Nicolaï Parfumeur Créateur Poudre De Musc Intense Review (Patricia de Nicolaï) 2021 + Exclusive Interview Draw

Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur Poudre De Musc Intense review

As it was first announced on Çafleurebon July 25th, Nicolaï Parfumeur Créateur will be releasing a new fragrance in the beginning of September 2021, a prominently musky, fruity/floral scent named Poudre De Musc Intense. This will be the House’s third musk-centered creation after Musc Intense and Musc Monoi (musk is, of course, included in several other Nicolaï fragrances, albeit less dominantly). Even though currently on vacation, the French House’s founder and perfumer, Patricia de Nicolaï, kindly agreed to discuss her new fragrance with me.

Nicolaï Parfumeur-Créateur Poudre De Musc Intense review

Senior Editor Despina Veneti: Thank you for taking the time to talk about Poudre De Musc Intense, Madame de Nicolaï. I’d like to know why you chose to add one more musk-centered fragrance in your collection, and how different was your handling of the musk note this time.

Patricia de Nicolaï: It’s a pleasure to discuss the fragrance with you, Despina! Musk is certainly one of the most  widely used notes in perfumery (most fragrances contain it), and one with a vast variety of effects – ranging from animalic to clean. My Musc Intense, in which I combined musk with rose and a pear note, has proved to be one of our best selling fragrances – even so, some of our clients have been urging me to create a scent that would be even more overtly musky. I took inspiration from the original formulation of White Musk by The Body Shop, but my creative aim was to incorporate a similarly intense and clean muskiness in a more sophisticated, delicately floral composition with fruity touches. A scent where the musk would be strongly present throughout each stage of its evolution. I am personally very pleased with the result; I was happy to receive enthusiastic feedback from my team, including my son Axel, who is my closest collaborator.

Axel de Nicolai is the son of Patricia de Nicolai

Despina Veneti: How closely do you work on your fragrances with your son, Axel?

Patricia de Nicolaï: It’s been a blessing having Axel on board for the last seven years. He has contributed his expertise in global markets and sales (he has worked for years in the fragrance industry, for perfume conglomerates like LVMH, L’Oréal and Interparfums), while his managing and organizational skills helped us enormously to develop and expand worldwide. Furthermore, he is a valuable aid to my creative process: not only does he provide artistic inspiration and ideas, and suggests types of fragrances that can be added to our collection, he is also my scent evaluator – and an excellent one at that.

Despina Veneti: Please share with us some details about the composition of Poudre De Musc Intense, especially regarding the titular main note.

Patricia de Nicolaï: I used no less than four different musks for Poudre De Musc Intense, and my greatest challenge was to make the note dynamically present not only at the base, as usual, but also at the top. For that I used Helvetolide®, a relatively light-weight musk that can manifest in the top notes. Additionally, it has a soft, round effect that I wanted for my florals. I added three different aldehydes to emphasise the muskiness, blended with caution and a “light hand”, since they are materials that always need careful handling. Among these synthetic notes rises a natural floral heart, dominated by elegant rose and cosy orange blossom. For the subtly powdery feeling I wanted, I added an aubépine (hawthorn) note; since no natural raw material can be derived from the plant itself, I used Anisaldehyde which helps recreate a satisfactory hawthorn note. I added some fruity touches that compliment the flowers, and finished my composition with the sweet woodiness of sandalwood next to the white musks, ensuring the fragrance’s long trail.

Despina Veneti: Poudre De Musc Intense is the first Nicolaï release of 2021, and comes at a time when the global pandemic has left us all tired and drained, even physically and/or psychologically affected. Has this health crisis played any role in the creation of this particular fragrance?

