Today is Black Friday and the madness began the day after Halloween as hundreds of e-blasts filled my inbox. Issues with store closings during Covid had certainly made it easier to say, “I am going to SHOP BIG and buy from Amazon, Walmart, Sephora and Target”, but life is opening up again and now more than ever small businesses need your support. Over the past eight years, we have a tradition to promote small, independent perfume boutiques on Small Business Saturday. The idea for our series We Love This Store  began with our support for small business owners as did one of our most read articles on this site, Running a Niche Perfume Store (which featured  the owners of eight small fragrance boutiques).

For Small Business Saturday, November 27, 2021, we are featuring Raffy Dolbakian,  the second-generation owner, perfumista and proprietor of Parfums Raffy located in Sherman Oaks. Parfums Raffy who works with his wife and on occasion his parents (who really miss interacting daily with clients) Truly a “Mom and Pop” small business. –Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief

 Parfums Raffy since 1988!!

Our love of fragrance began in 1988 when my parents Tony and Janet founded a small perfume store in Los Angeles. It was like a candy store for all who were fascinated by the enchanting world of scent. I was a teenager at the time and I actually looked forward to going to work every day! It was a thrilling experience each and every time we received new fragrances and the entire family worked diligently to establish our new passion. In time we had grown our small store to four stores across the Los Angeles area and a thriving website. Perfumery was infectious for me. I studied the art and expanded our offerings to include custom made fragrances and rare perfumes from around the world. We now operate out of one location and we find it is rewarding for us as well as our customers.

Inside Parfums Raffy

We offer a thorough fragrance journey and most of our customers are mesmerized by the experience. Thirty-three years of experience in the business has provided us with extensive knowledge and we love to share that with our customers. Unlike many perfumes stores we offer a wide variety of fragrances that include classic fragrances that have been around for a hundred years or more to new designer and the hottest niche brands entering the market. In our opinion we are in the golden age of perfumery and we are all lucky to be living through it!

As with all other small businesses the last year and a half has been challenging. Our brick-and-mortar doors were closed for four months in 2020 due to the pandemic. However, we were surprised to see virtually all of our customers returning once we reopened. We are grateful for all the support and plan to continue providing our customers with the experience so many have come to know”.

How inspiring to read about a mom and pop boutique that has survived multiple decades and an ongoing pandemic! Raffy, you are living my dream: sharing your knowledge and love of perfume with others. Having read through some of the brands you sell, I think it’s a testament to your desire to cover anyone looking for a fragrance, regardless of budget. I am used to shopping in stores that sell perfume secondary to makeup, I love the photo of your perfume cases, it’s so well-organized and pretty that it’s making me smile, and I imagine your customers in Sherman Oaks agree. After a recent department store visit with pushy salespeople, I wish we had a store like yours near us. Best wishes for your continued success.

Shopping small is more important than ever before, with the “big A” muscling out so many businesses (big or small) and not treating their employees well, either. I’d much rather buy from someone personally who I know will be responsive in case there are any problems or hopefully, if I plan to do business with them in the future. I think it is time that I put some money towards a Parfums de Marly for my nightstand. Yes, I plan to Shop Small tomorrow and support hard-working members of my community.

  • Amazing, it reminded me of my childhood days when i would sometimes visit this local perfume store in our town, with my mother. ( cant remember the name of the store ). I still have faint memories of all the different smells , the aura of that place was unmatched to any other place i have been to.
One should really support such small businesses / stores #shopsmall , as one is able to give back more to their community this way, the sales tax would be used for local development , and moreover there is always a personal touch.
I check out their online store and i am amazed by the variety of perfumes available.
I wish to buy Maison Francis Kurkdjian Aqua Universalis if i win.
    Greetings from NYC

  • Thankyou Raffy for the generosity and Team Cafleurebon for bringing out such gems from fragrance community.
Its true that , since these big MNC’s / brands have entered the market, a lot of small businesses have been at the receiving end, but i have personally always favored Buying from local stores for their smooth buying experience , hassle free exchange in case there is any faulty product and moreover Independent businesses are , where innovations happen , so definitely shopping tomorrow at a local store .
I am going to buy Amouage Reflection man , for my boyfriend’s birthday due next month.

