The Glaive sparkles, the golden swords twirl

Gold of Mary

and the two Suns dance

Benevolent intent is a silent language

The Forty precedes the Rebirth Flame — Olivier Durbano

Jeweler and artist Olivier Durbano is one of today’s most poetic perfumers. His Pierre Poemes, or Stone Poems series, which began in 2004 with the release of the stunning Rock Crystal, is premised on the spiritual and physical properties of the gemstones with which he crafts his pieces. His seventeenth fragrance, Quartz Quantic, is a fragrance of gold; of brilliant but beneficent light, of marigold flowers giggling in the breeze, of living things reaching towards the sun. It is a comforting, lovely citrus-incense with aromas of conifers, resins and herbs, and a soulful rosy heart.

Olivier Durbano Quartz Quantic shares a strong kinship with last year’s Aram. When I first smelled Quartz Quantic, I had a sense of Aram’s imprint, like the after-image of something seen in bright light after you close your eyes. The two fragrances share a bright, citrusy opening and rosy heart, and a deep sense of optimism. But Aram is terrestrial, reaching back into antiquity, with its dusty roads, seaworn shells, and cracked wood. Quartz Quantic does not look back. Where Aram is like a plane taxiing on a runway, gathering momentum for something that has not quite happened yet, Quartz Quantic takes off. It expands the gleaming top notes of its sibling with pine and wildflowers, heading towards the sky.

The fragrance begins with a tingly citrus-pine and the woodsy smell of tree bark, closely followed by the comforting aromas of frankincense and resin. By deploying an undercurrent of contrasting cooling notes that filter in gradually and unobtrusively throughout the first half of the fragrance, the bright, warm notes of bergamot, marigold (which smells herbal and a bit mulchy), and hyssop stand out memorably throughout the fragrance’s trajectory, and, along with the nursery milk sweetness of tonka bean give Quartz Quantic a continuous, almost rhythmic sensation of warmth.

Durbano is a deeply spiritual person and evocations of the holy are always present in his fragrances, often conveyed through different forms of incense as well as through plants that have Biblical significance. Dominating the heart of Quartz Quantic is a gentle rose – a centuries-old metaphor for the Virgin Mary – which makes a tender centerpiece around which the herbal, citric and tree notes dance. The rose is unobtrusive; in fact, it takes me a while to discern that it is the soft, floral scent of the mid-section. But its presence is important, cushioning the heart of the fragrance against the medicinal facets of kunzea ambigua, a Tasmanian plant related to tea tree, and the chilliness of cypress and pine.

As time goes on, Quartz Quantic becomes more aromatic, spicier, but stays luminous and lively. The flowers step back a bit, and Durbano’s incense becomes a coda to the dry-down. There’s a song from the musical, “Pippin,” called Morning Glow that implores:

Morning glow, fill the earth

Come and shine for all you’re worth

We’ll be present at the birth

Of old things looking new. Morning glow is long past due.”

Quartz Quantic is like that. It looks toward tomorrow with gleaming eyes and soulful heart. As Durbano told me, “For a year … I have felt a great awakening.” Wearing his quietly joyful Quartz Quantic, for a few moments, I feel it, too.

Notes: Scots pine needle, oliban essence, bergamot, hyssop, kunzea ambigua, marigold, Damascus rose, magnolia, musk, nargamotha, tonka bean, oliban resin.

Disclaimer: Sample of Quartz Quantic kindly provided by Olivier Durbano. My opinions, as always, are my own.

  • What an incredibly ethereal sounding fragrance. I have never smelled any Olivier Durbano perfumes before. Nor have I ever heard of the Tasmanian plant kunzea ambigua. But I do enjoy that fresh scent of tea tree. I like how the heart of the fragrance is rose, yet it’s almost hidden within the other notes. The final drydown sounds incredible with the spicy incense.
    I live in the USA.

  • The fragrance notes appeal to me. I live in Poland EU. My favorite Olivier Durbano perfume is Turquoise.

  • I have no experience with this brand, but it sounds really intriguing. I live in EU and would like to participate in the draw as those notes (rose, oliban, pine) are very appealing.

  • Ca Fleur Bon has made me very interested in Durbano’s fragrances though I haven’t yet tried them. I’m intrigued by his spiritual approach to scents as I use perfume to facilitate a feeling of connection to myself and feel more alive. I love the notes of pine, rose and incense so this sounds divine indeed. I’m in US.

  • I love the listed notes – citrus, bergamot, rose, oliban, cypress, pine – and trust Olivier Durbano to make magic with them. My favorite perfume of his, so far, is Rock Crystal. I live in the U.S.

