Penhaligon’s The Impudent Cousin Matthew (Alberto Morillas) & Penhaligon’s The Ingénue Cousin Flora (Christophe Raynaud) Reviews + Citrus Cocktails Draw

Launched in 2016 and expanding fast, Penhaligon's Portraits Collection has just been enriched with its 13th and 14th member: the twin characters – and scents – by the names The Impudent Cousin Matthew and The Ingénue Cousin Flora. For those unfamiliar with Penhaligon's Portraits (“a tribute to the English spirit", according to the brand), each fragrance of the collection refers to, and is inspired by, a fictional character belonging to a universe not unlike a British upper-class soap opera. As one can see from the detailed, humorous bios of these characters at the brand's site, they are linked to one another by blood relations, marriages, affairs or other passions…

The fragrances are hosted in sturdy, luxurious bottles, and each one's impeccable, heavy golden-tone metal cap is in the shape of an animal head (each animal reflects the essence of the respective human character). Packaged in boxes beautifully illustrated by artist Kristjana S. Williams, Penhaligon's Portraits are a real ornament to look at; the scents themselves are of high quality, with the first twelve releases ranging from spicy/woody to rich floral, and from boozy to leathery compositions. For the first time Penhaligon's adds two fresh, youthful, citrus-dominated fragrances to its Portraits Collection. Although The Impudent Cousin Matthew is being marketed as a men's fragrance, and The Ingénue Cousin Flora as women's, these two “citrus cocktails" are to be shared, and enjoyed, by everyone.

Penhaligon’s The Impudent Cousin Matthew’s bio informs us that the trouble with him is that he always seems to be at the wrong place, the wrong time: “He's never far away when things go awry. Educated, he gallantly takes the blame without contestation and is mildly surprised to cause such a nuisance for the actions of his delightful twin sister, Flora. And so he contemplates the sky, a dandelion, or a muddy gate for hours, to forget the latest bother with Nanny. He really can’t remember putting dead frogs in her bed, but if Flora says he did, why argue…?”. Matthew is used to taking the blame for sister Flora's mischief, for he knows they have roles: “he's naughty, she's nice.”

Composed by Master Perfumer Alberto Morillas, Penhaligon’s The Impudent Cousin Matthew opens in the good-natured, easy-going manner of a delightfully breezy, refined Cologne Intense. Juicy mandarin, invigorating lemon and green/woody petitgrain are spiced up by a touch of cardamom; it's only a matter of minutes before the highly aromatic heart emerges, with notes of juniper, cypress and possibly other woods. The audacious, cheeky aspect of Matthew’s personality is represented by a rich, earthy patchouli base (resembling vetiver a lot), which provides depth, power and a long drydown. Mr. Morillas is undoubtedly a specialist of fresh scents, so it’s no surprise that Cousin Matthew is such a highly enjoyable, technically accomplished fragrance, with intriguing contrasts between juiciness and earthiness, luminosity and darker undertones. Listed Notes: Mandarin, Petitgrain, Patchouli.

The Ingénue Cousin Flora, on the other hand, appears to be the wide-eyed innocent of the family: “courteous to the old, punctual for her riding lessons and a smiling angel around her ma-ma. Always a most valuable witness to the mischief of her twin brother Matthew, Flora is diligent in her reporting, and aims to be as helpful as she can”. However, there's more to Flora than meets the eye: “Her one true virtue, the meticulousness with which she hides her own guilty trail… But ask her brother, her twin. She's the master of spin!”.

Perfumer Christophe Raynaud created a citrus delight that opens with slightly tart mandarin and sweet bergamot, aromatically enhanced by touches of clove, mint and petitgrain. A comforting base of silky musk and ambery ambroxan emerges after the first ten minutes, but doesn't completely take over; the citrus effect in Cousin Flora lasts even longer than in Cousin Matthew, creating a beautiful contrast between acidity and creaminess. And even if the woody/musky base doesn't really seem enough to account for Cousin Flora’s hidden mischievous nature, that doesn't make the scent less vivacious, energetic or joyful. Listed Notes: Citrus Cocktail, Musk, Ambroxan.

Sunny, breezy and ebullient, Penhaligon’s The Impudent Cousin Matthew and The Ingénue Cousin Flora combine an admirably long citrus cocktail effect with warm and woody bases; they are meant to brighten one's day, and they indeed succeeded in uplifting my spirits.

Disclaimer: I'd like to thank Penhaligon's for my bottle of The Ingénue Cousin Flora and my travel spray of The Impudent Cousin Matthew. The opinions are my own.

