Olfactive Studio Iris Shot and Violet Shot Review (Dominique Ropion) + Sepia Collection Draw

Dominique Ropion for Olfactive Studio Sepia Collection Violet Shot, Rose Shot and Iris shot

Michelyn and I felt deeply honored Esxence 2019 when Creative Director Céline Verleure shared generous samples (still in their IFF-labeled  lab bottles) of the trio of new Sepia Collection releases composed by Maître Parfumeur Dominique Ropion. These are expected to launch this coming autumn and will be part of their Sepia Collection, soliflores reenvisioned: Olfactive Studio Iris Shot, Violet Shot, and Rose Shot.

Genevieve Bujold in the King of Hearts, 1966

It’s a fair assessment to note that both Olfactive Studio Iris Shot and Violet Shot nestle themselves into the terrain of gourmand soliflores. They share common ground: ionones and irones, albeit showcased differently; a creamy drydown which lingers beguilingly; pink pepper as introduction; spice interwoven cleverly without calling undue attention to itself. Both are easy to wear and  beautiful in a characteristically French manner – picture young Geneviève Bujold in Philippe de Broca’s 1966 cult film The King of Hearts (Le Roi de Coeur). One may appreciate loveliness up close; there is undeniable comfort in a fragrant second skin. I think they are unabashedly romantic.

Iris Shot Olfactive studio review sepia collection

Olfactive Studio Iris Shot is initially bright, peppery, rooty – the intricate dance between pink pepper and cardamom is delightful, yielding itself to carrot seed and orris. I love these phases; they contrast earthly/unearthly, as I find carrot seed to be fatty, herbal-spicy and rhizomal – whereas orris feels more powdery, quicksilver-like in its earthy character. Each is remarkably tenacious and a marvelous fixative in perfumery; they are augmented with iris aldehydes for good measure and expansivity, The ensuing development fascinates because somehow it manages to be sweet, somewhat woody and resembles pastry dough. Cedar and Ambroxan insinuate themselves with vetiver enhancing the verdancy we first experienced earlier. It’s almond accord time which skews everything sweet and bread-y; you can almost taste it. Iris Shot is a very different take on iris gourmand (Guerlain Iris Ganache, we’re winking at you.). It’s not as self-consciously sweet (yes, I bought a bottle in 2007 – and I still love it) as the Guerlain, as almond as Lancôme Iris Dragées or vanillic in the vein of Lancôme Lavandes Trianon. Iris Shot’s drydown is subtly enveloping and delicately-hued; it’s beautiful.

Notes: Madagascan pink pepper, Guatemalan cardamom, iris aldehyde, French cassis bud, orris concrete, almond accord, carrot seed, Virginia cedar, Haitian vetiver, Ambroxan

Olfactive Studio Violet shot review sepia collection

Olfactive Studio Violet Shot Photo by Roberto Greco

Olfactive Studio Violet Shot opens with sunlit spice. Mandarin is positively frisky with pink pepper and the first burst is playful. There’s something magical which occurs when the violet leaf note encounters saffron: it’s as if limpidity was embroidered with golden thread, barely visible. Now we smell a glowing gourmand, ambery/vanillic in tone yet recognizably violet. A tender patchouli note waxes wistful in Violet Shot’s base as if on tiptoe, sylvan sans menace. There are no beasts lining the green glade, only wood violets illuminated by the random shaft of light.

Notes: Calabrian mandarin, Madagascar pink pepper, cut grass accord, Safraleine, Egyptian violet leaf, Indonesian patchouli, Madagascar vanilla, Spanish labdanum

  • Olfactive Studio fragrances, yes I have a few. My favorite is Still Life in Rio. I’ve been reading about this new series and am looking forward to trying these. If lucky, Violet Shot, please. USA

  • I enjoyed how multifaceted they both came across as. Violet shot maybe appeals to me more, because of the “golden thread” of gourmand dimension. Would love to sample these. From Romania. Thank you.

Ida’s review makes you to feel like into a fairy tale, as usually…it makes you to want to try those fragrances…all of theme.
I do not have any of Olfactive Studio fragrances, but the Violet shot seems to be my favourite one, based on the Ida’s review.
    I am from EU.

  • The Olfactive Shots have intrigued me most of all announced new releases. As a total iris freak I can‘t wait to try Iris Shot. As for the violet I love violets with a deeper meaning; the gourmand touch let me think of terrific Bois de Violettes.
As for now I have no favorite of this brand. But these two could be definitely for me.
So please count me in. I‘m living in Germany.

  • I like Olfactive Studio perfume very much, especially Still Life.I like iris , so I find Irish Shot very beautiful, I am sure taht MR. Ropion are on the top as always.

Oh, these reviews are gorgeous! I love the way Ida captured Iris Shot – iris and violets are notes I’m still figuring out my relationship to, but these both sound wonderful. It’s too hard to pick which one I want to try more! Just everything, please. I’m in the US.

  • recursivemask says:

As always your reviews are amazing, creating a stunning picture of the fragrance and their evolution. I’d love to be able to smell Iris Shot, and I’m in the US.

  • Wow, these sound amazing. Iris and violet are some of my favorite notes – I love purple – and the combination of notes in these perfumes sound magical. I am a big fan of Dominique Ropion. I think the Iris Shot is just a little more appealing to me. I have never tired any Olfactive Studio fragrances – onto the sampling list! I am in the USA.