Patricia de Nicolaï: I had started working on the idea of Poudre De Musc Intense even before the pandemic broke, but as I was finishing it I realized that it is a scent that can resonate with many people right now: it is a fragrance that is neither difficult nor eccentric, but one that aims to comfort and uplift. I think that lots of perfume lovers currently gravitate towards such fragrances, and I hope that Poudre De Musc Intense will meet their needs and bring them joy…

Fulfilling its creator’s intention, Nicolaï Parfumeur Créateur Poudre De Musc Intense radiates its easy-going, cocooning energy from the moment it touches the skin: an enveloping cloud of clean musks, softly-hued and nectarous, generously diffuses notes of jammy rose and sugar-sprinkled orange blossom. Fruity touches embellish the two main floral notes: ripe raspberry highlights the rose’s inherent fruitiness, while an invigorating cocktail of mandarin, bergamot and petitgrain enhances the sunny citrusness of the orange blossom. The almondy, powdery floralcy of hawthorn creates a gauzy effect that mellows out the aldehydes and musks, while unifying the other flowers into a bouquet. The muskiness, ever-present in the fragrance, progressively reveals nuances of ambrette-like skin warmth; when the woods of the base emerge (mainly, creamy Indian sandalwood from Australia) accompanied by ambery undertones, the musks enter their long, vanillic drydown stage. Nicolaï Parfumeur Créateur Poudre De Musc Intense evokes all sorts of comforting, soothing images and sensations: crisp bedsheets fragrant with the scent of luxurious fabric softener; pastel skies with cotton candy-like clouds; or a silk scarf caressing one’s face as it dances with the wind, carrying a scent of serene elegance.

Notes: Aldehydes, Orange Blossom, Rose, Hawthorn, Vetiver, Oakmoss, Musk, Sandalwood.

Disclaimer: A 30ml pre-release bottle of Poudre De Musc Intense was provided by Nicolaï Parfumeur Créateur – my thanks. The opinions are my own.

  • Woohoo! I am a huge Nicolai fan and this one sounds absolutely fantastic. I enjoyed the direct quotes from Nicolai in this review. I enjoyed learning about her son, Axel. I love fruit and powder fragrances I will definitely need to check this one out. My favorite Nicolai is New York Intense. Thank you from Canada.

  • I love Nicolai fragrances, especially Cedrat Intense ! I am intrigued by this sentence: “pastel skies with cotton candy-like clouds..”. Sounds amazing!!
    US

  • Great interview. Despina asks such intelligent questions that really highlight both her and Patricia’s incredible knowledge of perfumes. A fun read! I have only tried New York Intense by Nicolai thus far. A few days ago, in fact. It was great. Cheers from NC, USA.

  • Wow! How amazing to have Patricia de Nicolaï describe her composition & thought process!!! ❤️ Going back & forth between Despina’s gorgeous description & Mme. de Nicolai’s composition notes is amazingly informative! I really can’t wait to experience this scent on my own skin! I am especially intrigued because I came of age into “generation white musk” as I’ve always jokingly called it. So many girls wearing The Body Shop’s White Musk. Mme de Nicolai is right, it’s a good scent, but not elegant. The only version of “white musk” (I’m actually not really sure, technically, how that is defined) that I wore was Armani’s White for Her. I would be so fascinated to see that idea of “white musk” really made into “serene elegance.” ❤️ If anyone could do it, I’d place my bets with Patricia de Nicolaï! I have a list of Nicolai scents that I want to own, but I’m waiting until I go back to Paris to visit friends, A friend lives near a boutique in the 17th, but we might go to Richelieu! Thank you so much for this opportunity! USA

  • It was interesting to read about Patricia working with her son. And she is correct about musk being in almost everything. But a light floral musk, with the musk present all the way through, I’ve yet to try. I don’t think I’ve tried any Nicolai fragrances. I am in the US.

  • I really enjoyed Despina’s description of Poudre De Musc Intense, Cloudy, gauzy, pastel skies and so on, are what I have been looking for in a Musk fragrance. Moreover I am so grateful for uncovering some of the creative processbehind this perfume. At the moment I only tried two of her creations, Fig Tea and Angelis Pear and the first one was my favourite. From EU.

  • I enjoyed the fragrance presentation and stories behind it the most. I think Poudre De Musc Intense is my favorite. I live in Poland, EU.