  • I love perfumes with undercurrents of incense notes, and from Lauryn’s review, it appears that Olivier Durbano Quartz Quantic fits the bill very well. I’m not aware of the Tasmanian plant mentioned, so I am curious about it. Perfumes with a deeper, darker, spiritual meaning are always fascinating, and Olivier Durbano Quartz Quantic seems to be one of the kind. Unfortunately, I have not tried anything by Olivier Durbano, yet but after reading Lauryn’s review, I am curious to check it out. Thanks for the review of Olivier Durbano Quartz Quantic and a generous draw. From USA.

  • Oh how I wish I could meet Olivier Durbano. He seems so centered and mystical. I own Citrine.
I read this with such interest light instead of darkness

  • The notes used and presented in this fragrance are unique combination to me. This fragrance appears somewhat complex from Lauryn’s description of this fragrance’s journey. A journey I’m looking forward to. I have not had the pleasure of getting my nose on any of Olivier Durbano’s creations, yet. Pink Quartz, Black Tourmaline, Citrine, and Aram offer notes that are appealing to me. USA

  • Dubaiscents says:

What a coincidence, I was just sampling the amazing Aram today and thinking how magical Olivier’s work really is. The fact that Lauryn thought that Quartz Quantic was analogous to the plane soaring vs Aram just taking off makes me very eager to try this one. Thank you for the draw. US

  • I really like piney fragrances. And this one sounds divine. The only Olivier Durbano fragrance I own (and the only one I’ve smelled) is Black Tourmaline…and I love it. It is the most spiritual incense fragrance I know. I’d love to win a bottle of Quartz Quantic. I’m in Oklahoma, USA. Thanks, as always, for the draw.

  • Quartz Quantic sounds like an intriguing fragrance. I love pine and love to try any fragrance that features the note. I’m also interested in the notes of marigold and hyssop. Lauryn’s comments about how the fragrance becomes more aromatic and spicier in the drydown really appeals to me. My favorite Olivier Durbano fragrance that I have tried is Lapis Philosophorum but I still need to try Lapus Lazuli which sounds amazing, as well. Thank you for the article and giveaway. I am located in the USA.

  • I never tested any Olivier Durbano’s fragrance before,Quartz Quantic seems to be envelopinng , spiritual awakening and pure! Thanks from Romania!

I love Olivier’s perfumes. My favourite are: Lapis Lazuli, Spem Petram, Black Tourmaline, Heliotrope…. Mistic conceptual ideas, feelings, great notes, incences… And being his kind, Light Person. I wish to knows how Quarz Quantic smelling. I’m from Poland. EU. Best greetings.

  • The article says Olivier Durbano Quartz Quantic has some similarities to Olivier’s other fragrance Aram. The composition is citrusy, woody, resinous and it becomes more aromatic over time. I am in US.

  • I’m so curious to smell that new Olivier Durbano’s perfume! I love Quartz Rose from that very adorable soul. I’m sure that that last creation, with Oliban, Tonka bean and Rose will give me plaisur!
    Peace. living in France.

  • Quartz Quantic name is a bit misleading, the fragrance is not cold , metallic or mineral ,at least that’s my perception of “Quartz” .
Lauryn Beer actually described the fragrance as spicy, piny , and heavy on the incense , with small amounts of citrus in the opening , and rose in the base. Appropriate fragrance for the Fall , with ethereal feel.
I own 2 Olivier Durbano fragrances – 30ml of Black Tourmaline Extrait version – in my opinion 10/10 masterpiece every fragrance lover should at least try.I also had Amethyst EDP , finished it, and bought the extrait version.
    Thanks a lot
USA only, for now at least

  • I’m a fan of Olivier Durbano. One of my favs is Amethyst. Quartz Quantic sounds like a delightful scent with its rose heart and incense vibes. On my wishlist it goes! Thanks for another great draw! Mich USA

  • Marigold is not a fragrance that I usually associate with perfume, but it is one that I love. It is a magical scent to me. Also, I work in the geology department at university, so these rock scents are very intriguing. Unfortunately, I haven’t had the opportunity to try an Olivier Durbano perfume. Maybe this is my chance. I am in the US.

  • I like how Oliver is using olibanum resin in his scents, it gives that solid rock feeling and also spirituality related with precious chrystals. My favorite is amethyst, but I haven’t tried quartz yet, maybe it is even better.
I live in the Latvia, EU and would like to join this draw, thank you!

  • I enjoyed Lauryn’s description of this fragrance…lovely citrus-incense, …soulful rosy heart… plus the listed notes sound beautiful and would love to try this fragrance. I have not tried any of Olivier Durbano creations yet.

Perfume is like poetry and music for the nose, so thank you for this review, Lauryn! I feel like we have all had our own awakenings during this pandemic when we were forced to stop or change so many of our normal habits and activities and this has lead to new dawns and new beginnings. I’d love to give this one a try. I like how Olivier is not only a perfumer but also a jeweler, working in different aesthetic mediums. I live in the US.

  • Im Really interested in trying this one because the variety of notes from woods to rose and tonka bean. The way its been described, it just sounds so calming. Ive sadly not tried any fragrances by this man as of yet. I live in the US. Iowa.

