Ormonde Jayne Ta’if Elixir Review (Linda Pilkington) 2019 + Mata Hari Draw

Ormonde Jayne T'aif Elixir review

Mata Hari  via wiki

A mysterious rose meets a smoky oud in the dark alleys of a casbah. Shadowy, removed, both male and female, it’s a scent that that conjures ancient Arabian markets and elusive women. This is Ormonde Jayne Ta’if Elixir, a spicy, woody scent dabbed with a plush rose and changeable oud that keep you guessing where and when they will turn up.

Founder and perfumer Linda Pilkington takes her luxuriant Ta’if and smudges it up with dry-as-a-bone-Cambodian oud. The opening surprised me. Knowing the rich, rosy confection that is Ormonde Jayne Ta’if, I expected to be greeted with a shower of petals, syrupy orange blossom and jasmine rolling around with some frisky spice. Ta’if Elixir starts with a big twist of pink pepper and a dusting of saffron. The spices hang in the air as oud, with assertive facets of burnished wood and hookah smoke, steps forward. Accompanied by a subtle hint of dates, and the concord grape sweetness of broom, the oud develops in several directions: oaky, medicinal, smoky.

For these first few moments, the rose in Ta’if Elixir plays cherchez la femme. But then, just as I am left wondering where that ta’if went, she makes her entrance, draped in the veils of the harem. Gauzy rose petals peel off delicately as orange blossom sweeps in. The sweetness begins to amplify like the buzz of bees. At this point, different facets of the rose comes through; a swipe of lipstick, fresh young blooms from the garden.

There’s a secretive quality to the middle section. The high-quality, complex oud that Pilkington uses keeps switching directions. This oud smells, at different times, like old library walls, pouch tobacco, torch smoke, hair tonic. It adds a classy restraint and warmth to more full-blown versions of this dynamic duo, where more generically medicinal oud is amped up to compete with an enormous, hair-teased rose. Don’t get me wrong; I have a fondness for those perfumes, too. But Ormonde Jayne brings something different to the petal-strewn table: a classy, warm fragrance that’s a pas de deux between rich, fluffy rose and spiced oud, teetering between masculine and feminine, never quite settling on either. Ormonde Jayne Ta’if Elixir is romantic in the way of a Mahler symphony: sweeping, changeable never quite telling you the whole story.

Notes: Pink Pepper, saffron, dates, rose oil, freesia, orange blossom absolute, jasmine, broom, amber, Cambodian oud.

  • I love Ormonde Jayne Ta’if, so Ta’if Elixir sounds incredible with the addition of oud! Love to me smells like roses and vanilla – comfort and beauty 🙂 Thank you for the draw, live in the US.

Oud, spices and hookah smoke. Oud is one of my all time favorite fragrance notes. Being from East Africa I’ve smelled my share of middle eastern perfumes and would love to experience something new and unique. This sounds like a masterpiece. Thank you for the chance to win this.

  • As a rose lover I am interested in trying this creation that includes oud, amber, and freesia, another scent note I truly love. I still haven’t tried any fragrances from the line so I better get started! I live in the USA.

  • I am absolutely having an oud moment right now, and the addition of dates and saffron is quite intriguing! Truly unisex fragrances are hard to find; it’s a rare treat to find a fragrance my husband and I both equally enjoy wearing. This might just be it!
In my mind, the smell of romance must be spicy, vanillic, somewhat animalic, all-encompassing and breathtaking. Brash and uninhibited, it leaves no question of whether or not it is there for you and there…well…for YOU!
This would be my first Ormonde Jayne, though I’ve heard great things about their perfumes.

I love the notes such as saffron, dates and pink pepper so am sure it owuld be one of a hell fragrance which i want to try.

I love Ormonde Jayne Ta’if, so Ta’if Elixir sounds incredible with the addition of oud! However my fav from the house Montabaco coz of my love for tobacco notes.

My Fav romantic fragrtance is TOM FORD – Black Orchid.

  • I was instantly reeled in when I heard of its hookah smoke scent characteristics. I enjoy the way niche brands continue to push the barrier of scent accords and combinations. I have not smelled any of the releases from this house. (Commenting from FL, USA)

  • WOW! How exciting does this sound? My favorite part of the review is the description of the feverish journey. I own Woman and would love to try this. I live in the USA.

