NEW NATURAL SPRING SCENTS FROM A WING & A PRAYER+ A READER’S CHOICE DRAW

Natural perfumery, for me, has been something of a mixed bag. I have smelled enough perfumes that are the olfactory equivalent of an unsweetened granola bar that I often approach a natural perfume line with a bit of apprehension. The scents seem tinged somehow with a higher, almost medicinal purpose, like if I wear them I might not smell too great but I’ll be a better person for doing so. Recently I tried a line of very expensive, organic, oil-based skin care and although my skin was indeed softer I also smelled like salad dressing. That’s not where I want to go with my personal fragrances. I wear perfume to smell good.

Last year I was introduced to the scents of Jane Cate, of A Wing & A Prayer Perfumes, who was awarded the title of Rising Star in Natural Perfumery 2011 by CaFleureBon.  What I like about Jane’s fragrances is that although they are definitely natural, they are an embodiment of Nature herself. I have an almost visceral reaction to these fragrances, as though I had set foot in an altogether wilder place.

Linden is one of my favorite notes in perfume, and I often register it in my nose as honey. When I first tried Bronte’, I thought for sure it was loaded with honey, and was surprised to see that it was not listed as a note. The combination of the linden with the rose and the warmer base notes creates a fragrance that is rich, pungent, and almost edible. Those earthy, resinous base notes seem to bring out the honey nature in the linden in a pleasing, comforting and rather seductive manner. Although this perfume might sound like it is made for cooler weather, it is perfect for spring, when you want to step away from something crisp and floral but don’t want to be weighed down by a claustrophobic winter scent. The lingering aroma on the skin is soft and beautiful, and it has nice longevity for a natural perfume.

Base Notes: Benzoin, Botanical Musk, Amber, Ambreine;  Heart Notes: Linden Blossom, Turkish Rose Abs. and  Tuberose; Top Notes: Bergamot and Pink Pepper.

Basil and Violet is a light, springy, herbal perfume. I definitely get a taste of wildness in this scent and feel it would be wonderful to wear when spending a day in the garden. The citrus facets add tang to the herbs, woods and resins. I would like to smell this one on a man – I think it would make a man smell well-groomed and outdoorsy without smelling soapy.  I am finding myself, as I write this, repeatedly lifting wrist to nose, enchanted by this unusual yet addictive scent. The woodsy sillage is close to the skin, with good longevity.

Base Notes: Frankincense, Vetiver; Heart Notes Violet Leaf, Sweet Basil, Hyssop, Lemon Verbena; Top Note: Lime.

Jane has an interesting way with a rose. Notes, the third scent in the new additions to the line, is a soft blend of roses sitting on a bed of light amber. Rose is not my easiest note. Some of the all-time great rose fragrances smell like vinegar on my skin, and others are just too cloying and artificial. Notes has a femininity and softness that is plush without being suffocating, and Jane has managed to add just enough scent of wild roses and greenery that the fragrance remains fresh and true. The first time I sampled Notes, I thought it was fairly average in originality – this time I am experiencing the subtlety of the blend and enjoying it immensely. The far drydown is soft, lovely, and very sexy in that most innocent of ways. I had thought at first go that this could be my least favorite in the line, but that is definitely not the case.

Base Notes: Amber, Heart Notes: Rose Maroc, Wild Rose and Tuberose; Top is a Rose blend (Jane’s own)

I am still learning to appreciate the many facets of natural perfumery. I am excited when I find a perfumer that lifts me out of the health food store and into the garden, or meadow, or dappled forest. I think Jane Cate is living up to her Rising Star award with these diverse releases, and I look forward to smelling what she does next. Her beautifully packaged perfumes are available through A Wing & A Prayer on Etsy. My samples were graciously provided by Jane Cate.

Thanks to Jane’s generosity, we have a draw for ½ oz of the scent of your choice of Bronte, Basil and Violet, or Notes. Tell us about your favorite natural perfumes or perfumer and which of these scents you would choose! We will draw one winner on April 7,2012 via random.org.

We announce draw winners only on site and on our Facebook page, so Like Cafleurebon and use our RSS option…or your dream prize will be just spilt perfume.

