For what is your friend that you should seek him with hours to kill?
Seek him always with hours to live.
For it is his to fill your need but not your emptiness.
And in the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures.
For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed.
~ On Friendship, from The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran

Sarah’s dear friend Rima Freeman

True friendship is not all that different from true love: one can be struck by its thunderbolt at first glance, even as you observe an individual from across the room. It’s that potent – and it is capable of infiltrating your being before you are conscious of it. In artisanal perfumer Sarah Horowitz Thran’s most recent fragrant release, Sarah Horowitz Parfums Journeys 4/Rima  – originally a bespoke for her dear friend of longstanding, Rima Freeman – we are privileged to bask in the radiant glow of an everlasting friendship which transcends the years. Sarah fondly refers to Journeys 4/Rima as a “Love Letter in Patchouli” – and that affection is apparent from the very first spritz. So is the patchouli, which is the nexus of this eau de parfum – because Rima’s late mother, who passed in 2020 adored patchouli-forward fragrances. Rima had approached Sarah to create a perfume which would help her celebrate and preserve those precious olfactory memories of her mother Edie. Journeys 4/Rima is a work born of love and friendship – a fragrant collaboration and ‘creative scent visualization journey’, as Rima describes it. Sarah, in turn, refers to Rima as “the purest artist I know, a woman who cannot help but speak the truth, and who equally abhors dishonesty – the ever-present Goddess that she is – Rima.” Such is love which neither time nor distance can alter.

Sarah Horowitz -Thran of Sarah Horowitz Parfums

In 2016 I wrote extensively about Sarah Horowitz-Thran and her odyssey from Long Island to Boston and eventually to California – where she became as much a California girl as one might imagine. In the 1980s Sarah was attending Emerson College, where she majored in performance art with a minor in philosophy and religious studies. This matters because Sarah has always possessed a spiritual bent – and this proclivity which has informed all of her creative work continues to this day. I cite our lengthy interview for illumination purposes: “Sarah viewed her minors [philosophy and religion] as an extremely useful adjunct to her perfumery: it enabled her “to ask perfect strangers intimate questions. What did they believe?” This was a touchstone for personalized perfumery, later to be created straight out of a wooden toolbox. “It’s the process of creating through conversation, meditation, and experimentation”, our perfumer avows. “A Fragrance Journey.”

Sarah Horowitz Parfums Journeys 4/Rima is devotedly composed of a large proportion of beautiful natural materials, each of which contributes to the overall tapestry of the fragrance itself. They are employed in the service of “beauty, strength, and timeless bonds of friendship”, as Rima affirms. 4/Rima achieves two particular objectives: it provides a powerful personal link between perfumer and muse while preserving a continuity with the body of Sarah’s compositions. As I see it, Sarah Horowitz Thrans’ fragrances are notable for their affectionate wearability, combining creativity with comfort. Whenever I smell one of her perfumes, I recognize her signature: they are frequently musky, ambery, vanilla-embroidered – accompanied by luscious sandalwoods (creamy, not spiky) and often encompassing a lovely jasmine (or other white flowers, such as gardenia and tuberose). Sarah is equally fond of rose- and carnation-focused scents, but they are not required here; rose is intended as a participating member of the bouquet, not the star. After all, Rima and her mother are the focus, and this perfume is their bespoke, according to their desires. 4/Rima is a marvelous mélange of gourmand and mysterious elements: a symphonic amalgam of profoundly shadowy labdanum and patchouli, augmented by multihued ambers, resins, Sarah’s beloved vanilla, and choice florals, sprinkled with the aromatic fairy dust of blood orange, bergamot and saffron. 4/Rima is a complex fragrance possessed of stellar longevity and depth – on clothing it lasts indefinitely; on skin, for at least 12 hours, minimum. Rima is supremely soothing and in keeping with Sarah’s Taurean aesthetic (each time I experience one of Sarah’s perfumes, I smile to myself and remark upon what a Taurus she is: creative, beauty-loving, practical, family-oriented and so Venusian!). In addition to honoring a lasting dedication to one another’s friendship, 4/Rima is a perfect example why Sarah Horowitz Thran’s’ fragrances retain such global appeal. A fascinating fragrance which languishes upon the shelf seems a waste; why not do as Sarah does, and create universal loveliness that you can’t wait to wear? This would make a perfect gift for someone you cherish.

