Ramon Monegal Monbloom review

Portrait of dana’s mom holding dana, overimposed on her own mature self. Direction, photo, and collage by dana (created for Ramon Monegal Monbloom)

If I could carve

A tree hollow

In the chest of my beloveds

I would crawl in it

And sit in it,

Me in them

And the beloved in me,

Like a family

Parascheva was fast, loud, and inattentive to what village protocol demanded of her. Left pregnant on the brink of WWII, she birthed and raised her daughter, Anastasia, without a fuss, and short of a husband drafted to the front line (who was growing, as an escapee from a prisoner camp in Odessa, his own storyline of infinite randomness). Much is not to be said about Parascheva; neither was she handsomer or handier than others.

What she was, though, was happier, as if the sun always shone brighter upon her humble hut. Animals thrived around her; strangers lost found shelter with her; her garden (in name only, as she never tended it) exploded with blooms like she was some old, happy which pushing life out of everything she touched.

Anastasia was married very young and found herself mothering Cornelia soon after. Her household—her domain, ringing with the rhythms of her sewing machine and buzz of bees cradling the old lilac trees. Tied to the ground but elevated through the most random penchant for naive rhyming, Anastasia kept her hair done and her garden exact, blooms pushing correctly through the carefully-worked soil, healthy and proper and each knowing its place.

Cornelia, unlike her lineage, lives in a town, where water is running, logopedy is a thing, and blooming happens on windowsills many feet in the air. Within cement boxes atop one another, she lovingly brings words to children who don’t have them, much like she did with her own Dana long ago: back bent, attention intent, and eyes beaming with so much light it pushes through and breaks the silence.

Ramon Monegal Monbloom review

Ramon Monegal Monbloom. Photo and treatment by dana

As a female, you are born with all the eggs you’ll ever have- should one or more be destined to become another, they’ll have been in you since before you were born. Every grandmother, thus, is carrying their future grandchildren while they’re pregnant, bridging time in womanhood like a continuous song of collective memory.

Ramon Monegal Monbloom, too, is a bridge. Built in arches sprung across perfumery eras and levels of depths, it manages to be at once classical and fresh, grandiose but simple, intimate but universal. The first nose is intensely aromatic, like the perfumey infusion of an afternoon of garden work: oily herbs, slight sweat, fleshy flowers. What follows is the smoothest transition into (warm) earthiness, smoky, fulfilling, and resolved, which gives way, further still, to an enveloping, atemporal, almost animalic creaminess. And there it stays: life force in all its glory, reigned by a tuberose covering everything tuberose in the same way my she-tribe took words from naive rhyming all the way to CaFleureBon.

official notes: labdanum, tuberose, musk, patchouli, oud, ylang, jasmine, osmanthus, neroli, cedar

other perceived notes: vetiver, cumin, ambergris, suede, tonka, dirt, vanilla, tar

Disclaimer:  Ramon Monegal Monbloom selected by me as a #BestofMonegal My opinions are my own.

  • I love how this perfume was inspired by so many aspects of these women’s lives. Sunshine, animals, flowers all seem to blend into this fragrance that I would love to try. I haven’t tried Monegal’s creations before and I live in the USA.

  • valentinaghimpau says:

All this writing about women and their crucial role made me think once again about the true meaning of our live-only-this-moment-type of life. Maybe I shouldn’t skip any chances on becoming a mommy.

  • Lorie McMillin says:

I enjoyed the juxtaposition of time bridging. I only have samples of Ramon Monegal from the initial launch and I liked Ambra di Luna. I’m in the US.

  • Wow. What a beautiful tribute to all women who bring other women into being. Having just become grandmother to the first girl-child of my own first girl-child, I am awestruck by Dana’s reflections in this review. A tuberose described as earthy, herbal, smoky, and creamy definitely calls my name. Unfortunately, I haven’t yet tried any Ramón Monegal fragrances. I live in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • Beautiful article that’s full of wonderful memories! Please include me in another generous draw. USA

  • Tanase Lacramioara says:

Good evening. This review for me was emotional, and she left with many tears, but with real pleasure to read Dana. No matter what perfume it is, she puts soul and passion. The perfume has my favorite notes, tuberose, patchouli, ylang and jasmine, when I wear a fragrance that has one of these notes, my 5 year old daughter tells me that the smell of mother .Kiss from Romania

  • chrystyna says:

I think this review is pure poetry. The parallel between five generations of women in her family, the Matrioshkas and the arches across eras of perfumery in ‘Monbloom’ is almost philosophical. I never had the occasion to try any Ramon Monegal fragrances. I live in Romania.

  • smellslikehappiness says:

This was beautiful, I always love Dana’s reviews and this one really touched my heart. Thank you for the draw, live in the US.