  • Uplifting and comforting, a clean musk perfume – Nicolaï Parfumeur Poudre De Musc Intense seems to be a lovely perfume. Enjoyed reading how the perfume was designed by the perfumer and why different ingredients were chosen. Haven’t tried anything by this brand, yet, so no favorites. Thanks for the review and draw. I am in the USA.

  • Another great interview Despina. learning about Nicolai was a real treat. I do love fruit and powdery scent. I do hope to try this new fragrance . USA

  • What a creative yet comforting undertaking. Musc as a top note! But we all love musc so much. It is truly a comfort note and one we are all drawn to. In maryland.

  • realtyisme says:

As a dad/grand dad, I appreciate the family aspect of this article. It truly is a blessing to be able to work with your children. I believe in addition to the talents both Patricia and Alex have, there is also a sense of realness in this process, which will show in their creation. I cannot wait to experience this fragrance. The notes sound fabulous. My favorite Nicolai fragrance is Cap Neroli. US

  • Dubaiscents says:

It was wonderful to hear about this scent from Patricia herself! It was interesting that she started with the original, and cult favorite, Musk from The Body Shop as inspiration. I do agree that we could all use a comforting scent these days. My favorite Nicolai fragrance is Une Temps de Fete (just found a back up bottle since it’s discontinued). Thank you for the draw. US

  • My father signature scent is called New York Intense , and it’s made by Parfums de Nikolai.I do like it on guys in their late 40s and above.
What we have in Poudre De Musc Intense is clean musk, elegant rose , cozy orange blossom, and sandalwood .
Happy fragrance I could wear on a walk with my daughter, but also at work.
    Thank you
Back and forth between USA and Scotland, two weeks in US -> two weeks in Scotland. Basically both USA and UK at the same time

Loved the interview. I like the fact that despina asks smart questions that really highlight both her and Patricia’s incredible knowledge of perfumes. A fun read! I have only tried New York Intense by Nicolai thus far. A few days ago, in fact. It was great. From PA, USA.

  • The only one I know from this house is New York Intense and it is a very special and classy fragrance for every man who considers himself a gentleman!
Poudre de Musc Intense, however, seems to be perfect for the ladies!
    Thank you from Europe!

  • ElenaChiss says:

Interesting to read about the process of creation. I like how musk is overdosed in this fragrance: ‘I used no less than four different musks for Poudre De Musc Intense, and my greatest challenge was to make the note dynamically present not only at the base, as usual, but also at the top.’
Thank you and good luck to everyone!
Eligible for the EU bottle as I am commenting from EU

Notes: Aldehydes, Orange Blossom, Rose, Hawthorn, Vetiver, Oakmoss, Musk, Sandalwood. I am living all the notes I am drawn to this fragrance because of its comforting and uplifting nature. My favourite from this house is Patchouli sublime. Thanks a lot from the UK

  • From a house with such a long tradition and heritage, with a nose so talented, I am expecting only great things! Unfortunately, I do not have the experience I would like to have with Parfums de Nicolai, but I plan on ordering a sample set soon to test more.
Poudre de Musc Intense sounds lovely and easy to love. Thanks! EU

  • Patricia de Nicolai is such a highly dedicated woman ,with a chip on her shoulder. Over 30 years of making fragrances, and still have the flame in her for creating new things, and expanding? Admirable.
Poude De Musk I think it would be easy going , yet classy tea fruity floral, with musky sandalwood base.
To me Parfums de Nikolai equals New York Intense , period ! As a barber I always have the 250ml in my shop . It’s not a new size like the article from a few days ago stated, it’s new to US market.
I’m happy the big boy is now officially available in US.
    Thanks for the giveaway

  • Fraghead Summy says:

What i loved the most about the interview was how patricia described the composition of Poudre de musc intense . It not often that just by reading you can get a glimpse of how the fragrance must be smelling like but she chose the best words to describe it. Never tried any other frag from this house , this will be my first if i win 🙂 From USA