  • I was in California last week , I would have definitely visited your store had i known about it back then. Nevertheless, on next trip maybe 🙂
I am an ardent supporter of buying from small businesses , because such businesses are the lifeline of every community . There is an organic bond which you form when you buy local.
I have my eyes on PDM oriana for a long time now, definitely will get the same . #shopsmall this saturday

  • I shop small for the usually much better customer service, should I be chosen I have no idea what I’d buy. Too many choices. Besides why get my hopes up? US

  • I shop from small businesses to support locals, they provide jobs to local community, and moreover every such business has a reason and story behind it just like Raffy , how is parents started the store in 1988. This makes it even more special for me.
Thanks for the small business Saturday initiative , i hope more and more people do it.
I would use my GC to buy some fragrance samples notably delina from parfums de marly.

If we want genuine variety and niche selections then shopping small businesses is the way to go, some scented lovelies will never be popular enough to be profitable.

I recently tried C for Women by Clive Christian and adored it, that would be the one I would select. Thanks for the generous offering and hope you’ve been having a terrific holiday weekend so far.

  • I’m glad to have discovered this company: they seem to have some products which I’ve been having difficulty finding elsewhere, and I hope to purchase many samples, and full bottles from them for different things. I “shop small” because some of those “smaller” businesses have better deals and certain things which I might not find elsewhere. If I win the gift card, then I might use it towards something from a designer house. I might put it towards a bottle of “Costume National Homme EDP”. Yesterday, on Fri. 11/26, I bought some fragrances from the company Source Adage (they might be considered a “small” business). I buy from other “small” businesses too. I live in MD., U.S.A. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

I love this article and the attention it brings to supporting small businesses! I try to shop small whenever I can because I love to support small entrepreneurs and the local community that supports us every day. Plus the service at small businesses is incomparably better than at big box stores! I definitely spent today “shopping small” online.

If I were to win, I would probably buy a couple of Amouage fragrances – most likely Amouage Lyric Woman or Memoir woman, or perhaps one of the travel sets. I live in the US.

  • I support small businesses/entrepreneurs as much as i am able to , for they contribution they make to the local community. The level of customer service which such small businesses provide is unmatched to these big companies. I always have had awesome experience with them. Today i had the chance to visit a local artifact shop , bought some for the Christmas decorations.

If i win, i am probably going to buy some Montale fragrances , like intense cafe, pure love.
    USA

My reason for buying from small businesses is that they not only create local jobs but also give back to the society buy buying locally available services as well.
I never had any issues with getting product exchanged when it comes to small shops unlike these big chains who made me run pillar to post for smallest of issues.
If i were to win the gift card i would use it to buy samples of Creed fragrances which i dont own as of now, namely royal oud, original vetiver and others ..

  • Bryant Worley says:

I “Shop Small” because small businesses are (in my humble opinion) the foundation of communities. Also, big businesses are okay, but a more ‘tight’ relationship is developed with a small business – – being from Brooklyn, NY, I had a lot of corner stores I liked shopping in because I had a ‘friendly’ relationship with the staff.

What I would spend my GC on, would be samples of:

    1) BOND NO 9 NEW YORK MUSK
    2) MAISON FRANCIS KURKDJIAN L’HOMME A LA ROSE
    3) PARFUMS DE MARLY PEGASUS EXCLUSIF
    4) BDK PAS CE SOIR
    5) MANCERA DEEP FOREST
    6) RAMON MONEGAL
    FLAMENCO
    7) XERJOFF MORE THAN WORDS

I live in Waldorf, Maryland, USA, and I didn’t do any Small Business shopping.

