New Perfume Review: NICOLAÏ L’eau Corail + Tropical Magic Draw

Patricia de NICOLAÏ, Parfumeur

Patricia de NICOLAÏ the nose behind the eponymous French niche perfume house NICOLAÏ wrote in her interview with Michelyn for Çafleurebon that she loves to make Eau Fraîche fragrances as they always inspire happiness. With L’eau Corail, I wanted to conceive a dynamic fragrance full of contrasts, both fusing and smooth like the velvety of the peach skin. It invites you to a vacation on a faraway tropical island drowned by sunlight and turquoise blue waters. The facets of this Eau Fraîche submerge you with a radiant light and an invitation to the land of sweet life." The perfume combines a sumptuous medley of fruits and fresh herbs in the top notes, a floral heart and a spiced woody base to create a delightful and uplifting fragrance brimming with sunshine

Mme de Nicolai sure does know what floats my fragrance boat! There was never any doubt that I was going to enjoy the fruity/fresh notes in L'eau Corail, but I was genuinely surprised by this perfume, for several reasons. Firstly, I was expecting a bright and splashy opening, similar to that of a cologne. In actual fact, the first few moments of L’eau Corail are like submerging oneself in a vat of ripe mango pieces. It's a sticky, juicy, delicious impression that had me almost salivating from the start. The development is as one would expect for a short while; tart blackcurrant to balance the sweet mango; Petit-grain and orange to add sparkle. But then arrives a cool blast of mint and pepper that offsets all that sticky fruit beautifully. The pepper is especially clever. I don't overly enjoy it in fragrance but here, however, it is needed to give the ripe, unctuous fruit some sophistication. The fragrance almost seems to firm up and grow womanly curves.

The role of the base notes in L'eau Corail particularly impressed me. The perfume struck me initially as having the potential to fall to bits after half an hour, like a mango sorbet left too long in the sun. The woods and spice in the foundations of the fragrance stop that from happening, so much so that I was continually catching drifts of scent all day long and continually wondering where it was coming from. You see, L'eau Corail changes subtly throughout its life on the skin, starting out as a flirtatious fruit and ending as a sultry spiced cocktail. The juicy opening is cooled by the mint and pepper, then warmed into a different form with the use of Osmanthus, cardamom, sandalwood and Amber. These notes meld the fruits into an almost boozy concentration, deepening the bright tropical hues. Don't misunderstand me, it's still a happy, sunlit fragrance, but as Patricia De Nicolaï intended, it's also one of great contrast.

Of course you should try this if you can't resist a fruity fragrance, there's no way you'll be disappointed by that incredible opening mango hit. I would also encourage those of you who spend winters wreathed in boozy, spicy scents to give L'eau Corail a go for summer. All the depth is there, just wearing a headdress overflowing with ripe fruitiness. Life is sweet and happy indeed when one is crowned by a bright cloud of L'eau Corail. .

  • Good afternoon and thank you for the draw!
Patricia de Nicolai my favorite perfume. This is a very talented woman, a happiness that she has its own brand! My favorite perfume is Vie de Chateau, Le Temps d’une Fête, Odalisque. Last time I was impressed Cuir Cuba Intense.

Eep, A new summery NICOLAÏ?! I would love to try it. My favorite NICOLAÏ is Eau d’Ete but only by a narrow margin.
I’m a sucker for fruity happy scents (there are several in my collection that are so non-perfumista I won’t admit to them) and I love the breezy sparkle of her eau fraiche scents. I can’t think of a good juicy mango perfume in my collection and now I know I need one, especially if the drydown is boozy-spicy.
I’m in the U.S. Thanks for the draw!

  • BlessedTA says:

The description of the fragrance and I really like the pictures – very vibrant.

Thanks for the chance, I’m in Canada

  • The mango note sounds very appealing. My favourite Nicolai perfume is Kiss Me Tender. Thanks for the draw! I’m in the EU.

  • Your review makes this perfume sounds so delicious. I love mangoes and it sounds perfect for summer. I have not tried too many PdN’s perfumes but of all the ones I’ve tried, Odalisque is the one I fell in love with.

