Noteology Citron Pomelo Review (Danielle Fleming) +  A Refreshing July 4th Draw

Danielle Fleming of Noteology

Danielle Fleming is the perfumer for Noteology Citron Pomelo

American Perfumer and entrepreneur Danielle Fleming is the Founder & CEO of Noteology, and Olfactif.  We have met attending various Sniffapalooza Events where we became fast BSF (best-scented friends). Danielle had mentioned that she pursued creating fragrances through training at Cinquieme Sens and the Fragrance Academy of the Fragrance Foundation and later as an analyst at Firmenich.

Danielle launched Noteology, based in Scranton, PA in 2013 where there is a blending studio that offers one-on-one sessions, private perfume-blending parties, and fragrance education classes. In my recent conversation with Danielle, she mentioned that she uses organic perfumer’s grade alcohol from organic corn as a base along with natural isolates and aroma molecules that give her a full range of scents to use in the blends. She uses a high concentration of natural essential oils but if an ingredient is unavailable or is too costly, she will source natural isolates and aroma molecules made in a lab. She sources locally as a first option. Bravo!

So what is a pomelo? Is it a grapefruit? Well, yes and no. Pomelos are the largest of all the citrus fruits. While grapefruits are round, pomelos are tear-dropped shaped and are the principal ancestor of grapefruit. The smell is similar. I thought it would be interesting to do a side-by-side comparison with both so I tried four large supermarket chains searching for pomelo and zilch. Two told me to check back next month! Are they seasonal? Apparently not, but not so easy to come by.

Noteology Citron Pomelo review

Noteology Citron Pomelo by Hernando©

In musical terms, sometimes Pink Floyd just won’t do, one needs the Ramones. The same holds true with fragrance. There are times when a heavy complex fragrance is not what’s needed. but one that’s appropriate for the moment. With temperatures reaching into the mid  and high 90’s in New York City, this citrus-based scent was a lifesaver cooling me down as each day I walked the steamy streets of Manhattan. Citron Pomelo raised my spirits out of the inferno of an especially brutal summer in the city.

The first spray is just like a much-needed blast of air-conditioning. Fresh, calming, and uplifting. A pick me up. So approachable. As citrus-based fragrances go, it has better than average longevity. Citron Pomelo lasts over four hours on my skin. The smell is natural and top notes of pink pomelo, sweet orange, and passionfruit give off a subtle sweetness that keeps the citrus from getting bitter. The middle and bottom only assist in framing the big picture. It is called Citron Pomelo for after all. So, if the heat is on, you know what to reach for.

Notes: pink pomelo, sweet orange, passionfruit, lychee, frangipani, white peach, damask rose,  benzoin  black amber and cottonwood

Disclaimer: Many thanks to Noteology for my bottle of Citron Pomelo. The opinions are solely my own (and no one else’s!).

  • Wow citruses, and references to the Ramones. This sounds like a great summer scent. Could even reference the Office! Too much for one day. In Maryland.

I liked Harnando’s attempt to distinguish between grapefruit and pomelo. Although they are very close, they do taste different. Citrus fragrances can sometimes be boring and overly familiar, but this sounds like it is done with enough care and attention to detail to be good. I like the idea of supporting perfumers who are not located in fashion centers! In North Carolina in the US.

  • I wasn’t aware of pomelo much before reading Hernando’s review of Citron Pomelo. It does seem to be a perfect summer scent. Not aware of this brand, but like the fact they try to source natural and organic ingredients whenever possible. Appreciate the generous draw. I am in the USA.

I enjoyed reading about the citrus fruit pomelo. It was nice to read that Citron Pomelo has good lasting power, since citrus fragrances often don’t have good lasting power. Also, being born and raised in PA, it was cool to learn that Noteology was launched in Scranton, PA. I’d love to win a bottle of Citron Pomelo and try the discovery set as well.

  • The musical reference was spot on! Fun in the moment vs gravity. I subscribe to Olfacif and adore Danielle’s Santal Woods. I’d love to receive the Citron Pomelo and discovery kit. (Citrus is a summer passion). In NC USA

  • Thank you, Hernando, for this wonderful review & singling out a gorgeous fruit! I love pomelo. It is an important part of Chinese New Year customs (it is also in season for that holiday, bringing its lift of energy in the depths of winter as well). My husband is Chinese-American & he explains that gifts of pomelo communicate wishes for prosperity & good luck (I think we can all use some after this past year). The way you describe Noteology’s Citron Pomelo sounds invigorating and perfect for the hot days ahead!
Danielle Fleming’s creations and her special care with materials sound amazing! ❤️ I love that she is interested in sourcing materials locally and that she has experience at Firmenich. We here in Iowa have Carmi Flavor & Fragrance, fascinating work with the science of scent. (Personally, I don’t feel there is a right or wrong way to make perfume, but I dislike taking away tools from artists, whether that be IFRA regulations, climate change, etc. The artist should chose their parameters, imho). Natural isolates, aroma chemicals, & organic alcohol are all fascinating. I would love to win Citron Pomelo! More than that, I would love to travel to Scranton & have some one-to-one, private blended, perfume education classes! I just signed up for my first Olfactif Niche Fragrance Box! Thank you, CaFleureBon! Where else would I learn about such amazing people! USA

  • I love that Hernando chose to write about a Noteology fragrance that I regularly wear. I’m from Northeastern PA, and Danielle is our hometown perfumer. Through Olfactif, she’s been very supportive of my brand. (I’m also a perfumer.) For fragrance lovers, there’s Paris, New York, San Francisco, and yes, Scranton, PA!

