"I don’t know how to write love letters, but I wanted to tell you that my whole being opened for you. Since I fell in love with you everything is transformed and is full of beauty… love is like an aroma, like a current, like rain."  –" Frida Kahlo, to Catalan Artist Jose Bartoli 1946

Natural Perfumer Alexandra Balahoutis knows exactly how to compose a love letter…with her newest fragrance of the same name.   Created to mark 15 years of Strange Invisible Perfumes   Love Letter is a multi-faceted celebration… homage to precious botanicals, the fifteen years she has spent nurturing Strange Invisible Perfumes, perhaps finding her true love and enjoying the bliss of being newlywed. Ms. Balahoutis’ new fragrance is an olfactory poem to experience, to  enjoy, and to wear; it is one of her best fragrances she has created.  Ms. Balahoutis selected fifteen botanicals that she treasures, that make her swoon; one for each year the company has been in business.  She masterfully combines these favorite ingredients into a perfume that stirs the emotions and lights up the soul.

Love Letter opens with a burst of sparkling cheerful citruses, well representing the excitement and euphoria of a new love found.  Rare and beautiful flowers are introduced at just the right times, a cool refreshing blue lotus, warmed by precious woods and glowing frankincense, choice lavender and the finest roses blended with the seducing tuberose conveying the passion shares in those pages.  It begins to settle, woods giving way to the scent of warm skin with fading flower petals still clinging to it, feeling the sting of being apart but knowing their love, true and strong, will see them back together again and the joys that reunion will bring. Longevity is excellent and sillage is subtle which is typical of most natural perfumes. It is a shared fragrance that will appeal to men and women.

Perfumer’s Notes:

Blue Lotus – wildcrafted in a coastal town in India

Hawaiian temple mandarin (aged) – grown and hydro-distilled on a biodynamic farm in Maui

Tahitian vanilla – custom ground and percolated by master distillers in Napa Valley (a commissioned process that takes four months)

Organic rose essence – certified organic rose essence skillfully obtained from the first distillation of the flower

Frankincense – before beginning the distillation, the resin is soaked for three days, then hydro-distilled for 16 hours and aged for eleven years

Lavender – grown and hydro-distilled on an organic farm in Santa Barbara County

Cedar wood – wildcrafted in Morocco

Bergamot – custom designed glass flasks are used to hydro-distill certified organic bergamot

Tuberose – flowers grown and distilled in Mysore, India

And 6 notes whose identities will stay with Alexandra, mysterious and beautiful.

Disclosure: Sample provided to me by perfumer for review.

  • I have never tried any of Ms. Balahoutis’ fragrances, but I have the utmost respect for her, especially after reading her treatise on natural perfumery here on CaFleureBon. I’m not usually a wearer of bright fragrances, but I feel certain Love Letter would change that! My favorite “love letter” is oh so modern – months of email between my now-husband and myself when we first met. Luckily for me, he doesn’t trash email like I do! Thanks for the draw. In the US.

  • I’d like to experience Love Letter because of the blue lotus note. So intrigued and curious about its usage. My favorite love letter is from Charles to Ray Eames, which also doubled as a marriage proposal! I haven’t tried any Strange Invisible perfumes yet – hope this is my first 🙂 Thanks.

  • I’m a long-time admirer of Strange Invisibles (the price point, although I’m sure it’s justified, is outside my means). This new creation sounds delicious – particularly the vanilla note. My favorite line from a love letter is from a famous correspondence between Beethoven & his “Immortal Beloved” – “Oh continue to love me — never misjudge the most faithful heart of your beloved. Ever Thine. Ever Mine. Ever Ours”. Excited for this drawing – I’m in the USA.

  • This sounds like a nice wedding scent. The series of notes would make for a perfect marriage here in Hawaii. My wife would love this. Also noticed the aged temple mandarin from Hawaii as well.

My favorite love letter is one I wrote to my wife 25 years ago in high school for Valentine’s Day. It help me marry her years later and raise 2 wonderful kids. Thanks from Hawaii

  • This combination sounds captivating. I have always admired the love letters between John and Abigail Adams. I haven’t had the opportunity to sample from strange invisible perfumes, but I’d be delighted to get started now. The company name and aesthetic consistently gets my attention.

