Parfumerie Generale Querelle: Un Parfum Vert Contraire

Talk about controversial and subversive.

You take one young, brilliant, intellectual chemist / perfumer of exquisitely beautiful physicality [Pierre Guillaume, naturellement!]-

One novel of immense brutality and eroticism written by a dissolute legend

[Querelle de Brest-1947, Jean Genet] –

The last film made by troubled, dissipated Rainer Werner Fassbinder, based on that novel [Querelle– 1982] –

And the darkest, most intense, sultry materials possessing potent gender-bending sensuality…

There you have it.

Querelle.

This masterwork- and I really perceive it as such- is an approach/ avoidance fragrance for many.

It seethes with complexity; if it were a color, it would be the darkest green imaginable, tinged with black.

Citrus notes open this composition, rapidly pursued by a fiendish Iranian black cumin note- both sweaty and seductive.

Myrrh and cinnamon add spicy, resinous depth.

Powdered rose, reveals my “Collection Sur Invitation” envelope …

Where?

Tonka bean subtly cavorts with fine Haitian vetiver; it is this vetiver which one feels throughout the development of Querelle.

Incense, oakmoss, and ambergris complete the smoky, mossy depths of this splendidly perverse fragrance.

Querelle– needless to say-

Is not for everyone.

But for those who crave the mystery of forbidden desire and mutinous beauty-

This is your thing, my friends.

  • I have to try it when I have the chance, because in perfume, green is my colour 🙂  (with the exception of galbanum).

  • Oh.  Oh, oh, oh.
That said 😉 , I have all kinds of questions.  No, two.  No, one, and an observation.  (Am I a bit flustered?)  The observation is…that vetiver plays differently with me at different times.  I can like it very much, or be something just sort of repulsed.  Which makes it perhaps quite appropriate for this concoction, it would seem.
As a deep dark green fan, I would love to try this period, but also to be able to benchmark it with Djedi.  Not that I am expecting sameness, but there is something in your evocation (dark green, depth, not easy) that makes me think that if Querelle is a good something, that I might understand each a little more by knowing them both.
Tonka, you say?  Sounds like the something that could be responsible for revealing a PG heart.  Yes/no?

  • I had a bottle of this a couple of years ago and gave it to a lonely  friend.  He is now married and I am without my bottle of Querelle.  Now I want/need another bottle!  You reminded me of the magic that is Querelle (who knew Pierre was such a dish?).  Yum.   Big hig to you Chaya!!!

  • Chaya, as always, written from the heart! I've not experienced this perfume but your review makes me want to run to the nearest vendor! Sounds provocative and intriguing!! Love you!

  • Ida, a most compelling article.   I was with you all the way along  this evocative road of intrigue.  Seldom do I read a review that makes me WANT,  but this is it, woman!
