New Niche Fragrances Review: Jul et Mad Histoire d’Amour Collection + Coup de Foudre Draw

The real life Jul et Mad

Love at first sight turns into fragrant inspiration which is the story behind the new collection Jul et Mad Histoire d’Amour. The love story is the story of the founders of Jul et Mad; Julien Blanchard (Jul) and Madalina Stoica (Mad). The trajectory that led a Ph.D. biologist to a café in St. Germain where a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology sits and “Voila!” like a coup de foudre (lightning bolt) romance blooms. This story, this history of love, is told in three special fragrances created by perfumer Dorothee Piot. Together they are the Histoire d’Amour collection; individually each is a chapter in the life of the real-life Jul et Mad.

Apple Stiletto by Mark Schwartz

Our story begins with just one of them, Mad, in New York. Mad is starting her career in the beauty industry and she walks in her high heels down Lexington Avenue. In the story which goes along with the fragrance Stilletos on Lex; Mad a woman of beauty and mystery has a fragrance as unforgettable and alluring as the person. Mme Piot imagines the fragrance as a sophisticated fruity floral and it is one of the best new fruity florals I have tried this year. She captures fruitiness without it going too sweet and she chooses floral notes from the more astringent side of the perfumer’s palette before laying it all over a modern chypre base.

A tart pear made even more tart by the presence of lemon grabs your attention and then a syrupy plum accord arrives but the tart quality of the previous two top notes keep it from ever really getting too treacle-like. Which is good because then lily of the valley and violet add their shiny edgy floral nature. Iris, heliotrope and carnation take Stilettos on Lex towards a more floral quality and they stand on their own strutting down the middle of this perfume. Mme Piot creates a modern chypre base using musk, an excellent Indonesian patchouli and a very desiccated cedarwood, a little vanilla rounds off some of the rough edges. This chypre quality closes Stilettos on Lex with a classic vintage vibe.

Cafe de Flore Paris France by Paul Guyer

The second chapter of our story takes place on the Boulevard St. Germain in Paris. I imagine Mad in the Café de Flore as she sits there on a business trip. Before she sees Jul she smells his fragrance a sort of straight forwardness over a traditional masculinity as she looks up and Jul locks eyes with her the connection is complete on the Terasse a St. Germain.  Mme Piot’s take on this chapter is to start with a great rhubarb and grapefruit through a very restrained floral middle down to a very masculine woody musky finish.

The rhubarb and grapefruit are excellent compliments as rhubarb contains some of the citrus component of grapefruit and its presence keeps those more in the foreground leaving the more earthy vegetal aspects underneath as accentuation and depth. Mme Piot’s choice of freesia, lotus, and rose is an inspired choice as all of these appear in almost equal intensity and delicacy. They project a complex bit of strength without having to flex their fragrant muscles. The base uses a wonderful sensual musk over an arid sandalwood and the same Indonesian patchouli used in Stilettos on Lex to complete the connection of Jul et Mad.

Palazzo Labbia Venice by John Singer Sargent

In the flush of the early stages of true love our pair heads to a palazzo in Venice and this is the place where passion deepens and turns to everlasting love in Amour de Palazzo. In the first two fragrances Mme Piot described our romantic protagonists singly; in Amour de Palazzo this is how they come together and some of “their” notes from the first two fragrances remind you that this is a fragrant portrait of two. The heat of passion comes from a very spicy top, the melding of two natures takes place in the heart and the base represents the depth of that joining.

Mme Piot uses four of my favorite spice notes to create a piquant mélange that embodies heat. Clove, pepper, ginger, and nutmeg are the components which manage to convey a kinetic jolt to the early moments of Amour de Palazzo. The heart takes the violet of Stilettos on Lex and the wood of Terasse a St. Germain and join them with the Indonesian patchouli which is the common thread through all three Histoire d’Amour fragrances. Rich leather and labdanum evoke the depth beneath the passion. The base takes that depth and goes deeper still with two more animalic notes in musk and castoreum. Oud and amber bring you back to the spicy passion which still burns despite the deeper connection.

All three Jul et Mad fragrances have above average longevity and above average sillage which based on their backstories is only appropriate.

I really like all three of these perfumes but Stilettos on Lex is the one I keep wearing. It has an unexpected sophistication to it and I am amazed that it is the fruity floral I like best. Terasse a St. Germain and Amour de Palazzo are good but it looks like it is Mad’s olfactory calling card which is my coup de foudre from the Jul et Mad Histoire d’Amour collection.

  • Stilletos on Lex sounds like it would be my fave although all three sound really good. Thankfully if I am lucky and win the draw I can try all three!

  • Based on the notes, Amour de Palazo sounds like the one I’d like best but I’m swayed by your preference for Stilletos on Lex! Thanks for the draw 🙂

  • I am really happy to read a story like theirs. Terrasse a St-Germain would be my favourite also looking at the notes.

    Thanks

  • In a dark country western club on Lexington Avenue in NYC stood a man in a cowboy hat with piercing blue eyes:he asked me to dance-my “coup de foudre” moment. 17 years later the passion still exists:)

I would love Stilletos on Lex-that’s my story!

  • Stilletos on Lex sounds very appealing! My favourite coup de foudre story is my own! We’re still together after nearly 14 years!

  • If Terrasse à St-Germain is as i imagine it to be, it will surely be my favorite. Such great stories behind these fragrances!

  • Amour de Palazzo intrigues me…. an homage to Venice, the Serenissima…one of most beautiful town here in Italy!

