the ozonic mists of materials to the dry down. Beeswax brings a complex sweetness to the blend. Violet leaf and coumarin create a startlingly beautiful sweet green grass and hay moment. Javanol® adds a natural richness and grounding to the entire fragrance, reminding us that we are all anchored to this same precious earth we call home. St. Clair Scents Blue Marble is a perfume that makes us aware of the beauty and precarity that surrounds us. This is a fragrance that seeks to remind us, and reconnect us, with the priceless world just outside our doorstep.

Notes: bergamot, Dihydromyrcenol®, clove, elderflower, muguet, narcissus, jasmine, geranium, geosmin, fossilized amber oil, ambergris, petitgrain, violet leaf, beeswax, coumarin, Javanol®

I am a huge fan of Diane St. Clair and I am very intrigued by her new perfume as it reads like a pure passion product. I have been awaiting your review and am glad to see that some warmth comes to the fore three hours in. I have several of her creations including Casablanca and Gardener’s Glove. The artistry is evident throughout. And the longevity is notable. Blue Marble is a great name. I live in NY.

I remember listening to an interview with Diane Dt Clair – maybe it was with earlygreek, where she mentioned that she was working on this scent and gave a little insight into it.

I’m really excited about this scent and the way that is constructed. The use of bergamot and DHMC to create an atmospheric effect is just brilliant.

Diane St Claire’s scents (in particular Gardeners Glove and First Cut) are just scents that resonate with me and are brilliant.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • What a brilliant concept for a fragrance, and how challenging it must have been to consider what notes would reflect so many layers of matter and life and atmosphere! I don’t know what Javanol is, but I love the other notes, and from the article it sounds like it has been used well as a “grounding” base note. I would love to try this, but should I win, I would gift to my daughter, who is pursuing environmental science from a passionate love of the earth, and would particularly appreciate the premise of this fragrance! I live in NH, USA. Thank you for this generous draw!

  • Earth seen through a scent but first from above and then rapidly descending to all its glory down below! Would love to try this. In maryland.

I love the concept of interpreting the multiple intertwining facets of the earth as a scent. The structure of Blue Marble is particularly interesting because the opening is viewing the planet from space though aldehydes and morphs through the descent into green notes, florals, rain and mineral notes. I’m unfamiliar with the synthetics but they sound like they are well used in this fragrance. I’m in the US.

  • Sherin Thomas says:

I am impressed by the work and inspiration for this fragrance and am curious to se how the perfumer created it. I dont own any brand from this house love to get my nose on to it . From PA,USA

  • Very interesting idea for a fragrance. I like how the violet leaf and coumarin create a sweet grass and hay impression with beeswax to sweeten the scent. Really cool bottle and logo. Thank you for the draw! In the US.

  • Beautiful concept of interlocking ecosystems and experiencing the planet first from space then zoomed in to earth, from cold to warm, and realizing how complex our beautiful home is. Would love to try Blue Marble. CA, USA

  • Thank you Rachel for the wonderful review. It was especially striking for me reading it after witnessing the majesty of a solar eclipse. It’s wonderful that Diane St. Clair chose to remind us all of how fragile our system is. I would love to experience Blue Marble and then think of it from further out in space as the blue dot floating in darkness just like Carl Sagan said 🙂 I’m in TX USA

  • I always look forward to a new perfume from St. Clair—she’s one of my favorite perfumers. Blue Marble is a wonderful concept. I’m particularly intrigued by the way she captures the cold space of near-earth orbit through aldehydes and metallic sheen, especially layered over geosmin, green, and aquatic elements that complete the picture. More surprising is that she then zooms in on florals, ambergris, hay, and green grass. Impressive depth with this composition. Looking forward to trying it.

    I’m in the midwest, USA.

When I read Rachel’s review, I was reminded of a TV show I used to watch called “The Big Blue Marble.” I love the 7 accords that Diane St. Claire chose to represent the features of our beautiful Earth. The violet leaf and coumarin to suggest hay and sweet grass sounds especially intriguing.
    I live in the USA.