  • Nice review. I love the original Taif and this new one with oud in the mix is wonderful. Love that the oud changes shape and mixes differently with the phases of the perfume. Thanks for the draw. My favorite is Ormonde Elixir a new aquisition.

  • I loved how Lauren said it was a fluffy rose smudged with oud. Masculine and feminine. My favorite Ormonde Jayne is Amber Royal and nawab de Oudh. I will check lucky scent to see if they sell a sample but I hope I win

  • Bryant Worley says:

I really appreciated the symphony reference, as the way the fragrance ‘notes’ are described as coming together is wonderful and makes it seem like Ormonde Jayne has created something that will be quite smellorific – – gauzy rose petals peel off, orange blossom sweeps in. The sweetness builds up. And the rose and oud are ever changing, as if the conductor is bringing in different nuances, approaching the crescendo. I want this! Unfortunately, I have not tried any Ormonde Jayne fragrances yet.

  • I tried Ta’if as a sample a few years ago and I remember. very glamorous and feminine perfume. I love roses and oud and smoke are great supports. I like a lot of the OJ scents. OJ Woman is a favorite. I live in the US

  • Joan Mansbach says:

Ta’if is my signature fragrance. I’ve read about Ta’if Elixir and I adore the concept of “smudging up” this luscious, feminine, chiffon-like rose. The addition of spiced oud creates an exciting, mysterious, invigorated personality for Ta’if. It’s as though the best of both fragrance worlds combine to elevate this exceptional scent to a totally new plateau. Cannot wait to try this.

  • I haven’t had the chance to try any Ormonde Jayne fragrances yet, but everything about this description speaks to me: smoke, tobacco, libraries, rose. I’m in the US.

  • I would love to try Ta’if Elixir. It sounds amazing, love this”Ormonde Jayne Ta’if Elixir is romantic in the way of a Mahler symphony: sweeping, changeable never quite telling you the whole story.” USA

  • I have not tried and is the Ormonde Jayne scents. The Ta’if Elixir sounds amazing, with the many changing levels that it goes through. I love smokey, oud, and rose with the hint of sweetness. Midwest USA

  • Shamrock1313 says:

Wow – fruits, oud and rose? Sounds so good – beautiful description. Haven’t tried Ormande yet.

  • Shelly wolf says:

Smokey, check, tobacco, check, and “ classy, warm fragrance that’s a pas de deux between rich, fluffy rose and spiced oud, teetering between masculine and feminine”, extra checks, I love hearing in is undecided between masculine and feminine. I love masculine scents but feel I can’t pull them off often. A rose that is not too girlie sounds lovely.

  • wallygator88 says:

Oud/rose/saffron is generally a very predictable and safe pairing. It’s interesting to see how Lauryn describes this oud as switching directions – just like the rose. I do remember reading about the magnificence of the Taifi rose distillate somewhere (perhaps in a Sultan Pasha attar?).

It’s also interesting to see this described as veering between masculine and feminine.

I haven’t had a chance to sniff one this houses perfumes before.

    Love fro Madison, WI

  • I like that it’s described as smokey and unisex. Also, it has orange blossoms, which I love. This sounds very sexy. Thanks for another fabulous draw! USA

  • Rose & Oud are a synergetic couple, if well-sourced and blended with finesse. I really hope Ormonde Jayne is using authentic Taif rose, as the name implies. The article, however, states that Mata Hari rose is used. What gives? USA.

  • I need this frag! The high quality ‘oud that changes directions’ comment sealed the deal for me.

  • Rose has generally not been a prominent note in fragrances I have worn. If it is too heavy it drives unisex fragrances into the feminine range for me imo. Perhaps this is one that you can pull off at the office. Sounds like an interesting one to try. Thanks for the draw. From USA.

  • This sounds really nice. I like the fact that it doesn’t settle on feminine or masculine as my girl and I like to share fragrances and I generally dont mind what others may think is too feminine. The Oud sounds like an Oud to experience as well. And the fact that it’s not a kind of standard rose Oud combo is also appealing. I have not yet had the pleasure of trying anything from Ormonde Jayne but would love to. In the U.S. Thanks Cafleurebon, Ormonde Jayne, and Europerfumes for the generous draw.

