Ormonde Jayne Ta’if, Parfums de Nicolai Rose Oud and Serge Lutens La Fille de Berlin +Tournament of Roses Part 1

Cleopatra and Antony Lawrence Alma Tadema

Welcome to the CaFleureBon Tournament of Roses!!! Ever since Cleopatra welcomed Marc Antony into her  floating boudoir on the Nile, whose floor was covered with a foot and half of rose petals, rose perfumes have enticed and enthralled lovers (and lovers of perfumes) throughout the ages.

During the next week the Editors and Contributors of CaFleureBon will choose their favorite rose perfumes in honor of Valentine’s Day. Let the games begin!!!

Ormonde Jayne Ta’if (2004): A couple of years ago I held my own Tournament of Roses to find “The Rose” for my nose. I tested well over a hundred niche rose perfumes. I completely geeked out and created a spreadsheet to organize them by notes and perfumers. The result was the knowledge that rose was too versatile an ingredient in the hands of expert perfumers and I’d have to accept there’d be at least a dozen rose perfumes I couldn’t live without. Ormonde Jayne Ta’if composed by Linda Pilkington announced its intention of making the final cut the first time I smelled it. The Ta’if rose grown in Saudi Arabia delivers a deep, rich aroma. She is not a shy flower and Ormonde Jayne Ta’if is not a shy perfume. As I inhaled its rose, beautifully blended with notes of dates, orange flowers and jasmine, my mind drifted to my travels in the Mahgreb and the Levant. The engaging opening is spicy, sweet and chewy in turn. As it wears,  the ta’if rose and her attendant florals emerge in harmony to finally settle into a deep oriental base. Ormonde Jayne Ta’if is a dream-state rose. Notes: Pink Pepper, Saffron, Dates, Rose Oil, Freesia, Orange Flower Absolute, Jasmine, Broom, Amber, Tonka Bean

Nicolai Rose Oud (2013): During my quest I was very much the Goldilocks of rose perfumes: one was too green, another too powdery, but  Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur Rose Oud was just right. Patricia de Nicolaï created a beautiful, confident, statuesque perfume. I dare anyone not to feel as royal as the queen of flowers herself when wearing Rose Oud. The delicious sweet/tart raspberry opening gives way to the rose-dominated floral heart. The word “oud” in the name hints at the oriental through line that emerges and lingers through the woody and animalic base that rumbles on your skin. A “rosiental chypre” one could call it. Rose Oud bears witness to Madame Nicolaï 's mastery in creating a complex rose perfume with intense longevity and imperious projection. It’s as if the fragrance notes are dancing courtiers clad in silks and velvets winding around the opulent and majestic Queen Rose in the center, her panther on a jeweled leash. Notes: Raspberry, Davana, Artemesia, Osmanthus, Coriander, Rose, Lily-of-the-Valley, Agar Wood, Amber, Musk, Styrax, Castoreum, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Vanilla, Oakmoss

Serge Lutens La Fille de Berlin (Christopher Sheldrake) 2013: A dark beauty, this rose has got it going on: jammy, winey, juicy – La Fille de Berlin smells almost edible at first. But as the fragrance unfolds, this jeune fille proves to be a sexy, urban sophisticate. La Fille de Berlin is structured beautifully, with a saturated rose and suggestions of green thorns, ripe red berries and moist soil. But it’s perfumer Chrisopher Sheldrake’s brilliant use of violet that really sets La Fille de Berlin apart: the flower adds just the barest trace of old school face powder while darkening the rose into burgundy velvet. My favourite rose scent of the last decade.

  • PdN Rose Oud appeals to me… because I’m a PdN fan! New York is my favorite from the house and I would love to try more!

I love Fille de Berlin and have two bottles of it. I have not smelled the other two. I am more intrigued by OJ Ta’if since it does not only incorporate Taif rose from Arab region but also seeks inspiration from Middle East in other ways through notes such as dates. My choice is OJ Ta’if. I am in US.

  • I’m mesmerized by Marianne’s description of Rose Oud from Parfums de Nicolaï – that “rosiental chypre of imperious projection ” sounds like something I’d absolutely adore.
I’d be thrilled to win it, thank you and best from France.

  • I would love to try Ormonde Jayne Ta’if as i have never tried this line before. Fille de Berlin is a particular love of mine – its my power perfume when i need extra mental help! I love the blood red metallic aspect of the rose in it.
I’m the UK and thanks for the chance to win.

  • I tried Rose Oud before and I loved it! I haven’t smelled Taif. I’d love to win a bottle of Rose Oud! Thanks for the draw. I live in France.

