Marcus McCoy Guru Crown

Guru Deva (Sanskrit: ‘heavenly teacher’) is an all botanical perfume from Marcus McCoy of House of Orpheus, “deeply influenced by the scents of India and is conceptualized around and named after the Jovian spirit of the planet Jupiter.”

Lucifer’s Flowers My Life with The Thrill to Kill Kult (digitalized)

Stop singing. First let me tell what Guru Deva is NOT, homage to The Beatles it is not, an oud perfume it is not, and a mere hodge podge of Indian aromas it is not. Your world IS gonna change and you’re most likely to feel more stoned after you wear it than with whatever you’re currently smoking. It would be too easy to compare the house’s darker aspects to My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult (although Marcus certainly knows a thing or three about Lucifer’s Flowers), and far too simple to be accurate to assume only Goths would drift toward the underlying Arte upon which Marcus has built the line.

Guru Deva is the petrichor and offerings of India, but within you’ll also find every element perfectly poised for ritual- be that magickal or mere adornment- for in the synergy of House of Orpheus, any act is an act of devotion.Opening with saffron, and an astringent metallic, Guru Deva is instantly recognizable from any religious censor and immediately nose piquing as olfaction is pulled in every direction as the drawing of The Circle. One gets the sense there is water running, fire burning and the waves of heat lifting in optical illusion from the parched ground. Agar attar is both sweet and sandalwood, a Hindu temple or cleaner air within the sub-continent.

Olibanum provides altar and a means of reaching the Heavenly Teacher. Infused with alchemical oil of gold*, and constructed by an initiated Nath Tantric, you may not share such philosophies, but the result is something a bit more than aesthetic. House of Orpheus is an invitation to the unseen, not only in the medium of perfume, but in the medium of mediums, themselves. These aromas are pathways, invocations and offerings to the spirits within and without. In the words of Marcus, “… to create a work of Arte that represents not just an aesthetic but the esoteric secrets of creation itself.”

Guru Deva is a warming, earthy aroma which would suit anyone whether they are trying to praise the Heavenly Teacher, are drifting Across the Universe or resonate with the deep Indian terrain and it’s endlessly rising incense.

Notes: Agar Attars, Agar Wood, Olibanum, and Saffron. Exalted with the alchemical oil of Gold (made by an initiated Nath Tantric)

*About the alchemical ingredients (from House of Orpheus): “We do not work with the usual ingredients within most normal perfumes, nor do we add all of the ingredients for their scent. Alchemical metallic oils- We source our metallic oils from the master alchemist at Kymia arts. Each metallic oil is alchemically transmuted into an oil and are the exalted essence of the metal not the metal itself. You will find no traces of mercury in the oil of mercury. These oils are safe and are even ingested for medicinal and spiritual purposes”.

Sounds very sensuous and like an unusual and unique fragrance. I’d never heard of fragrances using actual alchemical elements. Very nice.

I’ve never tried any of these scents, they seem to be for the bold.

Guru Deva clearly has been inspired by Indian mysticism and it is the right choice to go for earthy aroma because India is known for oils that take inspiration for earth such as mitti ka attar. I have not tried any creation from House of Orpheus yet. thanks a lot for the draw. i am in the US

  • I didn’t really enjoy that much about the article. Maybe hearing about someone who did a totally botanical perfume. I don’t really understand the oil of the metals, and how that can be botanical. Interesting. I’ve never tried this line of scents. USA

  • House of Orpheus makes some potent magick. Guru Deva is by far one of my favorites although I don’t yet own a bottle. I was lucky enough to smell quite a few scents at an event in Seattle and this one stole my heart.

  • Lol, I love Maya’s comment. I did find it interesting that These oils are safe and are even ingested for medicinal and spiritual purposes”. I have not tried this house yet. Thank you. I’m in the US.

Smart and very interesting rewiew! The fragrance sounds really seductive.
It appeals to me more for what it isn’t rather than for what it embodies.
I live in Italy and I never try House of Orpheus perfumes.

  • It was a very interesting review. I have never tried any of House of Orpheus perfumes. I really would like to try this, because the notes sounds fabulous. I live in Europe.

I have been curious about House of Orpheus but haven’t yet tried any. I love natural perfumes for stressful times and times of meditation and the aesthetic of this line intrigues me. They seem very thoughtfully composed. I’m in the U.S. and would love to be entered.

This made me chuckle: “Your world IS gonna change and you’re most likely to feel more stoned after you wear it than with whatever you’re currently smoking.” I’ve never tried a House of Orpheus perfume. I’m in USA.

  • Valentine Girl says:

I am drawn to Guru Deva by Einsof’s description as a warming, earthy aroma with it’s conceptualization centered around the energy of Jupiter (this planet falls in Virgo in my natal chart) & the promise that it’s not a tribute to the Beatles, oud, or a hodge podge of Indian aromas! I haven’t yet tried anything from House of Orpheus, but I am very intrigued by the line and it’s links to magic, alchemy, plants, and scent. I found myself also drawn to Cunning Man..tobacco & old books..homage to Mercury (which falls in Aquarius along with my Sun), plus I have an interest in old Anglo-Saxon books of wortcrafting and leechdoms. USA resident.

  • I really enjoyed the way the pictures give this review a sense of darkness and mysticism. Also this part right here “Guru Deva is the petrichor”, petrichor meaning the earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil. It must smell amazing.

Sadly, I never had the chance to try any of House of Orpheus creations.

I am registered reader from the EU.

Thank you for this opportunity! Wish you all the best!

  • Firstly let me thank you for opening this draw to the world-a wonderful gesture! I have never had the opportunity to try House of Orpheus but I’m loving those notes that Einsof describes and the intricacy of the philosophy. I’m very attracted to Indian philosophy in its many forms and this synergy with the oils must be amazing frankly. The approach, the journey and the destination- seems to be touched on. It will be a lucky person who sails home with this and carrying very good karma! I am an International. Registered as well

  • I can’t believe how much good perfume is coming out of the Pacific North West. Any perfume that doesn’t have a swag of flowers in it is definitely worth trying in my book and if you put olibanum in, I’m there. How people find their creativity and what inspires them is always intriguing, so thank you for giving some insight to Marcus’ influences and ethos. Love the photos. I haven’t been lucky enough to try any House of Orpheus scents. I’m in Australia.

  • Arktos and Enodia are my beloved ones from the House of Orpheus and the use of metallic oils like mercury,.silver, gold make them unique.
I love Einsof’s description of Guru Deva as a warm and earthy perfume with a strong spiritual character in it
I live in Greece EU and would love to experience Marcus unique creations like Guru Deva..

  • Einsof’s line: “Any act is an act of devotion” perfectly encompasses all that I believe House of Orpheus is about. I live in South Africa and have not yet had the pleasure of sampling any of Marcus’ perfumes

  • Great review! I can relate to the idea of scent being a spiritual pathway. I have yet to try house of Orpheus and would love the chance. I’m in the US, thanks!

  • Favorite bit: “Guru Deva is the petrichor and offerings of India…any act is an act of devotion.” Earthy scents are grounding and home to me, and saffron in all its facets is my favorite spice, so I would love to experience Guru Deva!
I have not yet tried anything from the House of Orpheus.
thank you for the review and draw