  • I’d like to try this because it has listed frankincense and lavender. I haven’t smelled any from the Strange Invisible line, yet. Yes I have a favorite love letter I received. 🙂 USA

  • I’d like to try Love Letter because I’m a huge fan of Strange Invisible Perfumes and I’ve never smelled it. My favorite perfume of theirs so far is Prima Ballerina. My favorite love letter shall remain private. 🙂

In the US. Thanks for the draw!

  • fazalcheema says:

this is such an interesting project. She chose 15 ingredients to celebrate each year, the ingredients are the one she loves the most, and they were sourced from all over the world. I am sure Alexandra aimed to create the best perfume in her line when she undertook this project.

I don’t know which love letter may be my favorite but the letters from fiction or nonfiction that have impressed me the most are the ones Abraham Lincoln wrote to the headmaster of the school his son attended. My favorite Strange Invisible Perfume is Fire and Cream. I am in the US

  • 15 ingredients to make you swoon I am dreaming
Beautiful love story all ways around
My favorite sip is fair Verona.
I think Oscar Wilde letters to lord Douglas were amazing
Thanks so much for this opportunity

  • pursejunkie says:

I would like to try this because the ingredients look excellent.
My favorite Love Letter is the card game.
The only other SI I have tried was the very interesting Narcotic.
    I am in the US.

  • Some of the notes are very intriguing and I haven’t experienced them before like the Blue Lotus and Hawaiin Temple Mandarin.
I wrote a love letter to a long time crush years ago and put it on her porch. She was nice enough to respond, although it was a rejection. I am in the USA

  • Elizabeth T says:

Beautiful. And I love the bottle and photography. I’d love to see how the lavender plays with the rose and tuberose. All of these ingredients sound wonderful to smell on their own! I’ve heard impressive things about SIP, but haven’t had a chance to try any yet.

One of my favorite poets who wrote love letters was Elizabeth Barrett Browning.

Thanks so much for the generous draw! USA.

  • This perfume is very intriguing. The description of the notes left me spellbound and this being a natural scent is always very important the quality of the ingredients. About love letters don’t have many memories about it because I haven’t received and sent a lot of because I grew up in a generation where love letters are not as common unfortunately being the virtual world and social networks the primary means to these ends but when I was a kid I vaguely remember some.
I have not tried any Strange Invisible Perfumes yet but I would love to try Love Letter, however I think at this moment I’m unable to purchase it.

Thanks to Alexandra Balahoutis and Cafleurebon for the draw! USA

  • I love the idea of perfume as a love letter, and I must say that it is one of the most romantic things I have heard. I have not received many love letters that I can remember 🙂 nor have I tried anything from Strange Invisible Perfumes. I am in the US, thank you!

  • This scent sounds like a dream. It reminds me of a favorite poem by e e cummings:

    love is a place
    & through this place of
    love move
    (with brightness of peace)
    all places

    yes is a world
    & in this world of
    yes live
    (skilfully curled)
    all worlds

I have not yet tried a Strange Invisible Perfume, but I have admired from afar. I’m excited for a chance to win my first! Thank you!

  • I haven’t tried anything from Strange Invisible Perfumes (probably because I’m afraid of falling in love with one of them at that price point), but Love Letter does sound beautiful. I do have some love letters hidden away and cherished for over 20 years now, as nothing compares to to feelings evoked when reading them. I do remember writing one back, scented in a perfume I often wore, which played a significant role in the relationship and probably fostered my love of perfumery and finding that “perfect” scent. I am in the US.

  • BostonScentGuy says:

Beautiful story behind this! Love the parallelism of the 15 notes/15 years. I also love how this fragrance incorporates what seem like very disparate and distinct notes and, evidently, form a cohesive whole! I remember when my girlfriend was abroad when we were in college and I’d get these postcards from Madagascar from her. The contents of the letters was less important than the fact that I got one each week–a wonderful little update. I’m in love with Lady Day and Epic Gardenia (which remind me of one another) from this line. I’m in the US and thanks for the draw!