"…green/woody petitgrain…with notes of juniper, cypress…" Pettigrain, jumiper and cypress – three of my favorite notes. "…clove, mint and petitgrain" sounds delightfully well-balanced. I'm excited to try these two. I own Much Ado About the Duke, which remains my all-time-favorite rose scent. I live in Nashville, TN.

I have none of the portrait fragrances.  I do love the sound of The Ingenue Cousin Flora as I love the idea of clove, bergamot , and mint together. My favorite Penahligon is Malabah.  Thanks for a most interesting and informative review and thanks also for the draw.  I'm in the USA

The juxtaposition between the twins’ personalities is the best element of this inspired review. Although the two fragrances are both fresh and citrus-like, I can imagine these as two completely different creations. I am not familiar with any of the perfumes of the Portrait Collection, but I like Penhaligon’s Artemisia, which I own, and Elizabethan Rose. I also love the Violet lip balm. I live in the USA.

  • Penhaligon's portraits collection is a favorite of mine. Much Ado About the Duke is truly beautiful. I'm eager to try these new additions. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! USA

  • I enjoyed reading the creative reviews especially that I haven't heard of these fragrances before. I chose The Ingénue Cousin Flora based on the descriptions in the article. I live in Romania, EU.

  • Just Add Light says:

Roaring Radcliff has always been my favourite from the brand, but I have to say that after smelling The Impudent Cousin Matthew, it deposed Lord George as #2.  What a fantastic green and soapy scent!  Definitely agree with Despina that the citruses hang on for longer in The Ingenue Cousin Flora, but I also get some mint in there too.  Loved the idea of layering the two – can't believe I didn't try that!  USA

  • This is a lovely and entertaining concept, to pair two perfumes like this. I love metaphors, and both the house's idea and Despina's review gravitate around the personification of these two fragrances. I haven't tested anything by Penhaligon's except their Ellenisia, but I have read about their creations a lot, so it would only make me happy to try these two. Thank you! From EU.

Wonderful breakdown of the Portraits collection and its first two fresh, citrusy fragrances. I have not yet been able to try a Penhaligon’s scent, so I hope I win. I’m in the USA.

  • I love the humor behind these two characters – absent minded and carefree cousin who can't' be bothered to dispute his naughty reputation plays nicely with the brilliant little mastermind with the face of innocence. The fresh citrus blends are perfect for this cheeky pair, and I'd love to experience this whimsical duo! Thank you for the opportunity to win, live in the US.

I love the use of spice in this series (cardamom, clove, mint, etc.), in addition of course to the fanciful "backstory" of each creation.  I own The Ruthless Countess Dorothea (ginger, cinnamon) and would like to try the new offerings.  They should include a "family tree" with each bottle so we can keep track!  Thank you for this generous draw, I live in the US.

  • I have never had a chance to try anything from Penhaligon's. How wonderful bottles these are… I mean the tops of he bottles. So cute and beautiful. And these fragrances also sounds very nicely. I live in Europe. Thank you for the chance.

  • I like the way the review talked about the citrus notes as well as the "personalities" of the fragrances. I like many Penhaligon's fragrances; my favorite of the Portraits is Lady Blanche, but my overall Penhaligon's favorites are Blasted Bloom and Ostara. I live in the US; thanks for the draw!

  • Great reading. I think The Impudent Cousin Matthew would be my piece of cake. Mandarin, patchouli, petitgrain…what’s not to like? 🙂 Thank you for the chance, i am in the EU.

  • Great reading. The Impudent Cousin Matthew is right on my alley. Mandarine, patchouli, petitgrain…what’s not to like? plus Alberto Morillas the king of freshies. I would love to give it a try, thanks for the draw, i am in the EU.

  • I like Penhaligon's so much and have been looking forward to trying these new fragrances in the portrait collection. I love the delicate design of this collection and the story behind it. I currently have the Coveted Duchess Rose which was my favorite perfume in winter. I also own Juniper Sling and a discovery set of Penhaligon's including 10 * 2ml samples. My next bottle in Penhaligon's is gonna be Gardenia or Iris Prima. Both of them are beautiful. I'm living in the US. Thanks for the draw.

Penhaligon's The Impudent Cousin Matthew and The Ingenue Cousin Flora seem quite different from the other in the Portrait Collection, most of whom have warm compositions and better suited to warm weather. Wonder how these fresh compositions stand among niche collections. My favorite from Brand is Sartorial. US.

