Joya is best known for its candles and home fragrances, and Frederick has collaborated with fashion houses including Opening Ceremony and Rodarte, in addition to co-branding with retailer Urban Outfitters
I met with Frederick Bouchardy, the Creative Director of Joya Studio last summer and previewed two parfum extraits, marking the Company’s first entrée into the world of fine fragrances… FvsS: Parfums Composition No. 1 and Composition No. 6.
Bouchardy truly understands the difference between an aroma and fine fragrance, and I was impressed by the quality of both Composition No. 1 and No 6, ( I did try to change his mind about “numbering” the perfumes, because they were so evocative of Art; both the works of Colette and Gustav Klimt came to mind).
Rayda Vega is the ‘nose’ behind both fragrances and the Brooklyn based ceramic artist, Sarah Cihat created the flacons… hand cast porcelain bottles, with perfume wands dipped in 22 karat gold, which are truly works of art; "all are handmade—cast, cleaned and fired—"naturally, no two are exactly the same, while so many things are mass-produced and uniform, something as personal as perfume is housed in a vessel that has been crafted by people".
“Joya has always valued the element of surprise—and incorporated this admiration into its range of products,” said Bouchardy. “It's only fitting that we would offer something as unexpected and, in many ways, anachronistic as a dyad of mysterious perfume oils with ‘magic wands.’ For the packaging, we were inspired by the classics: Arpege and even Helmut Lang. For the fragrances, we were inspired by our own
personal experiences and desires”.
