Earlier this year Angela St. John of Solstice Scents released Orient Rose and concurrently re-launched a  gourmand/chypre from 2015 aptly named Edge Of The Night. If you’re familiar with Solstice Scents perfumes and oils, then you already know how quickly they sell out, often within hours of being released online. There’s a good reason for this, as Angela St. John’s perfumes, oils, body and bath products are artfully and masterfully blended and flat-out divine. If you’re new to Solstice Scents then I urge you to try Estate Carnation, Sea Of Grey, and Guardian (created for Cafleurebon’s Talisman Project) among so many wonderful others. Once you’re a fan you’re a fan for life.

Solstice Scents Orient Rose is a rose lover’s dream come true. As a charter member of the unofficial “Rose Ho’s Anonymous”, Solstice Scents Orient Rose went straight to my heart and like Cupid’s arrow, lodged there and has taken up residence.

Solstice Scents Orient Rose review

Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema The Roses of Heliogabalus, 1888 detail Tutt’Art@

It is everything I could hope for in a rose perfume, full of complexity, shadow and light; an olfactory “nose-gasm” (or rose-gasm) at every sniff. Opening with a wet and dewy rose, which quickly morphs into another aspect of rose this one spicy, then another rose as lush as a blowzy David Austin champion rose, the effect is one of a morning visit to a formal rose garden; moving amongst various varieties each with their own distinct rosy scent. There are spicy roses, aquatic-smelling roses, roses that have the aroma of rose jam or pink rose Macarons from the bakery. A surfeit of roses until you head is swimming with rose overload. According to Angela St. John,” Solstice Scents Orient Rose was supposed to be for Valentine’s Day 2019 and was so popular we sold out. It will be back in stock  by mid week (June 11th or so)”.

Solstice Scents Edge Of The Night:  If like me, you love gourmands, florals and vintage chypre-style perfumes, then Edge Of The Night demands to be in your collection. Sold out in its debut in 2015 and now un-vaulted and back in circulation, Edge Of The Night is a perfect study in contrasts. Outrageously sexy and dark, this is a gourmand chypre perfect for a night on the town ending with a night in bed but not alone.

Solstice Scents Edge of The Night review

Lady Of Shanghai Mirror Scene Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth apped by Michelyn

A true scented chameleon, Edge Of The Night wears quite differently depending on temperature. When I first tested it in March, the weather was still chilly, and Edge Of  The Night was a beautiful classic chypre, with the oakmoss, patchouli, and oudh taking center stage like true divas. Now with the warmer weather, it’s much more gourmand with the spices, amber, and musk in the forefront. The chypre vibe is still there, just dialed back. Regardless of the shifts and changes, the perfumes wears terrifically in any weather, and to anyone who might be “oudh-averse” fear not, forefront or background, the oudh is masterfully blended to support and ground the lighter notes, giving  Solstice Scents Edge Of The Night its very own edge over similar scents and making it that much better

Notes: Amber, oakmoss, patchouli, bergamot, black vanilla, red musk, buddha wood, clove EO, star anise EO, cinnamon, lavender absolute, oudh

Solstice Scents perfumes are available through their website

Disclosure: A million thanks to Angela St. John for the samples! The opinions are my own.

  • I am drawn to both perfumes, but more so to Edge of the Night for its vintage chypre quality. I would love to see how lavender works into this gourmand creation. As a collector I am happy to see smaller versions of both fragrances as giveaways. Thank you and I live in the USA.

Orient rose sounds like a wonderful floral fragrance, and Edge of The Night lures me in with the gourmand chypre approach. I’m in the USA.

  • I have not heard of this house so thank you for exposing me. The write up for the orient Rose was so beautiful. I don’t think I own a rose fragrance that is spiced. Sounds very alluring to a rose and an oriental lover. I would like to submit for the draw and either of the Orient Rose choices would be a delight. Again thanks for introducing me to this house.

  • Oh please, me, me! I love Roses! Angela’s scents are divine. I “discovered” her two years ago and am so impressed with her oils and perfumes as well as customer service. I’m in the USA.

I’m a big fan of Soltice Scents and love so many of them. Of these two, I guess I’d prefer Edge of Night, although that being said, it is almost impossible to choose between the two. Angela does florals like no one else. Thanks for this wonderful draw and review. I’m in the USA

  • I think the non-gourmand nature of Orient Rose appeals to me the most. I have a lovely, aromatic rose bush in my front yard and love me a good rose perfume. Having a “dirtier” one really appeals to me, since most focus on the sweeter qualities of rose.

Edge of the Night is the base of some of my favorite Solstice Scents perfumes, but somehow it didn’t really work for me on its own.

I’m in the US. Thanks so much!

  • I’m a rose ho fo sho. I’ve been waiting for you, Orient Rose, come to ME.

  • kellymoss says:

I’m wildly curious about Edge of Night as a lover of chypre. I like the dark, dusky, spicy, earthy ness of all the spice and oudh! Yes!
That silhouette graphic on the bottle sells it for me too— provocative!
I live and love in the USA.

  • I’m new to Indie perfume companies and have really wanted to try solstice scents. Rose is one of my favorite fragrances. Thank you!

  • laura_palmer says:

I’m a huge rose fan and Solstice Scent fan (Rose Mallow Cream is one of my absolute favorites), so I know Orient Rose will be right up my alley.

Edge of the Night is a little outside my usual choices, particularly because of the patch, but Angela is basically a scent magician, so I’m pretty interested in trying it.