  • Currently my favorite natural perfume is Honey Blossom by Mandy Aftel.. Linden blossom is both a comforting and sensual note for me =) and with that I would love to win Bronte!

  • Tami Holubar says:

Don’t really have a favorite yet, I would like to win Basil & Violets. Thanks for the draw!

  • Victoria Casey says:

Right now my favorite natural perfume is French Maid by Steambathfactory.
I would love to win Bronte.

  • I just received a sampler of Aftelier perfume, and I am in love with Secret Garden and Mandy Aftel’s work. I would love to win Basil and Violets-the herby/flowery blend sounds fantastic for this time of year!

  • Tama, dear friend, thank you, again for such a lovely review of my spring line of fragrances. Right now BRONTE’ Perfume is in our etsy shop. But soon Basil & Violet( or as I call it BV) and NOTES will follow. Thanks again for such a great introduction to three very unique fragrances.

  • I haven’t tried a lot of natural perfumes yet, but I have tried Wing and a Prayer. I’ve been impressed with the line, as well as their generous samples and excellent customer service. My favorite out of the line is San Francisco. I’d be very interested in trying Bronte’.

  • A couple of natural perfumers that I like are Liz Zorn and Dawn Spencer Hurwitz. It’s interesting that both of them also make mixed media fragrances in addition to the all-natural ones. I think having experience with synthetics may help in steering clear of the “granola aesthetic” when using only natural materials.

Of the three perfumes mentioned in the review, I think I would like to try Bronte. I love the smell of blooming linden trees!

  • Love DSH, Liz Zorn and Neil Morris. Love the fact the fragrances are non medicinal on my skin and work for me. After reading the reviews I think would love to try Bronte even though Notes sounds fab too.

  • Bronte sounds really lovely!
I am still learning about natural perfumes so I don’t have favorite yet. I have tried some DSH that I liked a lot and also Neil Morris.

  • DSH Perfumes is one of my favorites and in the natural category, Minuit is just beautiful.

Jane’s three scents above are all appealing. I suppose I would choose “Notes”.

  • I haven’t had much of a chance to test natural fragrances. April Aromatics is a house I’ve only recently touched base with. I rather liked her Chakra oil range.
If I won I would choose Bronte.

    Thankyou!

  • These sound so nice! I would especially love to try Basil and Violet. My current favorite all-natural fragrances are Love Coco and Vamp a NY, by Olivia Giacobetti; and L’Emblem Rouge, the wonderful rose fragrance by Shelley Waddington.

  • Tourbillion says:

There are a few natural perfumers that I like, and one order that never got to me. 🙁 However, right now my favorite is Joann Bassett. I think I’d like to try Basil and Violet, so I can compare it to another natural scent that I like.

  • Taffynfontana says:

I really enjoy natural perfumes because they usually don’t cause my allergies to flare up and they are so varied and artistic. I love Soivohle, DSH and of course A Wing and a Prayer. I love Muse from A wing and a Prayer and would love to try Bronte as well.

  • I’d love to try Bronte! I love the sisters and am curious to see how they are interpreted through perfume. DSH is a wonderful natural perfumer, very complex compositions.

  • marcopietro says:

At the moment I love DSH, Neil Morris and Dubrana; but I still do not know A Wing and a Prayer. I’d like to try Basil and violet.

  • I don’t have a lot of experience with natural perfumes, Mandy Aftel however is my favorite from all I have tried so far. If I won this draw I would choose Basil and violet!

  • I have never tried any perfumes from this perfumer, but Bronte sounds lovely. Earthy, resinous, yum! A favorite among the natural perfumers I am familiar with is Roxana Villa from Illuminated Perfume. I love several of hers but at the moment Greenwitch is a favorite.

  • The only natural perfumer’s work I have experienced so far are Mandy Aftel’s Shiso and Fig. Of the two Shiso is my favorite as a more quirky unsweetened scent. I like the effect I get when i sniff only natural perfumes, a hard to describe natural euphoria. What I don’t like is the effect they have on my finances…
That said, I am happy to see that a wing and a prayer offer a much more affordable option to the one who wants to experience natural perfumery. I would love to give it a try. Basil and Violet would be my fragrance of choice among the ones listed here

  • noetic owl says:

I love the Pacifica line which is all natural-favorites are Tibetan Mountain Temple, Spanish Amber and Sandalwood. Although I love basil as a note I think I would pick Bronte for I love the author and am curious about this linden composition. Thanks for the draw!

