Anyone who has read  CaFleureBon for any amount of time could probably guess which bottles get the most space on our Editor in Chief’s vanity. It was here on CaFleureBon’s site that I first discovered M.Micallef  and if I were to choose one House that perfectly captures the idea of perfume as art, it would be  the opulent gold washed crystal encrusted House that Martine Micallef and Geoffrey Nejman built in 1997. Every aspect of their creations celebrates the art of fine French perfumery.Their breathtaking bottles are worthy of the fragrances they hold; M Micallef produces some of the richest, most sumptuous fragrances available today. Like all fine art, their perfumes are beautiful and evocative; they conjure up memories and fantasies, taking you to other places in time while keeping you perfectly in the moment, savoring the beauty that surrounds you.  It is not surprising that such a house would produce the finest vanilla fragrance I have ever experienced. Note Vanillee is truly a masterpiece among all the treasures de Micallef, and I am not alone in thinking so.

the perfume composed by Jean-Claude Astier and Geoffrey Nejman was released in 2007 (although discontinued for a few years), and instantly became a cult classic. It is easy to understand why. This is not a foody vanilla, nor is it a stereotypical comfort scent. Gourmand lovers will certainly adore this fragrance, but to my nose, Note Vanillee is all about the glamour.

And while it would certainly be at home anywhere in Hollywood, this isn’t Grace Kelly’s aloof glamour; non, non….Note Vanillee is warm, sensuous Mediterranean glamour. It’s sexy but stylish, chic but never cheap, haute and hot all at once. It is Bardot seducing the masses with her pout at St. Tropez, Sophia Loren owning the red carpet at Cannes, at 19 or 69, forever and always. I asked my husband what he thought of Note Vanillee several hours after I sprayed it; he closed his eyes and proclaimed that it is what he imagined Raquel Welch’s skin to smell like.

licorice in perfumery

Note Vanillee opens with strong, smooth vanilla. It isn’t sweet at all, just warm, with a soft hint of sandalwood. There is also more than just a hint of licorice. I don’t see it listed in the notes, but I definitely smell licorice; not the sweet anise of black jelly beans, mind you, but the distinctive scent of black licorice ropes. Although the vanilla is certainly prominent, all three notes are incredibly well blended into the smoothest, most luxurious fragrance imaginable.  This accord alone makes an amazing perfume, but Note Vanillee has not yet finished her song.

As you float around on this opulent cloud of vanilla, things begin to sweeten up a little. Again, this is not a gourmand sweetness; it reminds me just a little of pipe tobacco. There is a honeyed aspect to it, another layer of incredibly luxurious warmth. At this point, Note Vanillee is indescribably rich and almost palpably golden. Cognac is listed in the notes, and while my nose doesn’t detect it, perhaps it’s what is lending this effect, because it is absolutely intoxicating. Hopefully you will not reach this point in the development when you’re trying to do something important, because you’re not going to be able to concentrate on anything other than how good you smell.

Raquel Welch décolletage

Two hours into the fragrance, I begin to notice amber. It isn’t powdery at all; it reminds me of an actual piece of amber. It crystallizes itself around the pillowy softness of the other notes, somehow giving the impression that it surrounds them, almost as if I was smelling Note Vanillee from a bowl made of amber.  Absolute magic, and Note Vanillee has one last trick wafting from her décolletage… her devastatingly seductive sillage.

Over the three days I tested Note Vanille, I would catch little bits of jasmine here and there as I went about my day. It most assuredly was not on my skin and I didn’t think too much about it, since I am a jasmine lover from way back; a whiff of jasmine is quite common in my daily routine. But yesterday as I was cleaning my house, going back and forth to the same areas, I finally realized that the jasmine was in the sillage of Note Vanillee. There is no trace on my skin whatsoever, but when I walk back into my sillage, there it is. Magic again!

Note Vanillee feminine? Oui et non, as it smelled amazing on my husband. His skin seemed to really draw out the sandalwood and amber. It had great lasting power on both of us, and the drydown is perfection.

I sprayed the last of my sample on our bedsheets and that’s all I’m gonna say about that, except that I may never wash them again.  Notes Vanillee is the best vanilla centric scent I have ever smelled; it went straight to the top of my Must Have list and I fully understand why there was such an outcry to bring it back after it was discontinued (word has it that our Editor in Chief pleaded for over a year). An answered prayer.

 Tammy Schuster, Contributor

Disclosure: I received my sample gratefully from M. Micallef, opinions my own.