  • I enjoyed reading the detail behind how musk was achieved throughout the evolution of the new fragrance. But as much, I love that it seems to be such a comforting scent after the past long months of uncertainty. I have not tried any Nicolai scents so far but would like to. NC USA

  • emorandeira says:

The interview of Despina has been for me, as all the thing of her that I have read before, just great. I LOVE to see how Patricia de Nicolaï is very honest when she describes the compositions of the perfume, speaking about the real products she has used and not only about accords or feelings. I like how she describes the powderiness of the fragrance and It is great also when Despina asks about the difficulty of realeasing new products Under the current worldwide situation.
Sadly I have not tried any Nicolaï fragrance yet but I am sure I Will dice that brand keeps lot of my attention, and Poudre de Musc is a great way to begin.
I live in Tenerife (Spain, Europe), my name is Edgar and my id parfum_sindromico.
Congratulations to the blog for a great new post, to Despina for her interview and to Patricia de Nicolaï for this génerous giveaway!

Everybody loves a good musky fragrance, with sandalwood and vanilic drydown , what i’m expecting from Poudre De Musc Intense
My first encounter with Parfums De Nikolai was when i sampled New York Intense in mid 2015,and bought it right after …yes i know i was super late to the party . As a HUGE Bois du Portugal fan for many years i was impressed by the smell, quality , longevity, projection, sillage …. fantastic fragrance and a must have for me.Nothing beats it …. at this price range.
32th anniversary of Parfums de Nikolai is coming soon, as far as I can remember late September , such a milestone for independent brand.
My congrats are not only to Patricia, but to all Parfums de Nikolai employees, and especially to Axel de Nikolai. He pumped huge amount of fresh blood into Parfums de Nikolai. Just a few years back PdN were known as mature mens brand. I’ve been to PdN boutiques ~dozen times, and honestly I’ve never seen a customer younger than me, and not young myself haha
Definitely the brand is going into right direction
Vanille Tonka , and New York Intense are my favorite Parfums de Nikolai fragrances
Thanks to Despina, and Parfums de Nikolai
    USA only…for now

  • Thanks for the interview. I am a musk lover in the Narciso Rodriguez style, but I am really excited to try a more refined version in the Nicolai style. I am a big fan of Parfum de Nicolai’s New York Intense, so I trust the perfumer with fuzzy white comfort zone musk that I crave.

Thanks so much for the draw. In Canada.

  • I loved the part about the inspiration for the fragrance and its place in these turbulent days. PdN is one of my favorite houses. My favorite is Le Temps d’une Fete with Odalisque a close second. I live in the United States. Thanks for the drawing.

  • I appreciate Patricia de Nicolai’s artistry in so many of her perfumes. This fragrance sounds warm and enveloping and still opulent with sparkling florals. So happy she has an opportunity to work with her son, Axel. My favorite Nicolai scent is New York Imtense. I’m in MD, USA.

  • DulciusExAsperis says:

From the Nicolai line I have only tried Musc Intense but really enjoyed it; I’d be thrilled to try Poudre de Musc. The part of the interview about perfume lovers craving comforting scents right now really speaks to me. Lately I’ve wanted to be surrounded by a cloud of feel-good fragrance and haven’t been in the mood often for something that’s too challenging as often the world is challenging enough in its own right. I’m in the USA.

  • Despina asked all of the right questions, very informative and really sparked my interest. Once I saw rose as a note I was instantly happy. This sounds like a beautiful composition. US

  • Fragrance Capital says:

Hey Despina, gorgeous interview as usual. You’ve never steered me wrong when it comes to one of my favorite notes…Musk 🙂 By the way, this is my 1st introduction to this house. Thanks for this unique presentation, I enjoyed the direct quotes from Nicolai in this review. I’ll have to get my nose on all her fragrances, and especially Poudre De Musc Intense. Cheers from Sarajevo, BiH

  • I liked this part very much: ‘Nicolaï Parfumeur Créateur Poudre De Musc Intense evokes all sorts of comforting, soothing images and sensations: crisp bedsheets fragrant with the scent of luxurious fabric softener; pastel skies with cotton candy-like clouds; or a silk scarf caressing one’s face as it dances with the wind, carrying a scent of serene elegance.’