  • wandering_nose says:

Quartz Quantic appears to be a representation of light and lightness, hope, warmth, positive outlook and all the things that are much needed after times of uncertainty and sometimes despair. The notes make me think of forest fairies and floating above the ground among sun rays. I have not had the chance to try any of the Olivier Durbano creations as of yet. Thank you from the Republic of Ireland, EU

  • Vanillander65 says:

Quartz Quantic sounds like a Summer day in the forest, full of great energy that connects the body to the elements of nature. I think it is perfect to use in a meditative state.
I have not tried any of Olivier Durbano’ perfumes, but I would like to.
I’m from the EU. Thank you for the draw!

This sounds so incredible! Beautiful review! I’m interested in the way you describe the undercurrent of contrasting cooling notes – it’s such a lovely description and I can understand exactly what you’re talking about. I also love that the rose was not noticed as such. I love it when you get that familiar feeling from a note and it takes a while to realize what it is. I really need to sample Mr. Durbano’s offerings. This sounds so amazing. Thank you for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • I would like to, finally, get to try an Olivier Durbano fragrance. I’ve never tried one and I’m not sure what exactly to expect, but they seem like they are interesting. I can like pine in fragrances, and I’m interested to see what Olivier Durbano’s use of pine and wildflowers in a fragrance is like. I also want to see what the kunzea ambigua is like. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • This fragrance sounds both spiritual and uplifting, which is not such an usual combination. The notes sound lovely, and I’m especially curious about marigold, a nostalgic note for me since from my childhood.
I live in the EU and have never tried an Olivier Durbano fragrance before.

  • Congratulations on his 17th fragrance that’s a lot… Hopefully soon I can get that awakening feeling too!! I love rose & really intrigued with kunzea ambigua , a Tasmanian plant related to tea tree!! Very interested in this fragrance, thanks for introducing us!! USA thanks Cafleurebon love all y’all do + the many draws & good luck everyone!!!

  • Finding this blog was a happy accident. Quartz quantic reads like an experience. I really enjoyed the bit about the rose ‘cushioning the heart of the fragrance against the medicinal facets… ‘ because it makes me think of quiet warmth and empathy, qualities of my favourite people.

Would love to try this, based in Ireland.

  • As a deeply spiritual person and someone that feels particularly close to the Blessed Virgin Mary the symbolism in this perfume is particularly interesting to me. I also just happen to love incense heavy perfumes. In maryland.

  • I’m so curious about this perfumer-the reviews always appeal to me but I haven’t had a chance to try this house. The note list is right up my alley, I especially love a good marigold note. Thank you for sharing your thoughts & for the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Olivier Durbano’s Quartz Quantic sounds so tranquil and grounding. I love that this features oliban. I have a friend who leads meditation classes and she uses an oliban EO during sessions. The gentle florals and the pine notes make it seem like a peaceful walk through the woods. Favorite Durbano fragrance is Jade. I’m in MD, USA.

  • First time I’ve heard Olivier Durbano fragrances are a thing, was on Cafleurebon.
For years I was under the impression he’s is a fashion designer , because of my sister in law.
She collects shoes and scarf , now she has 3 Olivier Durbano , hand made and painted i believe scarfs.
His scarfs I know , but i’ve never smelled his fragrances. Count me in for the spiritual , balsamic, spicy , morning glow one called Quartz Quantic
    Thanks for the draw

  • Lauryn! Thank you for a wonderful review! I have a much better understanding of M. Durbano’s artistic vision now and have just ordered some samples from Lucky Scent. Quartz Quantic is a poetic name. I really enjoy and appreciate your comparison with Aram. I find it fascinating to meditate on antiquity, stone, etc. Thank you for this opportunity! USA

  • sephrenia300 says:

Really interesting review! What appeals to me about Quartz Quantic is that Olivier Durbano is a poetic perfumer and that this fragrance is a part of the Stone Poems series. I love the idea that Mr. Durbano considers his fragrances poems, and that he uses them to communicate with his audience.

I live in the US. I do not have a favorite Olivier Durbano perfume yet as I have not tried any, but I am especially eager to try Rock Crystal and Lapis Philosophorum.

  • joshuabrian says:

I’m most attracted to what seems to be the richness that would come from these notes. Great writing and thanks for the draw. From Indianapolis, Indiana

  • Mazikeen Smith 24 says:

First of all I am really amazed by how Lauryn used words and situations to describe the experience with the perfume. I also love how Durbano uses poems to introduce his creations.
What appeals to me the most are the notes and the idea of the fragrance being bright, sunny, and warm altogether.
    Cheers from USA <3

  • Another great creation from Durbano. I feel this will bring happiness whenever you wear it. The description is very clear and interesting. The notes are great as well, I love the idea of florals combined with tonka and resins.
Have a fragrant day to all!
