“Perfume can be impactful, engage and challenge, pushing our emotional boundaries and forcing us to re-examine and possibly realign our thoughts, fears, and dreams“. –Robert Herrmann in his review of Bruno Fazzolari’s Unsettled

One year ago, October 1, 2019, Senior Editor Robert Herrmann passed away; his body died. I write body because his spirit is very much alive. Robert Herrmann brought light and love to his husband Ron Hall, his local community, to his family, to his many, many friends, and to the fragrance world.  I think of him daily since his passing. I remember his smile, our lengthy phone conversations, and his passion for life… and aldehydes.

Carnal Flower review Frederic malle

Since the Pandemic began, I sense his presence even more -especially when feeling overwhelmed or lonely. It’s as if he’s in my home wearing some of his favorite perfumes —  the tuberose and gardenia explosion of Frederic Malle’s Carnal Flower, the trail of Shelley Waddington’s Envoyage Nepenthe, and the aromas of sea and sand from Angela St. John of Solstice Scents Sea of Grey.

Aftelier Perfumes Secret garden review

Mandy Aftel’s Secret Garden was gifted to him by a dear friend and he cherished it; Robert also loved Diane St. Clair’s sunlit, earthy Gardener’s Glove.  Then there is Sultan Pasha’s Moonlit Reverie, the heady night blooming garden by the perfumer Robert dubbed the “Tzar of attars”, the warm synthetic skin scent of Amber Jobin of Aether Arts Android,  StrangeLove’s Lostinflowers with its lush oud and white florals the only fragrance he brought to Esxence 2018- (the last time I saw him).

Near my laptop is his “legacy perfume,” BIWA which he specifically chose Dawn Spencer Hurwitz of DSH Perfumes to create using a list of ingredients he emailed me, just days before he left this earth.

Scented Spirits Lili Bermuda CaFleureBon 2019 Perfumed Plume finalist 2019

official Perfumed Plume seal

I believe in spirits, as did Robert.  How fitting that his article Scented Spirits: Lili Bermuda Mary Celestia Perfume” – by Robert Herrmann, Sr. Editor was a 2019 Finalist for The Perfumed Plume Awards.

He called himself “The Fragrant Wanderer”;  he called me his “sister by another mother”. Robert was protective of how perfume people perceived his “EIC of CFB”, even when I pretended, I didn’t care. There have been times of late when I feel myself letting go of things simply because they have become too heavy… because I know he would want me to.

  • What a precious, soulful piece, dearest Michelyn.
DSH BIWA is what I’ll be wearing today, too, in Robert’s memory.
I so much wish I’d met him in person.
Love and strength to Ron, and all his loved ones.

Such a touching article, permeated with light sadness and grief! It is a pity that such a person passed away. But he continues to live as long as he is remembered and as long as his business lives!

  • Such a beautiful memorial for Robert. Thank you Michelyn. I feel Robert’s presence as we go through these difficult days – and wonder what he makes of it all.

  • Michelyn your words are poetry, I know Robert would be smiling right now. It’s an honor to have our lostinflowers included in his cherished scents. Today I will spray myself with it and think of him.

Such a beautifully written piece! Robert is looking down on us glad he is not dealing with any of this mess in 2020. He is surely missed in the fragrance community but always fragrantly remembered! Thank you, Michelyn, for sharing with us!

I knew Robert through his articles, that I have discovered after his passing away. His joy for life, passion, and beautiful spirit come out of his writing.
I can’t imagine the loss and grief all his loved ones must feel.
Nothing is lost, as long as we remember. Beautiful article.

  • I remember many a beautiful and skilled review by wonderful Sir Herrmann.
Though the bodily departure was early, his life was surely full, bright and purposeful. Rest in peace.

  • I have a sample of BIWA waiting for me when I get home to the States. Robert was one of those rare souls that you could sense his goodness and sweetness from his written work. Thanks for a beautiful tribute, Michelyn.

  • The Plum Girl says:

Thank you for this wonderful tribute.
His smile…is what I’ll always remember.
    Hugs.

  • He was such a nice guy! When I got to meet him during Esxence and of course the countless times we spoke via FB Messenger. Such a nice person. He definitely is missed.

  • I have no words… only feelings on this day. I loved Robert and although we *almost met* in real life on numerous occasions, it was as if we’d been friends in life for years.
I’m still so honored that Robert chose me to create his legacy fragrance, his dream fragrance. He was a wonderful man, and an incredible part of the fragrance community. We all still miss him so. <3