I have several de Nicolaï creations such as patchouli intense, ambre cashmere intense and Eau d’ete and very curious about this new Musc version.

  • esperessence says:

Very insightful interview of the process of creating Poudre de Musc. It sounds like a fragrance people could use right now, uncluding myself. What I love about this interview is that some aromachemicals are discussed used in this fragrance like Helvetolide® and anisaldehyde. I have been a fan of Mme Nicolai for years and my most worn fragrances are Juste Un Reve and New York Intense. Love the Maharadjah scented candle too. Many thanks from
    Amsterdam, The Netherlands

  • I enjoy powdery, musk and vanilla fragrances and this promises some of that. My fave from this house is New York. US

  • IvanVelikov says:

Poudre De Musc i think is natural smelling joyful musky aldehydic , with woods and pinch of fruitiness. Casual fragrance done well.
I had the pleasure of visiting one of Nikolai Parfemeur Createur boutiques in Paris and the one that impressed me the most was Cuir Cuba Intense . End up buying 100ml bottle for €171. Not sure if the price is still the same.
    Thank you all
    USA, rarely Paris France

  • I love the description of the flowers that are unified in a bouquet while the hawthorn creates a almondy and powdery effect. Sounds like a beautiful fragrance, right up my alley. I haven’t tried anything from this house yet. Thank you for the draw! I live in Sweden, Europe.

  • I have been a huge Nicolai fan since my wonderful husband and I wandered into her shop near Palais Royal in Paris. I left with 3 perfumes that I have replenished often and that remind me of this special anniversary trip.

Please consider me for this wonderful offer.

  • I forgot to mention that I am in the US and my favorite Nicolaï perfumes are Sacrebleu intense and Cap Neroli

  • What I love about Despina’s columns is her deep and thorough explanation of the notes. Every author at CaFleureBon brings a different skill to their columns, but I always know I can rely on Despina’s interrogation of a perfume’s constituent parts. And I loved that Patricia Nicolaï met that enthusiasm with her answers!

My favourite Nicolaï fragrances – hard to choose, as I’ve recently been going through the discovery sample set! Musc Intense is appealing, Number One Intense has a tuberose opening so beautiful it nearly brought me to tears, but I think my favourite is New York Intense, somehow both extremely 80s and completely contemporary, delicious and inedible at the same time.

  • It was very interesting to read about the different kinds of musks Ms. Nicolai used in this scent and the fact she used the Body Shop’s Musk, one of the most famous cheapie staples, as inspiration for her fragrance. That was unexpected! Lastly, the description of the process she used to reach the final layered result was very detailed and interesting.
I live in Europe and my favorite Nicolai is Baikal Leather.

  • Kim Alexander says:

The part I enjoyed most was when they were discussing how the perfume is meant to be comforting and uplifting and to evoke joy. My depression has been rough and I found that certain fragrances evoke a sense of joy and give me a second to forget about everything else while I inhale the fragrance.

  • Claumarchini says:

What an interesting interview, thanks Despina! I have read so much about Parfums de Nicolai, I would love to try this new frangrance! I am always interested in knowing how the different materials are used together in order to make them interact and… work the magic out!! It is particularly intriguing the use of musks everywhere in the pyramid, would love to be the lucky winner! Greetings from Italy

  • Thank you for the review, Despina. Poudre De Musc Intense makes me visualize being wrapped in a cloud. A fragrance like that gives me a safe feeling. How perfect that it was made during these trying times. I would love to smell how the 4 musks change throughout the life of the fragrance. I found the description of the composition most interesting. Thank you to Patricia for the interview. It’s always exciting when we get to hear from the creators. I have not had the chance to try any Nicolai fragrances. In the USA.

