New Perfume Review: Anya’s Garden Strange Magic (Anya McCoy) 2017 + Enchanted Colors Draw

The Magic Circle John Williams Waterhouse

Natural perfumer Anya McCoy has a new perfume, (her first  since 2015’s Enticing), and like its namesake, Strange Magic, it is akin to a magical love potion, effusive, narcotic, and utterly enchanting. Intensely concentrated, two sprays were enough to make my head spin and my imagination soar to new and unforgettable heights.

Frank Cadogan Cowper  Titiana Sleeps

When I finally came back to earth, it was in a fantasy moonlit leafy bower not unlike the magical location as described by Oberon in William Shakespeare’s  “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, a play I fell in love with and memorized cover-to-cover in fourth grade….

“I know a bank whereon the wild thyme blows,

Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows,

Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine,

With sweet musk-roses and with eglantine.

There sleeps Titania sometime of the night,

Lull'd in these flowers with dances and delight;”

-A Midsummer Nights Dream, Act ll Scene 1, William Shakespeare

Anya McCoy of Anya's Garden

Strange Magic is the first perfume to be composed of approximately 95% organic fragrant tinctures,  and these tinctures reveal hidden colors in the flowers, leaves, and roots when  placed in alcohol. I’ve tinctured for herbal purposes for forty years, and for perfume purposes for twenty years. It wasn't until I dropped snow white Champaca flowers into alcohol a few years ago and saw the alcohol turn pink, then red, then dark red that I realized there were hidden secrets in some flowers – Strange Magic.” -Anya McCoy

Magic indeed.

Exquisite colors in this painting by the pre-Raphealite painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti Marigolds 1874

Let’s start with the color, since the color of the tinctures and it's hypermutable nature is so integral to the creation process and development of Strange Magic. In the bottle the liquid looks thick and lush, with an almost deep Imperial Topaz color; a golden brown shot thru with a near black blood-like vermillion. Like a luminous liquid dark chocolate: glossy, rich and unctuous. Once aerated through the spray it is colorless on the skin, but does show a very slight taupe tint on white cloth. The scent itself is quite linear and that’s an extremely good thing, you want this perfume to stay just as it is upon first  application. Lush, intoxicating, an almost hallucinogenic surfeit of the white flowers which dominate and entice. White Champaca yes, but so much more when supported by creamy Ylang, indolic Jasmine, and a gardenia note that is simply breathtaking. In the first few minutes, the dusty hay and slightly absinthian bitterness of the chamomile mix with the sweetish and saline notes of the ambergris to lend depth and body to the abundance of florals.

Priestess of Delphi by John Collier

Rich, fulsome, tropical and humid, Strange Magic has it all. In spades. A dazzling liquid incantation that shimmers and gleams as softly as the wing of a dragonfly. Nothing “Strange” about it actually. Just magic. Perfumed magic.

Notes and corresponding color: Chinese Perfume Tree: yellow flowers (Dark amber tincture), Orris: pale white rhizome (Bright coral, orange tincture), Chamomiles: white flowers (Blue oils when distilled), Gardenias: white flowers (Dark amber tincture), Jasmines: white flowers (Deep amber tincture (some, not all), White Champaca: white flowers (Crimson red to dark red tincture),  Ylang ylang: yellow flowers (Olive green to dark green tincture),  Cashmere Bouquet: white flowers (Deep red tincture), Vintage white ambergris from Vanuatu (Orange tincture)

Disclosure: Thank you so very much to Anya McCoy for supplying the sample. The opinions are my own.

-Art Direction: Michelyn Camen, Editor-in-Chief (I chose all Pre-Raphaelite paintings… to me they are magic).

  • I have been anxiously awaiting the debut of this, since I first heard about it. The idea of using mainly tinctures to construct a perfume is a fabulous idea. ” Lush, intoxicating, an almost hallucinogenic surfeit of the white flowers which dominate and entice” sounds like Anya’s tropical garden. I generally like flowers that are pink and orange. I live in the US.