Art Direction: I am not sure if my repeated emails to Geoffrey was in anyway responsible for bringing Notes Vanillee back. There were many. I own the original and to my nose I cannot detect a difference. I chose to focus on Tammy’s husband’s immediate association with the perfume to the imagined scent of a young Raquel Welch’s skin. Just in case you are wondering what fragrance I will be wearing as I watch the Golden Globes… Notes Vanillee!!

  • Yep I also wish my bed sheets would smell like this forever and I would not have to wash them. Notes Vanillee is an intoxicating adult confection for the skin or as I have called it Liquid Gold. I live in the US and right now its really cold here so Notes Vanillee would wrap my skin and warm me up from the outside in. Thank you for the opportunity.

  • How wonderful that your emails may have played a part in bringing back this beautiful fragrance. As a vanilla lover, this one really tickles my fancy and i would love to try it. I have not had the pleasure of experiencing any M Micallef scents before – hopefully this UK girl will be lucky on this occasion. thanks for the draw.

  • Wow! Vanilla and licorice mix sounds wonderful I would like to sample this…
    I haven’t tried any M. Micallef perfumes.

Thank you so much for doing rewiev and draw!

    I live in Italy

  • This sounds. Like such a dream. I would love to try this , the review left me utterly convinced. I live in the US. Thank you for the chance.

  • Argh this sounds to die for…”It’s sexy but stylish, chic but never cheap, haute and hot all at once”. Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren, vanilla, licorice AND Raquel Welch? Sign me up please! My favorite M.Micallef so far is Gaiac. Thanks for another fabulous draw! I’m in the US.

  • Mm mm. Vanilla & Amber? I haven’t even smelled this and I can imagine why it’s return was “pleaded” for! This entire review was enjoyable. Would I be so lucky as to win this one! omg
In the US and my fave Micallef right now is Akowa.

  • I liked hearing about the jasmine that could only be detected in the sillage. I’m in the US, and my current favorite M. Micallef scent is either Automne or Ylang, although I still haven’t gotten a sniff of Vanille Aoud, despite ordering a sample at least a year (maybe two?) ago.

  • Hi Tammy, I loved your description of Note Vanillee, the honeyed aspect, the luxurious warmth, and the difference in the scent on your husband’s skin. It is fascinating to hear how skin makes a scent’s character develop and change in surprising ways. And the photos of Raquel Welch, oh my, ooh la la, they paint a fabulous picture of the sumptuous Note Vanillee.

I don’t have a favorite scent from M Micallef, but I hope this will be the one. I also put Ylang in Gold on my must-try list. I love vanilla and ylang-ylang.

I am in the US. Thank you for the review, the draw, and the wonderful things I learn at ÇaFleureBon.

  • I was glad to see this back at Luckyscent because I too had the original and thought it superb. The licorice and Amber are notes I now will look for. The jasmine is so divine
I love black Ananda, Gaiac and Mon Parfum
Since I read here about Akowa I have wanted to try that too!
Those photos of Raquel Welch really are fabulous such a beauty and such an imaginative husband Tammy is married to:)
    I live in Canada

  • This article made me as intrigued about Racquel Welch as it did about Note Vanille. I had not tried the fragrance during its first release but I remember how it was missed by many vanilla lovers. Now that the article argues this is how Welch’s skin smells, I imagine a tanned, bronze skin on which Note Vanille shines because it has amber note too..thanks so much for the wonderful and generous draw. I am in the US

  • As a Vanilla lover, Tammy has sent me over the edge with her review! I need it now the way that I need oxygen!!! I’m excited that a vanilla exists that doesn’t smell like a cookie that you baked in your mom’s kitchen. I am also curious about the licorice note. I live in the US and thanks for the opportunity with this draw! 🙂

  • Just lately I have decided to explore vanilla perfumes, so this post couldn’t have come at a better time, especially since Note Vanillee is “the finest vanilla fragrance I have ever experienced”. It also helps that there has been no M Micallef perfume that I haven’t liked to one degree or another. My favorite is still Ylang. The bottles are gorgeous. I’m in the USA.

  • I can not believe that Note Vanillee was re-released, always wanted to test it but never got the chance. Note Vanillee previously been released as a women fragrance and now as unixes and according to this article the scent does not changed in anything comparing the previous release, this means that the genre is just for marketing. My favorite fragrance is M.Micallef The N ° 1 – Exclusively for Osswald, one of the best scents I smelled in my life.
    I’m in the USA

  • Well, that was positively visceral!
My favorite M. Micallefs are Gaiac and Avant Garde.
    I am in the US.

