Solstice Scents Estate Cacao Review (Angela St.John) + Chocolate Lovers Dream Draw

Even though I love almost every kind of chocolate, I consider myself to be a bit of a chocolate snob. My preferred chocolate originates at elevations close to 2,500 feet above seas level, “up river” in the Ecuadorian provinces of Guayas, Esmeraldas, Manabí and El Oro.  Angela St. John’s new Solstice Scents Estate Cocoa is nothing short of a chocolate lovers delight, a perfume that captures the richness and complexity, the “fino de aroma” of the essence of the fruit of the Arriba Nacional Cacao, the prized native cacao plants of Ecuador.

With Solstice Scents Estate Cacao, Angela St. John creates a total cacao/chocolate experience. The earthy scent of the fresh cacao pods, the tangy vanilla of the white pulp, nutty floral and fruity notes of the raw and roasted fermented beans and the smooth, irresistible finished product are reflected in Estate Cacao – a perfume that will satisfy the nose of fragrance lovers and chocolate connoisseurs alike.

Solstice Scents Estate Cacao opens with a nutty, very slightly sweet take on dry cocoa powder. This initial delicious scent lingers on clothing for hours, but on skin quickly shifts to the creamy, vanilla custard-like elements of fresh cacao pulp.  One would think that such a mélange of flavors and textures would result in a strictly gourmand style perfume, but strangely enough, that is not the case.  I find Solstice Scents Estate Cacao to be an olfactory representation of the terroir and the process of chocolate production as well as an exquisite gourmand fragrance.  The perfumer manages this effect by weaving a suggestion, a silken thread of the sheerest patchouli through the entire life of the perfume, supporting the delicate fruity notes of raspberry and pomegranate while grounding and centering the gourmand in a smooth, rich earthy loam.

Like fine hand crafted estate chocolate, Solstice Scents Estate Cacao is a complex and ever changing blend of fruits, subtle florals and creamy, milky notes that carry and feature the dusty cocoa powder and fine vanilla for almost 24 hours on skin and for days on clothing.

Notes: Milk Chocolate, White Chocolate, Dark Chocolate, Raw Cacao, Estate Vanilla, Aged Patchouli, Pomegranate and Raspberry.

Disclaimer:  I would like to thank Angela St.John and Solstice Scents for the generous sample of the beautiful Estate Cacao.  My opinions are my own.

I would also like to thank my son Andrew Gross for sharing his great photos of the process of creating fine Ecuadorian artisanal chocolate.

  • This chocolaty gourmand sounds absolutely delicious. Loaded with various chocolates, enticed with vanilla and patchouli – wow! I’ve never tried anything from this house before but I’d love to try it. Thanks for the great review and the great giveaway! Commenting from Kentucky USA.

  • I love chocolate fragrances, and its interesting to me that the notes have both milk and dark chocolate! USA

  • Nice photo at the beginning – I never knew what a fresh cacao fruit looks like until now. Sounds like a fantastic chocolate and cacao experience with milky, vanilla aspects to it. Who doesn’t like chocolate anyway! Would love to give this a sniff. Thanks for the draw. Regards from the USA.

  • Shamrock1313 says:

Oh my, what a great review by Gail – milk chocolate, white chocolate, vanilla & raspberry sounds more like a delectable dessert than a fragrance and being a frag makes it sound so awesome.
    Pennsylvania USA

  • I am forever searching for the perfect cocoa scent and I like how this one seems to blend both production and edible elements of chocolate. I’d be thrilled to try it and what a generous giveaway! I am in the USA.

  • All of my favorite chocolate notes and raspberry too? On my wishlist it goes! I would love to taste that handmade chocolate. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! Mich USA

Whoa whoa whoa back the train up!!! This review had my mouth watering by the end. I was sucked in from the beginning and couldn’t resist reading through. Full disclosure: I am normally not a fan of most gourmand scents and am incredibly picky with finding one that works (have 2-3 out of a collection of 260 niche scents.) I was taken by surprise and captivated by the chocolate connoisseur’s process for creating fine chocolate and of course, the delectable description. Upon finishing this reply, I literally will begin searching my house for anything chocolate-y to satisfy my cravings! Bravo! Well done. I can only hope to win a bottle. This also makes me want to revisit gourmands. Niagara Falls NY (USA) and thank you for the draw … 🙂

  • I adore cacao fragrances, especially when approached in the traditional (indigenous) sense; seemingly ethically sourced, hand-ground in a metate, then roasted in natural earthen ware over a fragrant open fire of sacred Protium (copal) wood. I would be very grateful to experience the finished product after reading such a fine review. Thank you for the generosity, as well as the opportunity to participate!