  • All 3 of these rose scents sound gorgeous, lovely and different with only the rose in common. I LOVE a rose oud combo and Marianne has me wanting to having to have this Nicolai Rose Oud an oriental chypre but with the rose and oud and the royal feeling of it I would Love to win this . Thank-You For this chance Parfum de Nicolai USA

  • I keep hearing such ravishing reviews for Ormonde Jayne Ta’if Rose. Although I love the rose and oud combo so beloved in perfumery, it would be amazing to try a rose dominant fragrance composed in a completely different manner, especially one that features the ta’if rose like in this Ormonde Jayne masterpiece. It would be such an honor if I was able to win a bottle of Ta’if Rose. Thank you all for such a generous giveaway! I’m in Oregon, USA.

  • VerbenaLuvvr says:

The spicy and sweet ta’if rose appeals to me most, thus I would select Ormonde Jayne Ta’if. I live in the US.

  • Grandiflora says:

The Valentine’s Day Rose from today’s Tournament that appeals to me most is the Ta’if rose! I’m drawn to the Saudi Arabian rose that “delivers a deep, rich aroma”. I would like to win the bottle of Ormonde Jayne Ta’if. I’m in the U.S.

  • Since I haven’t tried any perfumes from Ormonde Jayne, I would choose Ta’if. I’m usually drawn to woody unisex fragrances, but the dates and pink pepper notes sound wonderful. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! USA

  • What a great idea! A tournament of roses! I like all three, but Ormonde Jayne Ta’if and Rose Oud are the two Like best. I live in the US.

  • RobertNicolasB says:

Without a doubt, the “rosiental chypre” !!! The Nicolai Rose Oud sounds like an amazing blend. I’m in the U.S.

  • batandcamel says:

Ta’if sounds great. Would love to try a fragrance that mixes orange flowers with rose. I am from the USA and would like to try to win Ta’if.

  • I had a lovely time in two different Nicolai stores in Paris last summer, but did not smell Rose oud. (What’s my problem? Perhaps the oud scared me off in the summer). But reading about it here, it sounds so lovely. So I would like to try to win Rose Oud.

    I am in the USA.

  • All of these rose fragrances sound beautiful. I would love to win the Nicolai Rose Oud. I admire Mme. de Nicolai’s artistry very much. I’d love to at least smell like a queen, even if reality tells me I’m far from that. I live in California.

  • I never cared for the serge Lutens la fille de Berlin too dark but Ormonde Jayne rose Taif sounds great. I love how Marianne tookthe time to try so many

  • Dubaiscents says:

I used to have a bottle of Ta’if Rose but sold it because I don’t think it lasted well on my skin the hot weather in the Middle East. I wanted to love it since I often travelled to Saudi (but never made it to Taif, sadly). I have smelled Patricia’s Rose Oud and enjoyed her take on such a classic Middle Eastern combo, I would love a bottle of my own to bring back the memories of the place I lived for 11 years and recently had to leave. Can’t wait to see everyone else’s favorite rose scents! I am in the US.

  • I really like Ormonde Jayne Ta’if Rose because I’ve seem some reviews and I got interested.
    I live in USA.

  • Of the three rose scents, I seem to gravitate to Serge Lutens’ La Fille de Berlin. I would love to win, however, the Rose Oud by Prfums de Nicolai. As I’ve never sniffed either of the two presented, I have to go by the notes and I think the Rose Oud resonates more with me. Thanks for great reviews and for this lovely draw. I’m in the USA

  • We have La Fille de Berlin where I work in Houston and customers are always surprised at how this rose is presented. However, I love Ormonde Jayne, especially my “signature scent” Montabaco. I would love to get Ta’if. Live in the US.

  • I have always liked the combination of oud and rose, therefore I think Parfums de Nicolai’s Rose Oud would be perfect for me. I am in EU. Thanks!

  • I have Nicolai New York and they are beautiful. I met the rose in the Amouage Lyric perfume and I am happy to compare it with Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur Rose Oud. I’m from Poland.

  • Andreea Florica says:

The rose flavour it’s perfect for me, in my opinion it’s a match between me and the Parfums de Nicolai’s Rose.
I’m from EU. Good luck everyone!

  • I would love to try Rose Oud from Nicolai, love the description and is been a long time that i’m trying to explore Nicolai’s house offerings. Thanks for the chance, i am in the EU.