  • Oh, I would love to try this, as I am a big fan of SIP. Love Letter sounds so beautiful.

My college boyfriend and I exchanged love letters when he was in the Peace Corps in South America. I still cherish those letters. Such a simpler, hopeful time.

My favorite SIP is Fire and Cream. Sexy and warm, with a peep of floral that grows as the drydown approaches. Love this one!

I am in the U.S. Thank you for the spectacular draw!

  • MikasMinion says:

I haven’t had the chance to try any Strange Invisible but I love to see the result of projects like this, where a talented perfumer is limited to specific ingredients or a specific number of notes. My favorite love letter is one written in my now-husband’s illegible but beautiful scrawl. He felt that real love letters were important, even if we could just text or pick up the phone.
I’m in the US. Thanks for the opportunity to try something I couldn’t otherwise sniff.

  • I like the thought of flowers blooming throughout the development of this perfume; it sounds both gorgeous and voluptuous. A romantic notion, one swoony accord for each year of her fascinating journey. The love letters of Abelard and Heloise are so passionate and exciting, I was enthralled by their story when I was in college. Black Rose is the SIP perfume I have found most lovely of the few I have sampled. Thank you, Alexandra and CaFleurebon, for the incredibly generous opportunity, and to Michael for the review. I’m in the US.

  • I had the pleasure of smelling Strange Invisible Perfumes in Chicago this past fall. They are all to die for! The unique brilliance of each individual notes included in Love Letter is as captivating as a unique brilliant love letter. I would love to see how they all blend together, but also to see if I can identify them! Plus, if I wear it, will I find a love? 😉

Once I wrote a love letter to myself. I don’t remember what it said but it’s a great experience I recommend to all. That was my favorite!

  • Wow Love Letter should be really divine. This perfume has gained notoriety but is very expensive making it difficult to get, but you can get a sample of this one for an affordable price. Natural perfumes is gaining more space in my taste and Love Letter is definitely one that I will try in the future. I have not tried any Strange Invisible line yet. My momories of love letter was one I wrote when I was 10 years old when I fell in love for the first time but was so ashamed that I never had the courage to deliver the letter to her and after a while she moved to another city.

  • It must have been so fun, coming up with a list of your 15 favorite notes that work together. Now I’m very curious what the secret notes are! Love Letter sounds stunning. My favorite love letter is one that my husband wrote when we were still dating. I’ve never tried a SIP fragrance before, but now I want to. I’m in the US. Thanks for the drawing.

  • I would love to sample this – I love how the notes are broken down and we are given details as to their derivation. I have never tried anything in this line before but this sounds like a lovely entry!
One of my all-time favorite novel is “Les Liasons Dangereuses,” which is course an epistolary novel consisting entirely of letters (love and otherwise) between the characters – highly beloved and in need of a rereading by your truly!
    Cheers from New York City!

  • I have often wondered about this line, so being able to experience one of her creations would be great! My favorite love letter was actually an email I received 20 years ago, from my now spouse! The writing was so lyrical that it was love at first read!
    In the USA.

  • Wow! $425 for 1.7 oz? One of the most expensive fragrances I’ve seen in my life, Love Letter should have a wonderful smell! I’m intrigued by Blue Lotus note because I never smelled this and I’d like to try it and I’m a Frankincense lover so if it has the right amout Frankincense I’m sold! I’ve tried any Strange Invisible Perfumes but I’d love to try it. I don’t have any personal favorite love letter but when my daughter was 11 year old she received one love letter written by a young boy of 9 years, so lovely.
    USA

  • Jennifer Witt says:

I would love to try this scent because of the use of treasured botanicals. The combination sounds magical! My favorite love letter I ever got was in my Baby Book, where my now deceased mother wrote of the sheer joy and love she and my father felt my birth brought to them. I don’t have a favorite Strange Invisible Perfume. I live in the US. Thanks for the draw.

  • I’d like to try Love Letter because the notes sound intriguing, and it might bring me luck in my search for true love. My favorite literary love letter is Keats’ fragment This Living Hand, which is a lovely piece of blank verse wherein he says to his beloved, in essence, Fine, don’t sleep with me, you’ll be sorry when I’m dead. I bet she was, too. I’m in the US, and the only SIP I’ve tried so far is Musc Botanique.