  • Besides being a rose ho, I’m a ho for Solstice Scents in general! I’ve always wanted to try Edge Of the Night, and your review for Orient Rose was amazingly descriptive and I just wanna smell like all the roses. I’m in the US ❤️

  • what appeals to me most about these fragrances is their great note compositions. and the Edge of the Night just sounds absolutely divine. (Commenting from FL, USA)

  • Solstice Scents is one of my indie perfumeries and I really enjoy the quality they bring to many of their perfumes. Very recently I got into collecting ethically sourced pure oud distillations, and perfumes made from them and it’s been really fun comparing those to oud accords/synthetics. I don’t think I’ve tried Solstice Scents’ oud yet so that would be interesting, especially in something with a floral gourmand aspect since I feel like oud is typically just paired with rose and other florals as well as something more musky or leathery (although BPAL has a chestnut and pumpkin oud I think).

Orient Rose sounds lovely and classy, simply said! Whether I get extremely lucky or not, I will have to pickup both very soon (hopefully they don’t sell out too immediately!!)!

I really love collecting and using perfumes. When I was younger I never really enjoyed the commercial department store perfumes and I had assumed that I disliked all perfumes because of the stuff people often wore. Part of my (relatively) newfound fascination with perfumes is fueled by realizing how deeply enriching, intoxicating, and personal they can be, but another part is the community around them. So many wonderful people are engaged with the more indie/niche perfumeries. Thank you for these reviews!

  • I love deep Dark sexy perfumes and absolutely love rose too. I have heard so many good thing about this house and would be thrilled to finally try them!

Thank you four the chance I’m in the USA

  • love a clean floral scent. Love the fact that Solstice Scents is a natural product not full of nasty chemicals.

  • Susan Flister says:

The complexity and thoughtfulness of both scents sound truly amazing, I’d be lucky to get to sample them!

  • Both fragrances sound amazing. Orient Rose being a rose lovers dream. I do love rose fragrances when done right. Edge of the Night, Lavender in a gourmand wow. I am in USA, CA.

  • My Mom’s garden is full of various roses that she started from cuttings. Every one has its own unique fragrant scent. I would love to win, if lucky, Orient Rose EDP spray. I’m caregiving for her now, and would love for her to try it. USA

  • Dorian Fischer says:

So far I am not much into rose fragrances but i am definetely would like to. Edge of the night sounds so good to me since I love gourmandish fragrances. Great article and greetings from Austria

  • I purchased samples of both Edge of the Night and Orient Rose, and I love them both! Edge of the Night is a great witchy incense scent, which I adore since I’m drawn to less sweet/flowery scents. Orient Rose is a great blend of sweet and spicy floral, and made me realize that I actually really enjoy the scent of roses. Bonus: my husband (who doesn’t generally like scents at all) ACTUALLY LIKES Orient Rose quite a bit!

  • kaylarossi19 says:

Rose notes are some of my favorite! Orient Rose sounds wonderful and I’ve been anxiously waiting for it to restock since I saw their IG post on the 31st.
Also, I love this perfume house! Rose Mallow Creme and Conjure are two that I always love to wear. <3

  • I love natural fragrances. These are sounds very good. Thank you for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • Dubaiscents says:

Scents that are both in my favorite fragrance categories, rose and chypre! I love an oriental spicy rose with ambergris and the gourmand aspect of Edge of the Night makes it sound truly unique. I have not tried Solstice Scents but I would love to smell these both! I am in the US. Thanks for a lovely review Robert!

  • Solstice Scents seems to be uniquely styled to have many complex atmospheric scents that are still very wearable. Sometimes, despite an atmospheric smelling good, its hard to actually use, but SS seems to have overcome that hurdle. Her rose scents are also pretty popular! Edge of the Night has been on my radar for a while.

  • Solstice Scents works magic! All their fragrances suggest a certain spell- clear/sexy/sacred etc. Choose your weapon! Edge of Night is perfection for a quiet night with the one you love. Orient Rose must be fabulous but it sells out too fast. I’m in the USA

  • Rose, rose, rose and more rose! I love dark, spicy rose fragrances. Orient Rose sounds divine!!
    I live in the US

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Both sound great!!!!!…..but Solstice Scents Orient Rose is more impressive because of rose-gasm at every sniff, besides the fact that I love chypre fragrances more than rose/floral. Never ever tried Solstice Scents, this will be the very first in my collection if I win. Thanks for the generosity, count me in, please. Pakistan

  • aurora_ru says:

I enjoy vintage style chypres, which are actually contemporary and roses – who does not love roses!?? Both scents sound quite complex and made with talent and magic! I need to finally test out smth from this company!
Thank you so much for the generous draw!
Currently I am in Europe, but have a mail address in US, too.

  • Nearly everything I’ve tried from Solstice Scents has been a home run. Angela has a remarkable gift for perfumery, and her amber and vanilla notes are two of my absolute favorites and second to none. I would love to try these rose forward blends, as they aren’t in my regular wheelhouse and I’m sure they are just stunning! I live in the US.

  • doveskylark says:

I’m a big fan of dark and sexy fragrances, especially if they lead to boudoir adventures. That said, I LOVE Wilcox’s from Solstice Scents. It helps me recover from the debauchery.
    I live in the USA.

  • draignathair says:

Solstice Scents does such lovely rose fragrances with a wonderful variety, too! I was sorry to have missed out on the first round of Orient Rose and am delighted that she’s bringing it back this year. This house also has lovely layers to each scent and excellent gourmands with a twist, so Edge of the Night is another that has been on my list. I enjoyed Heart of the Night, and it made me curious about the underlying base of Edge of the Night. Thank you for your spotlight and reviews of these! I’m in the USA

  • I do have several different roses in my garden, mostly because I love their smelling colors. Miguel’s I am therefor also a member of the rose-ho‘s anonymous? 😉 and therefor I am very interested in these fragrances 🙂
