New Perfume Review: Parfums de Nicolaï Ambre Cashmere Intense (Patricia de Nicolaï) + Amber Waves Draw

Patricia de Nicolaï of Nicolaï Parfumeur – Créateur

One of the few niche perfume brands who as eschewed the “let’s sell it for more” price increase craze is Nicolaï Parfumeur – Créateur, (Parfums de Nicolaï) composed by Master Perfumer Patricia de Nicolai  who has offers a range of perfumes with something for everyone at very reasonable prices. For over 25 years, they have been available in 30ml/1oz flacons as well as 100ml sizes, which gives fragrance lovers wonderfully crafted scents that don't break the bank.

The new release, Ambre Cashmere Intense, feels emblematic of Mme de Nicolaï’s brand; it includes a touch of the well-known, and her love of amber accords.  It is great quality, easy-going and the name on the bottle describes it perfectly. Nicolaï’s perfumes are instantly pleasing, delightfully wearable and Ambre Cashmere Intense fits right into the brand’s range.

The opening is lightly peppery with enough citrus notes, that for a moment I wonder how this can become ambery or even intense. It’s light and pleasant, almost like a fresh breath of autumn air. The sweet creaminess from the iris butter with the base notes of tonka bean and vanilla already peeping through makes for an incredibly cozy development. I wouldn’t call it powdery, but it has a fluffiness to it, which differentiates it from most herbal ambers. The spices too, are kept at a minimum; it’s the light-handed pepper from the opening and a bit of clove to bridge the pepper into the heart of the perfume, without actually sticking out. Although by no means linear, there’s a comforting predictability in the development, a seamlessness which weaves an intricate cashmere pattern of top to heart notes and from heart to base, and every little in between too. Ambre Cashmere Intense has no sharp corners and no unpleasant surprises on its journey which ends on amber-coloured cashmere cushions of labdanum, benzoin and vanilla.

The ‘Amber’ in Ambre Cashmere Intense translates to cozy and elegant, like slouching in a silk pajama with a bowl of homemade fudge in front of a fireplace, rather than herbal resins, embers and campfire, or even souks and oriental fling. Ambre Cashmere Intense is one of the most feminine ambers I’ve come across, and with its generous amounts of orris butter and vanilla and tonka. Ambre Cashmere Intense is a must-try for those who enjoyed perfumes in the style of Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue,  Nicolaï Parfumeur – Créateur Vanille Tonka,  Francois Coty L’Origan,  Stephane Humbert Lucas Khol de Bahrein,  Teo Cabanal Alahine, or for anyone looking to add  new comfy favourite to their autumn and winter collection.

Editor’s Note:  We are thrilled that Jasia has returned to ÇaFleureBon as a Contributor after a three year hiatus.  One of my favorite articles in our five plus years is Jasia's Passing of Winter, Schubert Wineterreise and the 100th Birthday of Guerlain's Heure Bleu (a wonderful synchronicity, Patricia de Nicolaï is the great-granddaughter of Pierre Guerlain and niece of Jean–Paul Guerlain the last family member to run the House of Guerlain). Jasia is an Opera Singer and a  music lover so  after reading her review I immediately thought of  including Tori Amos Amber Waves. Be sure to read Jasia's beautiful blog,  where her reviews are adorned with her own hand illustrations and collage artwork.

Thank you for the review, Jasia, and welcome back! I would love, love, love to win this because I’ve been searching for a signature amber, and this, with all that gorgeous orris, sounds like THE ONE! This line is new to me, so this perfume could well become my favourite and introduction to exploring the rest of the line. I live in Canada — thanks for the draw!

  • madeleine gallay says:

Amber is mysterious, beautifully earthy, peppery and earthy. Reaching for suede thigh high boots, a chunky knit sweater and everything very soft. A beautiful review. Thank you. I’m learning the language of perfumery, its stories and would love to try this. USA.

  • Mrs. MacDonald says:

Well this is awesome! Welcome back Jasia! Hmmm, my favourite has to be Maharani, effervescent and always makes me feel happy and very much like a woman. I would love to have the Ambre Cashmere as I’ve been looking for it, but alas can’t find it sold in Canada, so this was a very happy happenstance! I guess I just told you that I live in Canada! Cheers and thanks for the chance!

  • I’d love to win Ambre Cashmere Intense because amber is my favorite note for Fall. Bienvenue (welcome back) Jasia! <3 My favorite de NICOLAÏ fragrance is Cedrat Intense. Sending fragrant love from Palm Springs, CA USA!

  • This scent sounds like it would be warm and cozy and fluffy to envelop me over the autumn months. Even the name denotes a comforting feel on the skin. I’ve not had the pleasure of trying any Nicolai scents, but hopefully this is my chance. Greetings from the UK and thanks for the draw.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Welcome back Jasia! This sounds amazing, particularly the combination of orris and vanilla with the amber (the mention of Khol de Bahrein didn’t hurt either). This is all to preface that I’m just a huge fan of Nicolai in general! New York, Amber and Rose Oud (and their total lack of oudness) and Vie de Chateau (both versions) are my tops for the house! I’m from the US and thanks for the draw.