  • My favourite natural perfume is DSH’s Cuir et Champignon and I would love to try Bronte, sounds very interesting.
    Thanks for the draw!!

  • I love some of the Soivohle and DSH fragrances. No names thou, as this is a post about another perfumeur. Congrats on the raising star award!

From this draw I would pick Bronte. Love linden!!!!

    Thank you.

  • My favorite natural perfumers are (of course) Adam Gottschalk and Dawn (of DSH) Spencer! Many newer ones (like Jane, Joyce Noerr and Howard Jarvis) have impressed me a great deal also! And, of course my dear friend Amanda Feeley (Escentual Alchemy) creates magnificent scents naturally as well.

If I were to be fortunate enough to win “Basil and Violet” would definitely be my choice (and if I win, Tama, I will let you know how it does on “manskin” LOL)

Thanks for the wonderful draw…great reviews Tam! 😀

Unfortunatelly I do not know exactly what does natural parfum mean. If some of Diptyque natural, I like them.
I would like to try “Basil and Violet”.
    Thank you for the draw.

  • Wonderful review Tama!!
I certainly am intrigued by the gorgeous choices but I will stay true to my rose obsession and select NOTES.
My favorite natural perfume at this very moment in time is……Trade Winds by perfumer Alec Lawless.
cool sea, warm earth and sand.

  • I would have to say my natural perfumery faves are Mandy Aftel, Wine & a Prayer, and Soivohle. All are fabulous! I would love to try Bronte if I’m chosen! 🙂

  • Liz Zorn and Soivohle … my favorite! Meerchuam is amazing. I’d love to try any of WingPrayer!

  • Barbara S says:

Notes is what I would choose. Gardenia Flower is my favorite natural perfume. Great read. thanks for the draw.

  • I adore Mandy’s work, of course. She has a subtle understanding of natural essences that I truly admire. I’d love to try the Basil & Violet scent – though they all sound really lovely. Thanks!

  • I’m a fan of Aftelier and DSH. Thanks for this review, and the draw. I’m really drawn to all of them, but Bronte sounds perfect.

  • Oh, this is hard, but I think Bronte sounds really nice; i need to order some samples from her! My favorite natural perfumer is Ayala Sender.

  • I haven’t tried many natural fragrances so I don’t have a favorite yet. I would like to try Bronte.
    Thank you for the draw!

  • These sound very appealing, especially Bronte. I enjoy linden and always associate it with Spring. I haven’t explored many natural perfumery lines. My initial impression was that many lacked longevity; however, Aftelier has great staying power and her line is fantastic. I especially love Cacao, Tango, and her Oud Lubin solid.

  • I love Anya McCoy, Liz Zorn, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz, & Shelley Waddington. Bronte sounds amazing for Spring, thanks so much for the opportunity to “get into” A Wing & A Prayer.

  • Tama, great job.. I like Ragna at the moment am enjoying a perfume by Alec Lawless my choice is however Souk. I adore the work of all of the gifted perfumers.. If I were to win one of the beauties of Jane I would choose Bronte.

  • 3thingsuneed says:

I have not tried any natural perfumes.. But i keep trying to win giveaways for the experience..

After reading most interviews I do like Christopher Brosius as a Perfumer.. I like his honesty and I believe his passion and beliefs would be in his perfumes.

If I win I would like to try the Basil & Violet

  • I haven’t tried a lot of natural perfumes so far, but I enjoy some of the scents in April Aromatics line. In fact, I own two full bottles. They are really nice.

If I win I’d pick Basil and Violet.

    Thanks!

  • Bronte sounds delicious!
I haven’t gotten to try a lot of natural perfumes so far (mostly local) but am quite a fan of Mandy Aftlier!

  • From what I’ve read I think my favorites would be Epione from Wing and a Prayer or maybe something from Lord’s Jester. I would love the opportunity to try Bronte on my skin it sounds gorgeous. (I thought I’d already submitted a comment , but don’t see it, so if this is a repeat, please disregard it.)
    Thanks for the draw!
