Neil Morris Fragrances A Darker Rain Review (Neil Morris) 2019 + Downpour Draw

Neil Morris Fragrances A Darker Rain review

The drenching rains have arrived early in the Pacific Northwest, a welcome relief after a relatively dry and hot summer. The change of seasons was boldly announced by uncharacteristic mid-September thunderstorms, double rainbows and cool brisk breezes.  Coincidentally (or perhaps serendipitously) on the first day of unsettled weather, Neil Morris Fragrances A Darker Rain arrived on my doorstep, mirroring the electrified atmosphere with scents of stormy seas, saturated earth and grateful thirsty, vegetation.

“… I had smelled many “Rain” perfumes but always felt some aspect was missing. They were usually aromatic sketches of light, airy rain storms. I wanted to create something moodier, deeper. A Darker Rain.”Neil Morris

Inspired by the recollection of a thunderstorm approaching over the ocean near Gloucester, Massachusetts, Neil Morris A Darker Rain opens with an image of lowering clouds, of downpours roiling across choppy seas and cold rain carried by biting winds charged with lightening.

Neil Morris Fragrances A Darker rain Review

“Midnight Beach” by Gail Gross ©

In A Darker Rain,  American perfumer Neil Morris uses the sharp edges of lime, geranium and floral ozonic notes, lifted with suggestions of aldehydes, to create an unconventional and foreboding freshness. I detect very little, if any, of the typical watery oceanic references or nods to petrichor that many of us have come to expect from “fresh” or “wet” fragrances.  Instead, Neil Morris A Darker Rain contrasts the initial aerial tension with the earthy, herbal nuances of heather and the depth and darkness of agar to portray a formidable tempest; the barometric pressure plummeting, sea foam flying, horizontal driving rain and menacing clouds, blue-black against the horizon.  Neil Morris Fragrances A Darker Rain recalls blustery winters, safe in my seaside cottage on the cliffs of the central Oregon coast, watching the crashing waves, in awe of the beauty and power of late season Pacific storms.

After several hours the initial wild gusts and pounding waves subside. Neil Morris A Darker Rain retreats into olfactory images of coastal cedars, bent and broken by the wind, of rocky beaches strewn with seaweed and driftwood, bathed in rays of sunlit patchouli, vetiver and oakmoss. Lingering notes of floral ozone, aldehydes and heather remain for twenty-four hours and more, supported by agar and musk, souvenirs of the storm, alive with energy and freshening new life.

Notes: Lime, heather, geranium, salt, floral ozone, agar, oakmoss, vetiver, animalic notes, patchouli and Atlas cedar.

Disclaimer:  I would like to take this opportunity to thank Neil Morris for my treasured bottle of A Darker Rain and to wish him a happy, however belated, birthday.  My opinions are my own.

  • Longevity, longevity, longevity. The time that this fragrance can last for is a spot on representation of effects of darker, heavier rains, which leaves its affects well beyond its downpouring. I’m also curious to smell how the lime interacts with the floral aspect of this fragrance. I have never smelled any of Mr. Morris’s fragrances before. Commenting from FL, USA.

  • This seems perfect for Fall/ Winter. I live in a coastal community and I really find Gail’s imagery of a storm lashing the sea spot on. I really love fragrances with an ozone character. I’ve not tried any Neil Morris fragrances but would love to. I’m in the US

  • Everything in the review sounds incredible but after I saw 24 hours I thought you have to be kidding me.. I need to see what this is about !! Northeast Pennsylvania.. I have never smelled any Neil Morris fragrance before but I’m pretty sure that is going to change !!

  • I love the pictures in this review, especially Holmer’s. It helps draw away from the idea of a traditional oceanic/aquatic (even the more contemporary ones like Zoologist’s Squid) and paints a vivid picture.

I’m very curious about the interplay of salt, floral ozones and agar. I don’t think I’ve smelt a fragrance with agar before.

I’ve also never smelt a Neil Morris fragrance before, hence I don’t have a favorite.

    Love from Madison, WI, USA

  • I’d love to see for myself how Neil Morris has managed to recreate the nature of a tempest in a perfume. Haven’t tried any of his scents yet, A Darker Rain might be a perfect star.

  • I am intrigued by the animalic notes and patchouli. My favourite Neil Morris fragrance is Fetish. From UK

  • Ozonic fragrances are a little out of my comfort zone, but I am curious about the longevity of this one. I love the inspiration of a stormy night by the sea in Massachusetts and, having lived in Boston for several years, I find it even more appealing. I haven’t tried any of the fragrances from this line. I live in the USA.