  • For me, it is the use of Blue Lotus + the combination of notes that I find really compelling (I have a favorite perfume that has Pink and White Lotus, but I am not as familiar with the Blue).
My favorite love letter is one my daughter wrote to me when she was a little girl.
I have only tried a couple from this line, but my favorite was Rose With a Broken Neck.
I am in the US, and so grateful for these draws!

  • I want to try Love Letter because of the combination of the notes and I hope that it will bring me Mr. Right! I love Tahitian Vanilla and I am curious as to how it smells blended with the frankincense. I haven’t sampled this line yet and I am anxious to try it. My favorite love letter is the first one that I ever received and I recall the butterflies it gave me and what it feels like when you fall in love for the first time in your life! I live in the US and thanks for the opportunity!

  • I’d like to try this so I can guess the secret notes. I also like much of the Strange Invisible line. So much that I couldn’t pick favorite. I have favorite love letters I wrote, and received sure. USA

  • My favorite love letter wasn’t a letter at all. When my beau and I first got together, it was electric but rocky and uncertain, to say the least: He and I re-met after decades and he was struggling about whether or not to leave his wife for me (long story), and he’d promised her he’d never speak to me again. Via Facebook, he sent me one message — “Mahler 5, 4th movement.” I think my favorite SIP has to be Fire & Cream. Unusual, unforgettable, cozy. I’m a sucker for vanilla, so the Tahitian Vanilla note has me salivating. I live in the U.S.A. and would LOVE to win Love Letter. 🙂 Thanks for the draw!

  • I would love to test Love Letter mainly because of the notes and the blue lotus flower and the fact of having been chosen among the best fragrances 2015 according to the contributors and editors of Cafleurebon. It would be my first experience with Strange Invisible line. I’ve always admired people who sent love letters but I did not dare to send any or never received one as well.
    I am in the US.

  • I have no idea what blue lotus smells like but it sounds delightful! My favorite love letter/poem is written by Andrew Marvell titled “To His Coy Mistress”. I have not tried any of the Strange Invisible Perfume line yet. I am in the U.S.

  • Great review. Love Letter sounds very nice. I’ve no experience with some notes like blue lotus and Hawaiian temple mandarin. I never tried any fragrance from Strange Invisible but I’d love to try Love Letter and Leo from Perfumes of the zodiac line. I’m in the USA.

  • the notes sound amazing on this natural perfumery.my favorite love letter was the first I ever gave to a girl. My favorite Strange Invisible Perfumes cologne is Leo.
    I am James from America.

  • bunchofpants says:

Love Letter sounds like it would be singular and unique, and I like the mystery of the unnamed notes! I have not yet tried any Strange Invisible scents. I’m in USA.

  • Love Letter sounds beautiful! I love how this perfume is a “love letter” from Alexandra. The notes are beautiful!

Blue lotus sounds beautiful. I like the process of distillation for some of the notes used in Love Letter. For example, the Hawaiian temple mandarin is not only aged, but grown and hydro-distilled on a biodynamic farm in Maui! How close to the source is that? I also love Tahitian vanilla. Love the organic rose essences – again, made with care, organic, and obtained from the first distillation of the flower. I also love tuberose!

Lastly, I love the secret notes that will stay with Alexandra. It’s just like the secrets of a love letter, some things hidden from the rest of the world only for the recipient to enjoy.

My favorite love letter is the one written to Elizabeth Taylor from Richard Burton. They fell in love on the set of Cleopatra. He wrote her this letter during the early part of their first marriage:

“My blind eyes are desperately waiting for the sight of you. You don’t realize of course, E.B., how fascinatingly beautiful you have always been, and how strangely you have acquired an added and special and dangerous loveliness.”

I live in the USA. THANK YOU!

  • Love letter does indeed sound stirring and a passionate composition of the emotions that come with finding that special person. Aleandreas work is indeed moving and beautiful. I do own several Strange Invisible perfumes, at the moment my favorite is Dimanche followed closely by Sagittarius. I am a registered US reader.