  • I enjoyed reading the love story of the founders through the perfumes
They all sound beautiful so I would love to win the entire set!
Coup de foudre ? Guinevere and Lancelot

  • I think Amour de Palazzo would be my favorite, the spice notes sound divine!

Thank you for the reviews of a new line and the draw!

  • What a beautiful couple. I look forward to trying their scents.
My favorite coup de foudre love story is my own. He walked into my office and we locked eyes, it was like a lightening bolt hit is both. I felt like I remembered him, like I knew we were going to meet. It was at once earth shattering yet planned. We moved in together 2 months later. That was over 13 years ago and we are still in love today.

  • Amour de Palazzo sounds amazing to me! But I would love to try all three… thanks for having this draw!

  • Amour de Palazzo would be my pick, but I love the Stilletos on Lex name the best.

    Thanks for the draw!

  • Borko Boris says:

They all sound fantastic, but if I have to choose only one that would be Stilettos on Lex.

Thank you for this wonderful draw!

  • AMOUR DE PALAZZO would be my favorite, for sure! Castoreum, leather, Violet…sounds lovely!
    Thanks for the draw.

  • i like especially the story of coming together, but the stilletos on lex is the one with the great name and though I haven’t smelled any of them a tart pear and lemon is what I am guessing I wouldlike.

  • I think that my favorite would be Amour de Palazzo. It sounds great with that spicy top and patchouli.

    Thanks!

  • I loved hearing their love story and their scents sound amazing. Amour de Palazzo sounds most like something I would like, but I would enjoy winning all.

  • What a lovely couple! Amour de Palazzo would be my choice as the weather got me craving for some serious spiciness.

  • I love that these perfumes tell a story, Amour de Palazzo sounds like something I would usually wear.
In our spring though, I would like to try the fruity freshness of Stillettos on Lex.
    Thanks for the draw!

  • Amour de Palazzo sounds delightful (I missed smelling it while in NY, dangit!)…my own coupe de foudre moment was horrible. I was struck before he even turned around…and that damned passion lasted for over a decade. Way too much drama, way too much Crazy…but wow, when the lightning bolt hits there’s nothing you can do but pick yourself up off the floor and try to breathe!

    xoA
ps. Ha! you guys almost got me with the multiplication – alllmost!

  • It will probably be a tie between the Amour de Palazzo because of the spicy leather and Stilletos on Lex because of the plum note!

    Thank you for the draw!

  • Wow, what a romantic story! Stilettos on Lex, a modern chypre!
I think that would be my favorite.

  • I am a sucker for romance!! They are a lovely couple!!! My favorite of the three would be Amour de Palazzo. I’d love to try it!

  • Amour de Palazzo sounds like the one I would like to try. I love the heat of ginger but don’t often find it done to my liking in perfume. I am very curious to see how it would be followed by violet, another of my favorites. It sounds fascinating.

  • Terasse a St. Germain is probably my favourite “love” concept story, since I believe love at first smell is as powerful as love at first sight, but Stilettos on Lex sounds like the frag I’d enjoy most — though they all sound gorgeous of course! Thanks for the draw. 🙂

  • The thing about Stilletos on Lex for me is that it’s just a fantastic name for a fragrance, evoking a completely recognizable scene. I like it.

But Terrasse a Saint Germain evokes good memories for me, and I think that one would be the first one I would try.

Coup de Foudre love stories? Nah, don’t really believe in them. But Jul et Mad make a beautiful couple.

  • stilettos on lex sounds beautiful but really they all sound lovely
Ok my mom was a bridesmaid at a friends wedding and the grooms man she was paired with was taken ill
So the cousin of her friends husband was asked at the last minute and she first met him as they were standing getting ready to walk down the aisle. their eyes met and they were walking down the aisle 6 months later at their own wedding
I was born two years after!
My parents have been together for 42 years

  • The perfume Amour de Palazzo has such an enticing name and the list of notes sounds perfect for me! Saying that they all sound beautiful, so thanks for the draw!

  • Stilletos on Lex sounds amazing! I love NYC, i spent a wonderful week in NY with my future husband! 😉

  • Amour de Palazzo, because I’m a sucker for spice, especially as temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere cool. Theirs is a story — or three — that I confess I envy: How wonderful to have scents designed to reflect a relationship!;

  • Amour de Palazzo is my favorite from the descriptions- yum yum YUM! I can’t resist. Their love story, too, is the stuff that dreams are made of, and inspires others to create their own stories, though the fragrances sound too unique to replicate.

  • Tamara Fugate says:

Stilettos on Lex is my favorite of the three although Amour de Palazzo is a close second! Love!

  • Olga (Warum) says:

I love the perfumes that tell stories. The characters are so interesting, the places in which they go intriguing… there is always a place in life to bring passion, romance, and a good story!

My favorite Coup de Foudre story is Turandot. The moment he sees her moon-like face lit by the Moon and all the gorgeous music that follows 🙂 and he does not die in the end either! (oh, but poor Liu does…)

I would probably like the Stilettos on Lex best – I know I have a tendency to go with Mark’s choices often.

  • I have never heard of this niche house before, so thanks for bringing them to my attention.
Stilettos on Lex sounds like the kind of fragrance that would be most appealing to my nose, but it was a tough choice.

    Thanks for the draw!

  • I think Amour de Palazzo could be my favourite from these three, thanks for the review and the draw!

  • I would really like to have my wife try the Stilettos on Lex, it sounds like a very complex fragrance.