  • Andy Gross says:

I also love the tastes and scents of chocolate. It doesn’t seem to matter if I am walking into a bakery or nibbling on Pacari Bar, chocolate based sensations are extremely pleasurable.
Thank you for shedding some light on Solstice Scents!

  • I think it’s really cool that this fragrance takes you through the process of making chocolate and the different phases and forms of the cacao. It also sounds like it has great ingredients to accentuate this for example raspberry, I love chocolate with raspberry in it. I havent tried any Solstice Scents yet. I live in the USA. Thanks so much for the generous draw.

  • Chocolate, patchouli and juicy red fruit sounds decadent. I’m really intrigued by the use of different forms of chocolate and wonder how that affects the blend. Never tried anything from Solstice scents before. I’m in MD USA

  • This sounds absolutely divine! I am a huge fan of Solstice Scents and love their Cocoa Absolute and Estate Cacao sounds even better!! Commenting from Michigan, USA.

  • Dubaiscents says:

I love a good chocolate scent but this one sounds so much more nuanced than standard milk chocolate. I love the photos used to illustrate the review too! I have never tried any scents from the Solstice Scents line. I would love to try this one. I’m in the US.

  • Camille Sheil says:

This is beautiful! How wonderful that there’s milk chocolate, dark chocolate AND white chocolate….and aged patchouli?! I am most piqued in a fragrance that has this much edibleness involved and yet is not entirely taken by the nose as a gourmond. Beautiful! Thanks for this opportunity of a giveaway! I live in New Hampshire, USA.

  • Intrigued by the notes Notes: Milk Chocolate, White Chocolate, Dark Chocolate, Raw Cacao, Estate Vanilla, Aged Patchouli, Pomegranate and Raspberry. This sounds like a chocolate lovers dream. Thanks from the United Kingdom

  • I am intrigued by the the different chocolate notes, aided by patchouli and fruit notes. Thanks a million from United Kingdom

  • I love chocolate! Solstice scents’s heart of the night and Blackburn’s parlor are what introduced me to chocolate perfume. USA

This sounds amazing, the whole cocoa package. A sheer patchouli is always a good note with cocoa. 24 hours on the skin is a plus. I’d love to try this. Nice photos. My favorite is Black Forest which also has chocolate. It’s my favorite dessert and the fragrance captures it beautifully. I ll have to see if it’s still available. USA.

When I read the review of Estate Cacao, pictures of the most delicious chocolate comes to my mind. It’s like an expedtion into the mysterious jungle, where the fruits joins in to complete this magical and ancient potion at higher and remote altitudes. The review and the fragrance fascinates me, so to get the chance of winning this is amazing. Very generous.
My favorite fragrance from SS is hard to tell, because I do love them all actually. They have all different and lovable personalities. But the ones that are rotating the most right now are, Snow Shoe Pass and Maine Moon. Love, love, love these

  • Just love the chocolate fragrance
Can’t go wrong with chocolate, everybody like it, I’m from Europe, if I win it I would give it to my girlfriend, she needs to smell like chocolate

  • RedPersimmon says:

I love cacao-patchouli fragrances. I also love fruity fragrances, so I’m not mad at the pomegranate and raspberry notes. I can’t wait to smell it! I have only tried Lavender Raspberry Truffle from Solstice Scents, but I’m saving up to buy Manor, as I hear that it’s amazing.

  • I would love to try more from Solstice Scents and this sounds delicious. From the review I like the sound of a real chocolate scent not an too sweet interpretation. I am in the U.K. and so far I have tried Victorian Picnic. Thank you

  • mandragora says:

Solstice Scents is one of my all-time favorite houses when it comes to perfume! Her perfumes are magical and I adore every one I have from Angela!
What intrigues me with this chocolate perfume is the fact that it’s not focused on the solemnly gourmand facet of cocoa but also the raw earthiness of cocoa beans. I’m sure it’s nothing but a master piece!

    I’m in Europe.

  • Oh nice chocolate, wonder what it would be like to smell like chocolate, don’t wear this when fasting… Living in the EU

  • explorisgirl says:

I’m really intrigued that this is a chocolate perfume (yum!) with notes of raspberry and pomegranate. It sounds unique and delicious. My favorite scent from Solstice Scents is Manor! I’m in the USA.

  • I’m so intrigued by Gail’s comment that it smells like the process of making chocolate. That sounds amazing!

I’m in the US. I have too many Solstice Scent favorites! Rose Mallow Cream is a classic that I wear a ton.

