This is the forest primeval.
The murmuring pines and the hemlocks,

Bearded with moss, and in garments green, indistinct in the twilight,

Stand like Druids of eld, with voices sad and prophetic,

Stand like harpers hoar, with beards that rest on their bosoms.

Loud from its rocky caverns, the deep-voiced neighboring ocean

Speaks, and in accents disconsolate answers the wail of the forest. –  Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 1847

 Green M.oldavite 18.9

Green Light, by Olivier Durbano

In a quiet wood, the earth sleeps. Weary of its long journey to a destination it has never known, a tiny planet pitches towards the drowsy forests of Bohemia. The pale light of those still moments just before dawn filters through the trees and draws its rocky visitor homewards. Moments later, birds shriek a warning and scatter, and the night sky lights up, startled. Soon, the ground will blaze like a thousand hearths as molten glass spatters and the asteroid finds its final rest.

Moldavite is an incandescent, natural green glass with unusual patterning that is thought to have formed in the heat of an asteroid impact some 15 million years ago. Its intricately patterned surface and interior radiance can make it look like an extraterrestrial lettuce or green coral, a living stone. In the alchemical hands of jeweler-perfumer-poet Olivier Durbano, M.oldavite 18:9 is transformed into an auric fragrance that glows with alternating cool, mossy and warm, golden notes.

Every aspect of Durbano’s perfume is imbued with meaning. Moldavite, is for Durbano a “messenger from another planet.” Like all of his creations, M.oldavite comes with a number; here, 18:9. Durbano describes the significance of 18 as “a feminine principle, the Shadows, the Moon, which represents all that is buried in each of us, and which precedes the light.” The number 9 symbolizes transformation, renewal, wisdom to refocus on the essential. Central to the fragrance is the herbal-sweet, celery-citrus scent of angelica. Durbano uses both angelica seeds and root in the top notes; and it is instantly recognizable on first spray.

This is one of Durbano’s most beautifully executed creations, a fougere-like green and gold cabochon. Each note segueing quietly into its partner, contrasting cool and warm aromas without fanfare. M.oldavite comes across immediately as primeval and woodsy, but its verdancy is gentle rather than acerbic or leafy. This effect is initially created by combining angelica — the herb of the Holy Spirit, as Durbano describes it – with palo santo, the holy tree. While these two notes have an ancient mystical significance in a number of cultures, they also, happily, blend beautifully together. Creamy and lightly anisic, palo santo hugs the herb’s woodland aromas into a calm embrace, and moss dots the landscape.

A fruity kick of pink pepper livens things up, followed by a pinch of star anise, anticipating the heart notes of lavender – herbal and slightly smoky – and balsamic frankincense, which wrap around that lovely angelica like old vine. They meld into a harmony of cool, off-sweet greenery, accentuated by hyssop. But coming up behind them almost imperceptibly are warming notes of elemi – Durbano’s signature – and nutty immortelle. M.oldavite begins to  change from minty, forestal coolness to radiant, ambery balm. Mellow woody notes underpin soft resins, and M.oldavite18:9 becomes radiant, like light on silk in a Godfrey Kneller portrait.

Arriving at drydown like a soft landing, M.oldavite takes on some soapy musk and a subtle amount of vetiver, reminding me of its initial hints of the barbershop. Throughout M.oldavite’s development, I am struck by how seamless it is. Its aromas are identifiable yet without distinct edges, lending the composition a cocooning smoothness and olfactory glow. Like the patterned glass it is named for, Olivier Durbano M.oldavite shifts between darker, cooler facets and autumnal, golden ones. Olivier Durbano Moldavite 18:9 is serenely lovely and  may be Olivier Durbano’s most soulful fragrance yet.

  • I like green scents and this one seems to have vetiver and barbershop lavender facets. I am not familiar with the brand yet. From EU

  • Olivier Durbano M.oldavite 18:9 seems like an intriguing green, mossy fragrance. As some interested in space, this is interesting concept as Moldavite is the result of an asteriod impact. It is almost as if Olivier imaged how a green forest on an alien planet would smell like. I am in US.

  • I enjoyed the asteroid imagery and concept. I enjoy fragrances that hint at classics, so the barbershop hints in this sound interesting. I have not tried anything from Olivier yet!
    Thank you from Canada.

