Sanae Intoxicants Nightcap review

Sanae Barber is a perfumer, nomad, and a storyteller. She was born in Japan and has traveled the world. She settled in Los Angeles and started creating her scents, inspired by her experiences and the California vibe. Sanae Intoxicants are hand-blended, small batch, artisanal scents – manifestations of her thoughts, experiences and feelings.  Her website explains that the scents are “created using only all-natural botanic oils, resins and absolutes, fixed with the finest organic grain alcohol, “Intoxicants” are the result of slow exploration…a highly creative, nearly meditative, process.

Perfume making started as a hobby for Sanae, but she quickly realized this was her “calling”. Sanae then took classic perfumery classes. “I was introduced to a wide palette of scents that I had never experienced before,” Barber remembers, “and that’s probably what draws me most to this process, that craving for the unfamiliar. Because every scent, brings a new feeling, much like a song or a story.”

Each of her scents tells an intimate tale of her adventures, taken from her memories, emotions, experiences and passions.  Her stories told in scent, woven of the finest natural oils from all over the world, are transcendent experiences, imprinting an indelible mark on your psyche.  These unforgettable impressions harness the power of emotion to transport you to magical places in Sanae’s memory and what your own imagination dares to conjure, through these scented potions.

Each wearer has a different, personal experience wearing Sanae’s scents, and that is what Sanae intends – that each wearer, with the help of these elixirs of passion, taps into their own memories, passions and desires as they experience her creations. Sanae Intoxicants Nightcap is one such creation. An intense, transportive experience is to be had with one sip of this daring elixir. One of Sanae’s clients likened Nightcap to “lying naked on a bearskin rug, in front of a fire, drinking whisky and smoking”. Yes, SO MUCH YES! I can see that too.

Sanae Intoxicants Nightcap conjures up for me more of an outdoor, adventurous, daring aspect too. Nightcap transports me to an exotic, majestic desert landscape. It is night – the sky is absolutely clear, moonless, and awash with a spectacle of infinite stars.  The air and sand are cool, but in the air is the smell of sunbaked rocks lingering from the day.  I look across the sand dunes and see the faint light of a fire in the distance. I start to walk over to the fire, and as I approach, the smell of burning wood, ash, smoke and ancient resins fill my nose.  It is dry, rich, atmospheric, heady and intoxicating.  I reach the fire – it is intensely hot and welcoming against this cool night air, and it is roaring with gold, orange, red and amber-colored flames reaching into the night sky, and sending shimmering sparks like glitter high into the air to meet the twinkling stars.  I am transfixed.

A voice pulls me out of my transfixed-by-the-fire state. I look across the fire, and there stands a piercingly handsome man.  He smiles, his white teeth starkly contrasted by his dark, glossy beard.  He is dressed very ruggedly with a leather jacket and has a fur draped across his shoulders – I can tell he spends many nights like this out in the desert under the stars. He comes to me and presses his cheek to my cheek in greeting. His cheek is arrestingly warm, and I can smell him – he is a heady mix of resins, smoke, fire, amber, leather, musk, fur, desert air and shrubbery (perhaps he slept in labdanum bushes last night?). I am transfixed again, this time by his entrancing smell and the fire dancing in his dark eyes.  “I’ve been waiting for you”, he almost whispers, and has two drinks in his hands. He hands one glass to me – I take a sip – its warmed, golden cognac, as deep, honeyed and rich as his seductive eyes.

He takes the fur from his shoulders and lays it on the sand in front of the fire and says “sit”. I sit down onto the soft plush fur; I press my fingers into it – it’s thick and warm in my hands. He sits down next to me. He places a small plate of fleshy figs on the fur. I look at the firelight dance on his intensely handsome face, out at the starry sky and wonder if I am dreaming. Whatever the night holds, this is already turning out to be one very delicious, exciting Nightcap indeed!

Omg this sounds incredible! I always want to smell like I’m drinking bourbon in front of a fire on a bearskin rug! I’m not familiar with Sanae Intoxicants but I think I should probably change that. Thanks for the draw and for introducing me to something new to me. From the US.

