Roja Parfums 51 Pour Femme (Roja Dove)~ Perfume Review + I Feel Pretty Draw

Natalie Wood as Maria in West Side Story

I feel dizzy; I feel sunny; I feel fizzy and funny and fine – and so pretty! Miss America can just resign…” ~ Maria’s song from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story

My, my – that Natalie Wood! Although American soprano and ‘ghost singer’ Marni Nixon actually sang the role in the renowned 1961 film, we will never forget Natalie’s luminous beauty as our quintessential Puerto Rican Juliet in West Side Story. Passionate, innocent, guileless, hopeful: when I smell Roja Dove’s 51 Parfum it summons all of her, with those immense pleading eyes. I’m smelling/envisioning this parfum through Natalie-tinted lenses. It’s an abundantly floral, spicily sweet dance number in triple meter. Resistance is futile.

Natalie Wood as Maria in West Side Story

This thing, what is it in itself, in its own constitution? What is its substance and material?” ~ Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, Number 11. Why Marcus Aurelius, of all people? When we examine a fragrance these queries resemble a sort of spirit guide: rather than mere like or dislike, we are enjoined to engage further. It no longer becomes a case of “I hate fruity florals”, or “orientals are suffocating” – but penetration into what the essence may be. Let’s investigate more closely.

51 Parfum  (2016) is a fruity floral oriental, and no amount of shilly-shallying will alter this. You may immediately close your mind to it if that’s your wont, or peer inside to see how it’s composed, how it works or doesn’t; what its components are like. Substance and material: quality comes first, and Roja Parfums 51 Pour Femme smells expensive straight out of my tester. Floral absolutes are impeccably fine, aromachemicals/art approximation such as lily of the valley; cashmeran and very likely gardenia are lovely and augment the otherwise botanical essences which form the lion’s share of 51. In other words, no corners were cut in the process. What is its nature? Roja Parfums 51 Pour Femme is blithe, sun-drenched and pure of heart; like Maria in West Side Story, there isn’t a single mean bone in her body. She radiates honeyed solar bonhomie from every angle (if she weren’t so deliciously rounded), a generous, playful being full of goodwill. Whatever her age, she is youthful-feeling, with her nosegay encompassing humble muguet and leafy violet as well as the more exotic tropical flowers and bridal orange blossom. Underscored with a smattering of clove and cinnamon, a raspberry kiss, bedded in satiny woods, gourmand caress of benzoin and vanilla, a silvery dose of orris: can the bride be too beautiful? Too much, too pretty? Where’s the flaw?

Roja Parfums 51 lilts, twirls, light on its feet and beaming with pleasure; it smells as if it were created with great affection and a nod towards the classical vein of grand perfumery. If a man can wear Chanel No.5 or Bal à Versailles and break your heart – he can surely wear this. Why play to type? Let others define you?

For me, Roja Parfums 51 Pour Femme is Natalie Wood femme fleur – but don’t let that stop you, any of you. Life is too brief to not feel pretty…as glorious Grace Slick sang: “You’re only pretty as you feel; as pretty as you feel inside.” Notes: bergamot, lily of the valley, rosegardeniaorange blossomtuberoseylang-ylang, raspberry, violet leaf, anise, cinnamon, clovespatchouli, cashmere wood, sandalwood, benzoin, vanillaorris root

  • The thing that jumped out at me from the review was the lack of any mention of the price… must be really expensive. I enjoyed the focus on Natalie Wood. Most of all, I really like classical perfumery.

  • This perfume reminds me of something my mom would have worn years ago. The lily of the valley and raspberry notes sound delicious together. I truly enjoyed seeing pictures of Natalie Wood again. Thanks for the draw . In the U.S.A.

  • I love the feeling of light-heartedness that comes through in the review. From the review, Roja 51 sounds like laughing sunlight. I love fruity florals.

  • Very well broken down and explained. Anyone who has a taste for top shelf perfumes such as roja has my attention in regards to there opinion about one of his scents. This was a great review and I like how she tied it into vintage film and play work as I’m a big fan of vintage film . Thank you for entering me in this draw

  • I do like fruity florals but only if they are well balanced. Otherwise they smell too young and simple to me. I love the allusion to a person, as it helps me imagine more than a simple listing of fragrance notes.

Thank you for this review of what is no doubt a Roja Dove stunner. I like Ida’s reference as to who wears a fragrance-why should a male or female be defined by a particular type of fragrance? I have always felt this way. This one sounds lovely, classic floral, fruity, spicy. All of the elements are creating a very attractive bouquet that simply sounds heavenly. It must be beautiful, since we all know that Natalie Wood certainly was! I don’t have a favorite Roja Parfum, as I have never tried any of them. Thank you for this generous draw!