  • bigscoundrel says:

Wonderful descriptions of these two fragrances. Iris Shot appeals to me most, because it has one of my favorite notes, cardamom. In the USA.

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

Gorgeous descriptions and photographs – I love floral gourmands. The cardamom and almond in Iris Shot appeal to me more, though Violet Shot sounds great, too. I’m in the US, have never tried another Olfactive Studio scent.

  • wildevoodoo says:

Ida’s descriptions are so evocative- her review of Iris Shot utterly mouthwateringly so, while the review of Violet Shot paints a vivid portrait both olfactory and visual, and even auditory. I can practically hear Vivaldi in the background! Iris Shot sounds more appealing to me, because as a baker and perfume lover who sees the two art forms as inextricably linked together, the idea of pastry dough-like woodiness, bready, with balanced almond and vanillic sweetness sets my mind racing with ideas for desserts! (I love conjuring up ideas for desserts based on fragrances) Thank you to Mme Verleure for the opportunity to try Olfactive Studio’s fragrances, as I have not yet been able to get my nose on them! I am in the US 🙂

  • I enjoyed reading here about Howe much the photos add to the overall impression of the scents and the review. My favortie Olfactives Stdui perfume is „Chambre noir“.

    Living in Germany, EU

  • The photo shots are amazing! Not knowing how they actually smell I’d say the imagery is even more attractive! I’d love to get to know the actual scents!
I think Iris Shot intrigues me more since I’m kinda scared of Safraleine used inn the other one. We’ll see!
Thanks for the draw! I live in EU.

  • NiceVULady says:

As always, Ida’s reviews are magical in the way that they are able to imagine the scent for you. Of the two, I’m drawn to the Violet Shot. I don’t have a favorite from Olfactive Studio. Thank you for the review and the draw. I’m in the USA

  • Violet shot sounds like something I would love. Ida’s statement, we smell a glowing gourmand, ambery/vanillic in tone yet recognizably violet, is beautiful. Thank you for the chance to win. USA

  • doveskylark says:

I am crazy about anything violet, so I was immediately drawn to Violet Shot. Oh, how I love a forest carpeted with wood violets. The combination with saffron sounds so luxurious.
    I live in the USA.

  • samppahoo says:

I enjoyed the Ida’s detailed description of both. Iris shot i liked a bit better, due to “the ensuing development fascinates because somehow it manages to be sweet, somewhat woody and resembles pastry dough” part. I would love to try them. I’m from Finland, thank you.

  • I love Ida’s reviews, Period. I always learn something and love her interaction with fragrance (and her fragrance friends)! I’m in USA and think I would like iris shot more. I love both notes but I like violet flower more than violet leaf. I want the sweet powdery confection rather than the woody herbal one.

  • Anna Egeria says:

Ida has written a beautiful review. Olfactive Studios is a new fragrance house to me. Violet Shot appeals to me the most because of its’ exquisite notes. I’d also love any fragrance I could picture the young Genevieve Bujold wearing. She was one of my favorite actresses. I’m in the US. Thank you for the draw.

  • Elizabeth T. says:

This was beautifully written. “…I find carrot seed to be fatty, herbal-spicy and rhizomal – whereas orris feels more powdery, quicksilver-like in its earthy character…” I can tell Ida appreciates these notes! I feel the same way! Thanks for this review. I would love especially to try Iris Shot. Thank you for the draw! I’m in the USA.

  • I’m not sure what makes me more enthusiast the iris note or the fact that the creator is D. Ropion. I would love to have a sniff of this new creation. Romania

  • This review is well worth I almost feel I can smell them and I am dieing to test because I love both Iris and violet.
I’ve not tried this house before but they sound wonderful I am more Drawn to the violet shot if I had to pick.

I live in the USA thank you for the giveaway!

  • I’m not generally a fan of florals, but I am a fan of Dominique Ropion (Geranium pour Monsieur and Vetiver Extraordinaire are both regulars in my rotation). I’d give these two scents a go based on Ida’s review, and the review has definitely pushed me into checking out Olfactive Studio. Thanks for the review and the draw. I’m in the US.

  • Good review by Ida I do like the phrase when earthy meets unearthy. Would love to sample these samples. I live in USA. Thanks.

  • Only tried and own 1 fragrance from Olfactive Studio, Still Life. This one sounds great. I do enjoy iris. I’d like to try both but Iris Shot interests me a bit more. Thanks, US

  • Dubaiscents says:

These are two of my most anticipated releases from all the new launches at Esxence. I appreciate hearing how Ida feels about them, especially the Iris Shot and it’s “bread-like” notes. It is really difficult to pick one I would like to try more as I love both Iris and Violet. Thank you for the chance to try these before they are released! I live in the US.

  • Michael Prince says:

Great review of Olfactive Studio Iris Shot and Violet Shot from the Sepia Collection. Both fragrances sound good. The Iris Shot sounds good due to the spicy Cardamom and creamy Almond notes. Violet shot sounds good because of the Vanilla and Resinous base. I will go with Violet shot appealing more to me since I have more Iris fragrances currently. I am from the USA.

  • They both sound beautiful with gorgeous floral notes. I’m most drawn to Iris Shot because of that almond note.
    I live in the US.
