Fiore di Bellagio Bottle

Last year Shelley Waddington of En Voyage perfumes collaborated with ÇaFleureBon Editor-in-Chief Michelyn Camen, to create Zelda . The perfume was inspired by the life of Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald, the talented, tempestuous wife and muse of author F. Scott Fitzgerald, who dismissed her artistic and literary accomplishments throughout their marriage. En Voyage's Zelda was a prizewinner and a big hit with  fragrance fans. This year she decided to go deeper into the world and history of the First American flapper and think to about fragrances from the Roaring 20s that Zelda might have actually worn. She chose the iconic Caron Bellodgia, composed by Ernest Daltroff, 1927. Fiore di Bellagio takes its cue from Caron Bellodgia, but it is not a replica. Ms. Waddington wanted a similar vibe to that presented in Zelda; a modern twist on a bed of vintage. It has an opening zing of citruses on a bed of sumptuous ylang ylang, like an olfactory amuse-bouche to open up your senses. As the carnation, enhanced with spices and the richest of florals, throws its arms open wide, the sillage bursts forth like a song and you are lost in a swoon. Women smoked back in the flapper age almost just to have a sexy prop, and I can almost smell the smokey addition to the sensuousness of the perfume. The spiciness of carnation weaves throughout the drydown, tossing out wafts of darker, more resinous and animalic aromas. Longevity is great; I put it on two evenings in a row and in the mornings could smell a trace.

I love many of Ms. Waddington’s perfumes but I think this is her finest creation to date. Sitting on my sofa letting this lush, complicated perfume float around me, was blissful.