  • Having worked in small shops over 7 years now, i have this special attachment to such businesses . I remember we had so many customers who would visit us regularly , and the best part being all such places were relationship driven ( not just profit driven unlike a lot of big companies these days)

I do all my household shopping from local stores , and thanks for the generosity Raffy, i would love to buy some winter perfumes if i happen to be the winner.
My choice of perfume would be Tom ford orchid soleil.
    I live in NYC, US

  • What a nice shop! I hadn’t heard of it until this article. Nice to see a small shop surviving such a long time. I’m going straight away to their website to check out which brands they carry. I hope you had a profitable Shop Small Saturday. USA

  • fragtrail909 says:

Small businesses are the way forward when it comes to supporting local economy and over several years i made some really good friends who work at local stores in my town. Never had any complaints with service ….
i would use my GC to buy All the escentric molecules samples available on their website
    MA, USA

  • Shop small to support local businesses and culture, otherwise it all because homogenized and monoculture, devoid of richness that comes from thriving individuals and individual communities. Thanks to Parfums Raffy for this generous draw. If I win, I will probably use the gift card for Montale Bengal Oud or Montale Oudrising. From USA.

  • I try to support local businesses as much as possible. We have so many wonderful artisans in our area, it would be a shame not to! Unfortunately, we do not have a dedicated perfume store. Parfums Raffy sounds like a great place to get lost in for a few hours. If I were fortunate enough to win a GC, I would like to try my hand at blending my own fragrance. Thanks for the chance! I’m in MD, USA.

  • It’s always a good time to shop small but especially now with all that’s going on in the world today!! Thanks Cafleurebon for supporting small business & promoting some as well!! Help out your local small businesses people!! I’d buy something I don’t have probably something from Jo Malone. Everyone make sure you check Raffy out & support them as well… All so thanks for your generosity!! USA

Thanks Cafleurebon & Raffy for this draw… Good luck everyone!!

  • I shop small because Jeff Bezos has enough money, and to keep the little boutiques open. Parfums Raffy seems like just such a place. I didn’t get to do any local shopping on Saturday, as I was sick from the shingles vaccine. That one is a doozy. If I won the $50 gift certificate here, I think I’d buy Un Jardin Sur Le Nil by Hermes. It’s one I’ve wanted to try, and it’s on sale! I am in the US

  • Thebluelotus says:

I very often shop small because of the best value for money which i get, its not just about real time interaction with owners but also to be able to check the quality of stuff which i am about to buy, matters a lot to me. I have always found small stores to be more warm and welcoming .
If i were to win , i would order several samples from the house of parfums de marly .

  • Congratulations Raffy on keeping your business going during a four month lockdown! It takes a lot of dedication for a small business to survive without a closure so I imagine that you must have excellent customer service and a variety of fragrances that everyone wants to experience.

It’s true that small businesses run by people who are passionate about what they do are the BEST places to shop. I shop in our downtown marketplace with the local vendors for produce and unique handmade gifts on Saturdays. I look forward to looking at your website which is where I’m going right now. 🙂

I have never smelled a Xerjoff fragrance which I see you carry in your photo above, so I would probably put the gift certificate towards one of those fragrances.

Thanks for the giveaway and much success to you! In the USA.

  • Thank you for bringing us the story about this wonderful small business supporting perfumery. It is so great to read about a small Mom and Pop shop that is now being run by the second generation and has expanded to make their own fragrances.

I might end up with some Jacomo de Jacomo as that was the scent my father used to wear.

    Cheers from WI, USa

  • Really inspiring story and yes i do shop small as i am able to get better quality products and also a sense of contribution towards my local community by supporting these small businesses.
i #shopsmall every weekend / other days as and when i am able to.
If i am the winner i would like to order myself Amouage Reflection man from their store.
    Denver, CO

  • In my opinion, i shop from small businesses because that way i am able to help real people, whom i may know personally, or atleast have some form of interaction with. Moreover these small businesses are the bedrock of entrepreneurship in our society .
I checked out their website and they have some amazing collection of scents, i would love to try out a few samples from the house of Creed, MFK, Xerjoff.
    USA

  • I love stores like this one! It’s nice to be able to get a different experience from what you can find anywhere or everywhere else. I don’t necessarily think of all big chain stores as totally soulless, but, well… to say the least, small businesses keep the world interesting. If I won, I might go crazy buying a bunch of samples, to maximize my whiffage.