  • Despina's article is fun because the fragrances are relatives to each other.  I guess they are related because of the Portrait collection. I would love to try because I have not sampled any of Penhaligon fragrances.  Thank you for the chance.  USA

  • I most enjoed the detail that went into describing the fragrances, they sound great! My favorite from the house is love potion no.9 haven't had a chance to try this line yet. I live in North Carolina US

  • Oh I like so many of Penhaligon's perfumes but don't have any. These ones seem to be perfect for upcoming hot weather…love the beautiful design of travel sprays. I am in Germany

  • Would love to try this citrusy sounding The Impudent Cousin Matthew. Sounds great as the weather warms. From Penhaligons I like many, but one I come back to is Quercus. US

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

I love the creative use of art in these reviews… plus the mention of Flora being uplifting, I could certainly use something to lift me up going into spring. My current favorite Penhaligons is Elixir – it's the only one I own but i really love it. I live in the US!

  • Ivan.napoleon says:

Sartorial always my fav. Id love to win thsi! Great review!

    Miami Florida Thanks

  • I have never sampled anything from Penhaligon's as of yet, but have browsed their website looking for fragrances to add to my wish list. The Impudent Cousin Matthew sounds delightful. I love a large majority of citrusy scents, and have been on a quest to find that really good one that could be a signature summer fragrance. Satorial sounds great too, being a sweeter barbarshop fragrance.  Thank you for the chance at the drawing. USA.

  • I love these fragrances! I own two. I enjoyed hearing about the new ones and would squeal to try them. I'm in USA.

  • Despina's descriptions are funny and very relatable as the two fragrances come out as actual cousins. I haven't yet tried any of Penhaligon's fragrances but I'm ready for Cousin Flora. I live in Texas USA

  • I didn't  know Penhaligons had a portrait series let alone they're  on their 13th and 14th in the series. And I don't  have major experience with Pehaligons but Cousin Flora sounds more appealing than Cousin Matthew. Here In California

  • doveskylark says:

The anglophile in me loves this Portrait concept. I love the stateliness of the bottles and the charming back stories. The Impudent Cousin Matthew has all the notes I like, especially the mandarin and cedar. It sounds joyful and alive.

I haven't tried anything from the Portrait's colletion, but I have tried Sartorial from Penhaligon. It's very classy.

    I live in the USA.

  • These both sound so pretty. I am especially drawn to The Ingénue Cousin Flora. I haven't tried anything from the Portrait's Collection. There's a Penhaligan store in the Paramus Mall that I've been dying to go to. It's a 2 hour drive from my house but it will be worth it to finally be able to smell all of their gorgeous creations.

    I live in the USA.

  • I got to try some of the earlier Penhaligon's family portrait scents because I lived near a store, but since then I've moved and haven't had the pleasure. I find it a really appealing collection. In this case I think I might like Cousin Matthew's scent the best. It sounds a bit more complicated. I'm in USA

  • I love Penhaligons, although I haven’t been able to try as many of the portrait collection as I’d like. Lavandula and Iris Prima are my favorites from the regular line. Despina makes both of these scents sound appealing but it’s her description of Cousin Flora that really shines. I would love to try them both and am in the US. Many thanks!

  • fleurdetilleul says:

I love the bios they created for these fragrances! So creative and fun!

Despina writes in a clear and straigh-forward manner and doesn't get tangled up in metaphors. She makes it easy for me to make my own impressions based on the facts she gives on the fragrances she reviews.

My favourite fragrance from the Portrait Collection is The Bewitching Yasmine.

    I live in Europe.

  • I'm all for Matthew, tho Flora sounds lovely as well. This collection sounds wonderful. l, and I enjoyed learning about it. Thank you for the review shad the draw!  In the US

  • Such a fun review of cousin perfumes. I haven’t tried the portrait collection but I loved Iris prima.I love Penhaligon and citrus so please enter me

The Portaits Collection from Penhaligon's is such a wonderful and fun concept. The bios for each character, the bottles and the artwork are marvelous and unique.

Loved Despina's review. She developed the relatives concept and made it even more fun. I'm always glad to find perfumes that uplifts my spirits the same way it did for Despina.

I haven't had the chance to try anything from the Portrait Collection, but Sartorial, Vaara, Peoneve and Esprit du Roi are some of my favorites.

Thank you for the chance !

    I'm in Romania, EU.

  • Enjoyed the read. Not much experience with Penhaligon Parfums. Just recently I’ve smelled Hammam. They seem to have good fragrances though. Many have said good about them. Like to get a chance to check out their Portraits collection. Thanks, US