  • My favorite part of the review was the surprise Jasmine sillage! I now want to spray on my decant and test it out =) My favorite Micallef is Gaiac and I’m just waiting to see if Note Vanillee will beat it. I’m in Taiwan.

  • This review was as seducing as young Raquel Welch! Now I definitely want to try Note Vanillee. I enjoy M Micallefs Ylang in gold on summer nights.
    Living in Germany.

  • Lovely review dear Tammy thank you! I enjoyed reading about this rare M.Micallef perfume creation Note Vanillee, and got really excited once I read about the notes indicating that this rare aromatic beauty is not a gourmand but a deeply sensual perfume, sexy, and glamorous but not cheap! A reminder of how Rachel Welch’s skin would smell, or of any Mediterranean beauty would smell like Bardot or Sophia Loren.
Amazed by the notes vanilla, sandalwood, cognac, top quality licorice, amber and a whiff of jasmine. Yes definitely this is a rare beauty made for people who can appreciate it.
Thank you for the lovely review once more and for the generous draw, truly lucky the one who will have the honor to sniff and even more to wear this rare masterpiece. Unfortunately I never had the honor to even sample one of the creations from M.Micallef House.

  • The notes description sounds amazing- the accord of vanilla, sandalwood and licorice; honeyed pipe tobacco and cognac, ghostly jasmine sillage…yes please! I have been craving vanilla perfumes increasingly over the winter, this sounds wonderful.
I have never tried a Micallef perfume but this sounds like an excellent place to start! I live in Canada.

  • The review really brought the notes to life, the usual comforting Vanilla, Cognac, Tobacco and Amber notes, rich and luscious , tempered with Licorice and Jasmine. Would really like to try this.

My favorite scent from the Micallef line is Gaiac. I live in Singapore.

  • I thought the interview was so intriguing, And the interview described this heavenly fragrance.
My favorite m Micallef fragrance is spicy for him.
My name is James from America.

  • Mmm what a luxurious list of notes. I love the connection between perfume and classic bombshells – there’s something truly elegant about a woman wearing the right fragrance. I’ve yet to try anything by M.Micallef but this fragrance seems like a great place to start 🙂 I’m a gourmand lover, but not anything overly sweet. This sounds just right with the sandalwood and tobacco notes. I’m in the US.

  • I enjoyed the Raquel Welch pictures (I admit it). I hope my nose can detect the cognac note. My favorite Micallef is Gaiac right now. USA

  • This is my absolute favorite fragrance of all times. The descriptions of how the fragrance changes over the course of the wearing is why I like this fragrance so much. I also like the comment about spraying her bedsheets and not wanting to ever wash them. This is the best fragrance ever made. Thank you so much. I’m in the U.S..

  • Mrs. MacDonald says:

i wish, and have always wished, that i was one of those women who’s skin just naturally smelled heavenly. i’m sure if i had this my dreams would come true, somewhat…would love to have this! i’m in Canada 🙂

  • Very nice review, I have really enjoyed to read the whole article. I have never tried any of M Micallef perfume, but from the review, sounds incredibly good. Thanks for the draw. I live in Europe.

  • As I was reading I felt like I was smelling this. Vanilla as it is is already a personal favorite note. Wouldn’t I love to be chosen for this big generous bottle. My favorite M Micallef is Nasreen. USA 🙂

  • Nice review!!!I really love vanilla!!I live in Greece.I havent yet the opportunity to try any other perfumes of M Micallef house.

  • A sultry gourmand without being overly sweet but sexy, sounds like perfection to me.. Oh and the dry down sounds divine. I would love to see just which notes a special friends skin would pick up with this one… Of course it would have to be shared from my skin rather than a spritz 😉 So grateful that this one has returned to the amazing lineup of M Micallef. I am a registered US reader and thanks for the great opportunity on this one…

  • Great review for sure. Note Vanillee should really be a perfect scent for me because to be considered one of the best vanilla based fragrance by a Cafleurebon is not that easy . I would love to try Note Vanillee because until now the best vanilla I’ve ever tasted was Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille so if Note Vanillee is as good as SDV or better then I’m already in love. As always M.Micallef bottles are always magnificent and my favorite fragrance of M.Micallef is Le Parfum Couture no doubt.
    USA 🙂

  • Iuno Feronia says:

I love a perfume beeing all Glamour. Vanilla with liquorice, cognac, amber…. wonderful composition. I haven’t a Micallef perfume yet but I would love to have this precious object. I live in the EU, Austria.

    Thanks for the draw!!!

  • Note Vanillee is indeed full of warm and sensuous glamour! All golden, glowing and decadent! It is by far my favorite from M. Micallef and I would dearly love to own a bottle! I live in Finland.