  • Gail, I am so happy you are enjoying your bottle of A Darker Rain! And I can’t express how grateful I am that you took the time to write such a descriptive review! As I’ve said before, you manage to conjure words that bring the emotion of a perfume home to the reader! I thank you so much!
And thank you, Dear Michelyn, for your ever present love and support. Endless thanks! Love, Neil

  • Thunderstorms at the beach are magical and otherworldly. The pictures Gail chose to illustrate the progression of the fragrance on the skin really give a sense of the olfactory journey. I sniffed a sample of Neil Morris Gotham not too long ago and would like to try more of his scents. I live in the USA

I am intrigued as to how this smells! I haven’t encountered anything like this. Perfect for the rainy season in our country. I’m from the Philippines.

  • Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this fragrance. I haven’t tried anything from Neil Morris, as of yet. I enjoyed the description of the scent of peaceful chaos after a storm. Thanks for the opportunity to sniff! USA

  • What an emotive and descriptive review. Simply marvelous. Loved the photographs. I can almost feel the rain. As huge Neil Morris fan, I have a number of his fragrances( he is full bottle worthy), so I couldn’t tell you a favorite. I must try this one. Please send along my wishes for a belated happy birthday if you can. Thanks for a great review and a generous draw. I’m in the USA

The lime in the fragrance as an intriguing note in this fragrance. My favorite fragrance Allure Homme Sport Extreme. USA

  • I live in the mountains of Northern California now, but I spent many years on the Humboldt county coast. A good storm was always so exciting! It would be exciting to win this and it would be my first scent from Neil Morris.

  • Thunderstorms are magical…but those at the beach are more than magical and I cannot imagine a perfume smells like this…I am very curious about it…and the fact that it last for 24 hours is more than magical.
I have never smelled any Neil Morris fragrance before, so thanks for the opportunity.
    I leave in RO, EU.
PS: the pictures are also great!

  • Great name for a perfume! Though I can’t seem to fit those animalic notes into the picture, and you didn’t mention them in your review. I’m curious to explore this and how NM integrated these. Especially as I already own two very different rain fragrances: Behind the Rain by Paul Schütze and Pluie Noire by Parfumerie Particulière.
I would love to win this to Germany, thanks for the draw!

  • I’ve never tried any of Neil Morris’ fragrances, unfortunately.I live in Waldorf, MD, USA, and what I liked about Gail’s review, is the fact that she was able to paint a vivid picture of what the fragrance should smell like, as there is a distinct smell after a storm, what with the electrified air, etc.

  • Thank you Gail for another detailed description of a fragrance and to Mr. Moss for the giveaway. I’m amazed at the reported longevity of this fragrance and would love to sample it to see how floral ozones play with Oakmoss and the wood notes. I’m in USA

  • The choice of images appealed me the most in this review, as well as the fantastic descriptiveness!

I don’t know any Neil Morris fragrances yet.

  • If it’s about moody attitude, than that’s me 🙂 What could be more perfect than a deep scent for this leaves-falling-and-being-crushed-by-storytelling-footprints? I used to hate autumn for what it does to summer, taking away it’s long days, those warm memories of laughs and total relaxation at the seaside. But guess what? I came to reconsider it as a passing channel between two moments, a so needed pause. I would wear during my sleep this perfume, to make me dream better. And believe me, I am not taking any perfume to bed.

  • This beautiful article reminds me of rain in the form of a universal flood in “One Hundred Years of Solitude” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. For me the rain expresses the most beautiful emotions of the human soul: romanticism, nostalgia, fear. the rain has the ability to make the man melancholy but also to give hope for tomorrow. Congratulations for the review and the wonderful photos. I don’t know this fragrance house

  • Foreboding freshness, very curious to experience a darker rain because of the different tones within this fragrance, the lime, the oakmoss and the ozone. Never tried one of the fragrances before. Living in the EU

  • I am really intrigued by the notes of vetiver, oak moss, and atlas cedar. I have not tried anytging from Neil Morris. Fron Uk

  • As soon as oakmoss and vetiver were mentioned, my attention was piqued. I’m in love with these two elements and the idea of using them in a rich, ‘rainy’ fragrance appeals. I’ve never tried Neil Morris fragrance so this will be a first. I’m in Queensland, Australia where we could definitely use some of that Pacific rain right now!

  • Drawn to the unique sounding description and whatever lingering notes remain after twenty-four hours or more. I have no favorite from the house at this time. US

  • I have always loved anything I’ve tried from Neil Morris. After reading this mysterious and compelling review, I’m dying to try his newest creation! It sounds wonderful!
Commenting from the US. Thank you for the draw!

Rain fragrances are some of my very favorites, and Darker Rain sounds like the pinnacle of broody weather fragrance! I am new to Neil Morris’s fragrances and I’m excited to discover his offerings because it sounds like he truly captures the essence and energy of coastal rain, which is no small thing. Live in the US, thank you for the draw!

  • How beautiful. I love rain-inspired perfumes such as A Jardin apres la Mousson and I would love to experience a new take on rain. By the sound of Gail’s review, this perfume will be a wonderful dark, a bit gloomy, poetic interpretation of rain. I too would like to wish Neil Morris a happy birthday. This would be my first experience from his creations. I am from Europe. Thanks for a lovely review on an interesting perfume!