  • I love Patricia de Nicholai’s perfumes. My favorite from Parfums de Nicholai is Le Temps d’une Fête. The other one of hers that I love is her Un Coeur en Mai for Parfums MDCI. I have little doubt that I would enjoy Ambre Cashmere Intense. I have just branched out from florals to ambers, so this is very timely. Welcome back Jasia. Your blog is beautiful. I have it bookmarked! USA

this fragrance looks so much classical in nature from your description..the citrusy opening and later morphing into a warm scent like Coty’s L’Origan. Plus it also has a healthy amount of orris butter. Quite intriguing because Ambre Cashmere Intense seems inspired from the past rather than the present. thanks a lot for the draw. I am in the US. and I agree Parfums Nicolai has done a great job of maintaining their tradition and not jumped on the bandwagon of overpriced offerings. My favorite creation from the house remains New York which i have both in modern and vintage version.

  • I’d like to win this because, “The ‘Amber’ in Ambre Cashmere Intense translates to cozy and elegant, like slouching in a silk pajama with a bowl of homemade fudge in front of a fireplace…”. 🙂 My favorite is Kiss Me Tender. U.S.

  • This sounds lovely, like all PdN scents are! I’ve never found a house whose scents intrigued me more, and I can’t wait to get a sample of this one. It sounds like a perfect scent for fall and winter.

  • Elizabeth T says:

What a generous draw!! This review really made my ears perk up, especially the part, “one of the most feminine ambers I’ve come across.” All too often, ambers turn very masculine on my skin, and are more aggressive than comforting. My favorite PdN is Kiss Me Tender, which reminds me of something from my childhood but I cannot for the life of me name what it is. Anyone else have this sensation??

I am in the USA. Thanks again for the draw. And welcome back, Jasia! I look forward to more lovely articles from you.

  • Welcome back Jasia! and what a great way to start your journey here again.

I love Nicolai’s perfumes. My favorite is probably Odalisque. So elegant and chic. The weather is starting to get cold now and I think Ambre Cashmere will work perfectly for this fall weather. I can’t resist a good amber perfume.

I live in Canada. Thanks for the draw.

  • Welcome back, Jasia, and thanks for the review! I enjoyed your descriptions of the notes, how well rounded the perfume is and how elegant yet simple it is, which is why I want to win. The small bottle availability and lower price has enabled me to fall in love with several Nicolai perfumes, my favorite being Vanille Tonka which is my HG vanilla. Many thanks to the Nicolais and CaFleurebon for the generous opportunity! I’m in the US.

  • Welcome back Jasia.
I love Nicholai’s perfumes and I like Nicholai’s personality too, she is independent and talented. Nicholai is not only a perfumer and she’s also a successful businesswoman. She is always full of creative ideas and as for her creation, she has something for everyone too.

My favourite fragrance from Nicholai is Rose Oud,would like to try her new creation Ambre Cashmere Intense as well.
I live in Malaysia and thank you for the draw. 🙂

  • I have read a lot about this line, unfortunately they do not carry this at my preferred shop (Perfume House – Portland, OR). I would love to try this. I love vanilla that is not quite true vanilla, so blended with amber would be divine. My favorite fragrances are best for the fall/winter and we have long cold seasons here in the Portland area (with the exception of this year) so I am looking forward to the cozy scents and would love to add to my collection. Thanks.

  • Welcome back Jasia!!! Well I would love to experience Amber Cashmere for its notes, I want to experience how vanilla blends with iris butter, Tonka beans and amber the warm outcome of this mixture must smell divine and very weather appropriate reminding me of cozy winter nights by the fireplace with good friends a truly feminine creation.
I never had the pleasure to enjoy a perfume from Madam Nicolai and I would love to
I am a registered reader living in EU.
Thank for this lovely review and draw as well!

  • Bienvenue Jasia!
The combo of tonka beans and iris butter sounds awesome! I have only tried Kiss Me Tender, it was really nice and delicate, I’m curious to try some other ones.
    Thanks! US resident

  • Welcome back Jasia!!! I just love everything amber and tonka. From Nicolai i only tried Fig Tea but it was a long time ago…! I live in EU. Thanks for the draw

  • Welcome back Jasia! I have enjoyed your blog in the past. I like the Nicolai line. It has an easy going vibe and doesn’t seem to take itself too seriously, while still being a part of French heritage in the perfume world. I like ambers, but only in the winter. They bring up a complicated feeling in me, someday I’ll figure out the root of these feelings. I love Le Temps de Une Fete from the PdN line. I am in the USA. Thank you!

  • Iuno Feronia says:

Wonderful Review of a perfect scent for this part of the year! I love Amber in autumn. I live in Europe. Thank you!

