The time has come when swaying on its stem
Each flower exhales perfume like a censer;
Sounds and perfumes spiral in the evening air;
Mournful waltz and languorous vertigo!
Each flower exhales perfume like a censer;
The violin trembles like an afflicted heart;
Mournful waltz and languorous vertigo!
The firmament is sorrowful and lovely as an immense altar.
~ Charles Baudelaire, Harmonie du soir (Evening Harmony) from Les Fleurs du Mal (my translation)

Award-winning natural perfumer Charna Ethier of Providence Perfume Co has been on our radar here at ÇaFleureBon for 12 years now; she never ceases to surprise and edify our collective voracious nose. I personally believe that one secret of Charna’s success is this: she follows her intuition and listens intently to her inner voice. The end result is unfailingly a beautiful, iconoclastic fragrance which resembles absolutely nothing else on the market. Providence Perfume Co’s latest oeuvre, Lapsang Lover – sent me swooning and running immediately to her website to purchase a bottle.

Franz Von Stuck The Sin, 1912 via wiki

One whiff of Providence Perfume Co Lapsang Lover conjured (for me) dangerously erotic paintings of Franz Von Stuck and the decadent, sensuous verse of Charles Baudelaire – synesthesia that dances before your eyes, murmurs in your ear. If it were music, it would be Erik Satie’s Gnossiènne No.1: an exquisite melancholy intonation of solitary burning desire. If Lapsang Lover was a fabric, it would be a plush, deep velvet of blood-red hue approaching black. Hyperbole? Sample for yourself and tell me if I’m wrong; odds are that you will feel similarly.

There is no seduction without mystery, a whispering of risk, the peril of being swept into an abyss. In this wise, Lapsang Lover meets all these criteria gracefully. Like Leonard Cohen’s rose on its ladder of thorn, bosomy rose blooms amidst a maelstrom of aromatic black tea and the perfumer’s proprietary lapsang souchong tincture: smoky, voluptuous, a cavern embedded in leathery labdanum. Any bitterness must be smoothed with amber for illumination, sweetened with rich and animalic honey, bathed in cardamom. I’ve always adored the lovely aridity of a fine myrrh when it accompanies rose – and in Providence Perfume Co Lapsang Lover Charna employs both myrrh and dulcet resins for balance. One of the aspects which I find particularly compelling is the masterful composition here; unlike so many other smoky tea treatments, we are not suffocated in order to make a point. It is all too easy to overdose on such a note, amplify it with a strong dose of guaiacwood, a vanilla creosol or birch tar (or countless other materials) – to which Charna does not resort. In spite of its seamlessness, Lapsang Lover gleams darkly; each fragrant voice is clearly heard while forming a harmonious whole. There is no doubt in my mind that Providence Perfume Co Lapsang Lover is both one of the best natural perfumes and overall fragrances of 2022. Notes: lapsang tea tincture, black tea, labdanum, fossilized amber, myrrh, rose, resins, cardamom, honey

Sample kindly provided by the perfumer – I loved it immediately.  My nose is my own…

    Very well written. Took me on a trip up and down through out the entire fragrance.
    Haven’t tried any of these fragrances but would love to.
    Appreciate the chance.

  • John Michael Jones says:

    Never tried this brand before but it contains two of my favorite notes, myrrh and amber! FOSSILIZED AMBER at that!? Yummy!

  • Fantabulous review. This was my favorite part.
    If Lapsang Lover was a fabric, it would be a plush, deep velvet of blood-red hue approaching black.
    Thanks for the very generous giveaway, I live in the U.S..
    My favorite from the House is Moss Gown.

  • The fabulous details and very intriguing information appeal to me. I don’t have a favorite Providence Perfume Co fragrance because I never tried this house but I’d really love to try Lapsang Lover.

  • Count me in Ida. What a fabulous description. Rose, labdanum, honeyed facets…

    Ravishing.

  • I loved how Ida compared the perfume Lapsang Lover with a piece of music and also with velvet fabric. Seductive, dark, deep. And the notes are lovely. No experience with this brand, yet, so no favorites, yet. Thanks for your review, Ida, and the draw. I’m from the USA.

  • What intrigued me is that she made a black tea that isn’t relying on pitch/tar or earthy patchouli or caramel sugar…but rose and labdanum as the balance to heighten not derail. It’s a breathe of fresh air on both rose and tea scents imo. Reading the supporting notes of cardamon, honey and myrrh…how could it not be glorious?!!

  • Ida really makes a great job here. I think that Co Lapsang Lover is just an amazing fragrance due to the black tea, and the lapsang tea, just wow. I think this surely is a work of art in all its words. I also love that the brand uses top notch ingredients, delivering great natural perfumes.
    My favorite from the brand is Vientiane.
    USA here.

  • The comparison to fabric or mudic is very evocative, and the scent descriotion makes me crave this! US

  • Lapsang Lover sounds like a sin to me. Desirable and wanted and dark and deep. I love how Ida takes us to Erik Satie, Charles Baudelaire, Franz Von Stuck. Great review! I would love to win this draw.
    Hugs from Romania ( with address to ship to in US)

  • What a descriptive article! I adore the note of tea in fragrances and am on a quest to find the best tea perfumes. I can’t wait to try Lapsang Lover! ~Indiana

  • What a beautiful review of Lapsang Lover,
    I can’t wait to try it. I have no doubt it’s a beautiful fragrance after having recently discovering Providence Perfume Co., and I am definitely hooked. My 2 favorites are “Rose 802” and “Love In A Mist.”