  • Joshteriyaki1 says:

Good review very descriptive can almost imagine it. ” ever changing blend of fruits, subtle florals and creamy, milky notes that carry and feature the dusty cocoa powder and fine vanilla for almost 24″ sounds amazing. From GA USA

  • Ooh thank you Gail!

Akro Dark is my most recent acquisition as I started hunting down perfumes with drier, non-sweet chocolate notes. I am desperately drawn by this review and the vanilla-custard cacao pulp description! The idea of milky, subtlly floral chocolate without it being cloying sounds absolutely brilliant and right up my alley. I would love to be registered for the sample draw! In Canada.

  • I’m interested to try a cacao based scent based on Gail’s review. I have Thierry Mugler’s Angel Muse which is supposed to have chocolate as a note (but I don’t smell it) so it would be nice to really experience cacao fully with Solstice Scents Estate Cacao. Thank you for the great review! Greetings from California, USA.

  • I almost want to drink Solstice Scents Estate Cacao after reading this review by Gail Gross, in the style of old-school drinkable Eau de Colognes. We once enjoyed the process, in a workshop in Caribbean, of making chocolate from scratch using cacao fruit and roasting the nibs, et cetera. A similar workshop on making gourmand fragrances would be even more interesting. Solstice Scents Estate Cacao sounds like a perfect gourmand fragrance with its notes of chocolates, cacao, pomegranate and raspberry. Patchouli will prevent my paws from taking the perfume to my mouth it seems. Would love to try Solstice Scents Estate Cacao as it sounds multi-dimensionally delectable. Please consider me for the 60 ML bottle as well as the sample. Appreciate your work. Writing from USA.

  • I ordered several Solstice samples recently and my favorites are Edge of the Night (which was already reviewed here) and Black Forest (meant to resemble the Black Forest Cake). It’s obvious that Angela knows what she’s doing when it comes to the chocolate. Black Forest is well blended that you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference between the scent and the real thing (it’s mostly sweet chocolate, dry coffee, and cherry). Blueberry Violet Truffle is another good chocolate scent so I could imagine Estate Cacao is on the level.

Gail is right on about the performance. Solstice makes a much-to-do about letting their scents settle as to get a proper impression. Not sure about projection, but I could still smell them (EDPs) more than 20 hours later. The oils were fleeting for me.

  • I Find it interesting that Solstice Scents Estate Cocoa is nothing short of a chocolate lovers delight, being a chocolate lover myself. Also a perfume that will satisfy the nose of fragrance lovers and chocolate connoisseurs alike: two in one combination.
    I live in USA.

  • NiceVULady says:

I’ve never had a chocolate fragrance, but this does sound marvelous. Thanks for the review and thanks for the draw. I’m in the USA

  • I’m a big fan of gourmand scents, and I’ve loved other gourmand scents from Solstice Scents like Sycamore Chai and Rose Mallow/Violet Mallow, but I’ve always wanted a signature fragrance with a bit more bite to it. Pairing the rich cocoa in this fragrance with patchouli sounds absolutely heavenly!

  • Bryant Worley says:

This is my first time hearing about Solstice Scents. This is what I enjoyed reading about the fragrance: “The earthy scent of the fresh cacao pods, the tangy vanilla of the white pulp, nutty floral and fruity notes of the raw and roasted fermented beans and the smooth, irresistible finished product”. Whenever I hear the word “smooth” describing a fragrance, its always happifying, as it means its well-blended and not overwhelming. I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • patrick_348 says:

I like the way that, as described, this review describes the scent as if it conflates time and space. The different stages of the process of production get included, as are the geography of the source chocolate and the different flavor facets of the finished product. Gail makes it sound anything but linear, which makes it sound exciting. I have never tried anything from Solstice Scents. I am in the US, in North Carolina.

  • I love Gails review as the description of this fragrance made my mouth water. I love chocolate so much. This scent sounds divinely delicious and to die for. Thanks for the draw. I adore chocolate. I live in CA, USA.

  • I have a few Solstice Scents fragrances and I just love the way she does chocolate. It smells so real and delicious have not tried Estate Cacao yet, but the description of the creaminess in the review makes it sound so tempting! I live in New York, USA.

  • I haven’t tried a chocolate scent with patchouli yet and I’m so curious about how the blend of the two together work, I can only imagine the patch making the cacao richer and more delicious. I also love how so much thought is put into making this a whole scent journey rather than a simple one note chocolate fragrance! Regards from WA, USA.

  • wildevoodoo says:

This sounds so much more appealing to me than a regular chocolate gourmand, which can be lovely, but this just sounds complex and delightfully satisfying. The earthiness of the patchouli, the vanilla-y pulp, and the fruity notes that sound similar to those you can taste in high quality dark chocolate all make this fragrance sound incredibly appealing to me. I’ve never tried a fragrance from Solstice Scents before! I am in the US 🙂

  • wallygator88 says:

This is a very interesting scent and it sounds from the review that it is a true representation of chocolate. This is why I love indie perfumers.