  • Si so nice description! Very beautiful, Dana. Thanks!
I do not like herbal notes, but I think I will like this perfume, because it is not only about herbs, it’s as morning in garden: “oily oily herbs, slight sweat, fleshy flowers”.

I love Dana’s reviews. They are so emotional and her nose is very special. Her opinions are her own and she never disappoints! I haven’t tried any of Monegal’s perfume, but is never too late. Best wishes from Romania!

  • Dana herself is a bridge – between human and universal energy. Somewhere in her beautiful heart there is an open door to God. Thank you for this unique review, dearest soul!

  • I could feel life being breathed into this perfume bottle with every sentence I read. Its contents, I feel, are meant to give me life. (Commenting from USA)

  • It’s not often you can come do a blog and also be treated to such literary expression. One can only hope that the perfume will live up in cinematic beauty that was Dana’s review. I hope the perfume has a fair amount of natural notes to bring emotion and spirit – olfactory coloring as vividly her words adding warmth and depth as poignant as her story. I am not blessed with enough funds to have tried any Ramon’s perfumes before. I hope I may be included in the draw. Thank you.

  • Thank you Dana for sharing your mom story in such a nice way.
Monbloom should be a bit funky floral , slightly sweet, with hints of leather.
One of my favorite fragrances is Impossible Iris – Ramon Monegal. Sweet fruity-floral that alway makes me happy.

Monbloom starts out as aromatic before transitioning into animalic creaminess which makes sense due to role of tuberose in the composition. My fav. from Ramon Monegal is Mon Cuir. I am in US.

  • Now that’s what I call “A very touchy story”.
Really enjoyed what Dana wrote here. Description of Monbloom was in point too . More Dana please Lol
My girlfriend wears Flamenco , and I do like it a lot , but that’s the only Ramon Monegal fragrance that I know.
Thanks Dana and Europerfumes for this draw.

  • Dana, what a powerful piece of writing. It is a theme to be meditated on: the unbroken chain that connects a woman to all the mothers that created her, each woman unique but linked.

My favorite Ramon Monegal perfume is Entre Naranjos. I would love to try this one, too.

Thank you Cafleurebon and Europerfumes for the generous draw, and thank you Dana for your words.

  • Andreea grusuzache says:

I loved dana s description about the women before her, all of them are a little bit of herself. And I can myself in her words, thinking of my grandmother, my mother, me and my daughter.
I never tested anything from this house, but tuberose, jasmine, musk and tonka are my favourite ingredients.
    Greetings from romania

  • Love this piece, a fantastic thought provoking read. I like the theme of Matryoshka’s and have often thought about women carrying their eggs throughout life but Dana takes it deeper, I hadn’t considered that a mother may be carrying her future grandchildren as well in true Matryoshka fashion.
I like Cuirelle from this brand.

  • bigscoundrel says:

My wife would love the aromatic floral notes in this fragrance. I’m in the USA.

  • redwheelbarrow says:

What a beautiful and poetic review. This fragrance sounds gorgeous as well. Thank you for the draw. I am in the US.

  • maria mihalache says:

Dana is one of those who can bind invisible threads between people who do not know, have not seen and may never see, but have common passions. I like the story of the perfume presented as something that combines the generations of her family, the transition from shifting, war, child, joy, as good as a butterfly passes from one flower to another to pick nectar, perfume, although I know everything it was difficult, with shortcomings, war, but people then enjoyed a little, a flower, a smile ….

  • jeremyn87 says:

Although the note list mentions tuberose, the description sounds green, earthy, and dark. Which I would enjoy.
I havent tried anything from this house.
Im in the US. Thanks for the draw

  • I’ve never tried any fragrance from Ramon Monegal perfume. But I love the description and notes of Monbloom. I love tuberose perfumes but I’ve never had one that was combined with such earthy, leathery type notes. It sounds so gorgeous!
    I live in the US.

Thing with writting about perfumery is somehow tricky. If it’s long i lack the patience to read the whole thing ,if it’s short…it doesn’t attract me at all…now here it’s another situation.I read a lot,not many perfume reviews, but i read novels. I eat novels,i breathe novels. And this right here makes me want to know more,to know the story,to know the end. To find out how everything comes in place and what happenned to each and every one of them. To Parascheva,to Anastasia,to Cornelia,to Dana. And yes, goddam it,i NEED to smell the perfume that gave birth to this,to be there with them,to laugh and cry with the women, the three generations that brought Dana into this world. Cause i thank them all for her. And for her gift.

  • dana.sandu says:

Thank you all. I’ve learned to follow my story wherever it takes me, and it’s a joy to see others can partake.