  • The fascinating and unique notes of this fragrance struck me. I live in Poland, EU. I don’t have a favorite Olivier Durbano fragrance because I never tried this house. I am a follower. My Insta name: insztagramekphoto

  • Oh wow my mother was an herbalist and so many ingredients were important herbs she worked with Hyssop, Angelica, anise, magnolia, lavender, moss etc… I would deeply love a chance to own this. I don’t have a favorite Olivier Durbano perfume because I don’t own any…yet. Soon hopefully!

  • This house is a house that, although, has been alive for many many years, I have not really got the chance to experience. I hope I will get to break the ice with M.oldavite 18:9

Thanks Cafleurebon and Mr. Durbano for this wonderful article and draw!

  • The idea of a warm forestry fragrance really grabbed me! Also interesting to connect a forestry fragrance with an other-worldly stone <3

I haven’t tried any of his fragrances yet, so I don’t have a favourite- I hope I can try these soon!

Thank you for the review, writing from the EU.

  • The Olivier Durbano M.oldavite 18:9 sounds like a perfect green creation, a true hymn to all things green and woody.

  • My favorite Olivier Durbano perfume is Black Tourmaline. I enjoyed reading about the asteroid breaking dawn with its fiery landing. The notes of M.Oldavite 18:9 sound inviting. I imagine the entrance to a deep dark ancient forest. Thanks for the wonderful opportunity to sniff. Mich USA

Bright and green compositions always moves me a lot, and this fragrance is pictured as a long walk in the woods, soothing and refreshing at the same time. I’d love to try it, and I never had a chance to get to know any of Olivier Durbano’s creations. Hopefully I will! EU

Thanks for the great review Lauryn.

Olivier Durbano often makes such interesting scents and they all seem to have a deep and wonderfully meditative/ religious quality to them, with Frankinscence and myrrh featuring in abundance.

This beautiful fougere with angelica and a vetiver barbershop drydown sounds absolutely wonderful.

I haven’t had a chance to smell this house before.

    Cheers from WI, USA

  • This sounds like a beautiful interpolation of the green genre. It is described as multifaceted with many nuances of forest colours in it. It sounds mysterious and peaceful. I’m not familiar with other offerings from the brand.

  • Thanks for this wonderful review!

Another fascinating house for me to explore! I have not heard of this perfumer before so there’s always a bit of excitement to find somethng new and interesting!

M.oldavite18:9 sounds like Olivier’s magnum opus and I would love to give it a try. Soul is the one thing in look for in my fragrances. I am not necessarily drawn by notes or accords. It is the blend and the soul of the fragrance that does it for me.

I have followed the accounts of Olivier and CaFleureBon on my @ronaldjapenga instagram account.

    Greetings from the UK!

  • I’ve never heard of the moldavite mineral before. The intricate patterning, the incandescent green color and association with an asteroid impact all add to the mystique. I love the description of the fragrance shifting between darker, cooler facets and autumnal golden ones. Given the list of notes, I see the comparison to a classic fougere. Favorite Durban’s is Amethyst. MD, USA.

  • From green forestal coolness to radiant, ambery balm amd finally landing to soapy musky drydown. I love angelica, i love moss, i love vetiver. Lets see how all these can be mixed…I like Amethyst from Olivier Durbano. I live in Greece, EU.

I really appreciate fougere fragrances, and the description of this one is excellent. The statement that ‘each note segues quietly into its partner, contrasting cool and warm aromas without fanfare, makes me think that this fragrance is expertly blended (which is a high note), showing the high quality of the fragrance. I’m anticipating getting my nose on this.

If I win, this will be the first Durbsno fragrance for me.

I live in Waldorf, MD, USA.

  • This article was so fascinating to read and also to “look at”! The images are gorgeous and I have now learned about a new stone/glass I didn’t know about. Such an interesting way of being created!
About M.oldavite the perfume, it sounds rather intriguing and fascinating. Transitioning the cool, crisp, foresty opening into a warm, ambery comfort in such a graceful and organic way sounds like quite an accomplishment.
I live in the EU, am an Instagram follower and have never smelled an Olivier Durbano perfume before.

  • I am in the boat of those who like and enjoy wearing green fragrances. I think they are timeless masterpieces and you can’t go wrong when choosing such a perfume. Thanks!

  • I like the “messenger from another planet” concept and the notes sound great. I know that olibanum/frankinscence plays central role in all Olivier Durbano’s fragrances, so this one must be good, too. My favorite from his line is Pink Quartz. EU

  • AdventurousFox says:

The contrast and transition from cool to warm is what intrigues me most about M.oldavite 18:9, can’t remember any other perfume I’ve tried that develops in such a unique way. My favorite of Oliver’s fragrances is Prométhée, it’s very spiced and ambery and feels like a warm blanket. I also like Jade which is another green fragrance. Croatia, EU.