  • I love Ormonde Jayne’s Ta’if, one of my favorite rose scents. I think this one might be good since the oud had classy restraint. I’d love to find out what a frisky spice does to this creation. This one is sounding more unisex than the regular Ta’if. When my husband took me shopping for fragrance on our anniversary I was torn between Ta’if and Vanille Iris. Vanille Iris won out, just by a smidge. I’d love to win this! Thanks for the chance. USA.

  • I like the imagery of Lauryn’s review. I can definitely get a feel of this fragrance from her lovely prose. I like Tolu of Ormonde Jayne, and I would very much like to try Ta’if Elixir. Thanks for a most enjoyable review and a very generous draw. I’m in the USA

  • fazalcheema says:

Taif Elixir comes across as an androgynous fragrance that has masculine and feminine elements but is neither one of them. It is a rose fragrance but not rose soliflore with oud and spicy elements. My fav. from OJ is Nawab of Oudh. I am in US.

  • The Plum Girl says:

Thanks for this review: I adore Ta’if from OJ but Elixir made me drool! Classy it is!
    It took me places…

This sounds gorgeous! I love how this is described as a “pas de deux” between rose and oud, and the idea that the oud note smells like library walls, pouch tobacco, hair tonic…such evocative language! I love the original Ta’if, so I’m excited that this exists! In addition to that, my favorite OJ scent is Ormonde Woman. Thanks so much for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • I have sampled Ta’if and I like it, love to win this. I agree it does teeter between masculine and feminine perfectly. US

  • The mix of notes sounds wonderfully rich and complex. I can’t imagine Elixir not becoming a favorite. USA

  • Such beautiful mysterious sounding concoction. I love taif rose as a note and the multifaceted blend with the powdery, oud-y, saffron spiced touches must be wonderful. I have tried Woman and Frangipani by OJ and loved both.

  • Love the description of the scent as a dance between masculine and feminine. Would love to smell!

    USA here.

  • Love the ambiguous gender alignment. The combination of “fluffy rose and spiced oud” sounds intoxicating. Sadly I have never tried an Ormonde Jayne scent. I am in the U.S.

  • I’m curious to try this one just to see how the Oud smells in this scent and I’ve never tried anything from this house but would like to.

  • Who doesn’t love a beautiful rose/oud fragrance! I’m sure Ormonde Jayne is one of the very best. I love how she related this fragrance to a romantic symphony. My favorite OJ would be Montabaco. USA

  • Oud that switches directions sounds wonderful. Not to mention teetering between masculine and feminine but not settling on either. It sounds rather ineffable and yet absolutely intriguing.

  • Thanks, everyone, for your comments. hkmadani: when i describe Ta’if Elixir as a “Mata Hari rose” I am using “Mata Hari” as an adjective rather than as an actual rose classification to suggest its mysteriousness. Hope that helps.

  • A friend of mine is a huge Ormonde Jayne collector. I’ve tried her original Ta’if from when it was first released. To my nose it’s a very elegant, exotic scent. The Elixir sounds never more complex. I like oud so this sounds like a must try for me. I’m in the US

  • redwheelbarrow says:

Wow I love everything about this. Tobacco, library walls, and smoke mixed with rose? I’m in. I have not tried Ta’if but this version sounds divine. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • ScentitarFragrance says:

What appeals to me is the vision to capture the streets and perhaps a exotic stranger in the middle east. This fragrance seeks to capture the sensual and seductive side of the middle east with it’s own unique charm. I also would love to win since I love Ta’if Rose and I believe i am infatuated with it. I love that Lauryn explained the top, middle and base of the perfume and explained that evolution as a experience. She went as far as to explain the nuances of the fragrance in each stage as well. My Favorite Ormonde Jayne Fragrance I have tried is Montabacco Intensivo ! USA Resident !

  • Ta’if Elixir sounds nice. I like the mysterious rose with Smokey Oud. Haven’t had the chance to explore the House of Ormonde Jayne. Thanks for the draw, Ca

  • I love how this fragrance is described as classy and warm, in addition to “gauzy rose pedals” and smoky oud – sounds fantastic and something that my wife and I could share! Would love to give this a sniff. My favorite Ormonde Jayne perfume is Ormonde Man, which is hands down one of my top three favorite office scents. Thank you CaFleureBon for organizing the draw and introducing me to Ta’if Elixir. Regards from Boston, USA.