  • doveskylark says:

I’m a big fan of La Fille de Berlin. I love that it was inspired by Marlene Dietrich. I like to wear this fragrance while watching old movies…I’m not sure if I can get away with it in public–I love rose perfumes, but I’m not sure if they entirely match my chemistry. I take a chance wearing them, but that’s one I am willing to take.
I would choose Ta’if by Ormonde Jayne.
    I live in the USA.

  • To me Rose Oud by Nicolai is mostly appealing because I love all notes especially castoreum, patchouli, rose, oud, vanilla and oakmoss. Since it is described as a beautiful and confident scent, I’d be happy to win it and I’ll wear it to special occasions when I wanna feel that way. I live in Germany, Europe. Thanks!

  • Nice ari!
I am male and like rose very much, although many girls in my sround hate rose in perfumery.
I like discripton of not “shy” taif rose – Ormond JayneTa’if.
I would like to win Ormond JayneTa’if.

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Brilliant….A Tournament of Roses. I have pure Taif rose attar from the house of Abdul Samad Al Qurashi & I’ll say one of the best Taif roses I have smell in my life. Haven’t tried any of the rose based fragrance in the article, would like to win a bottle of “rosiental chypre” Parfums de Nicolai Rose Oud as it appealing to me more than the others mentioned in the article.
Thanks for the opportunity & generosity. Pakistan

  • I am curious about Rose Oud because I like this combination and also because I have not tested anything from Parfums de Nicolai and I think this one would be a nice start.

    EU

    Thanks!

  • The beautiful sounding rosiental chypre Parfums de Nicolai Rose Oud is the most appealing to me ! Have a wonderful day cafleurebon!

  • Wow! A great idea to do rose reviews for Valentines Day! I have had only one experience with a rose fragrance. It was a single note pink rose. I disliked it very much. Then I started watching fragrance reviews and learned how MANY different roses are out there! I would love to try something with a deep rose smell. I think the Parfums de Nicolai Rose Oud would be rich. Thank you for the chance! In the USA

  • For me, this is a Blind Tournament of Roses, but based on the ingredients, I’m betting my money on Rose Oud by Nicolai.

    I live in The Netherlands.

Thank you for the opportunity of reading amazing reviews, Ca Fleure Bon!

  • They all sound fabulous, but PdN Rose Oud appeals to me the most. Of course, I’d be happy to win any of the three! I’m in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

  • Love it when you do a series!! Looking forward to more in the “Tournament”. I like that Ta’if is a dream state kind of fragrance. I I did smell La Fille de Berlin when it first came out and it really impressed me. i used to think of rose fragrances for “old ladies”, maybe since these niche fragrance houses are trying daring creations, they are for everyone….or maybe my nose has finally matured. Thanks Marianne!!! I’d love to win Ta’if. USA.

  • I have tested both the Lutens and the Ormonde Jayne and liked the Ta´if a bit more. I would love to win the Rose Oud as i never sampled it before.
I live in Germany, so PdN would be a great scent to win. Thanks for the draw.

  • The tournament sounds fun! I’m looking forward to seeing all of the rose favorites! I would be interested in PDN Rose oud. I have been enjoying many roses these days. I enjoy Rose cut and Oud bouquet. Thank you for the chance to try one out. I live in the US.

  • How I love rose fragrances! I am drawn to the notes of Nicolai Rose Oud because I love the tart top notes of raspberry. That opening sounds fabulous!
    I live in the USA.

  • I love the beauty of roses, however, the scent does not always play well on my skin. I’m going to love the tournament in guiding me to some scents that I may have not tried. I admire the detailed and masterful work of PDN so Nicolai Rose Oud is my choice of the ones presented today.

  • Love the review of 3 very different rose scents, Serve Lutens La Fille Berlin appeals to me most, red raspberries and rose sound divine! I would love to win. Ormonde Jayne Ta’if ! I live in the USA!

  • Excellent descriptions! I would have to go with ta’if by ormand jane it is one of the most gorgeous rose fragrances I have ever tried. Rose is one of my favorite notes and I’m sure the parfums de Nicolai is good too. Thanks for the giveaway. I am in Arizona in the USA

  • Ormonde Jayne Ta’if has to be in my top 3 rose favorites. I hope to never be without it! I am a big fan of Parfums de Nicolai, but have never tried Rose Oud, and would love to. Thanks for the draw, I’m in the USA.

  • Who doesn’t love roses? All 3 – which I’ve never smelled – sound amazing for their different characteristics. And I enjoy all 3 houses too! If I won this generous drawing, I would select Ormonde Jane Ta’if only because I’ve heard so much about it from other perfumistas. Thank you for the opportunity! In the US.