  • Nom de Guerre says:

This one is on my radar – count me in whenever there are angelica and palo santo doing their magic! The whole experience sounds like a fluffy green explosion. Greetings from Riga, Latvia.

  • Everything about Olivier Durbano M.Oldavite 18:9 sounds absolutely lovely! I love angelica and absinthe notes, and the combination with immortelle, which is a note I also love, sounds so unique. I haven’t been able to try any Olivier Durbano perfumes yet but I would love the opportunity! I’m in MN, USA.

  • I have tried most of Olivier’s perfumes, and having visited his lovely atelier in Grasse, this new scent sounds like a magical addition. All his scents are so unusual and seem to contain a bit of fairy dust. He uses unusual notes and combinations, and the mention of angelica and elemi has me intrigued. I am in the US.

  • I, unfortunately, have never tried anything from this house, but you grabbed my attention with Palo Santo. I also like the addition of magnolia as I don’t see that often. In maryland.

  • Great review by Lauryn of this new gem by Olivier Durbano. Since I discovered the brand I am in love with it, being Black Tourmaline my favorite from them.
M.oldavite 18:9 seems a perfect green scent with the fougere vibes that I love so much. I love vetiver and the barbershop lavander style, it makes me remember the 90´s so much.
Would love to try this one soon.

  • I’m really fascinated by translation of gem stones into scents! The form, color and other significant characteristics of the gem used as a perfumer’s brief. I’m in the USA.

  • Well I learned something new today: I’d never heard of Moldavite before! I love green notes in perfume, and like the idea of this one moving between green and gold.

  • Lauryn!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Gorgeous Gorgeous Review! I love the layers of meaning & connections with the work of fragrance artistry (as I often view his work). I LOVE green fragrances and so can’t wait to experience this one! I am especially drawn to M.oldavite 18:9 for its intellectual connection to an asteroid impact. My favorite Durbano might be SpeM PetraM, though this answer will change with seasons, mood, etc. Thank you for the wonderful opportunity! ❤️ USA

  • I am a woman, but I think I can pull this off ‘some soapy musk and a subtle amount of vetiver, reminding me of its initial hints of the barbershop’. I am willing to take the risk as M.oldavite sounds that it’s worth taking it.
    Thank you!!

  • I was surprised to see the palo santo note featured so promenently! I don’t know if it is just my inexperience, but I dont think ive ever encountered a perfume that used palo santo. Very interesting! I live in the US 🙂

  • Olivier Durbano brand is underrated. The perfumes are simply amazing and I own White Chrystal, Black Tourmaline and Turquoise.congratulations on 18 years.
I learned about him on Cafleurebon and wish more retailers had his fragrances.
M.oldavite 18:9 with vetiver and Angelica really appeals to me

  • Wonderful review! The green, herbal notes in M.oldavite sound unusual and intriguing, and seem to circle back to Jade, one of my favorites by Olivier. My FAVORITE favorite Olivier Durbano (and probably my favorite incense frag period) is Rock Crystal — it always brings me peace and clarity and suits any season. I’m in the US.

  • What a lovely review you’ve left us all waiting to try an amazing fragrance. Super excited and interested in trying it myself as well. Cheers from USA!

  • I love the concept of this fragrance: the otherwordly moldavite theme; a steadfastly green palette; a bold angelica note; spiritual symbolism throughout. M.oldavite’s progression sounds wonderful, moving from verdant herbal fougère, to elemi and immortelle amber. to soapy base. I’m really intrigued by M.oldavite 18:9 and would love to try it.

I’m in the midwest, USA. I haven’t tried any Olivier Durbano perfumes, though this seems like a great place to start.

  • I am intrigued by Angelica root in this creation, this root is used in Nordic folk medicine, a lineage my ancestors are from. It would be an intriguing perfume to experience to connect to ancestral roots through scent. Also, the mention of frankincense, my most favourite note in a perfume. I am trying to grow it myself, from seed. I am in Canada.

Wonderful review Lauryn! What struck me about Olivier Durbano M.Oldavite 18:9 is how it is a fragrance centered around the note of angelica sung both angelica seeds and root. I am a big fan of angelica as a note and find it criminally underutilized! Any fragrance that features it is one I automatically want to try.
