New Perfume Review: Thierry Mugler Les Exceptions Cuir Impertinent + The Scent of a Success Draw

In 2014, Thierry Mugler released five fragrances, Les Exceptions Oriental Express, Chyprissime, Fougère Furieuse, Supra Floral, and Over the Musk. As the names may suggest, each fragrance pays respect to a particular classic genre of perfume: Oriental, chypre, fougere, musk and floral and were composed by Olivier Polge and Jean Christophe Herault. This year, as homage to leather, Cuir Impertinent debuted signed by Jean Christophe Herault.

Disruptive, Addictive, Unexpected. Bringing a new olfactory experience to fragrance. The smokiness of tanned leather meets the unexpected explosion of star anise to create a unique scent. Perfume yourself with bold, brazen sensuality”. – via Thierry Mugler USA Website

Mugler Les Exceptions Cuir Impertinent

Cuir Impertinent is a simply constructed scent made from star anise, tobacco, amber and leather.  The whole is greater than the sum of the parts and a few notes have come together to create a big perfume.  The tobacco here is the big leaf variety, best suited for a Cuban stogie, and the leather is the kind of fine-grain black leather one usually encounters in board rooms and wrapped around the back seats of expensive, foreign cars.  The star anise isn’t overpowering– you’re not suddenly huffing fresh black licorice.  Instead, it makes the tobacco note feel as it it’s been lit already, and perhaps a little ash has already gathered at the end of your imported goods.

The amber note is subtle, and hovers underneath all of the other drier notes to impart just a slight hit of smoky, caramelized sweetness.  I’m glad the amber is present in this scent, as it makes Cuir Impertinent an excellent choice for woman. The best aspect of Cuir Impertinent is how rich each note is in this fragrance is rich, there’s nothing cheap or synthetic smelling in Thierry Mugler Les Exceptions Cuir Impertinent.

This is without question a scent for those who expect the best in everything, crave power and devote a great deal of their time in acquiring it.  If you want to smell like a mogul, buy this blind.   The star anise in the top notes when blending into the tobacco in the heart again create a bone dry, almost sour tang in this scent that is reminiscent of long rambles out in the marshy back forty or a deep forest preserve rather than a smoky, crowded bar in Manhattan.  There’s a pensive, thoughtful feel to the traditionally masculine touchstones in this fragrance – this perfume isn’t an aggressive, blast of leather and rubber like Bulgari Black and not as Viva! La Revolucion! as Nicolai’s Cuir Cuba Intense.

This is a fragrance for a man or woman who’s done climbing the ladder of success and has reached the top.   Nothing to prove; quiet elegance and good taste has become their legacy. But lest you think this is a fragrance for a CEO Emeritus, Cuir Impertinent has the power and sillage of a scent 30 years younger.  This may be a thoughtful, pensive scent but you will listen raptly to every single thing it decides it wants to say.

For those of you who have run the gauntlet of the Thierry Mugler line and its vast universe of Angel, Alien, Womanity  and A-Men spinoffs, Cuir Impertinent is your reward.  Cuir Impertinent is impertinent in the best possible way: because nothing is more in your face than outlasting your competition and living incredibly well.

  • What a fabulous review!! Of course, I’d like to smell the whole series, but this tobacco note loving gal (who has made her own star anise tinctures) undoubtedly will love Cuir Impertinent! Pam definitely got the point across that this one smells of success, lol!

Angel is not only my favorite Thierry Mugler scent, but it is quite possibly my favorite fragrance of all. I like Alien quite a bit as well. Pam’s description of the richness of the notes has convinced me I need to try this, as did this: “If you want to smell like a mogul, buy this blind.” The five samples I would like to try are Cuir Impertinent (obvioiusly!), Fougere Furieuse, Over the Musk, Chyprissime, and Oriental Express. I’m in USA.