    Providence Perfume Co (Charna) is hands down my favorite natural artisan perfumer.

  • I loved the author’s description of the scent as a fabric. So beautifully descriptive.

    I really love Charna’s Drunk on the Moon, and Mousseline Peche.

  • I would love the opportunity to try this fragrance! I drink Lapsang Souchong tea all the time. I love how it is smoky but also airy. Smoke notes in fragrance can overwhelm me, but Ida describes how Charna Ethier has kept the smoke balanced so it doesn’t suffocate the fragrance, which is exciting! My favorite fragrance from Providence Perfume Co is definitely Sedona Sweet Grass. I’m from MN, USA.

  • Lapsang souchong tea has such an intriguing smokey scent, I can see how it would be amazing as the focus of a fragrance. The myrrh, rose, cardamom, honey and fossilized amber sound lovely. I haven’t tried any Providence perfumes and do not have a favorite one. MD, USA.

  • Love this article, always fun to learn new companies like Providence Perfume! Plus who doesn’t like seductive scents? I thought it was super cool how she used a classic painting to symbolize the fragrance, really sets the tone for readers. Would love to try, goodluck to all!

  • I haven’t tried this brand before, but I would certainly love to after reading this glowing review! One of the best natural perfumes of 2022 is high praise indeed. I do enjoy a quality tea fragrance. Lovely review as always 🙂

  • Hi, very great review. I never try anything from this house but I really want to explore them. Lapsang is my favourite note. Thank you for your writing and the draw. I’m in Texas

  • Providence Perfume Co has been on my radar for a while, but I haven’t tried any of Charna Ethier’s fragrances. Lapsang Lover sounds like a wonderful place to start; I love the smoky, tannic nose of Lapsang Souchong tea, but I haven’t experienced it blended with rose, honey, or myrrh. I’m also happy to read in Ida’s review that Lapsang Lover is balanced and treats the smoky aspect of its namesake with subtlety. (I’m reminded of Imaginary Authors O, Unknown!, with its clever pairing of orris butter and Lapsang Souchong). Lapsang Lover sounds like a must-try. Thanks for the review, Ida.

    I’m in the midwest, USA. I haven’t tried any Providence Perfume Co fragrances, but Heart of Darkness, Moss Gown, and Tabac Citron are all on my to-try list.

  • Michael Prince says:

    What appeals to me about Ida’s review of Providence Perfume Co Lapsang Lover is how beautifully detailed her review is. You can tell she really enjoys this Tea based fragrance that offers a warm spicy feeling of cardamom accentuated with animalic sweetness of honey and resinous facets of fossilized amber and vanilla, leathery labdanum, and a lovely floral rose. My favorite fragrance from Providence Perfume Co is Tabac Citron. I am from the USA.

  • As soon as I became aware of Providence Perfume Co Lapsang Lover, I knew I had to try it. I love tea in anything- as a drink, as a flavoring in food, and in fragrance. It was interesting to read Ida’s review of Lapsang Lover. I wouldn’t have thought it would come off as melancholic; however, I am drawn to melancholic fragrances. I, too, have always enjoyed myrrh when it accompanies rose. Overall, I love every single note included in Lapsang Lover so I’m sure it will be a love for me. I have not tried nearly as many fragrances from Providence Perfume Co as I would like, but I have particularly enjoyed Ginger Lily.

    Thank you, Ida, for the incredible review, and thank you to Charna Ethier for the giveaway. I am located in the USA.

  • Ida!!! ❤️❤️❤️ Baudelaire and Gnossiènne No 1? Right there, I’m sold. ❤️❤️ I don’t need any more information. Wow! Two of my favorites! Take into account that it’s a fragrance by Providence Perfume Co & Charna Ethier… be right back I’ll be ordering at least a sample….
    ❤️❤️❤️❤️

  • Regis Monkton says:

    I’m interested in trying this fragrance for multiple reasons. I can like the combination of rose with labdanum, and I like the idea of using cardamom as a spice to accompany those two things. Also, I like it that honey is included. I appreciate when Ida says: “I’ve always adored the lovely aridity of a fine myrrh when it accompanies rose – and in Providence Perfume Co Lapsang Lover Charna employs both myrrh and dulcet resins for balance.” I haven’t tried anything yet from Providence Perfume Co., but I’d like to try all of Charna’s fragrance releases. I live in the U.S.A.

  • I have not tried any of Providence Perfume Co’s creations, but I would love to smell this one! As a tea drinker, I love the smell of black tea and my interest is always piqued by a fragrance that promises to remind me of that. I love Ida’s description of the perfume as seductive and dark. I’m in the US!

  • wallygator88 says:

    Thanks for the great review Ida.

    I always appreciate Charna Ethier’s work. Being a natural perfumer, especially if you make your own tinctures is difficult. I’m super impressed that this fragrance has a Lapsang tincture and would love to get my nose on this.

    I’ve not had a chance to smell this house.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • I have heart of darkness which is wonderful. I would love to try this one, the aroma of tea sounds delightful!

  • sephrenia300 says:

    Wonderful article Ida! What appeals to me in Ida’s article is how Ida describes Lapsang Lover as seductive and erotic, yet restrained, as “There is no seduction without mystery”. I love tea scents, but I don’t think I have ever tried one that can be described as seductive – indeed most are meditative, calming, or even gourmand. A dark, seductive tea fragrance with thorny, “bosomy” rose blossoms at the heart sounds both exactly up my alley and yet also entirely unexpected. I absolutely can’t wait to try it! I do not yet have a favorite Providence Perfume Co fragrance as I have yet to try any. I live in the US.