  • This is definitely a grown up vanilla. I love all things vanilla, from ice cream to icing on cakes. However, I do not want to smell like that when wearing a vanilla fragrance. This is a real treat and I’ve enjoyed my sample that I recently acquired. I also love M Micallef perfumes. I have a few samples of different creations and I own the Mon Parfum, which I would have to say is my favorite. Although, it is hard to pick one, I must admit. the bottles are beautiful too.

The review was totally on point. Picking out the different dimensions as the Note Vanillee does its thing. What a generous offer too! I would love this. I’m in US and registered. Thanks.

  • bunchofpants says:

Very interesting about the sillage persisting in Tammy’s home. She does indeed make Notes Vanillee sound intoxicating. Alas, I have yet to try any M Micallef scents. Perhaps that can change soon! I’m in USA.

  • I adore not too sweet vanilla note in perfumes, looking forward to tyying this one!
My favorite M. Micallef fragrance is Aoud Gourmet.

    Thanks for the draw! USA

  • Note Vanillee sounds like a very complex vanilla scent, which is not too sweet. The review makes it sound gorgeous and very seductive. Love to try it! I’m in EU. Thanks for this lovely draw and wonderful review!

  • Like so many I love vanilla. Though I probably dislike more vanilla perfumes than I like, being very picky about what vanilla I like – and that being my reason for finding this review very interesting and curious about Note Vanillee. Liquorice and cognac makes it ever more interesting. And then jasmine… (this is giving me withdrawal symptoms, I need to smell a vanilla perfume now)
As for a favorite from the house, I keep repeating myself, I fear: haven’t tried any yet. Keeping my fingers crossed this might be my chance to smell a Micallef fragrance!
    I’m in the EU/Sweden.

  • Super interesting take on vanilla, would love to try it, especially because of the phantom licorice component you found. And who wouldn’t want to know what Raquel Welch’s skin smelled like, in anyone’s estimation 🙂

  • I am a vanilla lover in all it’s different facets so am intrigued by this one after reading Tammy’s review and mention of the licorice note in it. I haven’t tried many Micallef perfumes but of the ones I’ve tried Vanille Marine is my favorite. I am in the U.S.

  • I remember trying this years ago and liking it very much. Thank you for the olafactory memory. I wasn’t aware it had been discontinued. My favorite is a Gardenia one I have (it’s old, I think it has been discontinued). Thanks fo the draw. USA.

  • Great review that made me travel in my memory. I still never tested a perfume M.Micallef but every review I read here in Cafleurebon I am becoming more willing to test. The notes of Note Vanillee sounds me intoxicating.
    I’m in the US.

  • Wow I’m a total vanilla lover, so this sounds incredible to me. I’ve never tried any fragrances from this house, but I certainly know they make incredible scents. I’m in Canada and thanks for the draw

  • girasole638 says:

Note Vanillee sounds wonderful – I appreciated Tammy’s mention of the licorice note (and her precision – I distinguish between different types of licorice smells, too!). That in combination with the vanilla sounds like a match made in heaven. I’m so glad this scent was brought back and would love to have the chance to try it. I’ve not tested a M.Micallef scent yet but Note Vanillee, Hiver and Automne sound delicious! In in the US

  • It is indisputable the quality M.Micallef puts in their fragrances. Note Vanillee was always a very glamorous fragrance which unfortunately had been discontinued and fortunately we now have the pleasure and the opportunity to check it again. Tammy’s review demonstrates this glamor behind this fragrance. I have many fragrances of M.Micallef that I love but Aoud Gourmet now is my favorite.
    In in the US

  • The mix of vanilla and licorice sounds absolutely divine. This sounds like the perfect cold weather scent. It seems to have a warming effect. I’m also a fan of the bottle design. The only one I’ve tried has been Gaiac, and it’s obviously amazing!

    I’m a Canadian reader.

  • The bit about the “phantom” jasmine got me thinking… I am hard to impress when it comes to vanilla, but the extra facets in Notes Vanilee sound quite pleasing, given the high praise I’m seeing lavished on M. Micallef! I’ve never tried a perfume from this line. I’m in the US, thanks for the draw.

  • I want to float around on an opulent cloud of vanilla!!! I have heard such good things about this line, but never had the opportunity to try. One can never have too much vanilla.

  • Vanilla is such a warm and inviting scent. I have numerous vanilla based fragrance, and also quite a few candles. The aroma does a great job at relaxing me, not to mention, makes it smell wonderful as well. Thank you for the draw and I’m international (Toronto).