As I suspected this line departs from Mugler’s mainstream line. here the focus is not on monster sillage but subtlety. I have one from their previous exclusive line which has been discontinued and that line also focused on minimalism. my favorite Mugler creation is Pure Havane though Angel extrait comes close. in this line, i would like to win Cuir Impertinent. thanks a lot for the draw. I am in the US

  • Years ago, in a farmer’s market, a woman walked by smelling incredible! I asked her what she was wearing. She said it was this new perfume called Angel. I have loved it since! It is beautiful! Pam wrote a lovely review and I like this most of all: “For those of you who have run the gauntlet of the Thierry Mugler line…….Cuir Impertinent is your reward.” The ones that interest me the most are Cuir Impertinent, Supra Floral, and Oriental Express. USA

  • My favorite Thierry Mugler is A Men A taste of Fragrance. I wish I could be a mogul so smelling like a mogul would be great. Just loved that photo of Usher, so suave. I would love to try Fougere Furieuse, Oriental Express, Chyprissime and SupraFloral as well as Cuir Impertintent. My favorite part was “This is a fragrance for a man or woman who’s done climbing the ladder of success and has reached the top”.

I appreciate Ms. Barr’s specificity about the notes: what kind of leather, what kind of tobacco, etc.
My favorite Mugler is A*Men Les Parfums de Cuir (aka Pure Leather) so naturally I am excited to try Cuir Impertinent.
The others I would choose to try are Over The Musk, Oriental Express, Chyprissime and Fougere Furieuse.

  • I believe I’d like them all to one degree or another. I would like to win the Fougere Furieuse. My favorite Mugler is Angel (on a woman). The description paragraph by Pam is well done. USA

  • Sounds like Mugler has done it again! Although I don’t think of myself as a power seeker, the notes in Cuir sound right up my alley…especially the tobacco. As always, thank you for another thoughtful review. I can hardly wait to pick up samples of these bad boys!

  • Jessica Stewart says:

My favorite Mugler depends on my mood. I have the Miroir Collection and just about every flanker to the original Alien, Angel, and Womanity, Mugler is my signature HOUSE! Unfortunately they don’t have samples of the new collection near me and I’m dying to test them as they’re quite expensive to buy blind, although I highly doubt I’ll be disappointed! Thank you for this opportunity!

  • This sounds so fabulous, I love tobacco and anise and Mugler. Such a great review, too- I can see, feel and smell the lush tobacco and what better black leather is there than what’s wrapping around the back seat of a luxury car….makes me want to roll down the windows and drive really fast. Thanks for another great draw! My favorite Mugler is Angel Les Parfums de Cuir. I’m in the US.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

What a great draw! I love the sound of all of the notes. As controversial as some of them are, I’m a big fan of Mugler’s scents. I am always draw to Cologne on days when I just don’t know what to wear–it’s a great catch all. But have a big soft spot for Alien Liquer de Parfum and AMEN Pure Havane. I’d love to sample Cuir Impertinent, Oriental Express, Chypressime, Supra Floral, and Fougere Furieuse! I’m in the US

  • I like many from Mugler. Can’t say I really have a favorite. I am interested to see what Mugler does with star anise in this new Cuir Impertinent. I’d love to sample all five though. Pam’s way with words has the Cuir Impertinent coming across as a must try. 🙂 U.S.

  • Everyone has heard of Angel, which although it is lovely I prefer something more often the beaten path, so I do not own it. I am not a fan of fragrances that have a lot of floral. I have been searching for a tobacco fragrance since losing my brother (and only sibling) earlier this year. He was a cigar smoker and want a “hint” of a reminder. So, am most intrigued by Cuir Impertinent. Thanks!

  • girasole638 says:

This sounds incredible – I love the idea of marrying tobacco and leather with star anise. And I always crave smoky amber scents in fall weather. My favorite Mugler fragrance would probably be Alien Essence Absolue, and if I won this great draw I’d be most interested in trying Cuir Impertinent, Over The Musk, Oriental Express, Chyprissime and Fougere Furieuse. I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • Nice review, Pam! You’re really making me want to try Cuir Impertinent. Notes sound wonderful.
My favorite Mugler perfume is Alien.
Thank you for the draw! US resident

  • My favorite Thierry Mugler perfume is Angel. I’ve never known of a fragrance that evokes such loathing and love. I enjoyed Pam’s review and her rich descriptions have me imagining “long rambles out in the marshy back forty or a deep forest preserve”. Of the five Les Exception samples, I’d most like to try Cuir Impertinent.

  • Lovely review! I’m intrigued to smell star anise and tobacco mix in fragrance. Cuir Impertinent appeals to me most. My favorite Mugler is A Travers Le Miroir.
    Thank you! USA