  • Great review. I’ve always apreciated this type of combination, fruity-floral, especially for women fragrances but i didn’t had the chance to smell a super quality one. I would love to try this juice, especially coming from such a big name house like Roja parfums. Thanks for this draw, Oakland US.

” She radiates honeyed solar bonhomie from every angle (if she weren’t so deliciously rounded), a generous, playful being full of goodwill.” Ida’s description is bound to make you like fruity florals no matter what you may have thought of them before. i don’t have a favorite Roja. Thanks for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Mr_Sillage says:

I love the Pour homme Parfum version. I have half of my bottle left and in cherishing it. Ida has this amazingly beautiful way of describing scents and everyone she talks I about, I feel the urge to try.
*Not here for entry. Just for the read*
    Good luck everyone!

  • If this perfume is only half as pretty as Ida’s review describes it as…..it must be nearly perfect. Yes, I love fruity florals…I like a sweet/sour vibe rather than cloyingly sweet. I recently received a Roja Dove sample and was excited to try it out but seem to have misplaced it…drats! Thank you for the chance and I am in the US.

  • fazalcheema says:

If this reminds Ida of Natalie Wood, I do wonder how it smells like. I am in US.

  • kggilbert says:

The standout part of Ida’s review, what I liked the most? Was the description of the perfume being “pure of heart.” What more can you ask of a fragrance? You are, indeed, only as pretty as you feel, but being pure of heart is all that I could desire. I adore fruity florals as a rule, it may be my favorite fragrance Category. I especially adore them if they are well made and well blended. My favorite Roja perfume, at this moment is Fruity Aoud. I am in the US and I am so intriguied by this fragrance!

  • Wow, this is pretty cool way of describing the scent, and then “I’m smelling/envisioning this parfum through Natalie-tinted lenses. It’s an abundantly floral, spicily sweet dance number in triple meter. Resistance is futile…” Love it.

  • Great review Ida! It was a really nice read! What appealed to me were your descriptive words, and the amazing notes of the perfume. I’m sure it smells divine! I LOVE fruity florals, and my favorite Roja Dove fragrance from the few I’ve had the pleasure of trying is Reckless. Thanks so much for the draw!

  • roxhas1cat says:

Sounds absolutely divine. Twirls, beaming with pleasure….I’d love to try. I am not familiar with this line. I’ve seen some reviews of some on youtube and read some reviews. I hear they don’t cut corners and their scents are very highly regarded. No one in my area carries it so I haven’t had the chance to sample. I do like a well crafted fruity floral, there are a lot out in the market that aren’t so nice. Thanks for the chance. US.

  • I love fruity florals when they are made well and Roja Dove is my favorite perfumer. Hopeful and pure of heart- it sounds exquisite. Please enter me. Such a lovely review

  • Wow, now is my chance to own a Roja! They make such great fragrances with superb quality. My favorite thing about the review is how the fragrance was compared to Maria in West Side Story, sun-drenched and pure of heart – great imagery! I do like fruity-floral but my wife LOVES them so it would please us both. Arkansas, USA

  • Thank you, dear Ida for this really beautiful review. You described this Roja Parfume 51 so nice, that me, being man wont to have this gorgeous floral-fruity beauty.
I like floral- fruity perfumes. From Roja I like Fetish Homme.

  • I have never tried a Roja fragrance and would love to. If it is as lovely as Natalie Wood, it has to be wonderful. Such a great review. Thank you . I am in California.

  • The spicy notes sound like it’ll keep this fragrance unisex, even though I’ll wear stuff which leans on the more feminine side, depending on the notes.
I like some fruity florals. I’d consider Black Violet one, and that’s my fav om Ford scent.
Of Roja Dove, I really like Amber Aoud. Despite the price tag.
    I’m in the US, thanks

  • I liked Ida’s review- so nice and so sincere. This article is especially soulful.
I liked this part especially: “a raspberry kiss, bedded in satiny woods, gourmand caress of benzoin and vanilla, a silvery dose of orris: can the bride be too beautiful?”
One of my lovely olfactive group is floral-fruity!
Of Roja Dove I like Elysium, Reckless Homme.

Such a lovely review and what appealed to me most was the comparison of the fragrance as a “spicily sweet dance number in triple meter.” That gives me an instant visual of a saucy, flirty and bright scent. i do enjoy a fruity floral when its well made, especially when theyre done with quality ingredients as this review indicates this Roja is. Often fruity florals come off smelling like body spray and I enjoy a truly elegant perfume done well. At the moment my favorite Roja is Enigma pour Femme. i am hoping to experience more of the Roja line.