  • Each and every time I’m thinking about Ormonde Jayne, and Linda Pilkington first thing comes to mind is an article from a few years back when she was asked about IFRA , regulations and reformations.
I’m such a huge fan of her “no reformulations” kind of policy . I remember she said “I won’t change my fragrances, don’t buy if you don’t want to” , or something in the same vane.
I know “regular” Ta’if . Really nice sweet , spicy and rosy autumn fragrance. I’ll check the Elixir version, and curious about what are the differences with the regular Ta’if. I presume it’s not just the addition of oud.
I do own Frangipani Made to Measure in 50% concentration in custom bottle , and i feel like i own a bespoke perfume.Pure parfum versions they called Made to Measure.
Thank you Europerfumes , and CaFleurebon for this draw , and Lauryn the nice review.

  • I love rose/oud combos. And, I like the dirty ones. I’ve only tried these OJs and of them Frangipan was my fave:
    Osmanthus
    Zizan
    Tolu
    Frangipan Absolute

  • What a pleasure to read . Colorful and straight to the point review by Lauryn Beer .
Twist of pink pepper , saffron, oud, dates and reminiscent of hookah smoke accords. Delicious.
From the three samples that I bought
    Tolu > Vanille d’Iris > Frangipani.
    Nice opportunity, thank you. USA

  • I can relate with Ta’if Elixir , because growing up in UK, we had roses ( and some other flowers) in our garden , and i still do here in US . Also I like oud , and LOVE eating dates . There’s always nice Persian dates in my Barbershop, for me and for the customers.
Tolu is my favorite Ormonde Jayne , such a luxurious scent. Everyone should if not own it , at least smell it .
Thank you Lauryn , fingers crossed.

What entices me? This whole article! From the first word to the last, Ta’if Elixir is now on my list of ones I must seek out! This fragrance sounds absolutely beautiful! “This oud smells, at different times, like old library walls, pouch tobacco, torch smoke, hair tonic.” Lauryn’s statement right here won my heart! The article was fantastic and had me swooning over the Ta’if Elixir but this right here stole the show! Old library walls, pouch tobacco, torch smoke, and the weird hair tonic… for some odd reason my mouth is watering for this scent! My wallet is not going to be happy! Thanks Lauryn, haha! I have just gotten myself into the world of Ormonde Jayne not long ago, and everything I have tried so far has blown my mind! I haven’t tried too many but Ormonde Man and Ormonde Woman are so nice, they will definitely be in my collection! Vanille d’Iris is stunning and if I don’t own a bottle soon, I’m not sure what I will do! I can not wait to dive further into this luxury brand! Thank you all for this amazing and super generous opportunity! I live in Delaware, US.

  • Love the description of the oud in this one. Would love to try this oud/rose combo. I have never tried anything from this brand

  • IvanVelikov says:

I had the pleasure of smelling Ta’if when I decided to dig into Ormonde Jayne. The Elixir version with oud In it , I’m curious to try.
I’m glad Ta’if Elixir do not differentiate a lot from Ta’if. Sometimes brands twist the new versions way too much, and the final result is unrecognizable compared to original , something I’m not a fan of.
Not sure why , but on me Ta’if gets Sweeter and sweeter going into second hour. Just like Lauryn describe it.
My personal favorite Ormonde Jayne fragrances are Taif and Tolu.
    Thank you. In US

  • I love the description of gauzy rose petals, syrupy orange blossom and the sweetness of buzzing bees. Very nice review, as always, Lauryn! I am in the USA

  • Sounds so beautiful..nice pink pepper with safron, than taif rose and high quality oud..WOW!! I like Ormond Jane perfume’s style, my favorite is Ormond Man. USA

  • What a great review, albeit short and sweet. The most appealing thing to me is her description of the multifaceted quality of the oud. I have tried the original Ta’if, but found it a little too sweet and one-dimensional in some aspects. But per Lauryn’s review, the oud truly adds some depth and darkness to an already beloved fragrance. So far, the most favorite Ormonde Jayne fragrance I have tried is Orris Noir. I do not yet own any from the house. Thanks so much for Europerfumes’ generosity! I’m in Oregon, US.