I am intrigued because it is 95% made of organic ingredients and it feels like thick oily perfume. My favorite color flower is rose. I have not tried anything from Anya’s Garden yet. I am in the US.

  • Wow. What a review! This was my favorite part.

My favorite color flowers are like a deep purple/blackish color. I have not tried any of Anya’s scents.
I live in the U.S. Thank you for the very generous giveaway!!

  • I hadn’t realized before that the beautiful quote in the post was from A Midsummer Nights Dream. A perfume that reflects that should be amazing. I never would have guessed the colors of the tinctures that the different flowers turn into. I think dark blue to purple flowers are lovely. I have not tried any Anya’s Garden Perfume. In the USA.

  • White flowers are definitely the ones that speak to me aromatically, but there are some bright orange ones in a garden nearby that are stunning to look at.

I’m afraid I haven’t much experience of Anya’s perfumes, but this one sounds excellent.

  • The part of the review that appealed to me was the description of the liquid itself, which is often not mentioned in reviews. It gives the reader more depth into the scent. Growing up in Hawaii, my favorite flower is the pikake, which is a type of white jasmine. I haven’t yet had the pleasure to try any of Anya’s creations, sorry to say.

  • I loved how Robert uses the words “saline” and “humid” in reference to the perfume! My favorite color of flower? I love all them all but am partial to bright orange/red, vivid pinks and chartreuse yes green flowers. My favorite from Anya’s Garden? Royal Lotus!

  • VerbenaLuvvr says:

I think it is fascinating that there are hidden properties of these flowers, just waiting to be revealed by an expert hand. Thank you for introducing me to this perfumer, whose work I have not yet become acquainted, but perusing the Anya’s Garden catalog, I am enticed by Pan and Kewdra. As per my favorite color of flower, the blues of full tide iris and delft delphiniums in my flower garden are those I most highly prize. I live in the US. Thank you for this chance.

  • ntabassum92 says:

Beautiful review, I also love how you described the color of the liquid – also a very magical part of perfume that often is not described. I think I love red flowers most. The color is just so eye catching. I have never tried an Anya’s Garden perfume. I would love to! Thanks for the chance to 🙂

  • I liked the discussion of the changing nuances of aromatics. I like how it was discussed in color, and how that allows greater thought on how influential that may be to the psyche. I have found myself, most recently, drawn to white flowers. They hold such confidence in their ability to draw upon and release the lunar essence. I have not tried any of Anya’s Garden Perfumes, but would love the opportunity to sample her Strange Magic.

  • Thanks for review. it is amazing that this perfume conains 95% organic fragrant tinctures. I hope it smells beautiful, although many bloggers NOT fall in love with natural perfumerie. I’ve never tryed natural perfume and any Anya’s Garden Perfume.
I like pink and red flowers.

Robert’s reviews can make me feel as though I can almost smell the fragrance about which he is writing. Strange Magic sounds magical and I hope I get this opportunity to smell it. I love almost all scented flowers, so picking a color would be impossible. I have not sampled any fragrances from Anya’s Garden. Thanks for the draw. I live in the USA

  • I have seen pictures of Anya’s tinctures and wondered what magic she was making. Now I know – Strange Magic. Can’t wait to try it out!

  • I am intrigued by Robert’s lush description. Mind altering fragrances? I want to experience that! I live in Dallas and have tinctured a grape colored wisteria from my backyard only to have its color appear a bright orange! Favorite flower color? Red. Favorite Anya perfume? River Cali.

  • claytanna says:

Fascinating idea to make a perfume out of tinctures. I love the description of how the flowers turn different colors in tincture. I guess my favorite color flower is the red of a red rose. I live in the US and found out about Anya from an herbalist friend who trained with her. I have been curious to try Anya’s perfumes!

  • Favourite description from Robert’s review – A dazzling liquid incantation that shimmers and gleams as softly as the wing of a dragonfly. Dragonflies get me every time – beautiful, tenacious, delicate, efficient – such beautiful imagery. As orange is one of my favourite colours, I would have to go with Iris/Orris flowers/roots. I am so new to botanic perfumery, I haven’t yet had a chance to try any of Anya’s fragrances – I hope to remedy that soon.