I really like the background Cynthia gave of the perfumer and her inspiration and goals for her scents. Also, I really liked Cynthia’s breakdown of the fragrance by way of the picture she drew for us as to where the fragrance transported her to, a nice thorough picture (“Sanae Intoxicants Nightcap conjures up for me more of an outdoor, adventurous, daring aspect too. Nightcap transports me to an exotic, majestic desert landscape.”)

  • Scent is such a potent encapsulater of memory and experience. I can smell a fragrance or aroma and that immediately transports me to a time in my past. Nightcap is reminiscent of a night in the desert by a bonfire. The firewood, smoke, leather and figs sound like a powerful opening on a bed of vetiver and musk. I would live to try this. I’m in MD, USA.

  • I loved the starry night sky pic I’m a fan of unique unisex fragrances and Nightcap sounds perfect. Thanks for introducing this brand, to me. Mich USA

  • Wow. Cynthia certainly painted an incredibly vivid and alluring picture with her description of Sanae’s Nightcap. I couldn’t help but picture the two she was describing as Khaleesi and Khal Drogo from the acclaimed Game of Thrones HBO series (which I recently re-watched). One of my favorite aspects of a fragrance is when they are transportive in nature and I love that Cynthia touched on this characteristic of Nightcap. From the note breakdown and her appraisal of the scent it certainly screams delicious and enticing. It would be fantastic to get my nose on this tantalizing tonic so thanks, as always, for the opportunity and cheers from Illinois guys!

  • So much seduction crammed into such a small space I think I know how this story ends!! Thank you for the opportunity! I live in the US.

  • Cynthia’s writing is beautiful and full of imagery. She truly brought the fragrance to life! I want to take an adventure out in the desert with Night Cap. Based in the UK.

What a beautiful sensual description. I can’t wait to try it out for myself! While reading, I was reminiscing the first holiday with my girlfriend. Cuddling at our campfire. Enjoying a couple of drinks. Amazing nights! Your story really invokes some passionate memories!

I felt transfixed reading Cynthia’s review! Very grateful for having the opportunity to get to know Sanae Barber, her extremely appealing, refined and individualistic approach to perfumery, and one of her fragrant creations. I love the imagery Cynthia conjures up in her description of the fragrance. Nightcap sounds amazing – like the purest connection with the natural world in all its forms. Fantastic concept, made even more enticing by the use of only all-natural botanic oils, resins and absolutes. I am so in for a Nightcap like this! Thank you from Ireland, EU

  • I’m very interested to try Sanae’s collected works for multiple reasons, e.g. when I read this part in particular: “Sanae Intoxicants are hand-blended, small batch, artisanal scents – manifestations of her thoughts, experiences and feelings. Her website explains that the scents are “created using only all-natural botanic oils, resins and absolutes, fixed with the finest organic grain alcohol, “Intoxicants” are the result of slow exploration…a highly creative, nearly meditative, process.”” I like the notes listing for this fragrance. Also, I’m interested to try this fragrance when Cynthia describes it as: “An intense, transportive experience”. I live in the U.S.A. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity.

  • A glass of cognac sipped while sitting in front of a campfire, with an aura of resins and labdanum floating around you. Sounds truly enticing and I’d love to smell that captured in a bottle.

  • What an imaginative description of a perfume! I especially liked the part about handsome mysterious man offering a drink… Night desert, smoke, ash, fur (!), figs and a guy with a glass of golden, honeyed cognac – I just cannot resist this description and ingredients.

Nightcap truly sounds sounds like a nightcap of a fragrance, a spritz to end the night with and something of beauty and comfort.

I loved the anticipation that Cynthia’s review brings out!

  • Interesting read how she realized perfume was her “calling”. Yes, perfume is a story, it’s very much art. I never realized that until I got into niche perfume. Used to just look at fragrance as something to make me smell good. Love to see such expression in scent. USA.

Lovely review Cynthia! What I enjoyed about Cynthia’s review of Sanae Intoxicants Nightcap is her imagery of how it whisks her away to an exotic, a beautiful majestic desert with the clear night sky, the smell of a bonfire and the cool night air mixing with the memory of a handsome stranger. What a lovely and absolutely transporting description! It makes me really really want to smell Nightcap, and I can’t wait to try it. I live in the US.