  • Welcome back, Jasia! Your blog is GORGEOUS!!! I adore ambers and that’s way I’d love to win this one!! I haven’t tried many Nicolai frags but I do own a bottle of Vie de Chateau and wear it during the summer. In the US. Cheers!

  • Wonderful review. I have never had a chance to try any of any NICOLAÏ perfume yet. I would very like to win Ambre Cashmere Intense, because from the review, it sounds incredibly good. I’m a registered reader. I live in Europe. Thanks for the chance.

  • One of my favorite perfume is Vanilla Tonka, and although Jasia feels this is a feminine fragrance, I really love amber perfumes. “The opening is lightly peppery with enough citrus notes, that for a moment I wonder how this can become ambery or even intense. It’s light and pleasant, almost like a fresh breath of autumn air. The sweet creaminess from the iris butter with the base notes of tonka bean and vanilla already peeping through makes for an incredibly cozy development.” What a great description. I live in Canada and my favorite Nicolai perfumes are Sacre Bleu, Amber Oud and Cedrat Intense. Very nice blog, this The Sounds of Scents

  • I like peppery openings which Ambre Cashmere Intense is said to have. And I’m a fan of vanilla bases. My favorite PdN is New York (vintage). USA

  • It sounds like a lovely fragrance and I want to try it. I am in Canada. Thanks for the chance.

  • bunchofpants says:

I feel like such a n00b whenever I have to say I’m not familiar with the perfumer being profiled … but it’s true yet again. I can’t say which of Patricia de Nicolai’s fragrances is my favorite because I don’t know. I’m generally a fan of the ambery scents I’ve tried, so Ambre Cashmere would probably be a great place to start my discovery of Madame de Nicolai’s work. Also, it’s lovely to be introduced to Jasia; I have added to her blog to my “fragrance” feed! I’m in USA

  • I love cozy fall and winter fragrances, and PdN does them very well. Sacrebleu and Vanille Tonka make me happy. I would like to try this one. I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • What a lovely way to celebrate the fall season with this draw…thank you very much! I love warm amber fragrances and have never tried any of the Nicholai’s fragrances. This sounds absolutely lovely. I live in the US…Mount Wolf, PA to be exact. Thanks again!!

  • I love PdN, and I love Amber! I also love Vanille Tonka, so I would love to try this perfume. I am in the US, thanks!

  • I am a big fan of Parfums de Nicolai and amber would hit the spot with this fall weather. My favorites from this wonderful house are Weekend a Deauville and Le Temps d’une Fete. I am in the U.S.

  • I am not a big amber fan but love the house of PdN and would love to try their interpreting of amber. My PdN faves are temps d’une fete sacrebleu and #1. Thanks very much for the drawing.

  • lovethescents says:

Oooh, now I haven’t tried a PdN in ages as we have no stockists in this country, but this sounds right up my street! I adore cozy, comforting ambers, particularly during our very long winters. Thank you so much for this opportunity!

  • girasole638 says:

Welcome back, Jasia, and thank you for the review!
I’d love to try Ambre Intense because I’ve made it a goal to seek out a new amber fragrance for the coming fall season. I haven’t tried any PdN fragrances, but it’s not for lack of desire! Hopefully one day I’ll manage to sample some – otherwise, I’ll be grateful for the 30ml size when I’m blind buying! The ones that interest me most, based on notes alone, are Le Temps d’une Fete, New York, Vanille Tonka and Kiss Me Intense. I’m in the US and I’d really love to try something from the house of Nicolai!

  • welcome back, Jasia, glad to see you back, here
would love to try Ambre Intense because of the “more feminine” vibe, Jasia mentioned
Mme de Nicolai is a wonderful person and I appreciate most of her work- Weekend a Deauville is my fav

  • Welcome back Jasia. It’s autumn and I’d love to find a comforting yet silky and not too resinous amber and the combination with orris butter and tonka sounds lovely. My favourite Nicolai is Mimosaique which is out of production. I live in the EU. Thanks for the draw.

  • Cozy, snuggly, smooth, scent is just the thing, now that there is a bite in the air and that’s why I would like to win Amber Intense! My favorite s from DoN are Sacrebleu Intense and Vanille Tonka. I am in the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • Bienvenue Jasia! The cozy elegance of Ambre Cashmere Intense greatly appeals to me. I want that feeling, the warmth of it as the days grow colder and shorter. My favorite PdN is Kiss Me Tender. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the US.

  • Great review and welcome back! I would like to win this fragrance because it sounds really warm and seems like a nice cold weather scent. I haven’t tried anything from this house yet. Thanks for the draw! Canada

  • Bienvenue! Wow what a toasty scent this is! I can imagine cuddling up with a book while having a nice hot cup of hot cocoa wearing this fragrance. As others have said, Kiss Me Tender is my fav scent from the house. I do look forward to trying others though.

I’m an international reader (Canada). And thank you for the draw!
