New Fragrance Review: Bond No.9 Hudson Yards + Parking Lot to Paradise Draw

cafleurebon BONDNo9 HY 1

Just as days begin to warm and greenery reappears, New York perfumery Bond No.9 will be releasing its newest scent Hudson Yards on April 1, 2014. In keeping with its mission statement to eventually perfume all of New York City, one neighborhood at a time, this eau de parfum is inspired by and dedicated to the city’s newest neighborhood. It is so new, it has yet to exist. The Hudson Yards area is a large area in western midtown Manhattan bordering the Chelsea and Hell’s Kitchen neighborhoods. This neighborhood, scheduled to be finished in 2017, will transform the city’s skyline and create a modern oasis where before there was only concrete and parking.

Bottled in an ultra-modern iridescent chartreuse green flaçon and festooned with on a large green cloth rose on the bottle neck, Hudson Yards’ packaging is meant to reflect the multifaceted metropolitan gemstone soon to be set in urban greenery with acres of parks. The fragrance, composed by Laurent Le Guernec, represents all of these elements, offering a truly modern take on green spicy and floral.

"Snowdrops the Promise of Spring" by Angela Davies

Fresh foliage and shoots have always symbolized the renewed growth of the season and no flower says “spring is here” quite like lily-of-the-valley does. Its unique scent, sharply green yet pure and fresh, leads the opening along with silky freesia; the resulting combination makes me think of snowdrops growing in bright sunlight, dripping in icy dew. A subtle yet perky pink pepper creeps in to enliven the white flowers while keeping them from seeming powdery or too feminine. This piquant and tender warmth gives way to more sensual aromas of freshly opening peonies and Bulgarian roses. Classic floral notes layered over each other can often overpower a perfume. The addition of a watery lychee reins in the bombast of rose, accenting her freshness instead, and lightens the creamy peony with an oblique sweetness.

This verdant vision of the new neighborhood weaves steel concrete and glass into a thriving landscape of living foliage, showing we can be modern and urban while still respecting and living in harmony with Nature. Hudson Yards matches it in concept and construct. The base, combined absolutes of orange flower and iris brightened with white musk, finishes this vernal energetic perfume with sleek modern accents incorporated into a lush green and floral framework. Despite the fact this is flowery through and through, it radiates a sophisticated androgyny as it comes to rest as a skin-scent, maintaining modern edginess with sensible elegance. In the song “Big Yellow Taxi” by Joni Mitchell they paved paradise and put up a parking lot. If the finished project mirrors this perfume, in any way, paradise will soon be returning and reclaiming that asphalt and cement. Sillage: above average. Longevity: average.

Notes: wet lily-of-the-valley, sparkling freesia, pink pepper oil, peony buds, Bulgarian rose oil, lychee fruit, orange flower absolute, iris absolute and white musk.

Hudson Yard is available on the Bond website and will be on counters April 1, 2014. It is available in 50 & 100 ml EDP, body silk lotion and scented candle.

I think Coney Island would be interesting, and maybe the Bowery (but they’ve already made them both!). US resident

  • I love this Beauty!! It is one of the most beautiful Bonds ever! Thank you for the outstanding article, John!

  • I love the bottle, I love the color green and i think the next one should be called Tompkins Square Park. It sounds lovely and I would love to try this 🙂

  • I’m in the US, my favorite Bond 9 is New Haarlem and sadly I don’t know NY so can’t suggest a neighborhood to scent. Great review!

  • How about fresh meadows
It may be queens but what a great name !
Loved the review and Joni Mitchell

  • Thanks for the review, John!

I’m in the US, my favorite Bond is High Line or Success, and I don’t have a clue on a good neighborhood to scent, I don’t know NY at all … pity!

  • I live in the US, I adore Bond’s Chinatown, and I would love a scent for Hell’s Kitchen!

  • I live in the US, my favorite Bond No.9 scent is Bleecker Street and the next part of NYC you would like to see scented would be St. Mark’s Place.

  • I loved Bond No 9 High Line which I sniffed last time I was at the New York shop. Maybe a gourmond for Hell’s Kitchen? I live in the US. Thank you!

  • Two favorites – High Line for the city planner in me and Montauk for my heritage. New one? Kips Bay or Carnegie Hill. I’m in the US.

Sounds like a “scentsational” spring fragrance…and I am so ready for the emergence of greenery, after a late March snow storm. As a resident near the Chesapeake Bay, USA; the snow falling after the vernal equinox was a very rare occurence here. I really enjoyed the review and almost smelled spring around the corner after reading the post! Although I have not yet had an opportunity to actually try any Bond No. 9 perfumes, I think that my top choices to sample first are this new release, Hudson Yards, Wall Street & Washington Square…as strains of Joan Baez’s song (later covered by Judas Priest) Diamonds & Rust echo in my thoughts. For a perfumed NYC neighborhood, I would love to smell Rockaway Beach…as I first heard of the area through the Ramones song.

  • I am in the US, and this one does sound perfect for spring. I have not tried any Bond No.9 fragrances yet, but I love the packaging (especially for the samples!), and I am especially curious about trying New Haarlem and Chinatown. All of the neighborhoods I am familiar with in NYC have already been scented so I don’t have any new ones to suggest.

I am still waiting to find a Bond No.9 scent that I like. Maybe this one will be it? I don’t think Bond No. 9 has done any scents for any place in Queens, have they? How about Astoria?

  • Fazal Cheema says:

My favorite Bond Fragrance is Washington Square and the next part of NYC i would like to be bottled is Union Square. I am in the US

  • There are so many Bond No 9 perfumes that I love! I think I’d have to say that my favorite right now is I Love New York Earth Day, which also has a nice lily of the valley note, so I definitely want to try Hudson Yards. I am not familiar with New York neighborhoods, but would suggest Queens as a area to be scented. I am in the US.

  • I live in the US, my favorite Bond No.9 scent is Silver Bond and the next part of NYC you would like to see scented would be Jones Beach

  • Hmm, my very wise mother always said, “If you can’t say anything nice, ….” , well , you know the rest!
Chinatown was my “gateway” to the perfume world, and remains my favorite of the line. I can’t think of many places in NYCity that they haven’t already scented, but how about the statue of liberty? I live in the US

  • My favorite Bond no. 9 is Scent of Peace. Next part of New York City could be Times Square. 🙂 isa

  • My favorite Bond No.9 is High Line.
I have never been to New York, so I have no idea on what to suggest, although I would love an oceany scent.
    Thanks for the drawing.

  • I live in the US, and I like Coney Island best…I’ve never been to New York and they’ve already done so many places…so I’m not sure where else to suggest….Times Square?

  • FearsMice says:

I’m in the US, and my ambition is to smell Chinatown and Andy Warhol Silver Factory. Hudson Yards does sound nice; I love lily of the valley. I don’t think Bond has done the Meatpacking District — though I’d suggest calling it Gansevoort instead!

  • I’m in the U.S., and my favorite Bond is Success is a Job in NY. If I could have them scent a place in NY rather than a part of it, I would like to see them capture the scent idea of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Thanks for the draw!

  • Cynthia Richardson says:

I’ve never tried a Bond No. 9 fragrance, but how about Murray Hill? I live in the US

  • I live in the US. My favorite Bond No. 9 is either Silver Factory or New Haarlem, and I’d love to see them take on the energy of Times Square (maybe even on NYE) next!