  • A refreshing fragrance is definitely needed during these warm, muggy nights. I would enjoy a few spritzes of Citron Pomelo after a day of playing in the dirt in my garden. And a shower, lol! Thanks for the opportunity! Mich USA

Lots of interesting things. This comparison made me laugh out loud – Citron is to pomelo as Pink Floyd is to the Ramones. Sniffapalooza? Brand new info! I want to visit… Scranton? The sounds like a big citrus scent, perhaps softened by some white floral. Located in Louisiana, USA.

Like Hernando, I also live in an urban area that can get really hot and stifling, so this cooling & uplifting fragrance sounds lovely to me. I’m in the USA.

  • Thelstrhi says:

I love the description of the heat in the city, it’s definitely its own special type of feeling. I’m in the US

  • What a perfect scent to uplift and cut through the heat! The addition of passion fruit sounds like a delicious touch. Also appreciate the thoughtfulness about sourcing ingredients. Thanks for the chance to enter this draw!

  • wilsonwc76 says:

Oh, I love a pomelo scent! My parents have a pomelo tree in their front yard and I love to stand next to it in the spring and summer and inhale its scent. It bring back so many memories. I would be so excited to smell this one! And I love that it has a high concentration, because citrus scents don’t often last very long. I’m in NYC.

  • GennyLeigh says:

I didn’t realize there was a difference between Pomelo and grapefruit!I do find citrus scents refreshing in the summer and grapefruit/pomelo seems to provide that not too sweet zing to fragrances. Love the Ramones reference! Commenting from MD, USA.

  • “a much-needed blast of air-conditioning” — being in Los Angeles, i want it NOW 🙂

    harper (usa)

  • This sounds so uplifting and refreshing!!! And I have been wanting to try some fragrances from this perfume house. And what’s so exciting is they are in Scranton, PA, which is less than an hour from my house! I follow them on Instagram and it looks like such a great shop! I would love to win a bottle of this!
I live in PA – USA.

  • Pomelo is one of my favorite citruses, definitely better than grapefruit. They are easy to find at the asian grocery stores. The notes sound beautiful and definitely crisp and refreshing for those hot summer days. I live in the USA. Thanks for the giveaway!

  • Wonderful article about a wonderful business! I am an Olfactif subscriber, and I shop in the Scranton location ~ awesome to see a local business featured. Danielle is amazing, and the scents she creates are heavenly, especially her citrus and berry fragrances. I love the information about the pomelo, and your description of summer in the city!!

  • Love fragrances with citrus. Always reminds me of Summertime. This sounds perfect. Thank you for teaching us the difference between fruit. Great review and read.

  • I loved the description of the refreshing citrus walking through NYC. I have been there many times! The place I am living now is just as hot and humid in the summer. Cheers from North Carolina.

  • I love the way Hernando makes me feel like I’m at the beach with these descriptors; such a beautiful way to smell! I am located in Virginia in the US and would love to try the discovery set.

  • I love a good citrus scent but currently I own none. I guess I have been looking for something a bit more unique. A Pomelo scent would be something new for me. I like that Hernando said that the middle and base notes only “assist in framing the picture.” This sounds refreshing. Not too much for this time of year which is exactly what I’d want. I would love to win this one. Thanks for the giveaway. In the USA.

Always I am on the hunt for fruity/citrus fragrances that don’t come off as fruit salad. This one sounds delightful and a four-hour longevity is what I need in this weather. How very generous of the perfumer to offer both a full bottle and sampler. I would love to become acquainted with this brand. USA

  • I appreciate learning more about Danielle Fleming: I didn’t know that she is a perfumer, and I remember that she is the owner of Olfactif. I appreciate discovering Noteology and I appreciate learning more about pomelos. I would love to try “Citron Pomelo”; Danielle Fleming seems like she makes high-quality fragrances. I live in MD., U.S.A.

Thank you for the beautiful review Hernando.

With the temperature and humidity reaching the point where you can bake a loaf of bread outdoors and end up with an excellent crust, this sounds like a beautiful and refreshing fragrance.

I really love how this is a good mix of citrus, sweet elements, white florals and rind bitterness to take things in interesting directions.

It reminds me of Guerlain Pampleune.

    Cheers from WI, USA

Hernando, I’m glad that you had something to help you get thru those blistering NYC streets.

What I enjoyed about the review is such statements as “The first spray is just like a much-needed blast of air-conditioning. Fresh, calming, and uplifting. A pick me up.” and “The middle and bottom only assist in framing the big picture. It is called Citron Pomelo for after all.”
