Phoenix Botanicals Apple Iris Root (Irina Adam) 2017- New Perfume Review + Autumn Fruits and Flowers Draw

 Irina Adam of Phoenix Botanicals

Aaah September! Officially autumn and all the stores and magazines are touting heavier coats long-sleeve shirts, boots, scarves, and (gasp) down outerwear for the encroaching cooler weather. The only problem is it's 75° here in the Pacific Northwest, we are all schivtzing (Yiddish for sweating), and cold weather clothing is the very farthest thing from my mind. "They" call it transitional, I call it insane. Still and all,  I love autumn's approach and  2x Art and Olfaction Finalist, natural perfumer Irina Adam of Phoenix Botanicals has given us the perfect gift for this time of year, a new fragrance Apple Iris Root.

I'm not quite ready to give up my lighter summer perfumes in lieu of the heavier scents of autumn so what to do and what to wear? Apple Iris Root perfectly straddles the changing of the seasons with a marvelous and complex perfume that you will be reaching for time and time again. If like me you actively avoid the annual Autumn rampant plague of anything “spiced pumpkin latte-esque” (including but not limited to deodorant apparently), but still love the feeling of an olfactive hit of Fall, then I suspect that Apple Iris Root will thrill and bewitch you to no end.

Described by perfumer Irina Adam as… “Cherry and Apple blossoms on the wind. A glowing blush of Hawthorn, Wild Rose, and Clover. Juicy apples, bitter seeds, a hint of boozy cider. Watery Iris root, dark and cool, holding the wildness of rivers, glistening with Frankincense, flowing into oceanic Ambergris. An untamed floral with a classic touch ~ a second skin of wind blown flowers.”

Apple Iris Root is the perfume you want to wear to accompany you on long autumnal walks through the woods or the city streets, perfect for raking leaves or sitting in steamy cafes watching the seasons change. It is the scent of the yearly “turning of the wheel" as summer heat makes way for autumn chill. It smells of cool nights, apple trees groaning with beautiful and shiny rouge- burnished fruit waiting to be picked. Gardens overflowing with the final flush of summer produce almost ready to be put to bed again for the year, bound for the canning and preserving jars of the kitchen to be made ready for winter feasting.

Beaches once overwhelmed with tanning bodies and children playing now blessedly deserted and yours alone to wander where the wind-scattered waves splash onto rock and sand, bringing a stinging cold and refreshing salt-infused scent of the ocean. This perfume is a scented Ouroboros if you will, a never ending annual transition; both beginning and end. My very favorite time of the year, and Apple Iris Root infused with both fruit and flower and built upon a gorgeous earthy and oceanic/organic fragrant base, will be my constant companion as I watch the wondrous ebb and flow of the year and the extraordinary changing of the seasons.

Notes: Galbanum, Petitgrain, Apple blossoms, Cherry, Hawthorne, Lilac, Iris + Orange blossoms, Fruit, Wild Rose, Davana, Angelica, Orris Root, Frankincense, Ambergris.

Disclosure: Thank you SO much to Irina Adam for supplying the samples. The opinions are my own.

  • This scent sounds like a lovely scent for the time of year in which we find ourselves–no longer summer but not yet really autumn. I love the idea of apple blossom and clover, tempered with cloves and frankincense. My favorite fruit in perfumery is lemon, followed by cherry and peach. I live in the USA. Thank you!

  • Ahhh, terrible timing for me! I am expecting my Phoenix Botanical sample order to arrive today and I’m sure I didn’t see this when I ordered! I like the idea of a transitional scent into fall and this sounds nice. I don’t have a favorite yet, but I will let you know! My favorite flower in nature is wisteria although I’ve never found a scent that captures its delicacy. My favorite fruit in perfume would be peach or plum, also my favorite to eat! Thanks for the review Robert. You are very prolific lately! USA

  • Perfume notes do not usually help me to imagine what a perfume will smell like, though I do have notes that I am drawn to. Great descriptions will pull me in. I know what “schivtzing” is but Robert did cause me to lookup Ouroboros. Now I want to try this fragrance even more. Fruit and flower is easy, peach and lilac. USA.

  • Thanks for this giveaway. This fragrance sounds interesting
Would like a chance to try it out. Haven’t tried anything from this
    House. From Cali
    Peace

  • I would love to try something that smells of fall and helps to counteract the pumpkin spice madness. I adore apples and have fond childhood memories of tart apple everything in the fall when our trees were full.
My favorite flower fragrance is Chinaberry, never found in perfumery. My favorite fruit in perfumery is pineapple (no way I could choose a favorite to eat) and I’m in the US.

  • I am definitely not an autumn person (too many bad memories of school starting) but i love when the beaches become less crowded yet it’s still hot enough to swim. I also like hot autumn days with cool nights. I’m a big fan of lilac and cherry, so I’d like to try this fragrance. My favorite Phoenix Botanical fragrance is Lilac Rain.
    I live in the USA.

  • I’m intrigued by a fragrance that invokes Fall and its transition between Summer and Winter. An autumnal walk does suggest many images. I don’t have a favorite Phoenix Botanical fragrance and I don’t associate flowers and fruits together. I love lilies, roses, and wild ginger, but the fruits are apples, peaches , and plums. Thanks for the draw. I live in the USA

  • I did a double-take when I saw the title of this one – it sounds perfect for this girl!!! A wonderfully written review, Robert. You said it perfectly: “Apple Iris Root is the perfume you want to wear to accompany you on long autumnal walks through the woods or the city streets.” This is going straight to the top of my try-list. I’m off to visit their website to learn more. Thank you for telling us about this one! I’m in the USA. Thanks for the generous draw as well!

  • I would love to try this- I’m a sucker for all things iris and this combination sounds so intriguing!

  • Autumn is my favorite time of the year with all the colors poping everywhere. The long walks in the cool mountains.
This one sounds like a smell that floats in the autumn breeze and keeps you guessing on its whereabouts.

    In USA,

  • I enjoyed Robert’s review and his description of Apple Iris Root being a transitional fragrance that “smells of cool nights, apple trees groaning with beautiful and shiny rouge- burnished fruit waiting to be picked. Gardens overflowing with the final flush of summer produce almost ready to be put to bed again for the year, bound for the canning and preserving jars of the kitchen to be made ready for winter feasting.” I think orange blossoms have a most heavenly fragrance. I have not yet had the pleasure of wearing a Phoenix Botanical perfume

Great Read! Phoenix Botanicals Apple Iris Root notes are interesting. I like the description of whole paragraph “Apple Iris Root is the perfume you want to wear to accompany…….and preserving jars of the kitchen to be made ready for winter feasting.”
Never tried any of the Phoenix Botanical perfume however Bed of Roses, Peach Tree Graden, Zephyr and Bonfire Rose are on my want list. Thanks for the generosity and opportunity by letting my relative address in US.

  • Tom Schroeder says:

The apple sounds uplifting, and I love cherry blossoms, but have yet to find a fragrance that incorporates that note to my expectations, so my hopes are up for this one. Yes, fall is perfect for when apples come into season, and the smell of an orchard is something I would imagine this scent to have. My favorite fruit is cherries, but alas, their season so quickly comes and goes. Peaches and nectarines are also a favorite. Now the note of Iris Root is something I am unfamiliar with, although Iris is familiar. I would like to sample Phoenix Botanical perfumes given this review. (San Jose, California, USA)
