From Gail’s collection of paper ephemera. Christmas in the Woods… Artist Henry Clayton Hopkins 1917. Sarah Horowitz Parfums Perfumer’s Palette makes a great holiday gift
This is the season that keeps the crafty and creative among us busy from dawn till dusk. Cookies, home made soaps and candles, jewelry and crafts of all kinds find their way to hopefully appreciative friends and relatives. A few years ago, after the holiday rush was over and the tree sap was rising, I even went so far as to tap my own big leaf maples, collect gallons of maple water, reduce that to maple syrup (a 40:1ratio – sap to syrup) and finally bottle my hard earned, sweet elixir into tiny maple leaf shaped bottles. The recipients loved these gifts but the work involved made me think twice before attempting another such labor-intensive project. For those of us who would like to create personalized gifts but don’t have the time or energy for long involved do-it-yourself marathons, Sarah Horowitz Parfums Perfumer’s Palette makes it possible and easy for us, inventive perfumistas that we are, to compose unique fragrances for ourselves and our loved ones.

The official return of Sarah Horowitz Parfums Perfumer’s Palette, originally launched at Nordstrom in 2002, offers a thoughtful and streamlined solution to hands on amateur fragrance creation. The Perfumer’s Palette collection of twelve specifically designed, eco and wallet friendly accords empower the wearer to experiment making uniquely personal scents. Each of the versatile top, middle and base notes is a balanced perfume in itself, masterfully created by Sarah Horowitz-Thran, to be layered together or worn alone, for the upcoming mid-winter festivities or any time of year.

There is no doubt that playing with scent and creating our own fragrances, either from essential oils and raw materials or from perfumers’ accords, has become extremely popular over the past few years, both as individual pursuits and as group activities. An industry insider recently told me that one of the most popular online searches having to do with fragrance include the words “how to make your own perfume”. Of course we admire and respect the work of esteemed, skilled and highly educated professional perfumers, but our respect shouldn’t put a damper on our own curiosity. Rather, that respect should inspire us and give us an even better appreciation of the perfumer’s art! Sarah Horowitz Parfums Perfumer’s Palette provides the tools – the ingredients really – to satisfy that curiosity and, in the process, perhaps even make our fragrant dreams come true. All we need, in addition to the palette, are our own sensitive noses and olfactory imaginations; the possible layers and combinations are almost endless. Carefully crafted, the twelve “notes” of Sarah Horowitz Parfums Perfumer’s Palette, like the twelve notes of a chromatic musical scale, provide all the color and tone we need to compose beautiful olfactory melodies. Sarah Horowitz Parfums Perfumer’s Palette is a joy to work with, each accord a balanced individual perfume that can easily be worn and enjoyed on its own.
