NY NOW Summer 2021 Press Badge – Hernando Courtright
This year’s NY NOW Summer 2021 Edition successfully relaunched August 8-11, 2021, and kicked off the reopening of the newly expanded Jacob K. Javits Convention Center’s main convention hall. It’s been over a year and a half since I last attended any fragrance/ beauty events which were all put on hold due to Covid-19 restrictions. So when NY NOW announced it was going forward with its Summer 2021 Event it was with much anticipation and a little bit of trepidation I signed up to attend. I have attended this event for a number of years and always look forward to it, especially the Summer Shows. NY NOW is the modern wholesale market for those seeking diversity and discovery. Held twice a year the show is for qualified buyers and press only. Trade shows like this one are business-to-business events, and the need for businesses to do deals is paramount to the local economy. So with a number of big events on its schedule for the rest of the year, things were looking up. Then on August 4th, just days before NY NOW was to start, with Covid-19 cases rising, the popular New York International Auto Show’s organizers canceled so I was uncertain if this show would go on at all. Covid protocols were in place with attendees instructed to fully comply with applicable CDC, state, and local health official guidelines relating to COVID-19 and all current health and safety measures and protocols. While there was no vaccine mandate, signs were posted at the entrances to mask up or depart.
NY NOW Retail Summer 2021 at the Jacob Javits Center in NYC
The Market Layout was all on the Third Floor and divided up into eight sections. The exhibitors appeared all to be American with a good number locally and a fair amount from the West Coast. Unfortunately, due to international travel restrictions, the majority of fragrance and beauty brands I’m used to seeing were not exhibiting. I’m hopeful this will change for the NY NOW Winter 2022 Show, February 6-9. The Wellness Section was where the beauty, candles, and wellness products were stationed. CBD held sway throughout. And with so many new brands, mostly female-owned and mostly in the wellness category showing resolute to exhibit there was much to take in.
While researching all the brand’s websites I noticed that many have dedicated charities they donate funds directly to or contribute gifts-in-kind. To those, we salute you!