  • You had me at “magical” (I grew up 2h away from Dracula’s castle, in a small settlement alongside gypsy kids), but what I love about this review is that it focuses on method and ingredients, instead of telling us what to smell when (you know, the traditional top-middle-base notes scheme). So yes, please, sign me up.
I love looking at multi-colored flowers: pansies, orchids, spotted carnations, ombre’d irises…and smelling Anya’s White Smoke.

  • Barbara Walker says:

Congratulations on the debut of your new perfume. You had me at ambergris! White Champaca is a rare gem! Looking forward to wearing Strange Magic!

  • Abdel Elyakini says:

I have just finished my tincture study assignment and I am eager to know what kind of hidden treasures my teacher is able to reveal inside her organic tinctures.

  • Elaine Richard says:

It sounds so yummy…white champaka, with creamy ylang, indolic jasmine and gardenia. My favorite flowers together! I love the white flowers, but my favorite flower overall is orchid. All Anya’s perfumes I’ve tried are beautiful beyond compare, but my favorite so far is Royal Lotus.
In addition the color changes…I must experience this! Let me be the winner, Cafleubon.

  • presterjohn64 says:

The review was well-written and my favorite part was “hallucinogenic surfeit”. Fav color Flowers are bright coral pink. I haven’t tried Anya’s line yet but hope to get some samples and maybe take her course. USA

  • Wow this sounds so good! I love red and purple flowers. The review is somewhat different and original, the way Robert described it I could see in my mind all the lush colors and images.i am in the US but I never had the chance to try Anya’s perfumes.

  • sounds exquisite, like a heady walk through a summer’s twilight garden. My own new additions to the garden are three shades of red plumeria, and a multicolored one. Would love to have the sample prize.

  • This fragrance sounds magical both because of the changing colors from flowers to tinctures, and because of the poetic, lyrical description of the fragrance in this lovely review. I am most intrigued by the white flowers producing the red tincture. I have not had the opportunity to try any of Anya’s fragrances as yet, but would love to.

  • Thank you so much, Robert and Michelyn, for showcasing my Strange Magic in such a thoughtful and artful way. Robert, when you wrote me that you swooned at the first sniff, I clapped my hands and had a good laugh. Yes, narcotic and so forceful, that’s the story of tropical flowers.

I see my dedicated student Abdel has commented. Yes, he just finished his tincture assignment, and it was a massive and incredible paper. Abdel, I will send you some Strange Magic this week, so you can be inspired to continue tincture-making.

Thanks to all who have commented, and I look forward to sending Strange Magic to the one who wins the random drawing.

    xo

Loved reading the review! Poetic as well as informative. The words wove their magic and drew me right in! (And thank you for the art.)
Favorite color flower? I’ll have to lean in towards the blues and violets. I adore my little eranthemums, but when the passionflowers and wisteria bloom they just take over the yard visually.
I’ve only gotten to try Moondance from Anya’s Garden, but I nearly sniffed the skin off a friend who was wearing Pan!!! I’ll choose it as my favorite. Strange Magic sounds divine. Being from Florida I know the spell that tropical flowers can cast! Wondrous!

  • cmmessinger says:

My favorite part of the review “shimmers and gleams as softly as the wing of a dragonfly” To me, dragonfly’s are magical, so loved the reference to the perfumes name as well as “mind altering”…..hmmmmmmmm 🙂

I live in Tucson and am attracted to the oranges, corals and yellows.

I’ve never had the pleasure of sampling Anya’s perfumes, but hope to soon !!

  • Frangelica says:

That is one of the most enticing review I have ever read for a fragrance. Definitely lured me in and left me rapt desiring to experience the same rapturous delight. I love fragrance how it can transport an ordinary day into an adventure. I love Shakespeare so after the excerpt from “A Midsummer Nights Dream” I was sold. I love peonies, orchids and lilies but I am intrigued by the effects of night blooming jasmine and I have never had the honor of experiencing Anya’s Perfumes but now I know I must. Please pick me. I want to take your classes eventually. I live in the USA California.