  • I told this story in my Orris Noir giveaway post , the way I found out about Ta’if, and later the 4 different versions of it.
I was blown away by the smell of a client in my bakery, and asked him about the fragrance his wearing. He only said “It’s a dark bottle Ormonde Jayne I bought from Harrods in London, but I don’t remember the name”. Smells very, and I mean very similar to a traditional Persian cake with rose, cardamom, saffron, almonds , orange water and dates. I was not able to remember the name back then, but I do now. It’s called Persian Pavlova cake, but more people know it as Persian Love Cake.
From the online research i did , i found out the fragrance is Ta’if Elixir. There’s also Ta’if, Ta’if Intensivo also carried by Europerfumes in the States , and Ta’if Extreme . I’m eager to try all 4 versions.
Appreciate the review, and the giveaway campaign. In US

  • Believe it or not, I’ve never had a chance to smell any Ormonde Jayne fragrances. This one sounds really pretty – a warm, spicy floral with the added touch of oud.
    I live in the US

  • AlwaysWater says:

I appreciate that you’re honest and creative enough to liken the oud to old library walls, pouch tobacco, torch smoke, hair tonic…and that doesn’t put me off at all! I love a dry medicinal oud. I have not tried any O.J. but have actually had my eye on the original Ta’if for a while. USA

  • I love that Ta’if Elixir, a spicy, woody scent dabbed with a plush rose… romantic in the way of a Mahler symphony.
My favorite is this one based on all the reviews I have read.

  • I am a rose lover and love the notes that are present in this creation. Saffron, oud, dates, pink pepper and it being a mysterious rose meets a smoky oud. Lovely and excited. Thanks so much for the draw. I live in the US.

  • Thanks for another great review, Lauryn! I love Ormond Jayne Ta’if and this sounds more beautiful and complex. This is what I loved most on your description – ‘Ormonde Jayne Ta’if Elixir is romantic in the way of a Mahler symphony: sweeping, changeable never quite telling you the whole story.’ My current favorite from this house is Ormonde Jayne Woman. Thanks for this opportunity. – CA, USA

  • Michael Prince says:

Lauryn great review of Ta’if Elixir. Sounds like a spicy, floral, and rose/oud combo fragrance. With beautiful transitions between rose and oud throughout the life of the fragrance. I don’t have a favorite  Ormonde Jayne fragrance because I haven’t tried anything from this house. I am from the USA.

  • Well Ta’if Elixir sure sounds nice. Quality rose + spices + oud + saffron and dates. Fireplace, warm blankets, bottle of expensive Cabernet Sauvignon , and happy moments is what came to my mind .
As for Ormonde Jayne fragrances , I told this story a couple of times already , but I’ll do It again, i just have to. I had Tolu back in late 2014 -it was a gift from mom , but unfortunately for a short period of time , because my younger cousin broke the bottle – dropped it from the second floor of the house.Barely used like .. ~10ml of this gem…max before this happen. Her being 16 back then was the thing that saved fer from my fists.
Every time i think about Ormonde Jayne i get this incident in my mind 🙁
From the 6-7 Ormonde Jayne I have smelled Tolu is the best one.
Cafleurebon, Lauryn and Europerfumes , wonderful draw we have here.
    Cheers from VA

  • I have never tested Ormonde Jayne Ta’if, so this one sounds very beautiful: pink pepper, which I love with, dusty saffron and “burnished wood and hookah smoke”…My favorite Ormonde Jayne perfume is Nawab of Oudh.

  • Excellent review and description by Lauryn! The Ta’if Elixir sounds exquisite. Ta’if roses are my favorite and with the addition of the Cambodian Oud, this is a beautiful combination. My favorite part is: “A mysterious rose meets a smoky oud in the dark alleys of a casbah. Shadowy, removed, both male and female, it’s a scent that that conjures ancient Arabian markets and elusive women.” I really would love to try this and I live in the US!

  • I have unfourtualely never tried any of her creations even though I want to. I love this is descrided as a mysterious rose, also the spicy notes in it.

Would love to try this one! Thank you for the chance I’m in the USA