Thanks for the draw. I’m in Canada

  • I don’t think I’ve tried a mango perfume yet, and the combination of mango, mint and pepper sounds really interesting. Actually it makes me want a mango mojito! I’ve only tried one PdN scent so far, so no favorites yet! Thanks for the draw, I’m in the US.

  • Systeme D says:

While I would not normally be so drawn to a fragrance with a big mango opening, Susie’s review is careful to note that the mango in Eau de Corail is tempered by pepper and mint. That got my attention.

But it’s the heart that really appeals to me: osmanthus! sandalwood! and my beloved cardamom!

I just know I would love this fragrance. And I think Patricia de Nicolai is so brilliant. My favorite of hers so far is L’eau Mixte.

I live in Chicago, IL, USA! Go Blackhawks!

Thank you so much for the draw! This sounds absolutely amazing – I love fruity fragrances, and Susie’s review makes it sound like a very realistic fruity scent with “sticky” juicy notes. 🙂 I am in the US, and I love PdN fragrances – my favorite is probably Sacrebleu.

I am intrigued by this perfume because it has ingredients that have been used in classic fresh fragrances such as petitgrain but also those that have become hallmarks of modern fresh creations such as mint and blackcurrant. my favorite creation from the House of Nicolai is New York which I have in both new and older formula. thanks so much for the draw. I am in the US

  • Marcopietro says:

It sounds great! A cheerful mix of sparkling and toning notes. I like many Nicolai creations. My favorite and latest purchase of this perfume house is Cedre Intense.
Thanks for the draw! I’m in the EU.

  • Susie’s recommendation of this perfume to those of us who like boozy, spicy scents in the winter has grabbed me, and I loved the mango in Neela Vermiere Bombay Bling. Nicolaï is one of those houses where so many things sound wonderful that I don’t know where to start. (With this one, I suppose!)

  • I liked NICOLAI on Facebook. I very like Susie’s review. It was very good to read. I have never tried any of NICOLAÏ perfumes. I would very like to try this perfume, sounds wonderful. Thanks for the draw.
    I live in Europe.

  • This new eau fraîche sounds lovely! I’m a sucker for anything tropical and sweet so I would love to try this! So far my favorite of the house has been Vanille Tonka. I’m in continental Europe.

  • I love to wear a well done fruity perfume in summer. The problem is that so many are not well done. But with PDN you know you will be getting a quality perfume. My favorites from the line are La Temps de Une Fete and Fig Tea. I’m in the USA. Thank you for the review and draw.

  • Really fantastic review and I loved the photos. I have so many perfumes from Nicolai but Eau Soleil is in heavy summer rotation. I usually don’t like fruity perfumes but Eau Corail sounds irresistible
    I live in the U.S.

  • Claire spriggy says:

I’ve only just had the chance to try Musc Monoi and I love that one for summer. I’d love to try L’eau Corail, the idea of something so juicy balanced with pepper, amber and sandalwood sounds immense. I need to try more summery scents as I’ve over indulged in heavy gourmands this winter! I’m in the UK. Thanks for the draw.

  • tomate farcie says:

I like how Susie describes what she thought would happen at the opening and what did happen. My favorite is Le Temps d’Une Fête. I’m in the US

  • Fruity fragances are not my favourites but those here ara appealing for me: mango?? yes! My favourite Nicolai is Vie de chateau!
    I,m in the EU. Thanks.

  • Valentine Girl says:

I loved how Susie described how L’Eau Corail “changes subtly throughout its life on the skin, starting out as a flirtatious fruit and ending as a sultry spiced cocktail.” I find it appealing that the scent is fresh & fruity in the beginning, but things gradually heat up as time goes by (like a day in the tropics), until the scent is warm & spicy! I love eating fresh mangos with a few grinds of black pepper, so I am excited by these notes in the composition–yum! I haven’t had any experience with the PDN line yet to have a favorite, but I would be very happy to have L’Eau Corail be the first. I live in MD, USA.