  • BlessedTA says:

Great reviw as always! I have never tried any of Anya’s Garden Perfume. My favourite flower colour is red – red roses.

Thanks for the chance, I’m in Canada.

  • Oh my gosh. I am so into tincturing and magick… this is right up my alley. I have never tried any of Anya’s Garden Perfume, but from this article I really want to now! My favorite color flower is purple from palest lilac to darkest violet and everything in between.

    I’m in the USA.

  • Oooh – I loved the quotation about “snow white” Champaca flowers releasing their “secrets” and infusing the tincture with fragrance and deep red color. How can I pick a favorite color for flowers?! I can’t. I’m waiting for a freshly planted English rose bush to bud out and I hope that they’ll be a contender for favorite colors… I was promised apricot-colored blooms, tinted with sunset pink or creamy yellow depending on the weather! I’m in the US, thanks for the draw.

  • Zephyr1973 says:

Robert’s reviews are always intriguing, but I felt as though I was listening to a friend who often took “special trips” describe one of his experiences had he been describing an exquisite elixir. It is dreamlike, and sensual. I expect nothing less of Robert. I’m in the USA, and I’m very excited about this new release AND this draw! Thank you!

  • What appeals to me the most is the use of colored tinctures in Strange magic. My favorite color of flowers is white. Orange Blossom is my favorite flower. I’ve never tried anything from Anya’s Garden Perfume. I’m in US. Thank you so much.

  • BethMongold says:

Interesting–I am curious as to how strong a tincture can smell. I think of tinctures as smelling primarily of alcohol. I had no idea certain flowers turned alcohol a different color, amazing!! Alchemical magic for sure. And oh white flowers, how I love them in perfume. Thanks for the gorgeous art. I live in Colorado USA?

  • Hikmat Sher Afridi says:

Thanks for an amazing review! A magic potion showing its color to spin the head. Nothing “Strange” about it actually. Just magic. Perfumed magic. The magic of flowers. My favorite flower color is red.
Thanks to Anya’s Garden and Anya McCoy for the generosity and Cafleurebon for the opportunity to participate in the draw by letting my relative address in US or Canada.

  • roxhas1cat says:

I have that “Strange Magic” song stuck in my head now! Sounds divine. Just a touch of gardenia may be what I am searching for. When I am at the perfume counter, I am always drawn towards the darker bottles. I would love to try this “utterly intoxicating” scent. Thanks for the draw. I live in the US.

  • my favorite perfume: Royal Lotus
Favorite flower color- I like the white ones. they are usually the most drought resistant, and stronger than colored flowers.
tempted by the description of the scent.
My relative lives in the US

  • This may be my favorite Anya McCoy perfume. I like heady white flowers, and the complexity of natural tinctures may do them justice. Red is one of my favorite perfume colors, suggesting hidden temptations of a carnal nature. :oved Robert’s poetic review. I live in the US.

  • Your review is so evocative! “A dazzling liquid incantation that shimmers and gleams as softly as the wing of a dragonfly…Perfume magic” I love the different ways you describe the fragrance, flowers, colors and the specific information about the notes. Your observation that ” The scent itself is quite linear and that’s an extremely good thing, you want this perfume to stay just as it is upon first application.” is very helpful and intriguing. The perfume sounds like an unusual mix of being ethereal and also staying put. I’d love to immerse myself in it!

Favorite color flower: white, rich, deep evocative
Favorite Anya perfume: I don’t know! I’m so new to natural perfumes and am just falling in love with everything I smell. Moondance would be my first one to try–after Strange Magic.
    I live in USA

    Thank You!

  • My mind is piqued by the concept of tinctures cultured from blossoms, resulting in fabulous and unexpected colors. From the dozen or so perfumes I’ve sampled from Anya, I am looking forward to experiencing her newest creation. I live in the USA.