  • I’ve smelled anything from Roja Parfums but I adore fruity florals. This one in particular sounds enchanting with additional spicy notes. It was a wonderful review and I definitely have added this to my wish list.
I live in the USA (Pennsylvania)

“No corners cut” is what caught my eye. I haven’t had the chance to sample any Roja Dove creations but from what I’ve read he truly does have love and respect for the vintage greats. Thanks for the draw and the review. I’m in the US

  • This sounds decadent! I’ve never smelled anything by Roja but would love the chance! I enjoy fruity florals leaning fruity. This sounds very feminine and pretty. I’m in the US.

  • My wife would love this, and what’s funny is that everyone says she looks just like Natalie Wood. I love the comparison between a fragrance and a culture icon.

  • Wow a Roja Dove! I have yet to try any of the fragrances, mainly because no stores here where I live carries them,& they are soooo expensive! It would be a dream come true to try this one! sounds promising & soooo pretty!!
I am a fan of fruity florals especially mixed with patchouli & sandalwood.
Fruity florals when done right are my thing! Good luck to everyone!!
    Thank You! USA based

  • Roja is definitely high quality as I always say you get what you pay for and I haven’t tried much from roja but they are definitely top notch and as you dont cut any corners for sure. I don’t own anything from roja yet because they are very pricey but they are worth it! Based off the notes and your wonderful description I definitely want to try this one. As always great article keep up the good work! I am in the USA in AZ.

Ida’s review brought me back to childhood! My grandma was Puerto Rican and an actress. She taught all of us kids the words to show tunes, and “I Feel Pretty” and “America” were two of them!

My favorite Roja is their Lily scent. It’s gorgeous and smooth. I seem to love most of the white florals I’ve tried from them so far. The raspberry note in 51 looks especially intriguing. I’m not a fan of cheap fruity florals but I’ve discovered that niche or high quality fruity scents don’t tend to have the harsh or overly syrupy effect that I hate about that genre.

Thank you to Europerfumes and Calfeurbon for the draw. I live in the US, please enter me.

  • I think fruity florals get a bad rap, if done well they can be quite beautiful. I’ve never tried a Roja Parfum but I’m intrigued by Ida’s review as Natalie Wood is a classic beauty that my mother adored in my childhood. I’m in the U.S. and appreciate the generous draw!

  • What a great draw ! Nice review as usual by Ida.
High quality bergamot, lily of the valley, rose, gardenia, orange blossom, tuberose, ylang-ylang, raspberry, violet leaf, anise, cinnamon, cloves, patchouli, cashmere wood, sandalwood, benzoin, vanilla, orris root– just WOW .
I do love deep and complex fragrances.
To be honest i’m not familiar with 51 Pour Femme , but i am a fan of Roja Dove fragrances.
I do own full bottles of Parfum Version of Enigma/Creation-E and vintage version of Bergamot Extrait -by FAR the best bergamot fragrance ever imo … unfortunately discontinued .
    Cheers from VA

  • Perfect question you mentioned in regards to fruity florals being done right. I do like them if they are well done. I have shied away from so many in the past because they were not. Ida mentioned keeping an open mind and really observing the composition which I appreciate. My favorite Roja is Enigma pour femme. I am in the USA.

  • Thank you Cafleurebon and Europerfumes for this generous draw and Ida Meister for her great review.
I love this line – “Underscored with a smattering of clove and cinnamon, a raspberry kiss, bedded in satiny woods, gourmand caress of benzoin and vanilla, a silvery dose of orris: can the bride be too beautiful ”
The only full bottle Roja Dove fragrance that i own is Risque for men – phenomenal scent , and the best Roja Dove fragrance imo , and one of the best fragrance ii ever smelled. It’s marketed for men , but it’s unisex to me.Bought the fragrance from UK mid 2015.As far as i can remember US name was something different – Creation R.

  • Wonderful review, I enjoyed how the visual elements of Natalie Wood in her movies and pictures helped tell the feel and mood of the the perfume. I love fruity florals and unfortunately don’t have a fav Roja yet! I need to smell them. Thanks for the draw! California.

  • This was a wonderful review and the references to Natalie Wood means that it’s an exquisite fragrance! This sounds like one of those that I need in my collection. A fruity floral with clove and cinnamon….I’m all in. I don’t own anything from Roja and it would mean the world to me to add this beauty to my collection. Thanks for the draw and I live in the US! 🙂