Sarah Horowitz Thrans’ fragrances are notable for their affectionate wearability, combining creativity with comfort. I don’t own any of here fragrances but love to try this one. I am from PA, USA

  • What a beautiful muse. My own mother was not a patchouli fan per se, but she had her favorite perfumes and notes, which still make me catch my breath when I smell them, the image and recollection of her is so strong. Love this idea. In maryland,

  • If I could create a bespoke perfume, it would smell of spring rain and daffodils. I liked that 4/Rima is composed of a large proportion of natural materials. If lucky, this would be my first fragrance from Sarah. Thanks for the opportunity. Michigan USA

Ida always seems to find a way to spark my interest in fragrance with poetic and in-depth reviews. This one is no different. While I have yet had the privilege to experience a Sarah Horowitz creation, this article had captured my undivided attention. As this being a “Love Letter In Patchouli” I am strongly drawn to this fragrance, as a patchouli lover. The notes in the supporting cast along with the outstanding performance, has me eagerly awaiting to experience this creation.

Obviously the most interesting part of the review is the heartwarming story of love and honoring those we’ve lost. Hope this doesn’t hurt my chances but I’ve never heard of the line till now. I don’t have a very creative side so imagining a fragrance is not easy for me but it would amazing to create a scent for a friend that evokes a seeming lost memory. Recently I received a carded sample with an order and when I put it to my nose I was transported back in time. Wasn’t sure at first what memory it was revealing but then it came to me, my stepmom from sometime in the 90’s. That little vial is now a treasured possession.

  • I haven’t tried any of Sarah Horowitz-Thran’s creations yet, but I keep reading great things about them on here so I suppose I should gab some samples soon. This one has such a touching story behind it, and I am happy that Horowitz-Thran was able to put all the best elements of her friendship with Freeman into a fragrance. If I was to make a scent based on the relationship between my best friend and I, it would likely be a rich black tea with a touch of spice and leather. Best of luck to all. I live in NC, USA.

  • Such a wonderful article about the fabulous work of Sarah Horowitz! I started to read because i wanted to read about the friendship but then was completely grabbed by the “love letter in Patchouli”! Of many Horowitz scents, my favorite is Pride & Carnation. The pictures are beautiful in this article, too. Thank you for the opportunity, in the US.

Friends are truly one of the most powerful forces in our lives. This fragrance, marrying the tastes of two, sounds like an incredible symphony of a perfume. I’ve never smelled a sarah horowitz perfume. I’d make something spicy for my friend. US.

Ida’s review of Sarah Horowitz Parfums Journeys 4/Rima truly touched my heart and sparked my interest. The description of the fragrance as a “Love Letter in Patchouli,” dedicated to the everlasting friendship between Sarah and Rima, is incredibly moving. It’s inspiring to see how perfume can serve as a tangible expression of love and friendship, preserving precious memories and emotions.

What I love most most is the emphasis on the personal connection between the perfumer and the muse, as well as Sarah’s dedication to crafting fragrances that combine creativity with comfort. The blend of natural materials and the intricate composition of 4/Rima evoke a sense of timeless beauty and strength, reflecting the enduring bond between friends.

  • I love complex, ambery fragrances so the way that Ida reviewed Joureys 4/Rima sounds amazing to me. I’d love the chance to try it! I haven’t had the opportunity to try anything from Sarah Horwitz but I’m excited to. If I made a bespoke fragrance for a friend it would probably smell a lot like I imagine this one smells – a beautiful warm and cozy ambery floral. I’m in MN, USA.

What I love about the description of this perfume is the fact that she fondly referred to it as a love letter, in patchouli, and how it was a reference to Rima’s late mother. I love that fragrance can mean so many things, and truly is such an individual exploration and each fragrance! If I was so lucky to be the winner of this would be my first fragrance, but I know I would love it:)

If I were to create a bespoke perfume, mine would be a warm, comforting vanilla with gourmand-rich notes. Baking is something I truly love and I do for all of my best friends, so giving them something to remember me by would be a scent from something I love doing for them.

  • I love how affectionately friendship is portrayed in this. And the fragrance sounds so down to earth and deep, like the friendship. I absolutely love Sarah’s Love Light is Within perfume. I spray it on the darkest of days and it lights me up from within with its buoyant photorealistic honeysuckle. If I was to make a bespoke fragrance for my friend, it would smell rich, warm, complex, vanilla forward and slightly spiritual. From Portland, OR.

  • What a lovely gesture to honor a dear friend by composing and dedicating a bespoke fragrance for her beloved mother. I’m also a patchouli lover and Sarah’s combining it with resins, amber, vanilla and multiple florals makes for an exceptionally complex fragrance. Have not tried any of her scents yet. I’m in the US.