  • Dana gave us a wonderful image of unity–past and present, “grandiose but simple”–in a great review of Ramon Monegal Monbloom. What came to mind was the unifying and awesome bridge in Mostar, Bosnia. Hope to enjoy the experience of this fragrance!

  • This is a particularly wonderful multimedia review. I have to give this site praise for producing some of the most thoughtful and surprising reviews in the world of fragrance. This sounds like something I’d adore. I’m in the US.

  • Bubeto_GG says:

What a character Dana is . She was in one of Sebastian’s videos a few months back , and i follow her since .
Few people would share stories like these .
Earthy , smoky , a bit just a bit animalic floral . Osmanthus could give Monbloom a twist if it’s prominent on me …. usually is .
To me the best Ramon Monegal fragrance is called Mon Patchouly. Top quality creamy floriental i only wear on special occasions .
    Thanks for the giveaway.

How poetic this article is! Loved reading about a simpler time!! I never thought about a woman carrying her future grandchildren whilst pregnant with her own child. Thought provoking. The notes in this have a lot of my favorites!! Thanks Dana. Never smelled anything from this house. USA

This was such a beautiful review of Monbloom. I always find myself reading and re-reading Danu’s reviews. She writes like a poet. I love perfumes that mix herbs and flowers, that are creamy, animalic. I love that dirt is listed as a note. I have never tried anything from Ramon Monegal.
    I live in the USA.

  • Thanks for another great review, Danu! I love the story and the poetry featured to tie to the essence of Monbloom. I love this art of your description- ‘Monbloom, too, is a bridge. Built in arches sprung across perfumery eras and levels of depths, it manages to be at once classical and fresh, grandiose but simple, intimate but universal.’ Thanks for this opportunity. – CA, USA

Every fragrance could potentionalyy be the key of opening the Pandora box full of childhood memories and dreams . I can say one particular Ramon Monegal fragrance is doing this every time I’m wearing it.
When I was a kid there was a gelateria right next door to our house.
When I was coming home my favorite thing to do , was to ask there if I can clean something, or throw the garbage , so I can get my favorite combination- 2 scoops of cherry and 1 scoop of strawberry icecream . Each and every time I’m wearing Cherry Musk I’m reminded to those days. That’s exactly how it smells too.
I’m not familiar with Monbloom l, but the notes I like.
Osmanthus , labdanum , cedar wood , incense and a blast of white flowers giving Monbloom a slight animalic touch.
By the way my girlfriend is called Anastasia 😉
Really enjoyed reading this Dana – thank you.
    Thanks to Europerfumes too .

Good to know Dana had Interesting path, and loving people to travel with.
Monbloom sounds wonderful- white floral goodness with patchouli, Osmanthus and incense is what I imagine.
I happen to have one Ramon Monegal bottle called Bravo. Got it 99% full from a neighbor for $80. What a steal. Unwanted gift – that’s why was so cheap. Smells like a hookah to me. A gem no doubt , but also a proof you should not buy fragrances for someone else, without even asking him/her , or even know his/her taste.
Appreciate Dana story , and the giveaway campaign

Dana, great review of Ramon Monegal Monbloom. An aromatic and floral opening transitioning into a earthy and smoky drydown. I am from the USA. I don’t have a favorite Ramon Monegal Perfume because I haven’t tried anything from this house.

  • Thinking of ancestors and recalling such tender memories, this is something only Dana can do when holding a perfume bottle. Thank you, Dana, for reviewing this way Monbloom! My favorite fragrance from Ramon Monegal is Cuirelle. I must call my mum, now 🙂 I am from Romania.

  • VerbenaLuvvr says:

What a wonderfully evocative and affecting review, Dana. Becoming a mother has opened my eyes to an entirely new view of the world and intense array of emotions that I never before knew existed, and has changed my life so much for the better. I want to pass to my children all that I have learned from the mothers before me, that which you have described so wonderfully as the continuous song of collective memory. I have not tried any yet from this line. I live in the US and thank you for this generous draw.

  • Loredana O says:

This review, as all of Dana’s reviews, touches my heart and makes me curious about that fragrance. The idea of bridge across perfurmery eras is very interesting. I haven’t tried Monegal’s creations before.

    Beautiful family pictures .
There’s something really nostalgic in this review , but at the same time it’s nice to see Monbloom clicks with Dana in a really nice way. Osmanthus i love , and i wonder how well is blended with the white flowers , cedar and patch.
Never had a chance to smell Ramon Monegal fragrances.

In its poetic rythm, this review brings us closer to life as it should be lived: in a natural way, continously, keeping track of the past, but endlesly moving into the future. I never smelled a Ramon Monegal perfume so unfortunately I do not have a favorite:)
