“How peaceful life would be without Love, Adso. How Safe. How Tranquil. And how Dull.” Il nome Della Rosa, Umberto Ecco
Allow me to paraphrase the quote above and say – how dull my life would be without the presence of the almighty rose! “Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose” and I have nothing but love and enthusiasm for any scent that has the magical note woven in its pyramid: smeared with lipstick, smoked in incense, covered in chocolate, deeply buried in patchouli, dipped in oud or scattered along wood nervures, it’s all good to me. Be them the main character or just whispering in the corners, I can never have too much – from the bright dewy pick petals of the green ones all the way to the crimson benighted gothic petals, and everything in-between – color me interested
But a hazy rose? Made by Senor Monegal himself? Be still my heart!

“At dawn, when the darkness begins to fade with the incipient light and the warmth of the sun gains intensity, the silhouette of the wild rose is blurred against the light. The dew that wets its petals evaporates in the heat of the sun’s rays and creates an aura around it that moves capriciously in the morning breeze. The curiosity inherent in my profession pushes me to approach and savor this queen just when she wakes up and her scent is unique. My instinct guides me to the moment when the queen’s heart is uncovered to enter, between dew and gloom, to steal her reason for being “The primary instinct of the wild rose is to release fragrant vapors that envelop it in a subtle haze. The instinct of the master is to pierce the aura of the rose to capture, in a chord, that instinct.”-Ramon Monegal

Wearing Ramon Monegal Hazy Rose the first time felt like tracing a sigil on my skin, each olfactive path drawing me into a maze of associations. A soft cloud, with blurred fuzzy edges envelopes you in a magical aura from beginning to end, smooth, dreamy, strangely familiar, like a dream that you have forgotten but whose presence lingers on your skin.

Like the coolness of night air still kept in the morning dew that covers the petals of a wildflower, a soft fresh buzz rises to the surface: ginger, saffron, prickly pepper, and lemony sparkles. They gather intensity, waking you up, making your skin buzz with tiny pins and needles tingling at your nostrils, just like a limb that has started moving after a long period of numbness.
The calm before the storm.
The feeling of just being on top of the iceberg is prevalent now. For it translated to me those eerily calm moments when the sea becomes a still mirror, reflecting the heavy sky above, just before the raging winds will turn the waves into tongues of angry serpents. That absolute contemplative stillness, your slowed down heartbeat echoing, muffled in your ears just before jumping into the unknown. The glitched time frames, slowed to a still, air electrified and dense. Just before that first kiss happens. Or not.

A hushed mixture of musks, with sensual deep floral facets, makes room for the star: a ruffled deep-voiced feral rose who comes in accompanied by a very naughty carmel, kept on a tight leash. Not sweet but with enough of a promise to make your mouth water, with seductive smoky frankincense and silky oud, we are treading on sheer sensual territory now. Still, things are perfectly poised, balanced by a woody structure that keeps it elegant and proper, giving an aristocratic twist to this delicious hazy debauchery.

Sniffing this part of Ramon Monegal Hazy Rose, I had a clear image of a feather dipped into the ink well bottle, raised up in the air, and writing with perfect calligraphy: seduction. Between the tender, the explicit and the suggested, the main theme is seduction – in its best, deep and most sensuous fragrant form. In the drydown things become more soothing and inwardly centered, deepening around a woody, sweet and resinous heart. Perfume precedes presence, and lingers on in absence.