  • La fille de Berlin is one of my favourite rose scents, I even have backup bottle. Would love to win Parfums de Nicolai Rose Oud.
Thank you for the draw, I’m in Russia

  • I’m familiar with 2 fragrances from this draw – Jayne Ta’if and La Fille de Berlin.I like both especially Jayne Ta’if . La Fille de Berlin is a a good fragrance too , but unlike Fille en Aiguilles , Chergui and Rahat Loukoum performance is bellow average on my skin.2-2.5 hrs of longevity with 30-40 min on projection and sillage.
Rose Oud by Parfums de Nikolai is the one i’de like to win.I’m not familiar with the brand (smelled only 2 ) , but New York Intense i really like.
    I do follow @cafleurebon, @spritzi_mcguillacutty @nicolaiparfums and @ormondejayne on IG.

  • I love the description of Ormonde Jayne Ta’if, and I have some attar of Taif roses which is amazing, so I would choose Ta’if. I live in the US. Thank you for the draw!

  • The both sound great. However, as much as I love the note of dates, Rose Oud has castoreum, which I dont think Ive smelled in a rose oud combo. Sounds interesting.
If I win, I’d like the Rose Oud.

Im in IL in the US. Thanks for the draw

  • I am a fan of Ta’if roses and the spices in Ormonde Jayne speaks to me the most. This line sold me on it: “The engaging opening is spicy, sweet and chewy in turn. As it wears, the ta’if rose and her attendant florals emerge in harmony to finally settle into a deep oriental base.” If I were to win I would choose Ormonde Jayne Ta’if. The others sound quite beautiful as well. Thanks for the draw and I live in the US! 🙂

  • Dorian Fischer says:

  • I never had a chance to smell Ormonde Jayne Ta’if , Serge Lutens La Fille de Berlin and Nicolai Rose Oud , so no comment will be made here,
My father signature scent is called New York and it’s made by Parfums de Nikolai.I do like it on guys over 45 and up.
At the moment i do not own any Ormonde Jayne fragrances.I had Tolu back in late 2014 -it was a gift from mom , but unfortunately for a short period of time , because my younger cousin broke the bottle – dropped it from the second floor of the house.Barely used like .. ~10ml of this gem…max before this happen. Her being 16 back then was the thing that saved fer from my wrath Lol.
Since i’m more familiar with Ormonde Jayne fragrances i presume Ta’if will suit me well.Rose , dates ,jasmine and orange flowers i like a lot Lol
    Thank you for the opportunity

  • Valentine Girl says:

I would love to win Ormonde Jayne Ta’if for the opportunity to travel the Maghreb via fragrance. USA resident.

  • Ormonde Jayne Ta’if sounds delectable! Pairing rose with orange blossoms, dates, and jasmine – I’d love to try this one. Writing from NC, USA. Thanks for the drawing!

  • Rose is one of my favorite notes, however I found relatively few that truly fit my tastes. Of the three above, I suspect Ta’if would be a true love for me. However, I do love Serge Lutens and oud too, so I would love the chance to test any of them. I am in the USA.

  • LadyoftheOakenForest says:

From the ones, Ormonde Jayne Ta’if is definitely the one that interests me the most- tested it a few years ago and loved it. Fille de Berlin is not my favourite from Lutens I must say, both Sa Majeste and Une Rose de Nuit are superior to it in my opinion. So would love to be entered for the Ormonde Jayne Ta’if. I am based in the UK. Thank you for another generous draw!

  • I have to admit I do know both houses by name , but I don’t own, or smelled even one fragrance from their catalogs. Guilty as charged. Saw a few YouTube video reviews mostly by mr Yara , and a few here but that’s it. Sorry I was referring Ormonde Jayne and Parfums de Nikolai . Of course I’m familiar with Serge Lutens . I would love to win Rose Oud because I do like the piramid and also the idea of “delicious sweet/tart raspberry opening “ + “woody animalic base “ Tnx to all involved in this generous giveaway, and of course Lauryn Beer for her reviews. It was fun and informative reading the beautiful history and breakdown on each rose fragrance…. I can tell though it was a labor of love choosing these particular ones to have in this Tournament of Roses! The Ormande Jane sounds Devine…. as I adore middle eastern scents , but Serge Lutens Berlin sounds delectable as well….I can say for sure I would not mind winning anything from these choices, any would be a lovely addition for my boudoir!

  • Rose Browning says:

Wow, I got so caught up in the roses , I forgot to say where I’m from …. that would US , SC. Thank you for the chance to experience one of these lovely fragrances!