    Regards from WI, USA

  • peppermoon says:

Solstice Scents does amazing vanillas, gourmands and atmospherics, so I’m sure Estate Cacao will be an amazing cacao centered fragrance. The addition of the raspberry note also sounds good! My favorite scents from them at the moment are Manor, Foxcroft and Rose Mallow Cream 🙂
I live in the US and I’d like to enter for the bottle!

  • I love chocolate perfume and this one sounds the best because it lasts so long- I would love to win! I live in New York, USA.

  • JungleJuice says:

    Avid reader from the USA.

Fruity, floral & Milky chocolate concoction. It can’t get any more tempting to give a sniff.

  • irishgal108 says:

Great timing on this review, I have a bunch of samples from this house on the way right now. Estate Cacao is not one of them, although I did get the Estate Vanilla. Wish I had added the cacao after reading this review, darn it. Thank you for doing an amazing giveaway! I am in the US!

  • Tinah King says:

I think I’m going to have to order some. I love solstice scents’ chocolate anyway, and this description is just dreamy.

  • SJanet Gugel says:

I really love the idea of the fruits mingled with a tiny wisp of Patchouli in the Cacao scent! I’m so glad Angela created a Cacao EDP! My favorite Solstice Scents are Snowshoe Pass, Manor Fire and Black Forest! Black Forest is an amazing Chocolate scent, but very balanced with the woods. I think estate Cacao is going to be different in the sense that the fruits will bring a brightness to the chocolate.

Thank you for the amazing article, and for participating in a giveaway!
    I adore Angela’s scents!

  • bigscoundrel says:

I’m looking for a nice chocolate centered fragrance without being too sweet. I like the touch of the fruity notes. I haven’t tried a fragrance from Solstice Scents yet, so I hope I win. New Jersey, USA.

  • VerbenaLuvvr says:

I’m so glad Solstice Scents have incorporated cacao into their Estate series, and nice to see the house featured here. I have sampled many from this house and own Sun Warmed Honey (the best honey floral out there and my all-time favorite SS), Smokewood Apiary, Buttered Rum Mallow, Pumpkin Spice Latte, Sycamore Chai, Maplewood Inn, and Snowmint Mallow. Many other discontinued scents that I would purchase as well but difficult to find, many dedicated fans like me out there. Thank you Angela for your generosity! USA

  • Seems like the Estate Cacao creation replicates the subtle flavors and notes found in quality coffee beans, where terroir, climate and treatment heavily affect the flavor of the coffee we enjoy. Brilliant description by Gail and a brilliant creation. VA, USA.

  • salosaunders says:

I am so happy to see one of my favorite indie houses reviewed! Thank you to Angela for the luxurious draw. I am seething with desire to get my hands on Estate Cacao because I adore warm, refined, sumptuous gourmands. There is nothing quite like the scent of chocolate, and it sounds as though Angela has captured both its fruity and creamy aspects. Solstice Scents was the first indie house I fell in love with – if you haven’t already, do yourself a favor and visit their website. The descriptions are incredibly detailed and clearly come from years of expertise. My favorite gourmands from Solstice Scents are Gibbon’s Mischief Night, Foxcroft Fairgrounds, and Owl Creek Aleworks. Angela manages to create blends that are evocative, creative, and deeply delicious. Thanks again for the opportunity! I live in Tennessee.

  • Gail’s review was excellent and my favorite part was: “Solstice Scents Estate Cacao to be an olfactory representation of the terroir and the process of chocolate production as well as an exquisite gourmand fragrance. The perfumer manages this effect by weaving a suggestion, a silken thread of the sheerest patchouli through the entire life of the perfume, supporting the delicate fruity notes of raspberry and pomegranate while grounding and centering the gourmand in a smooth, rich earthy loam.” I love the combination of chocolate, fruit, and vanilla. This fragrance sounds amazing and has definitely intrigued this self proclaimed chocolate lover. Unfortunately, I have not tried anything from this brand before. Thanks for the giveaway and I live in the USA!

Solstice Scents Estate Cacao sounds amazing for the Cacao and gourmand lovers out there. A nice dusty cocoa powder that transitions into a vanilla and cacao pod combination mixing in with fruity pomgranate and raspberry with an earthy patchouli base. This sounds like heaven in a bottle. I am not familiar with Solstice Scents but Estate Cacao sounds like it would be my favorite. I am from the USA.