  • redwheelbarrow says:

I love everything about this from the imagery to the notes listed. It’s interesting how this fragrance nods to the earthiness of a storm. I have not tried this house but now I am curious. Thank you for the review and draw. I’m in the US.

  • You got me with animalic notes in combination with aquatic. This sounds intriguing. I only samples Fetiche, which i liked a lot. The pictures are beautiful toob

  • Pep Dalessandri says:

I have never tried Neil Morris fragrances, but have read some really positive things from respected people about them. What intrigues me about this article is how it describes the ‘formidable tempest’ this scents evokes. I love those stormy summer days in Australia.
    Thank you for the article.

  • I like the idea of a dark rainy fragrance. I also like aldehydes and herbal notes such as vetiver and oakmoss blended together and would like to experience the mix. Please count me in for the draw, from Europe.

  • Lovely description from Gail, must be a great fragrance. Sadly i’ve never had the chance to try anything from Neil Morris line yet. Thanks for the chance, i’m in the EU.

  • Excellent review by Gail. I like the poetic description of the scent as not a typical Rain fragrance but having a lot more depth and is unconventional. I am very intrigued and interested. I have yet to experienced a fragrance from Neil Morris. Thanks for the draw. I live in USA.

  • Would like to try this out. Sounds really nice and that it’s long lasting. I can picture myself on a pirate ship cruising the seas. Thanks, Ca

  • Great review, Gail! This was the first I’ve heard of Neil Morris (Happy Belated Birthday), but I’ll be digging deeper into his catalogue of fragrances. What appeals to me most about A Darker Rain is the notes and how they would work together to create such an intoxicating smell. I’m located in the U.S.

  • Atlas cedar is one of my favorite note. I’ve never encountered this house before. Fingers crossed. Thank you for the wonderful review and giveaway. California, USA

  • Hello mij name is Ria and I Am living in the Netherlands Amsterdam. I would like to try Neil s Perfume because I Am very curieus about the longevity and the smell of Dark Rain….smile. Lost of Greetings from Holland.

  • Including the quote, “I wanted to create something moodier, deeper. A Darker Rain” and melding the description of the fragrance to a description of the weather made this review especially interesting to read.

Unfortunately I do not yet have a favorite Neil Morris fragrance.

    USA

  • I always love reading reviews of Neil Morris fragrances on this site. His work alway inspires poetic and impressionistic responses. Even Neil’s website inspires. Gail really took me to the beaches of the Pacific Northwest. I was lucky enough to live in Seattle and travel along the Oregon coast. A Darker Rain surely will transport the wearer to this region.
My favourite Neil Morris fragrance is Gardenia for Men.
    I live in the USA.

  • I have wanted a Neil Morris for a time! I like the use of aldehydes. I think that is what many rain fragrances miss, too. They are too ethereal and sweet without the bite and fizz of electricity. I need some ozone! Burnt Amber, Cathedral, Fetish. I want them all. I’m in USA.

  • First off, I’d never heard of Neil Morris fragrances before. This sounds like a really interesting perfume. Fresh, yet earthy and woody. I love anything that has patchouli in the base.
    I live in the USA.

  • Darker Rain sounds like a fun and interesting fragrance. Stormy weather and sea sounds alot like Oregon. ” I detect very little, if any, of the typical watery oceanic references or nods to petrichor that many of us have come to expect from “fresh” or “wet” fragrances.” I have not tried any of Neil Morris’s fragrances. USA

  • I’ve never tried Neil Morris Fragrances perfumes, do I haven’t my favourite yet. I very often have a problem with aquatic/sea scents. There are only a few, I really like. This looks like a candidate to this list, typical marine notes connected with heavy wood notes can be very interesting. I’d love to try. I live in Poland.

  • Although it obviously doesn’t sound like it smells similar to it, the description reminds me of the feeling evoked by fragrances like Horizon from Guy Laroche. Its not aquatic in that it smells fresh or watery, but it smells dark, like a storm or the deep sea. I love scents like that.
Im in IL in the US, and I havent tried any from this house to have a favorite. Thanks for the draw

  • I am amazed by the name of this scent. As well as – of course – the fact of 24 hours lasting time. Ozonic fragrances can be hard to manage but probably here it is something that could really attract me.
I don’t know any of Neil Morris’ scents.
    I live in Poland.

  • I love a menacing rainstorm and this review truly sets this fragrance apart from “teenage” (no animosity) fragrance rain experiences. I have not tried Neil Morris yet, but a visit to his site was eye-opening. I live in the USA.

  • Thank you everyone for your comments and for entering the draw. Please check back at CaFleureBon for the winner of the bottle of A Darker Rain. And of course many thanks Neil Morris for his generosity. Once again, Happy Belated Birthday Neil!

  • Rain was always one of my most favorite smells since childhood – therefor I am genuinely interested in how educated noses approach this theme!

I don’t know yet any Neil Morris fragrances!