What I enjoyed about Despina’s review and discussion with Patricia de Nicolaï. I loved the interview and learning so much about the creation of the new release Nicolaï Parfumeur Poudre De Musc Intense. I love musky fragrances and I love how Patricia used a molecule called Helvetolide so musk is felt throughout the life of the fragrance…even in the opening. My favorite Parfums de Nicolai fragrance is New York Intense. I am from the USA.

  • Thank you Despina for the review and the interview with Patricia de Nicolaï. It’s always great to have the perfumer’s reasoning behind their creations and it sounds like Poudre De Musc Intense would indeed provide comfort in these tough times. I’ve been meaning to get New York Intense for a while now. I’m in USA

  • I love, love Despina’s reviews because I always find out interesting facts from this industry, ingredients and the whole process of “giving birth to a fragrance”.

This was the most interesting fact for me in the discussion: “For the subtly powdery feeling I wanted, I added an aubépine (hawthorn) note; since no natural raw material can be derived from the plant itself, I used Anisaldehyde which helps recreate a satisfactory hawthorn note.”

Thank you, Despina, Patricia and Nicolaï Parfumeur Créateur for the generosity and the chance! Musk and powdery fragrances, in general, are my favorite type of scents.

    I am entering from EU.

  • My favourite part of the review was the discussion with Patricia de Nicolaï, especially the part where she describes the composition details in Poudre de Musc Intense. I love the idea of having musk as the top note as well as in the base notes as we are used to.
I have yet to try the fragances of this house, so if lucky, this would be my first one.

    I live in Spain, EU

  • Andreea Elena Timofte says:

“It is a fragrance that is neither difficult nor eccentric, but one that aims to comfort and uplift…”said very nicely Patricia de Nicolai. I always like musk as it is clean….and a better version of the Body Shop one??? But 4 times Musk???AMAZING!!! I live in London, UK.

  • Great interview. It’s always enlightening to hear the inspirations from the creator herself. It sounds very pretty and comforting. I have only tried New York Intense, and it is perhaps the best in its genre. I have high hopes for this one. I live in Denmark, EU.

  • Musk.. Great review & interview!! And happy to see that the pandemic didn’t slow nobody here down!! Can’t wait to smell it, big fan of most of these notes, very intrigued!! Musc intense thanks & good luck everyone!!! Ohio USA

Thank you for the beautiful interview Despina. It’s really fascinating to read about her vision and your take on the fragrance and how the two compare.

I’m also very appreciative that she mentioned some of the ACs used in her creation.

Makes me think of the good old Kiehl’s Musk.

  • Musk, Rose and Pear sound really appealing and I am curious to experience this new offering from Nicolai Parfumeur Createur.

  • NituNicolae says:

I am very excited to sample Nicolaï fragrances, the review was very well put together with regards to comparison of the notes with emotions. Thank you for the giveaway. I live in Europe.

  • Poudre De Musc Intense is business meetings fragrance in my opinion. In such occasions I can’t wear some loud, sweet, or woody fragrance. Clean, close to the skin, smelling good fragrance is what I’m expecting.
I used to spend a lot of time in Paris, and it’s a shame I never visited Parfums de Nikolai boutiques. Next time I’m going to Paris, late Autumn, early Winter, I’ll pay them a visit.
    Nuce giveaway, USA

  • This is definitely a fragrance house that I’ve been wanting to try for a while now, but I haven’t yet. I, especially, have been wanting to try New York Intense because I’ve heard that it is similar to Lalique Pour Homme EDP, and I love that Lalique fragrance. This interview helped me to have a better understanding of: this company, musks (and other ingredients used in perfumery), perfumery, and this fragrance. I found this interview to be informative. I live in MD., U.S.A.

  • Despina take on Poudre De Musc Intense reminded me of eating French Orange Blossom Cake , with ripe raspberries on top , and enjoying time in some small village in French countryside.
I’ve sampled 3 Nikolai Parfemeur Createur fragrances , Vanille Tonka , Neroli Intense and Angelys Pear. Even though there’s way more incense than vanilla and tonka , I like Vanille Tonka the most
Appreciate the review, the interview, and the giveaway campaign