  • I love how the fragrance is meant to epitomize and celebrate a dear friend with notes that sound bold yet comforting. I haven’t tried any Sarah Horowitz perfumes yet. If I were to make a fragrance for a friend, it would include damask rose, sandalwood, musk, amber, burnt sugar, vanilla, saffron, and rum.

  • I love being able to see how she tied the scent in to tightly with thoughts of Rima and her mother. Somehow I feel that it is very comforting with that patchouli and vanilla touch. Just something that makes you want to be on someone and embrace them.

Unfortunately i do not have any Sarah Horowitz fragrances but this sounds like it would be a good start.

If I was to make a bespoke perfume for my friend it would be a good combo of oud and woods

  • What a beautiful tribute to Sarah’s friend, Rima, and her late mother. It was interesting to learn about Sarah’s previous studies, and I love how it has helped her in perfumery. Journeys 4/Rima sounds like a very beautiful fragrance. I am especially intrigued by Ida’s comment, that it’s a “mélange of gourmand and mysterious elements”. I also appreciate that the fragrance is very long-lasting.

Out of the fragrances I have tried from Sarah Horowitz, my favorite is Perfect Veil. It’s such a comforting and addictive scent. If I could make a bespoke perfume for a friend, it would include her favorite smells: vanilla, sweet tobacco, spices, amber, orange, and a hint of rose.

Thank you, Ida, for the great review, and thank you to Sarah Horowitz Parfums for the giveaway. I am located in the USA.

  • While I’m not usually drawn to patchouli-forward scents myself, I do find that it makes a great companion note when blended properly, with it’s woody, chocolatey facets. The review makes this sound imminently wearable even to non-patchouli lovers. I have only tried a few SH parfums, but Perfect Twilight has been the favorite so far.

  • Great review, Ida. Journeys 4/Rima is a lovely tribute to both Sarah’s friend Rima and Rima’s mother. Ida pointed out that while it achieves that aim, it also feels part of a larger body of work, “preserving continuity with the body of Sarah’s compositions” (Tapestry’s hearth and kitchen comfort comes to mind). I’m intrigued by the ways in which Sarah highlights the core patchouli note (shadowy and varied resins, restrained citrus, a palette of ruddy hues) and this fragrance’s balance of soothing mood and material potency (12 hour longevity on the skin). I’d love to try it. If I were to make a bespoke fragrance for a friend, I’d try to reference the nostalgic smells of childhood holidays, which is what makes Tapestry so comforting. It’s my favorite of Sarah’s fragrances that I’ve tried.

    I’m in the USA.

  • That is so cool she made a fragrance for her friend with a nod to the mom. I love gourmand perfumes, just not too edible. This mysterious gourmand sounds amazing. Not familiar with any of her perfumes. I always say I want to make a fig newton perfume for my mom, every time she tests my perfume and my dad smells it, he jokingly always says “smells like fig newton”. Thanks for the chance!! USA.

  • Ida, as always, i am so moved by your words and how you honor each creation as a unique work of art. All of the comments have touched me beyond words; I am forever grateful for our community of fragrance lovers!

It is so lovely to create a perfume in honor of someone, especially for a dear friend. The notes of 4/Rima sound soothing and comforting, yet also luscious. There are so many beautiful notes here. I haven’t tried anything from Sara Horowitz Parfums, but I have heard many raves for her Perfect Perfumes, especially Perfect Veil.
If I were to create a bespoke perfume for a dear friend, it would have elements of flowers found growing wild on country roads, honeysuckle and buttercups.

Thanks for the wonderful review Ida. I love Khalil Gibran and those lines on friendship were quite apt.

I haven’t smelt a Sarah Horowitz fragrance, but this one really sounds like a wonderful tribute to her friend and mother. I adore patchouli and love the way that this scent has a nice mix of citrus, florals and resins.

My bespoke fragrance for my dear friends would be a chypre, heavy with fruits and florals and a beautifully resinuous base.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I didn’t know Sarah had a minor in Philosophy and Religeon! And how she approaches her perfume from that angle is so amazing. I also never thought of astrology and perfuming but Venusian and earthy Taurus is perfect for this type of patchouli floral Chypre wonder! How lovely that it is all based on love!! Honestly these notes are my kryptonite, Mysore sandalwood, blood orange and orris root, Tunisian amber and black rose and Sarah’s vanilla etc. I am most keen to have a bottle and would cherish it.
I am in California thank you for the chance!