  • Donna Spiegel says:

I enjoyed reading this, because I immediately felt like I was away on a mini vacation, first sipping a luscious tropical drink, and then being cooled off by a wonderful trade wind. Ahh, perfect combination. I recently was delighted to be turned on to Musc Monoi, and instantly fell in love – ordered a full bottle. This also sounds right up my alley for this time of year. Would be delighted to try. Thanks so much for a wondeful article, and for the draw. I’m a registered reader. 🙂

  • Francesca says:

Lov e the way Susie really pulls this fragrance apart for us, almost as if we are partaking of a feast, a mango feast. Never pretty when one attacks the Mango this fruit is not for the delicately minded. It’s lush it’s messy with an almost heady decadence that makes one swoon…so it can’t be pulled apart, it must simply be adored as is its right. Sounds like this perfume totally portrays this sentiment and pays this royal fruit its rightful homage! I’m international and must add I Love The Mango in any form, shape or size! Never had he luck to try Susies perfumes before.

  • Susie’s review made this sound like such a happy festive scent that I am determined to find a sample immediately. My favorite Nicolai fragrance is Le Temps d’Une Fete. I am in the U.S. Thank you for the draw!

  • I am in the US. I am intrigued by the transformation from a flirty fruit to a seductive spiced cocktail. I love Nicolai and my favorite is Odalisque.

  • L’Eau Corail sounds like such a happy perfume, and a bit of an antidote to the grey weather we are having here. I love the description of the exotic fruits and the pictures are perfect!
My husband wears New York, but I have not yet found a Nicolai for myself.
    I am in Australia.

  • I love mangoes in the summer. Mango is a king of the fruits as agreed by many in certain parts of the world. Green fruity freshness that lingers on, count me in. I agree with you fresh fragrances tend to make everyone happy and joyful. I haven’t tried anything from Nicolai yet but hear so many good things about them. Would love to win it.

    Thanks USA

  • Dubaiscents says:

In not usually a fan of sweet fruity scents but, the use of pepper and osmanthus and cardamom sounds really interesting. I love so much of this line but my favorite would have to be Le temps de une fete. I would live to try this one. I’m in the UAE.

  • The review of this is honest – and I like mango! At least in a Hermes fragrance. I honestly can’t imagine the notes in a Nicolai scent, so very keen to try. I am in the US. Thx for the draw.

  • I love that she makes this perfume sound colorful like many of the Nicolai perfumes are. My favorite is Fig Tea also a favorite of my coworkers when I wear it. It appeals to everybody. I am excited and looking forward to eventually trying it. I am in the US and appreciate the opportunity.

  • Nice review! L’eau Corail sounds delicious! I am intrigued by the list of notes. My favorite Nicolai is Vanille Tonka.

I am in the US, thank you for the draw!

    liked Nicolai on Facebook.

  • rodelinda says:

I never knew that L’Eau Corail had mango and mint, but it sounds nice for summer. My favorite PdN is the old Sacrebleu, and I’m in the US. Thanks!

  • Susie’s description of this “sultry spiced cocktail” appeals to me. I live in the U.S and have not yet had the pleasure of wearing a NICOLAÏ perfume.
    I LIKE NICOLAI on Facebook

  • I love the energy and enthusiasm of Susie’s review! Her saying that it has “womanly curves” tell me that Corail is a fragrance for grown-ups and not teenagers! I’m not familiar with any Nicolai fragrances, but this sounds like a great place to start! I live in the US and have liked Nicolai on FB.

  • I have never ever tried anything from Patricia de Nicolai, and I am really eager to do so! Even more, I am not much fond of fruity, and especially tropically fruity fragrances – most probably because I haven’t found my fruit cup-of-tea! Since I am really fond of mango, sorbets, and mango sorbet, I should fall for Eau de Corail!!!
Thank you for the chance! I am in Bulgaria (EU).

  • I absolutely love mango, especially used in fragrances! I love the sound of it and it sounds like a great scent for the warmer weather. I have not tried anything from this house but I will definitely consider it in the future

    I’m in Canada

  • Fruity scenty always make me so happy. They’re so bright and fresh and always energize me throughout the day. I have not tried any fragrances from the house :(. Canada
