Scents of Man is the only perfumery on the picturesque Isle of Man, a self-governing British Crown Dependency in the Irish Sea, between Great Britain and Ireland. A passionate team runs this boutique business with expertise in perfumery, herbalism, formulation and medicine. Founded by perfumer Andrea Byrne in 2014, the brand launched its perfume line in 2015. Scents of Man’s focus is on crafting perfumes and skincare products that they themselves want in the world, using only the highest quality ingredients and innovative, research-driven techniques. They cultivate and distill their own botanicals whenever possible, while sourcing others from trusted suppliers of premium oils, resins, and eco-conscious chemists. Each ingredient is meticulously selected for its excellence and effectiveness, all while upholding a commitment to cruelty-free beauty. There’s currently 20 perfumes in the line, I felt a distinct signature and style present in the 7 perfumes I got to sample, having smelled the beautiful fruit accords, like in the beautiful Godred, I can assume the more floral centric perfumes are equally as stunning.

A symphony of woody scents unfold on your skin as Scents of Man Ancient Forest comes to life. Fresh green aromatic notes intertwine with delicate berries and blossoms, while the sharper, damp essence of pine mingles with airy violets, evoking the vastness of a serene woodland. This lush landscape is further enhanced by a gentle, powdery heliotrope that spreads its velvety touch throughout the forest. Scents of Man Ancient Forest has a unique woody fougère character, brimming with opulent aromas of verdant greens and cedar, where the cypress exudes a soft, powdery sensation, like a floral snow dusted over the cypress fronds like silk. Echoes of traditional Italian fougères linger in this fragrance, as creamy basil imparts a soapy, fresh green aroma, seamlessly blending with the deeper, sweeter notes of tobacco and blackberry. This delightful sweetness is enveloped in the crisp embrace of musky fir and pinewoods.

Scents of Man Ancient Forest has this edge of Europe Forest feel to it too, it’s a different kind of forest from the ones I know from Scandinavia and Germany, this feels like home to me, out in the forests around Dublin and Wicklow. A gentle breeze carries the subtle fragrances of gorse and lightly sweet heathers, harmonising beautifully with the aromatic greens scents I’ve only experienced on the islands at the edge of Europe. The ground feels delightfully soft, as if walking on damp earth and moss, with twigs and pine needles cushioning each step, while the soft embrace of cypress branches adds a comforting touch. The clever inclusion of violet and myrrh introduces a hint of intense sweetness, suggesting the presence of nearby wildlife.

At the middles stage of Ancient Forest, there’s a lovely transformation as the vibrant greens of the pines shift into a warm musk, while powdery woods take on a smoky feel, enriched by resinous notes that deepen the atmosphere. Despite these transitions, Ancient Forest retains an elegant translucency, creating a sense of spaciousness within the woodland.

Ancient Forest By Scents of Man

Ancient Forest’s dry down is a rather beautiful smooth green floral, cassisesq with its sharper edges rounded out with a soft sandalwood and vanilla. The forest feels lighter now, there’s a soft clean aldehydic musky breeze giving a clean facet to the air Soft pines and fir trees linger at the periphery, intertwining with the cassis, whose roots guide you toward subtle animalic undertones, just whispers for those that get deeply intimate with you. This green cassisesq sharpness and oud, this subtle addition adds a beautiful realness to this Scents of Man Ancient Forest, those subtle dark notes conjure the wildness that lurks behind the bushes and trees, whose traces are found on slick mosses that coat the forests floor where mushrooms grow in scattered clumps amongst the flora and fauna that live there.

  • I know we don’t do this anyone but this sounds like it skews male in the best possible way. But whenever I see “pine needles” as a note, I think of my beloved Niki de Saint Phalle, my wishing scent. Why I didn’t save that adorable snake bottle baffles me. J describes this as an “Ancient Forest filled with magic.” Lovely. I live in NY.

  • I love heliotrope and the idea of deep in the pine forest. This sounds like something great! I can see myself in the forest in the picture. I wonder how the hemlock forest of ny state compares to the forest of Man or other places with the same temperatures.

  • The fragrances combine a variety of notes, from the freshness of bergamot and juniper berry to the depth of tobacco and oak. These blends create a rich, multi-layered scent profile of each fragrance. I live in Trzebnica, Poland, EU.

  • I don’t but for me for this notes is green like I said I don’t know that’s why I want to tried

  • Wow, Ancient Forest sounds like an immersive adventure where every aspect of the forest is represented on this olfactory journey. Sounds like a perfect fragrance for the fall. This is a new house for me and I am very intrigued by their distilling their own botanicals and commitment to cruelty free ingredients. I live just outside Chicago, IL USA.

  • I live in the Pacific NW part of the US and our forests are probably similar to the Germanic ones mentioned. The concept of a forest of Isle of Man identity ( I didnt’ even know there was a perfume company there; Isle of Man is on my Want To Visit list), sounds like a vacation through history I never had. I would love to visit this! I almost backed out at the powdery woods mention but then the blackberry and aromatic notes brought me back. I am interested!

  • J’s review is so realistic, it seems walking in the forest smelling a new clean and clear note at each step. Woody, aromatic but well balanced with sweet notes, that makes it interesting to me

A beautiful description of pine needles and Christmas just makes this a bit special. I am loving the notes especially tobacco, moss, oak and cedar. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • Thanks for the lovely review J.

It was really nice to read about this fragrance. The Scents of Man Ancient Forest opens with a fresh, earthy blend of green notes like pine, moss, and fern. As it develops, warm wood accords of cedar and sandalwood emerge, adding depth and richness. A subtle floral undertone, perhaps jasmine or violet, lends a softening touch. The overall impression is one of being immersed in an ancient, untouched forest – damp soil, sunlit glades, and centuries-old trees. The longevity and sillage are both impressive, making this an excellent cold-weather fragrance. Ancient Forest captures the magic and mystery of the natural world in a sophisticated, well-crafted scent.

  • AromaDulce73 says:

When J says this fragrance is “A symphony of woody scents” I was hooked. She continues to say how the heart is piney which is cool because I don’t have anything really piney in my collection. Smokey woods really closed the deal for me. This is definitely something I would like to get my nose on.

  • I’m always intrigued by a forest scent, and this one especially, with J’s lovely description. Another reason to visit the Isle of Man, thank you for the lovely samples and the review. In the us

  • I haven’t tried any Scents of Man perfumes, but I always appreciate when a brand creates their own materials. Scents of Man Ancient Forest sounds like a great introduction to the brand. The combination of cedar and a fougère structure reminds me of a wet shaving product I really enjoy, but the additions of tobacco and blackberry are compelling, as is the overall powdery texture. I’m most intrigued by J’s comments on the “Europe Forest feel”; I love a fragrance with a sense of locale and a regional voice. Would love to try it and these other samples.

  • Oh I just love a great forest fragrance!! And I love violets too. This ancient forest sounds impeccable! Totally my jam. I’d love to try their florals and chypres disco set too. This is a house that was not on my radar but it certainly is now! I’ve actually visited the islands so I can’t wait to try their offerings.

  • A wonderful dreamy scent of wood this must be. Where I live it is common and customary for people to chop the trees once they think they served a short purpose, or to use for wood. A parallel universe. That makes me think of the trees, how strange they are, and of their connection with the world. There isn’t enough fougere out there so I’m looking forward to smelling some. I live in the EU.
